Can I ask semi-helmet related modelling questions?

Greetings

I'm currently working on a Marvin the Martian helmet and a 3ft Marvin model at the same scale (forget Jango - this is for the real hard men8)).

The thing is, both models are big. The full model is especially so, and in addition has some pretty weak areas at the ankles and the neck.

Now I'm thinking that the final model will have to be a hollow shell of some sort with some internal reinforcement as a supporting skeleton.

Something like styrene for the outside would probably work, but the only way I could think of doing it is vacuforming, and that would require about 20 different solid parts.

Anyone got any suggestions? Tips? Do's and don'ts? Breakfast recipes? Racing tips...

Are you making this for display purposes?

Depending on the reason you are making this I'd go with a Silicone Mold with a Fiberglass Jacket (To hold the shape of the Silicone Mold) and out of the Mold do Fiberglass Castings.

Hi PropSculptor. Thanks for the info. Sound slike it may be the way to go. Could I use just gypsum instead of latex for the mold? At 3ft the details is not exactly high.

As for the use, the model is for display (in my living room

). It's based on the picture shown below (except he's holding his disintegrator pistol).

As such, what would be the best way to deal with the numerous undercuts, and can you see any serious problem areas?

For what you are talking about to make a Gypsium Mold would be More complicated that it needs to be. You would have to make a mold with numerous mold walls which would create a lot of Flashing that would have to be trimmed off, sanded and patched.

The simplest way of doing it would be with a two-piece mold, Silicone Mold with a Fiberglass Jacket.

You can do a Rigid fiberglass mold with numerous mold walls (To avoid the undercuts and avoid having your original being locked in the mold forever!) but as I mentioned with the Gypsium Mold it would be More complicated.

Just a note, I wouldn't suggest using Latex to make a flexible mold with because it shrinks too much.
