GMH - "THE" definitive Boba Fett Helmet - Original Sales Thread

    Hi everyone,

Before I get going, if you haven’t read the two articles which I have linked to below, you aren’t going to understand a lot of what I am talking about, so go and read them first, and then come back and read the rest of this post.

Boba Fett Costume Resource - First Sons – Boba Fett Preproduction #2 Helmet Progeny

Boba Fett Costume Resource - The Grant McCune Boba Fett Helmet

Alright, you have read the articles, so you know this post is about the restoration of the Grant McCune Boba Fett helmet.

As most of you have noticed, I've been scarce the past few weeks. Typical business with the membership has been hindered a bit, and orders have met some delay. I do apologize for the snail's pace, but at least now it is clear why this has been. I wish to apologize for not being able to discuss it until now and thank you all for your great patience

I also want to say how thrilled I am to be involved the restoration of the Grant McCune helmet. It was my pleasure to work with Art in restoring this piece of history. Thank you Art, for the opportunity

As the restoration project neared completion, it occurred to me that we had in hand, a very fine mold that would set on a shelf somewhere and do no one, a bit of good so I approached Art about possibly putting it to good use. It really didn't take a lot of twisting his arms, and legs … before he agreed to allow me to share his new artifact with the community Of course, I'm kidding about twisting his arms and legs. Art is a most gracious guy and because of it we all now have an opportunity to possess a little piece of rare movie history. This is a truly great day for the Fett community.

    .

Keep in mind, this is a preliminary picture. Art will be taking more professional photos in a couple of days when he receives his casting. Until then, there is plenty to bone up on. So let’s get into specifics.

    THE PROCESS :
Make no mistake, this was a full on restoration. If you've already done your homework, you will remember that this helmet had its issues when Art received it. Obviously, his original couldn't be used, as it was too brittle to risk. After having made a mold of his casting, I pulled a copy to use as a new master. Taking great care of course, to choose the best materials to minimize the possibility of shrinkage in the casting process …

After realizing that most of the minor paint details would have to be lost, we decided to focus on putting this helmet back together in as close to it's original "Lucasfilm" condition as possible. What this means is, instead of covering up a few "boo-boo's", we wanted to restore the helmet back to the condition it was prior to primer and paint by Lucasfilm. This meant erasing erroneous molding anomalies that can be found on most helmets that share the GMH's lineage, even many times removed such as a "Mystery Helmet", “Lava Helmet”, or even a "DP Deluxe" derivative . All suffer from lumpy domes, caved in domes, warped head bands and a plethora of other issues. Art and I agreed to focus on using the PreProduction #2 helmet as our goal instead of making a sterilized generic Fett helmet. If the PP2 specific scratches bother you, you can fill them right?

The biggest concern in regard to restoring some of the warped areas was globbing body filer all over the helmet to fix the issues, only to result in a complete loss of pedigree. I instead decided to take a more risky and delicate approach. I pulled a very light gelcoat casting, with fiberglass resin slushed in to reinforce the brittle gelcoat, but NO glass fiber whatsoever. This left an eggshell of sorts. If it were dropped, it would shatter like glass. My approach was to have a thin enough shell to experiment with a heat gun. If anyone has used a heat gun on fiberglass in the past, you will know it's virtually impossible to make significant changes when there is glass fiber in the way. The fiber doesn't "give".

My gamble paid off and I found success in straightening out a few minor details. That left the big stuff; the dome and sides of the helmet. This time simply heating wasn't quite enough. But heating and burning little fingertips did By heating, and massaging this material, you can actually make the area quite pliable to do with what is necessary. And sure enough, it worked.

What does this mean for us? This means that the GMH is going to be as true to original PreProduction #2 helmet as is possible because I was able to heat massage the whole helmet back to its former state. I'll undoubtedly be asked, how much was heat massaged, how much was body filler. I can honestly say that there is not one single drop of body-filler used on this new master, with the exception of a rush touch op on the visor areas that obviously gets cut out For those concerned that I may have overcorrected the affected areas, it should be noted that during this process, the gel layers can only go as far as they will naturally allow. Elasticity doesn't really exist in this material, even with heat. The material can only be heated and made somewhat malleable and if you try to stretch it, the gelcoat will crack. The trick is to take it right to the limit because you’re actually forcing to material to go back where it used to be. When you start to see a crack, you know you've reached your goal in any given area. In those cases where a crack presented itself, it was repaired with a gel coat mixture for adhesion to the master, but mixed with 75 parts cabosil for ease in sanding without ruining the surface of the master in surrounding areas. The process used here allowed us to restore more than 90 % of this helmet to its original state without having to add body-filler, or alter the original essence of this piece of movie history.

