    Zam Helmet

Hi, a friend in my garrison is considering doing Zam, and is currently working on a price estimate. Does anyone know if anyone still does the helmets, I saw JD's helmet thread, but haven't been able to contact him. If anyone knows who sells these helmets, and how much they cost, I'd appreciate a PM.

    Cheers,

    Adam

I just recently acquired DCB's helmet molds and should be able to offer some here in the future. I don't know details yet cause I need to finish some other projects and orders first ... but I will get to it as soon as I can. Do you have a deadline you're shooting for?

I hear ya It took my wife a while to get into it but once she did man... she wants all the costumes now

I figured the helmet would be a project I'll try to tackle in the next 2 months or so. I'll be sure to post an update once I can get to work on it.

MandalorFett, nonono, don't point them to me, I don't do helms. Dustin Crops Boy did mine - (I helped only like <2% of the process) and then he sold his molds to Moncal. So, you should talk to Moncal about helm stuff. NOT ME.

hi Moncal, pleeeease put me on the list for a helmet too, cheers.
I'm putting so much time into making the soft parts, its difficult to see when I'm going to be able to even start scratch building the armour.

I haven't been able to get to the helmet project as soon as I'd hoped. I've been a little backed up with other projects and orders but I will get to it soon cause I will need to replace my wifes helmet Please be patient with me and I will have some updates as soon as possible

    thanks,

I'm not making leaps and bounds but thought I should share something

I am super busy with projects so I'm going to commission an excellent fiberglass person to cast the helmets and then I'll either offer as a kit or possibly finished. Also I'm having some troubles with the binoculars. If I'm on the right trail for them, they're not the same ones Dallas found... not to mention the manufacturers are changing their designs.

I'll have some news in a month or so hopefully.
    thanks

Other people resurrect threads by mistake, or they feel that bumping them will be better for the community. As expressed by Gilmore of OK, raising a thread for one's own amusement is considered "trolling." Just don't do it again and you won't have any problems with the admin staff or other members on the forums

I'm thinking Bushnell ??? something like that. I think DCB said he found them at Target (which I don't think you have in the UK ). But that model was from a few years ago, not sure it's still out or even what model it was... Sorry I can't be of more help. I do remember he said they were in the $10-$20 range and he needed 2 for each helmet.

    Re: Zam Helmet

Wow, I have a few questions about these binoculars. Why would 2 pair be needed? I see just 2 eye pieces used on top of the helmet correct? I don't see what part needs to be used twice?

Secondly, if anyone has a model number handy that would help. Or even a photo of the binoculars before they have been torn apart. So far the only 8X21 Bushnell's I see are like this:

and nothing about them screams out to me that these are the right ones

Thanks for any insight or help any of you can give me!

    Re: Zam Helmet

Those aren't the right ones. You need the 10x25. They're discontinued as well so you'll have to go to a store and check their old stock. The new versions have been re-styled and the thumb knob is different.

On another note, they still aren't 100% perfect but I'd say they're about 95% close enough. The reason you need two pair is because there is only one lens that you can focus and is the only one that comes off of the pair. The zam helmet used 2 focusing lenses. Then you have to create the connection between them. You get most of the frame with the binocs but it's still a lot of work to build the pair. I'll be making them with the helmets ... as soon as I get word of the helmets being ready.... any day now I hope he'll give me an update

Thanks for the clarification! So maybe this is the older style?

And these are the newer ones not to use?

    Or neither?

Then again, if we get lucky and you make our helmets + binculars I might not need to worry about this. I still like to get all the particulars and research straight.

Maybe the body of both the 8X21 and the 10x28 are so nearly identical it doesn't really matter. It looks like the same frame is used on those two photos as far as the knob goes and the ocular area.

The frame is the same but the design of the adjustable lens is different. It's tough to explain but the design that allows the lens to rotate and focus is completely different. I bought 3 different pairs and ruined 2 pairs that I couldn't return learning this.

