    Star Wars Costume Exhibit: Zam???

    This looks really interesting:

FIDM Museum Exhibit: Dressing A Galaxy

If you look through the slideshow, you'll see Zam in there - I'm hoping that they'll have her costume there at the exhibit. (I think it would be worth the trip even if Zam isn't in it!). Sounds kinda like an expanded version of the Lucasfilm Archives that were at both C2 and C3!

Looks awesome. But depressing to me cause I'll never be able to see it. At least as long as it is in California.

Wow! I am really flattered! You guys are really sumthin. DCB and Moncal ~ you guys going? I hope that if it does happen, we could all go there at the same time. LOL then we could finally have most our questions answered. Flap or no flap on the lip of the shins, how long the skirt actually is, was the skirt dunkeddyed or air sprayed, how the gauntlets were actually hooked, the black inner cuff, was itleather? Maybe they would have more angles we could get at. We definately need a step ladder this time and measuring tape. LOL Mebbe if we have those lazer pointers we can actually get measurements perfectly. Some guys did a method to use lazer pointers (from the hardware store) or something to get exact measurements. Anyone have the link? Mebbe we can just say we are internet costume publicity/archivers and they would leave us to our own devices. Poor DCB was bombarded for having a flash light- of all things in Aussie. They need to give us all a break. Too bad this is just a hobby and we can't have an instant doctorates degree for studing up on this.

The real question is.. when can we make bets to see who will lick the glass of the exhibit first? Since KimnCris are already in CA, I place my bets on them! LOL

Yeah Kim-n-Chris are probably already planted there!

As it is now... I'm gearing toward the 3rd weekend in October (Fri Oct 21 - Sun Oct 23). A couple friends of mine from the DMEB2 plan on being there too - one from San Diego, the other from Florida (So we're kinda working around what he can get in the way of flights).

If we do get a TDH group together for a different weekend - I'll try to make it then too... you might have to really.. really twist my arm! I noticed you didn't rule it out Zam-I-Am! Do you think you might be able to make it? *hoping*

We will also need to make a definitive list of what we want to check out on the costume for everyone's benefit - and if there are any specific pictures anyone needs. Right now I'm not even sure they will allow pictures - the LOTR exhibit doesn't!

They will allow pictures so long as you don't use a flash or tripod. They expect it to take an hour to make it through the exhibit. There is no time limit but if you are in the way of people and you're blocking the flow of things they'll ask you to move on to the next. Also, one ticket, one entry. There is no reentry.

MM~ you guys are really really giving us goose bumps, cause Zam I Ain't and Tatertot would haveta go too IF we could... like I said funds are kinda tight... Man.. GotMaul and MM~You two are really really gettin us antsy about wanting to go... sheesh! On Orbitz it's $560 for us to go the same weekend of Oct 21-23. Foxbatkiller- thanks for the info, I am really really ticked cause on my 5 megapixel digital cam, the flash won't turn off, but I have mem-sticks galore. Black electrical taping it would stink! ARGHGHGHG!! I hate having to deliberate. (ZIA does the dramatic sigh) Thanks Excalibui for the lazer pointer link! When my comp crashed, all my favorites were wiped out.

Well, I finally broke down and went digital - Costco lost one of my rolls of film from C3 *I'm still fuming over that one!* All the pics I had with the celebs and friends... GONE!!! *fumes some more!* Now I've got a good Canon digital camera with a huge memory card and I can turn off the flash!

In regards to the trip.. If that's $560 total for the 3 of you! That's pretty darn good! If it's each... *gulp* Well... then... Yikes! I'm not exactly sure how we can help... but let us know! Maybe we can get a group discount at a hotel?

$560 for all three if infants fly free on united, and it would be a non-stop flight.

I really really want to go. I have some friends from here that are going but it would be so much better to see it in person rather than just the pics .

    I don't know if I can ... probably not.

Let's definitely compile a list of questions and picture requests for whoever gets to go!!

I found out about it in WESTWAYS (triple A magazine) in the back just a little paragraph on it. I am sure it will be mentioned in the L.A. Times.

I dont' think it is as big as the MOM exhibit. I called FIDM and they havne't gotten to many calls about it yet.

It may not turn out to be as popular as MOM, but in my book its a bigger deal. 160 SW costumes on display AND you're allowed to take pictures!

