Help needed with latex mask making!!!!!

Up to now all the prop making i've been involved in has been straightforward stuff- making blasters out of wood, armour out of card board and modifications to masks and helmets that i've bought but now i'd like to have a crack at making a latex mask. I've seen some great clay sculpts on here that have ended up being brilliant latex masks (the Plo-Kloon and Cad Bane ones for instance) but i've no idea how to go from the clay sculpt to the finished product. I've looked everywhere for information and all I can seem to find is info on half-face masks, not the full over head jobs. Can anybody give me a bit of help and advice on how I would go about making one or if theres massive costs involved if theres any real point for a one off. Really looking forward to everybodies oppinions and advice on this.

Thanks

Jon

Hey Jon,

I think I can help you along with what you are trying to do. First off are you trying to do a full head rubber pullover mask? Check Youtube for tutorials ...That type of mask is called a slush rubber mask. Let me know if this helps...if you need any more help contact me anytime ...I am a Makeup/Prosthetic technician in the Motion Picture industry and can point you in the right direction.

Best,
Jordan

If I were you I would use silicone, it's more $ but it's worth every penny of it. Do a lot of research, I just found out a new way (too me) on how to mold a sculpture (for masks). I will start a thread as soon as I finish the sculpt.

Rangefinder, it would be great if you could give me some tips aswell...:). Last time I molded a mask the mold was poorly designed and it didn't come out good.

Thanks both of you, really appreciate the tips. Yeah, I want to do an over te head rubber mask but my first problem was not knowing what the technique was called which was making it difficult to find the right info . I'll have a nosey about and see what I can find out.
I'll be sure to keep an eye out for that thread when you post it, i'm sure it will come in use

Thanks again guys

Rangefinder, add another into the mix... I've done a partial latex mask using a foam head as my base but have no way of really knowing what else I can do to actually build out a superior mask that I can reproduce when needed. At this time I have a two piece latex mask that I use when costuming my latest sith outfit... I want to build a mold melding both masks into one useable full head mask... I can post up pics pf the setup I have right now if necessary..