    Re: Zam Helmet

Yeah, that first one is correct. The 2nd phot is tough to tell.. it might be right too. they could be using old photos for their new stock. I have a feeling that even if they were ordered from a website that they would still use the old photo and send you the new model which is why I'm going to stores personally to find them. They even try to give you the new model there.. they don't realize that they're different.

I have a request to those with DCB helmets .. purty please ... Since I traded my helmet I don't have one to look at and my fiberglass guy needs to know exactly where to trim the helmets. I completely forgot to look at that on my helmet. I need some photos of the bottom of the helmet if someone would be so kind Thank you thank you thank you !!!!

I would be interested in buying a helmet when they become available. Is there a list to put my name on for when they become available?
I'm not in a hurry. Just now starting the very early getting information so I can start getting things and spreading out the budget. Figuring some time next year I should have it wearable.

Is there anything you can do?
I was thinking maybe cutting the rear fins out and spacing them differently?
Plus her ear intercoms can also be cut off and moved outwards.

Has anyone performed this sacrilage, or does everyone just put up with it?
Thing is Becky seriously can't just put up with at it won't on without a push. Even then it looks odd

Small... as in small around your head. Though, I can get mine on, it is tight. I did make some custom padding for it, as even just wearing it for a short time gave me a headache! I can live with "Helmet Head" and even "Helmet Hair" but not being overheated with a headache on top of that!

Strange thing is, even though it is tight around my head, I can still pin up all my hair (and I have a lot of thick hair) underneath the helm!

Yah me too, I can tuck my hair in It sometimes gives a headache because of how the sides cave in. If you take a good look, it's not like any other helmet that is round. That's why it is so tight for most. I can't get anything else inside besides my hair. DCB at least "pitched" it with a rubber inside to keep it from hurting worse.

    Re: Zam Helmet

Holy mackerel! I have been doing research on the pics like crazy tonight, scrutinizing stuff because of the pics from Kristin http://imageevent.com/benaequee/cost...singagalaxynyc (GAWD I love her and she don't know how much right now.) I THINK there could be 2 versions of the Zam helmet created by Lucas. If you see the NY runway shots of the Zam walking across the stage and the FIDM shots you see it plain as day. There is a second "ring" around the helmet before the leather bill. This line mimics the leather bill "O" but on the metal dome maybe a 1/4" up from the leather bill. And, technically, since our helmet isn't perfectly round like a bicycle hat, you can call it "dented" cause it does concave in on the sides.

OR** Actually, I was taking a second look, it might be the same helmet, but the leather bill could've fallen, because some of the weathering matches on the particular groove that of the leather bill. I know that inspecting the helm on other FIDM pics and looking at how DCB was assembling the helms, (when I visited him long time ago,) we were both concious how the leather stayed on, because there were some MOM pics that looked like the leather could've easily started separating from the helmet. Glueing a piece of leather on the side is problematic. That is why JDwedd made his outta fglass. Edit** again. Ugh, I think they just terrorized her helm, cause from MOM pic #DSC04712 you could see the leather bill falling right off.

Hmmm...in picture #170, it looks as though the helmet is sitting pretty high on her head. Do you think they padded it for comfort, or does it sit like that on Leanna as well?

My poor little homemade helmet also gives me a headache due to the sides. I guess I should be thankful that I don't have a cone-shaped head I've been threatening to make a new one for forever...maybe before Celebration 5 -

    Re: Zam Helmet

It fit Leeanna perfectly, I think that they padded the NY girl cause yeh, it is high up on the head. If I recall, the hose on the back of the helm is supposed to lay up against the back of the head, and with the NY girl's ponytail/or hair it's raised way too high.
, I have been telling myself, "I'm gonna make a helm" for years too. I want to finish other stuff first. Not to mention get some of my sewing skills up to par.

It really really hurts my head Its so tight that if i open my mouth to talk the movement of the muscles in my head makes the helmet wiggle about LOL!!!

DCB you must have a small head hehehe!!!