No flash, and stuck under a yellow light. :/ Unfortunately, Zam will be shipped to New York soon, (I don't think the costume is staying the entire time the exhibit is open, but I could be wrong. Hopefully Res'll correct me..) and taken off the mannequin for the first time in eight years.

160 SW costumes on display AND you're allowed to take pictures!
Technically. They include weapons and helmets as "costumes." There are no Imp. outfits aside from two officers stuck in dark corners and AOTC Chancellor's (Royal) Guards. They /do/ have the Imperial helmets though, among others. Most of the outfits are from the Preq's, with maybe eight or so from the OT.

Re: Star Wars Costume Exhibit: Zam???

It was definetly neat to get to work one of the gala opening weekend days at the FIDM exhibit and get to see things early and without a crowd. (Though the lack of crowd of staff and FIDM students/family was probably due to the fact that many of the roads around that building were closed off because of a marathon going down grand street that made it a real hassle to get into FIDM.)

It was great to see that many costumes in person. But, yeah, the lighting in most of the exhibit really stunk. Hopefully they'll fix it so it's not just the Padme's in one section that get all the lighting.

With the gala opening done with now, some of the costumes are being taken off the mannequins, including Zam, and shipped off for a week or so for a show in New York, like Svoor said, but they'll be back for the public opening. The staff and such say they'll be back by then anyway. Hope nothing happens to anything on the show runway. This show is the cause for the fact that the public opening of the exhibit was delayed apparently.

Really wish that there had been some OT Imperial costumes there aside from just the TIE, scout, gunner and Stormtrooper helmets. Or more OT costumes in general really. :/ Those who would really like to see a bunch of Padme costumes up close will probably have a ball though as there were quite a few of those there.

Cool!!! Thanks so much for sharing the pic Svoor! And for the info Resilient! I really can't wait to see this exhibit!

Since Padme is the one who had most of the costumes in the prequels... I guess we should expect the same for the exhibit! :/ It's a Padme-centric universe I think!

Resilient YOU GOTTA tell me when it's going to be up in NY! That way, I won't have to spend bucu bucks to goto Cali... Granted, I really really really want to meet up with all the Zammers too, but not having a day job anymore to be a mom, is breaking my bank. But, if it's near Brooklyn, I can totally be there!

very strange to see on a mannequin.

Doh! no glass to lick! Hahaha! I am sooooo jealous right now. Can anyone just take major pics of the gauntlets right now? It would totally help out so much. Even if they flew it to NY, they would put it behind glass, that's how they treated the costumes last time at the exhibit therein NY. ARghghg! Sigh... Either way, I still don't want to fly out to CA just to find out that it's in NY the week I am there. Drooool...
What the heck is a Zameltoe? Zamel? Camel? what? stop pulling my toe...

Somebody, just take out a ruler and measure the bottom square and top square of her skirt!

It's not going to be in an exhibit there in NY; just on the runway as part of a Star Wars segment during the NY fashion week (which is this week) from what I understand.

Do you know if it's going to be there this week and next week? I will be in New Jersey next week and could stop by the fashion show. mebbe??? Details Details! LOL we are die hards here... heck that would be even more cool if I got to sit in on a Fashion Show with Trisha talking about costume details.

That's an unfortunate series of events, and I can see why you’re a little irritated, but you’re putting your own financial and maternal responsibilities first and that's an admirably good thing to put first.

Since I’m local, I'll be sure to attend the event in a week or so and bring my satchel with ibook and digital camera along so I can take plenty of high resolution pics for the Boba's, Jango's and of course Zammers out there who can’t come.

And anything else in between that I can photograph. It’s the least I can do to repay the awesome people on these boards. :thumbup

Make sure you bring a camera that either has something like a museum setting or one that you can change the shutter speed on. Because without that the fact that they have a no-flash/tripod rule and low yellow lighting in most places, your pictures will mostly be a blur fest. That is, unless you have a really steady hand or are lucky with your default camera settings.

Sure thing, I anticipated something like that would occur, I'm going to be there for at least half the day next Saturday and I’m pretty familiar with adjustments in low lighting situations and it's a pretty great digital camera so I'm not too worried about blurs it’s all about patience.

I'll be uploading them to my ibook on the spot so I can preview the pics before I leave to assure there as good as I can possibly get them.

