Guys, I'll probably try to build a prototype, put it up for critique/thumbs up/blessing by the veterans and if it all looks good, we'll give it a go.

    Thanks for your interest!

Guys thanks for the responses I'd like some opinions and see what everyone thinks...

OK guys, I wanted to throw out some thoughts on screen accurate vs. “better than screen accurate” and get a poll on some opinions. I realize the term “better” is subjective so we may not all agree.

OK, this sling thing to me, looks like it was an afterthought. The reason I say this is based on two things, the “weight” or thickness of the leather and the attachment methods. Obviously this thing was not done with the intent to hold the weight of anything more than a paperclip! The leather used looks like it was a garment leather, possibly suede or something similar. On the butt stock end it looks like it was looped and tied into a simple knot, and in the pistol grip side of things it looks like it was just looped through and then the end passed through a hole in the strap.

So, for a prop that is going to be used on screen with no “close-up” somebody’s EE3 for example, you can get away with a sling that is made out of garment leather or something else. I mean let’s be honest, whoever built the prop put the scope on backwards with the windage and elevation knobs out of alignment!

But let’s say you’re out on a troop, where people are up close and personal, maybe taking pictures with you. Do you want a strap or other part of your costume to look sub par? I don’t. I mean we all know that there were several sets of armor made, molded out of ABS or whatever they used. Now take Cyberprot’s aluminum armor, which in my opinion is like Fett jewelry, it’s too pretty to paint! I’d love to have a set of that stuff, and it would break my heart to paint it! It’s better than screen accurate but when painted would look like the part.

So the leather I bought was light weight but in my opinion still heavier than what was used. Personally, I’m going to use the strap I’ve already made on my scratch built blaster, and it is not screen accurate at all. And when I can get a Sidewinder resin kit, I’ll make a better looking sling for it, but it won’t be made out of suede or garment leather because I think if you’re going to have a EE3 that cool, you shouldn’t have a purse liner for a sling.

Let me hear what you think? I’m still going to do a prototype out of the leather I bought and post some pics up tomorrow, but if everyone is of the opinion that suede is what they want because that was what was used I can make that too. I just won’t like it!!! I guess I could offer two versions, screen accurate and better than.

I thought it was a sling for a rifle that had possibly been modified on the loop end. I haven't researched it deeply yet though.

I don't think so, the leather is just too thin. Most rifle slings that I've seen are made of something along the line of at least a decent belt thickness leather. If you've seen 5thhorseman's excellent build thread, he made his own sling and used thicker leather as well and as a result was not able to tie it in the stock loop because of the thickness. You could skive the leather, which is a tool that is used to thin the leather down, on just the ends. However, in the reference pics you can tell it is all the same thickness.

Mugatu, what are your thoughts on the screen accurate vs. better than screen accurate question?

    Thanks for your input!

I'm not totally sure although I'd probably lean toward as screen accurate as possible. However, I don't troop.

My vote is for more of a screen accurate as well, but honestly, anything is better than what I have now. I'll probably be happy either way.

I would prefer screen accurate as well probably won't ever actually use it and a sling to hold the weight of the blaster

Hey guys, thanks for the input. Everybody seems to be leaning toward the screen accurate, which is great. However, I over estimated the weight of the leather when I was in there and bought some a little too heavy. I know I promised a prototype and pictures to look at today, but there is not much point using the wrong thickness, and it would be a waste of leather to do so. That being said, the Tandy store is a ways away from me and I have to go on a day off. That means next Saturday. So I apologize for the delay, I was looking forward to getting something done and pictures up for everyone to look at.

Stay tuned and I'll keep everyone posted.
