    Jan 29, 2007, 1:31 PM - A few questions to start from scratch. #1

Hello! I am now to this forum and have a few questions. I have been wanting to create a Boba costume for quite a while now, and have trolled ebay, but never bought anything. I came across these forums and saw a post about making a latex mold of a bucket and it intrigued me to want to to the same because it appeared it would be a lot of fun. I actually have two questions. Who is a reputible person that I can get a bucket to make molds? Also, how hard, in all actuality, is it to airbrush? I never have but it too has always looked enjoyable and I am going to have to learn. Thanks!

Why would you need to make molds once you buy the helmet? Making molds of another person's work with the intention of making copies (recasting) is frowned upon on this forum.

    From the Code of Conduct:

"Copying or duplicating, any item, with or without modification, without consent from the license holder, original creator, original artist, trademark holder, or copyright holder IS recasting. Deliberately recasting another member’s creation without consent is not supported by this community."

Ok, well, off to a bad start. I do apologize.
Basicly, when I was looking through the boards before I signed up, there was a post by Ronin677 about him making a silicone mold. I really wanted to know where you even get something like that (unfinished) to start off. I don't really know anything about any of these subjects on these boards. Since I am new to all of this, and would be attempting to paint my first helmet, I just wanted to be able to have a back-up in case I screwed something up beyond repair because I know I am going to learn from trial and error. I just don't have tons of money and don't want to buy a new one each time I mess up.
How do I go about making a scratch built helmet?

First of all, I also want to apologize; I didn't mean to scare you away! It's always good to ask questions.

The forum Search feature (located at the top of the screen) is often an over-looked tool. I found quite a few threads on scratch-building helmets. You also may want to look up posts by member 'wizardofflight', as his templates have been used by several members with great success.

    Welcome to TDH!

Well, after attempting to scour the boards, I have some questions.

    1. What kind of material is best to to construct the skeleton? For sale signs at walmart? Somethigng thicker to better hold it's shape?

    2. Is bondo the main and best medium to sculpt your bucket after the skeleton has been assembled?

    3. Is airbrushing as easier than it looks? What brands of paint work best?

    4. After building your bucket, is there something your are supposed to coat it with before making a silicone mold?

I do appreciate in advance anyone who takes the time!

You don't neccesarily need an airbrush to paint. Rattlecans can work.

Look for threads by SD68, Honus and Aaron on scratch-built helmets.
SD68 used a batting helmet & for sale signs. Honus and Aaron used chipboard or cardboard with surprising results. Personally, I'm starting with chipboard and cardboard, then moving onto Sintra & for sale signs once I've cut my teeth on the more forgiving (and cheaper) cardboard.

As far as painting, nothing beats experience and trial and error. Yet another reason to use cardboard on the first one. One thread referred to using baking soda + super glue to fill in cracks instead of bondo. I haven't tried it yet, but super glue is supposed to really do the job on the For Sale signs and Sintra. Sintra is usually available at sign shops. I got two long pieces of scrap just by asking.

Good luck and plz post pix.