There's something that-after looking at ref pics and staring down the Zam costume on ref cd millimeter by millimeter for two years, and creating it from scratch and getting all the zammers to collaborate, and then being able to see it yourself- would make anyone go nuts. It's like having a baby- you research and feed yourself right for 9 months just to create this wonderful thing.(of course babies are more of a miracle of life), I don't know if I could settle for just another set of reference pics, especially when Lucas finally has it out for all of us to oggle at. DCB has been most gracious to have started everything with his trip to austrialia and his ref cd. But to finally see it in person... sigh... It's like when I saw the rifle. Don't get me wrong, Andy-Kun, PLEASE snap away, the more pics the better. You would probably take something I didn't see or do, but to have mulled over this costume for years and to spend $3000 in the making of it. Just to mimic artistry (Heck, I didn't spend that much on my infant yet. ) and not see the real thing... It's like the Zammer's version of the Holy Grail, or something. Ok, so it's not Jesus' cup, but you get my drift.

Andy-Kun, don't forget to bring a ruler, and put it next to the gauntlets and the skirt! (Just in case I don't make it out there.)

I believe I understand where your coming from, to make something artistically and physically come pretty close together, as an artist to emulate and aspire the work of a great illustration, costume or piece as inspiration for your own work so you might someday have your very own work to proud of and admired used as inspiration for others to come and perpetuate and to never see it the original source of work in person. It just must be nerve-racking.

I can totally relate and respect that entirely. Heck we all have our own Holy Grail to find. Hopefully you’ll get the chance Zam to see yours in person.

(I’ll be sure to bring a ruler, just in case.)

Yep... I know where you're comin' from on seeing the real thing in person, up close and personal like! I'm chomping at the bit to go see it - I don't know if I can wait until the end of October to see it... *sighs* I still can't belive how relatively close it is to me! Most SW related things seem to be on the other side of the continent!

I also planned to take along a fabric sample, a couple sample pieces from the skirt, part of the cummerbund and a scrap leftover from my holster.... *I hope they don't search my bag too much - or I might be in trouble! * Gotta get my camera settings right too!

I don't know, MM, if I do go, I want to take my whole outfit. Just don't know if they'd confiscate it thinking it's a double.. LOL

    Hi Guys,
Here are some links to photos from the NY fashion show with some of the costumes. The first one is is here:
Zam is on pic #2 and Jango on Pic #38 And #39 I believe. 43 pics total.
    http://www.seitenblicke.at/society/diashow/ansehen/310/
The second is from someone who went to the show, this album has some great detail, looks like more pics to be added Jango is 124-130 here:

Heres a detail shot I found of Zam:

TAlked to Mr. Black one of the FIDM coordinators, and he said the if we pass the plexiglass, an alarm will go off. Laxer pointers it is guys! anyone got where we can find 'em cheap? BTW, since they made the costume in Austrailia, we should adust everything we measure by in millimeters. I might have to and my family and fly up by myself. Whaaa! I am planning on Maul Maus' dates if things get finalized. Oct 21-23rd. FIDM Sat hours are 10:00am-8:00pm Sun 11=5pm I think. So if everyone wants to meet up and get chow afterwards, post! Oh, also if you know of a good eatin place... post.

We need to get a list of shot angles too. Too bad Zam I Ain't is reluctantly letting me go by myself, his 6'3" and Zam building expertise would come in handy.

Darn.... guess that means the "instant" costume idea is a bust!

It's gonna be Saturday at FIDM - Sunday I have to drop a friend (or 2?) off at the airport and drive back home to AZ.

So a Saturday meet-up with anyone interested would be great!

They didn't have those alarms installed during the gala opening weekend. They have them installed now for the public exhibition because some fool couldn't keep their hands to themselves and messed with the Boba costume by opening one of the pouches. But they have security cams all over the place so they likely caught/know who did it.

If you do happen to go in costume, you might as well leave your blasters and such at home. They had us scouts/stormies/etc. drop off our blasters at the security table before we went into the exhibit.

Good things to keep in mind Zam and Resilient, sounds fine to me. I'm heading out on Saturday morning and I'll be wandering around the exhibit for the better part of the day and I wouldn't mind running into any fellow TDH members in the process!