In true costumer styleeee im going to try and put up with it but im a large in motorcycle helmets so when i say tight i mean "i need a shoe-horn to get it off and a mallet to get it on" tight LOL

I actually thought about trying to cut down the size of my head before we go cutting the helmet LOL

That said this is a trully stunning helmet and the level of detail is amazing! loving the ball joint

I'm thinking of taking the ear intercoms off (one os lose anyway), sticking them back on but further out and widening the lid a little that way?

No one else has had this problem?

Yeah that's cool. It's an absolutely stunning piece of kit and I'm blown away by it's attention to detail. Becky's fault for having a large nogging

I'll fix it for her somehow. Toying with the idea of sculpting a larger 'hat' and then just glueing all the nice detailed stuff back on?.....but I have enough to do as it is

I think Langsuir666's head swelled when she saw that large box of zam stuff. Hmm, guess you need a shrink.

Ask Hothgirl/Jedinitess if she'll part with her wookie made Zam helmet. I am assuming you bought DCB's helmet from her? Since she is in need of $$ and she sold all her other zam stuff. That might actually fit. It's not as nice as DCB's, but is a "substitute" that may help with your Celebration Europe deadline. But make sure to measure her head and ask for measurements before you purchase

I wouldn't fool with dcb's helmet. Just cause, the leather overlay and stuff, I dunno, you run the risk of destroying something that's really nice, and adjusting width may not solve matters but just make it worse. Re-bending everything and ugh, you can't stretch the leather bill... (ZIA covers her eyes... can't look).

    Re: Zam Helmet

I did sand mine down inside (where it bothered me the most) then added the detachable padded lining - it helped without adding a lot of bulk. It's simply a layer of muslin over some padding that I quilted. I did use extra red silk from the veil on the inside part, so it kinda matches.

I may need to add another layer of padding on the forehead though as there is one spot that really pokes! I made the lining detachable so that I could set the helm down on something without worrying about it getting scratched up! Also, I can wash the lining! (Yes, the silk is washable )

Can you cut it into 4 pieces with a Dremel, spread it out and re-fibreglass it making it bigger? I was thinking you could make a base slightly bigger than the size of her head you could lay the 4 pieces on, then do your fiberglass work, sand and paint.

Yeah I'm thinking of this but it's sacrilege. The way it's made lends itself very well to doing this though. i.e. the lines that run along and across the lid
Just a shame to cut it up cos it's lovely.

BUT! We'll post some pictures up this weekend and then get your honest opinions on what it looks like. But what it looks like and how it feels maybe 2 different things

If it's not comfortable, that's no good. Honestly if you can do a good job of resizing it I hardly would think it's "sacrilege". And from talking to you recently via PM I would think with a little time and patience you could do it quite easy. Nobody wants to wear a uncomfortable costume, you might as well get her some TK armor then.

Looks totally fine. It just hurts, I know. It looks big enough for you, you even have space next to your ear, so I wouldn't worry about moving the ears out. What hurts is the two pieces on the side that comes in, and that's something that you might not be able to help. Try a shoulder pad or something...Wow, you're lucky, you have tabs! All of mine fell off, they were fragile. He never gave me a hose either. Is your hose split down the center on the other side? I am wondering if it's just a tube to stick cable wires in.

Looks fine to me too! Yeah...it just hurts. Try attaching some thin padding to the exact spots that hurt the most - it'll help! Noticed that the right ear piece sticks out - just like mine!

ZIA - the hose on my helmet is just 1/2 a hose, split along the middle with foam and two wires holding it in place. You could easily get some at Home Depot and stick on your helmet!

MM - yeah, now that I think about it...I was hoping he would've pre-installed it into mine. I have some downstairs, and when we were in a mad rush for Dragon Con, he didn't have time to install it. I think I brought some to DCB when we went to visit him way back when and he said he already had some. The hose is from Home Depot or any other place like that but it's a plastic hose for hiding cableing. All the tabs broke off too. I had the first "test" helm.

    nope, modeling clay doesn't stay.
I have to think about more permanent solutions. I think I have to sculpt, mold, and cast a new set to stick on or sculpt out of something more durable and then e6000 them together or something stable.

