    Vult's Jango Build

    Updated: 2/12/2012

    - Scored a pair of Crow62 Repro boots
    - Decided to build my own bolo girth belt

    Hello everyone,

This is my first WIP thread here on TDH. I already have my custom mando kit and have Official Member status with the Mandalorian Mercs. I have decided that the next kit I wanted to build is Ep. II Jango (had to spell it out since my vod Kelan / Wil is doing an Open Seasons III Jango). I want this to be a high quality kit and I know it will cost a several thousand dollars before I am complete.

My Goal: 501st/ BHG qualified by July 2013

Here is my (updated) plan based on Tommy's format:

    1. HELMET: Cruzer BKBT
    2. FLIGHTSUIT: Bleahhh
    3. FLACKVEST: LSFU
    4. GLOVES: Amazon
    5. GAUNTLENTS: MOW with Darkside aluminum upgrades.
    6. CHEST AMOR: Cruzer CC
    7. BACK ARMOR: Cruzer CC
    8. SHOULDER BELLS: Cruzer CC
    9. COD: Cruzer CC
    10:THIGH ARMOR: Cruzer CC
    11.SHIN ARMOR: Cruzer CC
    12.BOOT ARMOR: Cruzer CC
    13.HOLSTERS: Cruzer
    14.AMMO BELT: SEEKER
15.GIRTH BELT: made it myself following Cruzers WIP and ebay bolo supplier
    16.BOOTS: Crow62 Repro's
    17.STANDARD JET PACK: MOW Kamino
    18.WESTAR PISTOLS: Master Replicas
    19. Knee Armor: Dark Side CC Run ??
    20. JET PACK HARNESS: Seeker
    21: KNEE ROCKETS: Purchased

    level 2:
    - A dark gray or slate blue, vinyl or leather gasket attaches underneath
and inside the helmet sealing it to the neck. ??
    - The silver cheeks should be rounded at the top unlike the more
    tapered cheeks of Boba Fett.
    - Must have a white light in the beacon- Check!

    Level 3:
    - RF Servo- Kyle Ski
    - Crow Repro Run- Check!

Feel free to throw any questions that you might have my way.....I am an OM over on the Mercs with both my custom and my Jango.

In case you are wondering.....I sport a full Cruzer kit with LSFU soft parts and an Asok helmet. Seeker JP harness, BFUK Kamino pack and Arena pack, TL00be girth, Cruzer holsters, and Seeker ammo belt. All of the paint and fitting was done by me.

Glad to have you here on TDH

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

    Thanks Mullreel!
I'm very excited to have this as a winter project. This weekend I won an auction for a mint set of Master Replicas Jango Blasters, I purchased the MOW Jetpack kit, and my boots came in- they are awesome! Looks like they will require very little modification and are super comfortable. Nothing like having a brand new set of boots to work with.

This is the 3rd costume I am working on in the last 2 months and it gets expensive to do it right, so I told the wife I would trade stuff around in my other hobbys to pay for this one. I have a lot of guitars and as I sell one, I will buy more gear for this. I sold one this weekend and it payed for the jetpack & the blasters, I have 4 or 5 more to go which should cover the majority of this build. I plan to do all Cruzer armor and gauntlets, but I really want to at least try and make my own holster. I also have an ESB Han Solo that I would like to build a quality holster for.

In other news, I need to hurry up and post some more guitar stuff on ebay to earn money to spend on this. I've already dropped $1.5 k on this Jango in the last week and haven't even started working on anything yet, lol! Gotta love this hobby!

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Ok, now I am excited- I sold 2 more guitars this weekend and was able to get my order in to buy the holster rig and replace all my armor with Cruzer CC, plus I have my order in for the SEEKER Jetpack. My MOW Jetpack is suppose to ship Thursday. I will have about 9 weeks to take my time working on the Jetpack and have been wanting to learn air brushing. I already had the compressor, so I bought what looks like a decent air brush gun from Hobby Town.

Does anyone have any advice on what paint I should use or learning to airbrush?

Which jetpack did you go with? Kamino or Arena?

I have a color list for each in the jet pack thread I did a few months back. I also put some links in the thread to other info I found and used.

Kamino- I want my Jango to be the one that gave Kenobi a run for his money, not lost his to Mace

Thanks Mullreel, I will check your links!

One correction....Jango Fett BEAT Obi Wan Kenobi on Kamino, and then again in space. It wasn't just a run for his money......I know he didn't kill him but he beat him both times.

EDIT: Deleted this post since I decided not to make my own boots and got a pair of screen accurate KCPC Repro's.
This will allow the page to load faster without these big images that are no longer part of my build.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I updated the first post. I expect a lot more traction in the next few weeks. Some notable updates:

    - Purchased and received a nice pair of Crow62 repro boots off someone in the Cargo hold
    - Flight suit arrived so I should be able to start work on dying it to my desired Kamino "blurple".
    - Cruzer armor has shipped, should be here by Monday.
    - Cruzer BKBT helmet should ship in the next week.
    - SEEKER harness sounds like its getting close so I can work on the Jetpack
    - I received by Darkside aluminum Jetpack parts including white-lighted beacon.
    - Based off Cruzers recommendation, I ordered 30 meters of 7mm bolo cord to build my own girthbelt.

I just need it to warm up a little here so I can get back out in the garage.

What I would do with the shoe polish you have there is use it a bunch....THEN get some Kiwi shoe wax. Take the wax and do a bunch of coats over the polish and itll look like regualr leather. Thats what I had to do on part of my steering wheel that the leather was coming off on it.