There was one area that did need to be altered, the back of the helmet right at the original damaged mold seam line. This could not be avoided. The great news is, after one cut up the original seam line and applying heat, the rear of the helmet fell right back into place. This process was a complete success.

    INTEREST:
Art and I want to make sure that everyone who wants one can get their hands on a GMH so here is my new approach to making them available to you:

This helmet will NOT be offered as a "Premium Kit" at this time. This will be a very basic kit, like the old days; a helmet shell and resin cast ears.

    Why?

While it may only take me an hour to an hour and a half to cast up a helmet, it can take up to 6 hours to make the greeblies for a a "Premium Kit" and I don’t want this project to be a never ending waiting list. I want this run to move swiftly, and smoothly and at a later date I will offer a more comprehensive accessory kit that can be purchased separately. Parts such as the RF and chin cup can be sourced elsewhere if necessary or the time being. The point here is, making sure everyone has an opportunity to share in this awesome offering.

There is another reason for going this route this time around… Cost. Pure and simple.

By offering fewer of the time consuming “premium” accessories, less of my time and cost is involved, therefore less cost is passed on to you. One might think that you would rather pay more for a comprehensive kit. But wait? You haven't been told the price yet?

    COST:
Because of the lineage and rarity of this helmet you might be thinking that copies are going to cost an arm and a leg, right? If you are thinking this, you would be wrong Art and I, both, WANT to share this with everyone and want to make sure it is affordable to virtually every Fett fan! It's that simple. This is the biggest piece of Fett that has ever been made available to the public. So rejoice at the pricing…

    (1) GMH (with resin ear caps) - $235 + $17 shipping in the U.S. and $45 for overseas shipping.

This is only a few bucks more than an FP Budget helmet. You can't beat it with a stick!

*** A Special Note to existing customers ***

For those of you that may have an order already placed for a Premium or Budget helmet in the last 4 weeks, I've purposely drug my feet just a little bit. The reason being is that I want to make sure that everyone is happy. It would be horrible to pay for one thing, only to find that a couple of short weeks later something like the GMH is now available. So to those individuals who already have an order placed, I'm offering an upgrade at no additional cost.

If you have a Premium Order, I will substitute for a GMH with Premium Accessories. Again, the premium accessories will not be offered in this run. This is for this special circumstance only.

If you have a Budget on order, you are welcome to substitute for a GMH at no extra cost.

This substitution is by volunteer only, meaning you MUST contact me if you prefer a GMH! I will not be contacting you due to time constraints. Again, if you would like to substitute, YOU MUST CONTACT ME!

Now that it's clear what I've been up to, I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you are still in good hands I do apologize that it had to be so cryptic and covert.

This is the OFFICIAL INTEREST thread for the GMH. I will start the list, based on your posts, like the old days. Payments will be accepted for pre-order immediately. If you're interested, please make your post, and remit your pay-pal payment to:

    fettpride@fettpride.com

If you would like to send a Money Order, please contact me at consult@fparmor.com

    One final note :

Patience, as always, is key. This is a great project to be involved with but please understand, if you are of a sensitive nature, or impatient, or are on a tight timeline for an event, or function, I would ask that you not participate at this time. I need to make sure it is understood, that once again I am offering a service to this community. Threats and abuse don't make things happen faster… nor does incessant status checks. I do my very best to serve the community, and would ask you for the patience and respect that service deserves.

Thank you all. And again, Thank you Art, for making a great thing happen for this community

    Chris

re: Grant McCune Helmet (GMH) "THE" definitive Boba Fett Helmet - NOW AVAILABLE!

WOW, this is truely an amazing day for the Fett Community... I personally want to thank Art and Chris for taking this project and allowing us "regular folks" to have a piece of history.

As many know this helmet will propbably bring on debate and what not, as this PP#2helmet was only in the hands of a few, unfortunate really... but at the end of the day we will All have an opportunity to own a piece of Fett history that will now be shared for All that want it.. and for that I am truely greatful to you both...

Congrats Chris on being in on this... and Thanks Art for sharing... this is truely what this community, in my mind, has Always been about.

SO YOU KNOW YOU CAN COUNT ME IN!!