Thanx for the feedback guys and for the compliment Penny!!

I still thought it sat far too high tho because im a fussy annoying perfectionist LOL!!

Luckily John went at it with a dremmel and took a few of the tight spots out and now it sits so much better!!! Im really happy with it now! Its amazing how much even 1cm will make a total differance to how you see something on yourself.

We are just going to do a bit of work on the brim and it will be perfect!!! SoooooooOoooooo HAPPY!!! I was thinking it was gonna be slice and dice for it LOL!!

Well, what I meant was make the tabs themselves out of the clay, baking them with the same type of metal fasteners as the original tabs, and then using the E6000 to stick them in place. Just avoiding having to make molds and casting stuff and all that....

Langsuir666: Yeah, I ended up dampening the brim and re-molding it a bit too, to reshape it. Glad you got it the helmet to fit more comfortably though! Also be sure to check the screws and such on the binocs, mine tend to come loose quite easily!

MM: true, but I reckon' they'll fall off again. Even as hopeful as I am about their permanency. I dunno~ That's not something that I am really really going to worry about at this point. I have other things on my costume that I am fixing right now. Most people aren't worried about the tabs as they are the other major parts. They don't seem to notice. Everyone's gaze straight for 1) blaster 2)helm's binocs 3) skirt 4) shoe spikes 5) front armor Eh- 4,5 seem to be tied. Most people's glances go head to toe.

MM i changed the screws over to nylon locking nuts for her as just 5 minutes fiddling ended up with the whole assembly coming lose in my hands. I thought there'd be tears but I quickly distracted her, so she never knew.....until now!
    Screws changed, problem gone

Just need to try and find a way to put the whole assembly linked to a servo now.

Oooppss... sorry! Didn't mean to blow that for you! Okay... I won't even ask HOW you distracted her... Yep, think I'm gonna follow your lead on that one though. I'm scared the whole thing is gonna fall apart in the middle of someplace it shouldn't and all the pieces are going to be all over the floor where I can't find them... etc.!

You could always cut the helmet apart and put it back together larger. You might also be able to find a Judz Dwedd helmet...but don't count on that. I believe those helmets were bigger though.

Otter, I stretched my DCB/MonCal helmet out with a hair dryer. I warmed it up, one side at a time, then jammed it on my head repeatedly and held it there until it cooled off. (Be careful, you can heat up fiberglass hot enough to scald your head.) I also dremelled out the front lip a bit.

Worked. Still gives me a headache wearing it longer than 7 hours, but I'm tuning it.

    Re: Zam Helmet

My helmet was a disaster. The one I bought couldn't fit on my head. Then I went to a leather worker who attempted to do me one completely out of leather (minus the back piece and the ear muffs). It was huge. So of course we had to go back to the first one and try to shave more of the inside down. This 2 days before a very important event. In the end we managed to fit it on my head.

This is me with my friend, Jango72

Today me and my dad are going to try and get the piences for the bino unit and attempt to attach the binos. Does anyone know how to cut the Bushnell 10x25 (whatever they are) or have a top view of their helmet?

    Thanks!

DF - you might try doing what Shiruba did - stretching the helmet out with a hairdryer. (A few posts above yours)

As far as how the binocs are cut apart... I thought DCB had made a mini-demo on it here. Did you do a search within the Zam threads? I seem to remember seeing a few pictures on it at one time. I didn't keep copies as I bought my complete helmet from him. (*sorry*) I do know that the armatures themselves are separate from the binocs - other than that... I just don't know.

So, has anyone figured out how to make the binocs functional and if not, what do you recommend for securing the binocs to the top of the helmet so they don't fall off?

Hi, MonCal, I saw your old post from 2006 and I was wondering if you offer Zam helmets. I made one that is so not authentic. I just used it for my son's 6th birthday party and used whatever I found in the house, but I'm headed to C5 and wanted something a little more real.

    Thanks,

I'd be interested in a helmet, too, MonCal... whenever you get around to it. No rush - I've been collecting Zam bits for years and have yet to get started assembling!
