Launchpad

New Hunter
Started on a Zam for my wife. Found some neoprene for the suit, just need evrything else. Will keep up posts with progress. Nice to meet everyone. CIAO

Welcome to TDH Launchpad! There's plenty of information here about how and where to find stuff for that Zam! Don't be afraid to ask questions either. We've all been there before. We're all looking forward to seeing your progress pics too! :D

Zam Skirt...

Having trouble accessing the skirt sticky. Locks up every time. Has any one made a count and a few good pics would be nice. A template, sizes of the squares, anything???? Just looking for another link that won't lock me up. THX Mathew

Hmmm.. I don't know why it would lock up on you. I just tried and accessed it just fine. It's a very long thread - so it might just take some time to load.

You can look at a pic of my skirt in my photo album if you want.

Lemme see if I can condense 3 pages into one post... 15 columns and 12 or 13 rows. All skirt squares is about 2 1/4" tall (there is about a 1/4" overlap for each row). They get wider as they go down. This is what I have for widths on mine... (I have 13 rows)

2 Rows: #1: 1 3/8"
1 Row: #2: 1 5/8"
2 Rows: #3: 1 3/4"
1 Row: #4: 1 7/8"
2 Rows: #5: 2"
2 Rows: #6: 2 1/8"
3 Row: #7: 2 1/4"

If you still can't read that thread, I'll have to upload some of the pictures and post them separate. We don't have a template per se, but we do have some guides for how to make it.

If you still can't access that thread, let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to do that for me! The internet here in Northern Italy is only 2 mbps...:cry God I miss the states:cry and cable internet:cry and from what I here, that's fast compared to the rest of Italy at only 500 bps. At least we get to come home in October(y) I think it is the long thread. Most threads load just fine, but it's the long ones and the ones with pics. If you have any more spare time, I would love more info on the skirt. Thank you again Mathew PS OH YEA How do you start the stitching? and where? I've got some good pics, but no clue.

In italy the normal internet speed is ADSL 7 mps (like in my house) and for who want pay more there is also the 20 mps (DSL) and the optical fiber.

Sorry for the small offtopic:)

What kind of info are you after? :)

Me and Becky made hers - eventually, but we didn't go on previous advise as the leather strap would have been too wide

Our thread is here. We tried to document as much as we could :)
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showthread.php?t=16862

I used a solderring iron to make the holes. Just get a screwdriver type blade for it and push through. Dont leave it in too long as it'll mark the squares
After a while you can do 2-3 at a time :)

Any help just ask john.danter@btinternet.com

Hmmm.. when I lived in Germany we had faster internet than here in the states. :facepalm Though now my cable is faster than what they have... so go figure. ;)

No problemo... Later this afternoon (Arizona time ... just to confuse you ;) ) I'll post it either in this thread or another more appropriate thread - but with a direct link from here. Now... this is assuming that when the cable company comes here later today to upgrade my tv-cable to digital cable they won't royally screw up and murder my computer cable. In which case I'll also be on dial-up ...

Okay ... here are some of the basics...

This is a "pattern" of the skirt as ZamIAm made it. Please note that the length of the skirt squares are WRONG They should be 2 1/4" at least. If your wife is more than say 5'7" tall - you'll need to adjust the length of the skirt accordingly - so it fits from the waist to the back of the knee (each square has about a 1/4" overlap)

Here's a picture for how we came up with the square count for the skirt. Also handy to see how it's put together.

This is a close-up of the corner edge of the skirt that I took at the FIDM exhibit in LA a couple of years ago. It shows how the lace stitching.

Here's a graphic of the main lacing of the skirt made by DustinCropsBoy:

And the matching graphic for the edges of the skirt:

skirt_stitch2.jpg

I have to add that when I did the lacing on my skirt... I started on the bottom and laced up the toward the top on each row, leaving the extra lace at the top for tying off. It was easier for me. Also.. don't be alarmed when the columns fold together - they eventually flatten out.

I put all these graphics onto printouts for my own use when I was making the skirt... along with some other pictures I have. I made those into PDF's if you want to download them.

zamskirt_pics_tmb.jpg

That's a thumbnail of the first one. The file is large at 1.5 Mb (lots of pics) You can download it here: http://www.dmeb2.org/images/zamskirt_pics.pdf

This is the second PDF:

File Size is 570Kb. You can download it here: http://www.dmeb2.org/images/zamskirt2_info.pdf

Hope all this helps...

DAG? Is that Dressing a Galaxy? Mine doesn't say anything about it... It only has that flaring skirt picture - but much darker.

Yes, Page 133, the paragraph starting "Another costume which called for considerable..." on the 11th line down it says "twelve rows with fourteen columns."

*slaps self on forehead* Yep... there it is! :facepalm That's what I get for rushing to look through something before I eat dinner! *low bloodsugar* Yeah..that's it... Just ask some of my friends how bad I am with that...

Well... I'm going with the picture before the text. And I'm also going with what will work for me based off that picture, meaning if I need 1 more row/column to cover the same area as the "real" Zam, then I'll add it. Nobody is going to count the squares anyway - erm... except us of course ;)

I agree with you and your picture clearly shows 15 columns so perhaps there were a few different versions or its just a misprint?

MM, loving those pdfs :)

Could I be cheeky and ask you for a copy when the time comes? We're havinga revamp of costume tutorials on the UKG site and no doubt Becky maybe asked to help out with Zam. She'd mention it's your work of course :)
No probs if you say no. I hate theives too ;)

WOW!! I guess I should ask more often! Thanks for all the excellent info! That will work! So is purchasing the puncher for the holes the best or using the soldering iron method mentioned. I guess it doesn't matter right, cause you wnt see them and should look worn anyway. Talk to you all later. Mathew

Hmm... John, let me PM you regarding the PDF's. In general I don't have a problem, I just have one concern which I don't want to weigh this thread down with.

Launchpad: Well... I used the puncher and it worked great. Sore hands...thought I might lose my mind punching all those little holes... but it worked great. :D I only made a couple of mistakes *see low bloodsugar coment above* I don't know about the soldering iron method - I didn't try it. If you already have one... why not give it a whirl. Otherwise - I'd buy the hole-punch. Just my 2 credits.

Someday...when I have time  I want to get all this Zam stuff put into a more accessible order. Real life just seems to get in the way...

We just used the soldering iron and a file as the punch was very expensive and not widely avaliable in the UK. In fact it was near impossible to find, in the end i think we found one for about $70 and i wasnt paying that for a hand punch LOL

Will post pics as soon as I get the $%#@ thing to work right, but the leather skirt is together. WOW what a peice of work.:p Not sure if I would have done that for anyone else but my wife.;) It looks awesome though. Still need to be a little more... maybe a layer of light lilac color over the whole thing. Still looks cool. Working on posting pix. Ciao

Finally got the camera to download. Here is the progress on the skirt:

and the back side(sticks hold the skirt flat while hanging)

What do you think about the overall colors? I think it all needs a light coating of purple. Will post more soon.