Over on the TFN costume forums, there are threads going where people are asking those who are working in the exhibit, and thus have direct access to the costumes, specific questions about details.

Currently people are pretty much just asking Padme questions, but I figured you guys might want to know about this if you have any specific Zam related questions that you'd like to see if she can answer.

Here's a link to one of the threads. http://boards.theforce.net/Costuming...9/21653422/?39

TOTALLY going to be there now! Thanks to Maul Maus- she's the bomb! Anyone else from the TDH going to be there Oct 22nd? Oh! and Saturday the 22, we should go out to dinner together dudes Please-list some suggestions! Party! I am thinking of bringing my outfit. I have to talk to the museum coordinator. It would be the fashizzle if I could wear my costume next to the real thing. I know that the tickets are sold in 15 minute increments - what time slot should we buy out?

Resilient, thanks for the linky! I haven't had a chance to ask questions-- new mom syndrome, can only take 1 minute to post anything, before we have to get back to baby chores.

sadly (or Happily) we were in Paris the weekend of the big gala and could not make it

There is a big fan day on the 9th of Oct but Kim is so busy with exams that we cannot make it to that one or the on the 22nd either ZIA if you guys are still in town, we have a 501st charity event on Sunday the 23rd if you are interested.

Kim's planning to go to the FIDM thing in November I guess (Our current roomie's already seen it twice- agh!). It's cool they have the blaster, too bad it's in the holster though. We were supposed to get the book too, but no it looks as if $$ issues have caused us to cancel that order. Oh well, hopefully by the time we get to the show it will not be as crowded and we can take our time getting some nice pictures.

I am surprised it has the blaster. During the bad girls of Star Wars at C3, didn't Leanna say something about the blaster being stolen ???? I didn't get to see the show so that's why I'm asking

I don't remember Leanna saying anything about that at C3. I still haven't downloaded my interview with her at the "bad girls" thingee. I'm SOOO slow cuz of the mommy factor...girl costumers have it so much harder than the guys! Geez...

KnC ARGGGGHGH! too bad! would have loved to see you two there and talk about stuff.
I will start another thread though, that way we can "cover the shots" if some of us don't get enough angles of certain pieces.

Dallas? Moncal? Judz Dwed? anyone else going there the 22nd besides me and Maulmaus?

I don't believe that. How can they have only port-a-potties? I mean...this is a regular museum, part of their rotational display area and I would assume they would have to build restrooms for customer use? Isn't there a law or something?

Indeed they do MaulMaus, there located in the exhibit gallery, there hidden but they are there, single stall facilities by law.

When I attended the event, I asked the security personnel after overhearing and seeing the individual running the exhibition passed by and gave the go ahead to all the staff to allow attendees to use the restrooms in the gallery as they needed.

And trust me there a lot nicer, roomer and cleaner than a port-a-potty for a costume change.

So there shouldn’t be any problems for ya Zammers finding a place to change as long as you inform the proper personnel running the event.

I am going to buy just one ticket then. So that I can change and not have to go back in. I am shocked that Mr. Black would make it seem so difficult. As, he's the FIDM email correspondant. Maybe he's not the "proper personell."

Thanks Andy-you have been so entirely helpful in so many ways. :thumbup

Another reason that he might have told you that they only have port-a-potties available for you is because the large multi-stall restrooms that they do have in that building are on the second floor near the admin offices. An area that, during the gala opening weekend, they only let students, staff, and the event costumers go to. They probably don't want general attendees running around up there where it would be harder to supervise them. An additional Padme costume is up on the second floor near the elevators and they have to be protective of that aswell.

It's too bad that you can't make it to the exhibit on the 9th, Zam I Am. That day's an official 'Fan Day' where a bunch of us from the san diego, OC, and LA groups will be working shifts. You would have been able to get in on that and use the dressing areas we have. :/

It's ok, California events are KimnCris territory I just want to wear my costume so that I can see how accurate/inaccurate my costume is after 2-3 years of research. All I want is confirmation of how good a job we zammers did. But yea, I hope that Oct 22 won't be so entirely busy and I can have adequate bathroom time and usage at the downstairs "one" bathroom at least. .

