major jumpsuit revelation....

    major jumpsuit revelation....

after going though my pictures AGAIN.. i discovered something about her jumpsuit....

it's NOT a jumpsuit at all... but rather pants and a half shirt... I guess wearing a foam padded suit AND a vest would be too hot in her mid-riff section... so they just lined that area in a lighter black material...

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

DCB, Was your biggest question answered ie, How tall she is?Is the black part of the midrif section definately attatched? or is it just a unitard underneath? Cause, frankly, getting a black unitard at a thrift store or maybe just a exercise/sporting goods store might be cheaper than having it sewn on- I dunno. Or, is it a black mannequin underneath the vest- with everything hanging out of the halter?
    My imagery is:
    sleeveless black unitard underneath,
:two piece body suit with: 1-longsleeve halter- double
laminated lycra neoprene. One double laminated lycra
neoprene pants with zipper in the back. Extra inseam
layers (plus welt seams) and suspenders. Definately,
2-way stretch material. The lycra-neoprene seems pretty
thin, but with just enough foam-like padding.

Maybe we should all go for a .5 mm gauge thickness for the neoprene. Maybe that would give it the right "creases" too...But then again-I'm no seamstress.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

.5 mm is what I think was used. I am also thinking the balc Dallas is seeing is the Maniqune's black fabric. Well as to the 2 pice bady suit we have now had that confirmed by dallas. now I am not sure about the zipper in the pack on the pats. If it is 2 way streach then no Zipper will be required. I recall many times of getting into a wetsuit syle called a farmer john. The pants is more like a pair of coveralls and there is no zipper in it just just pull it all on. The top then pulls over all of that. Well just my 2 cents worth.

That's good to know, cause then we wouldnt have to pay for zippers! Yeah! So these things have to be very form fitting then...Measurements are going to be crucial--oh yeah, the suspenders will help with that problem..hehe

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

actually, i think the black is part of the original suit. Look at the picture of her "left armpit area". See how the black actually goes over the purple on parts on the top right side of the picture.
Also, the mannequins were covered in black nylon... whereas this black fabric is more of a heavy material (like a heavy cotton or almost a denim).

I'm actually kinda releaved that her suit is like this... i think it'll be easier to work with.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

DCB, sorry to be ignorant--but I don't see how the black overlaps the lavendar lycra. I think that's more work, ie more material to buy ARRRGH. could you circle the part you're talking about it would help meesa understanda..

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

    right here:

you don't think it would be easier to make it as 2 pieces¿ i think it would. No fussin' with long zippers... no worrying about getting the length, inseam correct, etc...

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

Dallas I still do not see where you think that overlaps. It all looks to go under the pruple of the suit. I am not saying you are wrong, I just do not see it the same is all. Anyone else care to add their point of view on the black material in the circle? Lets take a concensus and then do what everyone thinks.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

Dallas, I definately think that the purple part of the bodysuit is easier as a two piece, BUT, stitching the black denim to the neoprene upper halter part seems like lots more trouble. Get my midrift? hehe ok, bad pun. I would rather have 3 pieces. Two purple=one is the longsleeve halter, and then second is the pants with suspenders, (and instead of sewing the black denim/cotton to the purple halter) then third, just wearing some black unitard underneith it all. I can understand the black denim to some degree. If it was totally stitched together, you wouldn't have the problem of the halter scrunching up towards the neck. But that could easily be solved with safety pins or a couple of simple stitches to a leotard. My 3 cents.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

What a revelation! Well.. I see where Dallas sees the black overlapping. Thing of it is... Zam never shows skin (or at least I never saw a flash of white that I imagine you would see since the stiching is not tight on the vest), so SOMETHING has to be there.. be it black fabric or whatever.

I'm no seemstress but I think it'll be eaiser to make a half shirt and pants. Wear a black unitard underneath.. no one will care if the black fabric is connected or not.

Woohoo!! Can't wait to get to work on this.

    See I was right

Mentioned it being a top and pants on another thread Didn't realise it was so short though

The black does over lap, but it seems to be a fold rather than following a sewn seam. It could be the elastic of the suspenders 'grabbed' the black and has raised it.

Or there could be just tacking stitches where the black overlaps the purple to temporarily hold it together. While working on the set of Jack of All Trades the hems of our dresses gradually fell apart (they used webbing to save time) and at the back they used those ilttle plastic tag guns to hold them together So quick fixes are not uncommon.

So you could easily just use a black body suit underneath and use tacking stitches or hooks and eyes to make sure the purple top doesn't shift about too much (being that short it's all to easy to lift and poke out the armholes of the vest

The suspenders idea is great actually, especially as the fabric the pants are made of doesn't have much give.

Excellent images btw, these (or rather the originals) must have evaded me last time I was here

Oooh, actually this reminds me of my Griddlebone costume from CATS, I had a bolero type heavy fur top and pants, but where the corset sat over the midrift I just had the lycra body suit. Not only did it reduce cost it also reduced heat *and* bulk. People thought I had the fur continue under the corset (I could't see how personally

And with a heavy vest like the one Zam wears, you don't want any extra bulk added to your actress

    Edited to add Doh!
Looking at the huge publicity image at the zam site (labeled ref3.jpg, you can see the lower edge of the top and the blackness underneath and between the lacings.
I didn't zoom in close enough last time I saw this and thought the seam line of the lower edge of the top was a fold.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

Does anyone know if those welt seems that go into the inner thigh are mirrored on the back side too? I would think it was a waste of material cause it's hidden by the skirt. But anyone know?
nevermind, ref3 pic that dcb had (studio shot-twirling zam) shows it mirrored on the back side of her legs.

I think that wookie was right about 2 costumes- the hero costume(studio shots) vs. the MOM Australia costume. I just went back to a very helpful lady at joann fabrics. She said that the twirling zam pic's body suit fabric creases much like ultraleather-this stuff that is like really thin leather, only on her suit they added some type of foam backing too. When it creases, it looks exacly like the creases in the ref3 pic. I am going to ditch making the hero version. Ultraleather costs $64.00 a yard that doesn't even include the foam backing. The material that dcb captured in his pics for the two piece suit at mom looks like nylon-lycra because dcb's close-up showed lots of nylon and spandex-like fibers. I guess the one in MOM is the stunt version?

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

there is NOT two versions... trust me

The cardboard standup is from the same photo-shoot as the "twirling picture"... and the cardboard standup is the SAME material as MOM... so there you go.

Also, i think Wook suggested that MOM was a "stunt" version because the veil wasn't lined in satin... but trust me, it is! It's not obvious in the pix, but there was red fabric on the MOM costume.

    Re: major jumpsuit revelation....

Those darn creases in the ref3 pic are really throwing me off then. Maybe it's just wrinkles in the lycra cause she has worn it so much? Dunno.
So when do I get an appointment for a volcan mind meld?

i see creases like those all the time on things. It reminds me of those cheap store bought halloween costumes like the sponge bob s.p. one that was out this year. It was cheap fabric lamenated on top of thin foam - it has the exact kind of creases Don't be thrown by the Zam publicity pictures... there is only one suit and it IS lycra on neoprene

I dunno where to get cheap-store bought costume-like lycra. Ouch, gotta call more neoprene companies then. At least I've learned a lot, but that really sucks. I developed amiable relations with these people. Well it's narrowed down now.

Don't tell me you know about quisp, and don't know what a startrek volcan mind meld is?(I know it's blasphemous to talk about startrek this forum) Here goes, it merges your brains info into mine like thus . Then afterwards we will both be thus Get it? Unfortunately, it's not subject specific.
