    WIP: Jango Jetpack

Since I love the WIP posts here, I decided to share my MOW Jet Pack painting progress. PLEASE let me know your suggestions !

I will be updating the pictures as I move along.

    Thank you, Enjoy

After a LOT of sanding and filling... and sanding..... and filling.... and....

Missile: still needs some touchup where the black meets the white (and R'nB to come)

Thrusters: Black needs some cleaning up. But it's a start.

First off, the white meat ....

OK - after a few business trips, got some more done on the jet pack. Had a bad experience with a wonky nozzle on Krylon red paint - caused a whole bunch of splatter..... Of course, being the eternal optomist, I continued on with it, then went and bought some Rustoleum with a good spray tip.

And some more from last night.....

Can't seem to get the yellow right. I have tried Rustoleum Farm Equipment, Krylon Sun Yellow... going to try Krylon Farm Equipment. Going to the store today to but some brown and orange - and try to layer it in with the yellow to mute it a bit.

Can't forget the rocket and trusty thrusters:

Just hit a little spot with the Krylon Farm Equipment ... yeah ... don't mix Krylon and Rustoleum paints, unless you want a faux crackle finish . Apparently the sceintist/mixologists at Krylon and Rustoleum throw in some reactive chemical so you can't cross brands - ha ha. Thankfully, I only did it on a very small section. Nothing a little 400 grit won't take care of.

I found a couple of Rustoleum American accent colors that I am going to brave the cold and try to find.

Will post the results once I am back !

Man, that's great. I'm a ways away from starting a jet pack, but I think that's going to be my favorite part.

OK - today was a complete waste. The paint incompatability caused me to sand down the yellow to the primer again.

Note to all: Buy one brand of paint. Krylon and Rustoleum don't get along together all that well....

This is the most fun part ! (Aside from assembling Cruzer's gauntlets) Other than the helmet, I think it is the most iconic part of the costume.

Hope to have some more progress soon.....

    Dear Scotty,

    just a tip.
Never mix any colors from different brands together.
    NEVER!!!

I had to learn this also the hard way

Only if you have colors that come from the same line and brand than you can mix the colors.

Sorry to hear that you have to sand down that much.
But better yet than after you finished your jp.

May the paint be with you

Loanstar - I will remember this FOREVER !!! - I suggest everyone heeds the same advice.

I found some yellow and brown paint that I used on my Star Corps Clone, mixed a little up, and achieved a color that I am happy with. I had to brush it on, but a little 600 grit helps with any obtrusive brush marks.

In the meantime, I got the Rub 'n Buff on the missile:

I can't wait for the unveiling. I am very worried about my masking job on all of the other colors. (Hey, that is what touch up is for.. right ?

The yellow needs more orange, IMO.

Foxbatkllr, indeed the photos are really washed out with the flash. The yellow is way brighter in the photo than ut really is. That yellow is a bear. Even after it is finished, I will probably actually get my airbrush out of the package (I have had it for 3 years now......)

Here is the final color - the blue - again - it looks way darker without the flash. This color looks too "royal" to me.

Man.... I just finished the blue and I want to rip all of the tape off NOW !!!!!

    Re: WIP: Jango Jetpack

I took Foxbatkllr's advice and got some more orange in the yellow. I am pretty happy with the color I have now.

A bit of clean-up to do on the edges (and the overspray on the blue in the upper right )

I am going to use fine grade steel wool on a piece of plastic and get the shavings that come off the steel wool like one would use fuller's earth for weathering. It is cheaper than actually buying the stuff, and it looks really cool in the cracks and crevices. Minimal "dirtying-up" will be done, just enough to give it that "used" look.

Any tips on aplying the decals would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Nice JP.

What with the yellow bit in the top right? Shouldn't it be blue?

Indeed Mando Guard, the yellow in the upper right is overspray. I still need to address that part.

Thanks for the comments - this has been a fun build / paint.

More done tonight. I think this will be my Valentine's Day date....

I still need to get it weathered in the cracks and crevices with a Acrylic black wash.

Thank you Mandalorian guard, I ordered some decals from this post:

    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showt...jet pack+decal

I am still worried about getting them on without tearing or messing them up. Once it is all weathered (lightly), I want to use a clear-coat, but I am terrified of doing that because I have had some bad experiences with the "orange-peel" effect.

The paints I used are as follows:

    White: Rustoleum 7797 Semi-Gloss White
    Blue: Rustoleum 7727 Royal Blue
Red: Rustoleum 7765 Regal Red / Rustoleum 7762 Sunrise Red
Yellow: Testors Spray Paint Dark Yellow and Racing Orange
Black: Testors Gloss Black Enamel (Brushed on)

I figure if I use a Rustoleum brand clear coat, I should be fine... except for the yellow. I have a scrap piece of pvc painted yellow that I will test the clear coat on before I commit to spraying the JP. Wish me luck on that one.

    Re: WIP: Jango Jetpack

Your pack turned out nice. For the yellow areas, I used the farm equipment yellow and then lightly dusted it with an orange. That gave me the desired/correct shade.

As for the weathering, try this... do a black wash then a brown wash. thin out your paints ( I used acrylics do to the ease of use for me ) so that they are really watery. Dab the wash in the recesses, then with a second ( dry ) brush carefully "flick" the wash downwards. Just remember that less is more as you can more easily add than take away.

I didn't use decals either... I hand painted all of the symbols.

Now get on with the finishing!!

Anybody know what the colours are for members in the uk?

I know the decals are different from Jango to Boba's. Also no damaged parts (scratches) on Jango to Boba. Jango does have his weathered though.

Are the colours different from Jango to Boba?

OK - So I think I am finished. Got the weathering done. It is difficult to get a good photo of the weathering, as the flash washes it out, and not using a flash looks like it is TOO dark. I got the decals on, and I am quite happy with the final results.

    Some final pics:

A shot of the trap door. (Yeah, still gotta paint the back..)

The door is held on by magnets behind a couple of tabs. sits pretty and tight. More magnets, more hold... more weight.

Also a shot of the battery holder and switch for the beacon light.