I think we definately need to make a paint list... I started my own research way back when in regards to paint matching.. I never finished it though...
    I think the best representation of a finished PP2 was Micke's : http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/p...project-13552/

ALL the pics are dead... but I saved most of them.

Yes! Micke's and Steve the Swede's amazing work was what got me into painting Fett helmets.

You know, a lot of people have said something along these lines... something about letting the "common" or "average" person have access to these pieces. While I appreciate the kudos, it also implies a belief that people like Chris and I are somehow different than the masses. We aren't. We are ALL TDH members and lovers of Boba Fett. We are ALL here for a common purpose and goal. My original intent for creating the Dented Helmet was to share all I could and to help other build better Boba Fetts. For me, offering this helmet is just another step in fulfilling that purpose. I WANT all of you to have this and every fan to have the very best pieces and when it is possible for me to help make that happen, I always will! I am one of you and am just as thrilled as you that this pieces is being made available! I can't wait to see these helmets painted up and on YOUR suits!

Sign me up, Chris! It's about time I move up from a Don Post vinyl helmet, huh? Of course this will be turned into an ROTJ helmet in my case.

Thanks to Art and Chris for making these available for us.

    Hi Everyone,

Came across a slightly better teaser pic I took and thought I'd share. Obviously, I've not been able to work out my photography kinks over the years. I'm sure Art will show this off for what it really is if anyone is still in doubt. But until then, here is a better representation.

The OFFICIAL LIST is being typed as we speak based on responses and payments here. So stand by for that in Post #1 ... answers to some of your questions also to follow

Thanks everyone for their kind remarks and support of this fantastic project so far !

I guess my question - -since I was looking to pick up a new bucket from Chris anyway -- is which is the more definitive for ESB now? Obviously, if you are doing PP2, this would be the absolute shiznit. But what about ESB? Is this or the MR proto going to be closer? Would you be fixing most of the damage on this to get to ESB?

I can hear my wife already!

ADAM! You have three other unfinished helmets collecting dust what do you need with a fourth sitting around!

Hun they are all about 30% done and if you ever stop nagging me ill be able to finish them. Here is the Honey Do list you keep adding stuff to, get cracking.

Might be better to hold off on this for now; but it just looks so good.

Thanks guys for all the hard work, even if it is a labor of love.

I would like to know this as well I am doing an ESB Fett now and I would be selling my FP to buy the GMH. Could you post profile pics or a side by side with the FP
I know you wouldnt be fixing any of the wear damage though.

re: GMH - "THE" definitive Boba Fett Helmet - UPDATE SEPT 27th 2011

    Guys and gals,

I've been being asked this exact same question practically everyday since the debut . It seems to be the biggest one, with the largest gray cloud surrounding it So allow me to clarify. I should have already, I apologize. I felt that I may have been getting a bit winded in my initial post

It is fact that ALL 6 primary helmets were spawned from the same ILM mold. This includes All Pre-Production helmets, as well as the ROTJ and ESB hero helmets respectively. This means, every helmet started life the same exact way. Our goal, was to restore this helmet back to what would be considered as true to this original intended concept as possible. Meaning, this helmet represents the
truest possible appearance to vanilla ILM helmet just out of the original mold, before trimming, primer and paint ever took place.

Where we find the differences between "Screen Helmet" versions is simply a variation between not only how each individual helmet was trimmed and prepped (visor allowances, bottom flash, dent installation, ect.) but also "wear and tear" during filming. The ESB helmet to be specific, was damaged during filming more than once, and was repaired more than once. The evidence of where it was
damaged and how shoddily the repairs were executed are evident in the vast majority of exhibit reference that has been available for years. Compound 30 years of exhibit touring and mishandling, and what we come to find is a very different "looking" helmet that stands out from the rest. But it doesn't change the fact that the ESB "hero" did in fact come from the same molds, and once looked exactly like this one.

Again, our goal was to reproduce the perfect "base" for "ANY" Fett helmet. As true to the original mold and master as possible. If you are doing a pre-production Fett, or and ROTJ Fett, this helmet is perfect with little to no modification (scars, ect.) If you are doing an ESB Fett, of course there needs to be some further allowances. I would imagine taking a hammer to it and smacking it around a few times, or perhaps dropping it from 6 ft once or twice would be a good start, but I wouldn't recommend it I'm kidding of course, but fact is, it wouldn't take much to reproduce the unique look and feel for an EB helmet. It's really up to the individual.