I am not sure if you have already secured a place to change into your costume on site there at FIDM. There is a FIDM SCHOLARSHIP store. (looks like it is ran by students and they sell alot of old vintage time good will clothes and assessories) it is on the corner of the block right next door to the school. I was in there killing sometime before I went into the exhibit..it looked to me like they had dressing rooms (curtians) so..maybe that might work out for you, I dont' see why they would have a problem with you changing in there. When I was in there NO one was using the dressing rooms.

You can call FIDM and ask them about that.

I am soooo excited. I feel like a little kid again about to goto the amusement park for the first time. Muhahah! Thank you MAUL MAUS!!! Thank you Got Maul, for pushing me to go, and Manos for posting saliva inducing pics, and Andy-K for all your help. Let's just hope that my camera won't wig out. I have to black tape the flash. UGH! Hopefully Maul Maus' stuff will come out ok. Giddy giddy giddy... --just had to get it outta my system hehe

Pantone chart, leather swatches, research book pencil, camera, extra mem-sticks, video cam, mounted lazer pointers, costume, batteries, cell phone, mommy mayhem material, Museum tickets, plane tickets, anything else? I know it's weird, but I wish they had the stand up next to the costume, cause I want to see the difference between the hero suit and the exhibit suit.

foxbatklr- nice shots, what size rez did you take it at, and tell me about your camera, I feel like my 5 mega pixel will turn out ****** because of the auto-controls. Do you have certain settings on it? Your shots are pretty darn clear.

Heh, my camera is a whopping 3.3 megapixels...I think you'll be just fine. I don't have a museum setting or anything and I couldn't use the flash because of the rules. Fortunately, Zam is pretty well lit. Unfortunately the Palpatine costumes that I was interested in were very poorly lit and none of my pictures came out.

The original size of the photos I posted are double that size (1600x1200). With a 5.0MP camera your photos will end up blowing mine away.

In particular the red velvet one from ROTS when he declares himself Emperor. Good luck though, it's almost completely dark in that section of the exhibit. I'm also interested in the one next to it with black and brown colors. It's the one he duels Yoda in.

Got back last night from the exhibit! It was just fantastic! Loved seeing all those costumes and even better seeing it with some good friends! ZIA - what can I say - you were the hit of the exhibit in your costume! One of the directors of the museum wanted her picture and even let her sit up in that X-Wing!

The funniest thing that happened during our trip... I cannot talk about! I'm sworn to secrecy! Though the next best thing was that when ZIA went to change out of costume. She's wearing jeans, her TDH shirt (of course) and Zam shoes! Because she forgot to bring her regular shoes!

Foxbatkllr: I tried to get pics - but dang that was dark in there! Another friend took some pics in infrared or nightvision or somethingl like that, which came out detailed - if not color accurate. I'll pm you regarding the pics later today!

If anyone has night vision on their camera, you totally have to get pics of the gauntlets on the under side where there is a cigar looking thing on the right zam gaunt. I had so much fun. Maul maus you are so cool. She had everything covered. I totally forgot 3/4ths of the stuff I was thinking about getting, cause I was so inandated by the security gaurds asking "how long did it take you to make yours?" and star wars shop people about taking pics of me in my costume. I was thinking, "let me get back to picture taking, PLEASE, wearing this was for reference shots!" Well, we did get to get into the x-wing, that was way cool- I wouldn't have been able to do that outta costume. But, I forgot to do the skirt comparison, the shoe comparison, etc. By the way, there is no WAY the spike is 3 inches long. It is definately 1 1/2" max @ 2" and bone looking rather than rubnbuff on the paint scheme. Our pantone color for the neoprene is a little more vivid than real costume. A lot of her stuff is a more faded/washed out looking. I referenced all my colors to the standee rather than the MOM pics. The standee had to be color enhanced or the hero suit. I might let my suit stay out in the sun one day to bleach the look a little ?? Couldn't get a lot of the shots we wanted cause of the angle she was at. Dallas-- it's up to you- dude, especially when you get there in November. You going for FAN day?

I'm absolutely proud you made it out safe to Cali and got what you came for Yvonne!

I'm still urked I couldn't make it out to that meetup, but all the same I glad you had a great time and it really went better than you expected for you and the other Zammers.

I look forward to the pics and it sounds like there is still plenty left to do Zam wise, keep up the good fight ZIA! :thumbup

    Take care!

