First Ever Helmet - Sabine Wren - Need Help

Nixa

New Hunter
Good Afternoon All.

I recently bought a Sabine Wren Helmet for my build. I have the soft parts done, and want to start on the armor as my pulled helmet just arrived. The thing is that I've never ever done this before and don't really know where to start. The 2 things I know I need to do first is cut the rest of the visor area off (was left for shipping stability) and fill in little niches that were cut in the side of the visor area (possibly that they did to start the visor cut). I figure I can fill int he niches with resin/fiberglass.

I was told to wash the helmet to get the extra resin off of it and then to start painting. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Sanding or base coating?
Any help or pointing in a general direction would help immensely. Thank you all.

when your surface is perfetly smooth u have to use a primer spray for plastic before starting painting. after you paint and after the paint u have to use a final spray to cover your paintjob

A lot of the prep work depends on the quality of the cast. Some casts need a lot of prep and cleaning, some need almost none. Most all will require some.

To cut out the visor I use my dremel and carefully cut it out. Then I use files to smooth and finish the edges. When you clean the helmet look it over and see if there are any pits or air bubbles in the cast. If so then use some glazing putty or bondo to smooth it out and make sure it is smooth. Once you get to the point it is smooth and clean you can add a layer of primer. When you put the primer on use thin layers and make sure it doesn't run. Sand it smooth again and inspect it. If it all looks smooth and clean then you are ready for some paint.

If you don't have a dremel you should probably consider getting one. But you can also cut out the visor with a coping saw.

Hope that helps

i would suggest perusing the boba fett helmet and jango sections and read up on the WIP threads, even the scratch-builds. they'll have plenty of info on how to get your helmet prepped for paint. sanding, filling, sanding more, possible rebuilding sections, more sanding, priming, and on and on.

here's a thread i posted about a jango WIP with probably the most progress pictures and best explanation of my process: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f28/longhornfett-jango-helmet-update-finished-helmet-7-5-10-a-37635/

i had an idea, you should post some pics of your helmet so we can see and give you some feedback so you have an idea where to start.