But you have to understand, that in a case such as this, without true 3 dimensional reference, my modding this helmet to "match" an ESB helmet would be 100% artistic liberty. And THAT is what we were trying to avoid at all cost. Unlike what some individuals are saying, it wasn't necessary to take any artistic liberty to even speak of with this helmet. That's the beauty of following and preserving all of the natural lines and leaving well enough alone in the restoration process. Removing surface texture and heat massaging the warped areas back into their natural places isn't modifying, and most certainly isn't based on artistic liberty

If the evidence doesn't speak for itself, I'm not exactly sure what else to tell you. What I can say is, we've waited for a "DECADE" for something like this to happen within the community. Currently, this is the most profound event in Fett Costuming history. Because it's being shared with the community, thus setting a new precedence. If you're on the "fence", there isn't anything wrong with that. Different strokes for different folks. But if you are a true collector/enthusiast, this really is the "Holy Grail". At least for the foreseeable future. You'll only be short changing yourself from a collector/enthusiast standpoint. Adding to the fact that these certainly will not be made available forever only adds to how profound it really is.

For those that still prefer an "MR" based helmet for costuming, they will still be available of course. However, it should also be noted that although the "MR Proto" was indeed the closest thing available to the masses in the recent past, it still is a "digitally grown" piece. I'm certainly not going to down the "MR" genre to promote the GMH, it would be silly to even try. Because it's a no brainer. Real Helmet vs. Digital Scan? But, the bare bones of the matter is to consider the digital process. The MR master was of course scanned from an original. But, it was digitally "upsized" a certain percentage to allow for the manufacturing process which was x3. They were taking into account "Shrinkage" that wold be inevitable during those processes. Unfortunately, it was an over allowance. The MR line is approx. 6% larger than a screen helmet. Then, there is human intervention to consider. Once the digital scan is "output", or three dimensionally printed, there has to be human hands involved to clean the the mill marks and imperfections from the new intended master. There is a LOT f room for error here. And unfortunately there was. Again, I'm not "downing" the MR line, it really "WAS" the best option available to us, at the time. Which is why I fought to make it happen for as many people as possible. But, as with life itself ... we evolve. Wether we like it or not, change is inevitable. We're crossing a new milestone here, and I really hope you will all do yourselves justice and join us

    Best,

    Chris

Hey Chris. I sent a paypal payment a couple of days ago. I forgot to put my screen name in the comments. You will probably see a payment from Brian McD---- or camssguy@---- . If you don't find it let me know and I will try to find some more information. I am sorry I didn't get it in there when I sent it.

Chris, Art, Thank you. Thank you so much for your generosity. I know its sad but I got kinda teared up when reading this. You would have been 100% in your right to keep this all to yourselves. You both have gone above and beyond for this community time and time again and it truly amazes me.

Having said that please put me down for one.

    Again, thank you both.

re: GMH - "THE" definitive Boba Fett Helmet - UPDATE SEPT 27th 2011

Chris, is there any chance that (in the fullness of time) the more comprehensive accessory kit may include the option of machined aluminum ears?
    Cheers

    Perhaps

Actually, this is being discussed. We hope to actually close a deal on this. Time will tell.

The more I look at this the more I have to have it!
I do have a question though. How large of a run are you going to do on this?
Also what type of time frame is this on (just out of curiosity)?
Me being very new to the site can see myself right at the very end of a long, long list.

Brilliant, thanks. I hope everything falls into place to make this happen as it would cap off the ultimate Fett helmet nicely. Needless to say, I'd be up for a set.

So... will threats and abuse make things happen faster? Perhaps incessant status checks? :-)

All kidding aside, I can't WAIT to get it! This really is a gracious thing to offer this up. I saw one photo and RAN to paypal This is beautiful, thanks guys!

Shabad - this is a "running" gig, so they will keep going in the order of payment received. Totally up to you bud

Mojo - Indeed, one way or another ;-)

Absolutely beautiful! I always love seeing amazing stuff like this. It makes me want to get into the Boba game. I still don't have a Boba Fett helmet. Maybe someday this will be the one. Heh, of course by the time I can actually afford one there will be an even more directly related/accurate Boba helmet.

Oh no, I didn't mean to suggest I knew something specifically. I just meant that every time a new Boba helmet comes out I go "that's the one I want" but I don't have the money at the time and then you guys amaze us and come out with something even more accurate a couple of years later. The cycle continues, that's all I meant.