Sounds like you were a hit at FIDM ZAM! I wish I could have made it out as well. Why can't they turn the lights up a bit in there really. So many details are lost to us. I would think that her costume is just faded rather than your fabric being too vibrant, just like you said. Because the Fett is definatly faded from time. I don't know if the sun will fade it out enough. You might try a bleach wash. I know that is a scary thought.
Have you seen the pic of Zam in the Dressing the Galaxy Book? Great action shot, you can see all the squares of her skirt, very cool!
Which by the way I'm a bit ticked about... where the heck is Fett, cept for the tiny little pics in the corner, no offense to Jango but he got a full page??? What gives huh?

When is fan Day in November by the way?
I'd like to take my kids in their costumes, I'm working on a AOTC Battle for my 5 year old and an Anakin ROTS, and of course my Fett if I can get myself some time to work on my stuff.

Re: Star Wars Costume Exhibit: Zam???

Yep... finally got my Dressing a Galaxy book - and Zam looks more purple than she did at the exhibit! :/ So is the hero costume more purple or is the exhibit more washed out? Or did they simply overdo it in Photoshop for the book?

I've got some of the fabric that I can experiment with - it's at the end of the roll and was where two pieces were sewn together so it's useless for the costume itself! I'm gonna cut a piece and stick it out in the Arizona sun for a few days, see if it helps (though summer would've been better!) and I'll try your recommendation of a bleach wash... Otherwise, guess we simply base the whole costume on the color of fabric we have.

Oh, and the reason why Boba didn't have a page, is because Trisha Biggar didn't design Boba - though I think they could've given him a bigger pic!

Maulmaus! You outted me! :LOL Thanks for not talking about the slow computer scenario! By the way, make sure that when any of you guys decide to go, If your cameras can do night vision, then make sure to switch it on when you get to the darkside room. I should have gotten Scott to take some of the shadowed shots of Zam. Oh well. But man o man, it was great. I got sick afterwards, but slowly getting better. Haha, I even ran into someone who was a coworker of Shane Felix-director of Revelations, on the plane, it was hilarious. I havent yet had a chance to see how some of my shots came out. I wanted to do a ref cd, but it would be better if I waited until the exhibit is over, that way, if anyone else sends me pix of stuff I didn't get, then I could put it onto that cd. Haven't gotten my book yet. Apparently, they only have SOME of the actual fabric swatches in each book. I pray dear Lawd, that I get the one with the Zam swatch. Someone even stole the one out of the sample book at the FIDM exhibit! I saw the staple marks. Sheesh! By the way, for fan day- email mblack@fidm.edu- he's the museum coordinator. They had one in Oct already, and setting up another one.

I'd been hunting for photos and saw that benaequee's Runway show photos were mentioned. But her album never had the Zam photos added. A Quick message to my costuming and props friend and she has now added the Zam runway photos to her album!

    http://imageevent.com/benaequee/cost...singagalaxynyc

She has some nice photos of the back and the skirt. I never realized that the entire skirt was double laced! (I don't have my Zam standee yet or a disc of reference photos).

Make sure you click on the option at the bottom for "original" to see the highest res size.

Yes, let me talk to her. She didn't have a problem letting Maggie at Padawan's Guide have the high res Padme photos. So maybe we can work something out

Re: Star Wars Costume Exhibit: Zam???

I know, it is a shame she 'forgot' to upload the Zam photos last year! Kris comes to my rescue again. I relied heavily on her photos for my last SW costume. Her runway photos are the only good reference we had for the blue Padme Family Gown.

I think it is interesting how much color has come off of the vest and gloves over the few short years. It makes me wonder if some advise posted in this forum on how NOT to color the vest was what the costume department did? It may have been TheWookie that warned not use dyes over something that has already been colored. It won't stay on. The color just seems to have nearly totally rubbed off of the white leather

She's going to unlock them for a short time. So if anyone is interested, you might check around now (Tuesday evening). She just doesn't want people reposting them as their own!

Thanks so much Kay Dee for pointing us over to Benaequee's website! Thanks to her for sharing! Awesome Pics! (I remember seeing the others before, soon after the event and was amazed with the costumes then!) I wished I could've been there to see it myself - must've been fantastic!

Also, can someone PM me with a way to contact benaequee? I'd like to talk to her about getting permission to include these pictures on the Zam reference CD. I think they'd be a great addition!