Here's a little update. All my Cruzer CC armor & holster arrived today. These are AWESOME! My Master Replica pistols fit perfectly in the holster (Ya, I couldn't resist walking around the house like a gunfighter for a bit). Here is a picture of the stuff so far:

Looking good so far! Don't forget to take some 0000 steel wool to the CC armor under cool running water to bring out the shine. The cool water keeps the polyester resin from warming up and "gooping" on the surface.

I still have a lot of touch-up and need to add details/weathering yet, but the basic colors look right to me. What do you think?

I was thinking since the Jango collar is all black anyway I will probably go back to using the resin one that came with the MOW kit and save this Dark Side metal one for my Boba build.

I would say they look close, I added an orange mist to the yellow sections and a purple mist to the blue sections before I sealed and weathered it.

    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f28/j...etpacks-45079/

I thought I listed that in this thread but I don't remember for sure. I would use the basic collar for this pack too, no use in messing up the nice metal one.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Ok, I got some work done this weekend:

First the Cruzer BKBT (love this helmet too). I polished out the CC, cut out key slots & visor, then painted. I then used the ear caps to mark where I need holes to be drilled, then cut them out with my rotary bit. The ear cap pieces are now drying then they can be assembled. I still need to get the pin striping, mesh for the keyslots, and determine what I want to use for padding. Then it will just need the weathering.

I am making my own girth belt following Cruzers WIP. I cut out the backing and bolo strands. I glued the first one down on the center line and let it sit over night while I worked on the helmet. The next day I filled in all the way to the bottom and let that sit over night. Yesterday I completed the rest up tot he top and let that sit overnight. Next step is to trim the extra off the strands, fold @ glue over the ends, punch holes, and stain. Feeling pretty good about how this came out- Thank you Cruzer for all your help!

You may also see that I did some touch-up paint work on the jet pack. That is about all I can do on it until I get my SEEKER harness and the correct decals from Lucksy31.

Are you planning to make the keyslots a little "nicer"?
Also, might be the flash though, the lighter blue looks to light for me. Do you have a pic without flash and outside in daylight?

    Hello, Hasenscharte

Yes, I still plan to clean up the key slots with a file. I just wanted to get the majority of it cut out before I got carried away with the painting. As far as the color goes, the lighter blue is the exact same Ocean Blue that everyone has used. It must be the flash.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Here is an update from last nights work:

I moved the helmet forward to the point of adding the pin stripes and start the weathering.

I let all the glue for the girth belt dry over night, so last night I punched the holes, laced it up with a hiking boot lace, and began dying it.

I still have touch-up work to do yet, but I must admit that I am very happy with how it came out. Especially since this is the first time I ever worked with leather, lol.
I found some really cool leather dye in a spray can from a local cobbler. I got 2 shades for my girth belt to give it depth/ wear. I used the darker one to weather up my Cruzer holster rig.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I also made my girth belt too wide. The WIP said 7" and it looked good until I put the seeker ammo pouches over the top and then it was really obvious. I went and pulled the CRL from 501st and it said Approximately 5" or 21-22 bolo strands. So last night I carefully cut off 4 strands and brought it close to 5 1/4" to match the CRL and it does look better with only 3-4 strands above and below the ammo pouches.

My LSFU vest seems really long when I put all this on so I'm going to have to (gasp!) cut it down some once I get my harness and tie this all together via the SEEKER method.

I did a little more clean-up and detail work on the Jetpack while I wait for the decals to get here.

My vest is long like that also. It helps it to stay in place under the girth belt. But I still need to cut some holes in it for the jet pack straps in the front. Right now I just roll the vest under a bit so that I can snap the cod to the jet pack harness.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

So if I can get a helmet gasket for this I will have everything I need to get level 3 (RF Servo set-up is in the mail). Of course I still have some sewing to do on the flight suit. I sewed in the clips to secure the hoses inside the sleve last night. I need to do button holes for the knees. Any other suit alterations I miss? I have bleached and dyed this thing at least 10 times now and I don't think the fabric is the easiest to work with here. No matter how much care I take to mix the bleach in hot water before adding the suit (completely pre-soaked), the bleaching doesn't lightened it evenly or nearly enough. It leaves me with spots that I have to re-dye purple and denim again. I've done this 3x now so I would love to hear any other suggestions.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Thanks Mullreel. I don't know if I could roll the extra under as it would make me even fatter than I am :P. I will play with it and see what I can do, but I can't see any benefit from having it extend longer than the girth once it is all tied (snapped) together with the cod, holster, girth, JP Harness.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

the way that I bleached mine was to use a spray bottle. I made up a mixture of about 10:1 water to bleach. Then I hung the jump suit on the back porch and sprayed it. I let it sit for a few minutes then I washed it with hot water and detergent. I did this a few times to try to reach the color I wanted.

What type of fabric is it? If it has a high polyester count it will be difficult to color.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I did that the first couple tries and it wasn't having much affect on the Blue, so I went to using the entire washing machine full and letting it soak (even over night once). I think it is polyester, I iwll have to check that.
    Thanks again.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I would recommend taking some of your brown leather stain and taking your time in applying it with a 1" brush to reach the crevices of your girthbelt, and then immediately wiping off any stain on the surface to keep from staining that area any darker. I would also recommend washing your flightsuit in a hot medium level wash starting with 1/2" cup of bleach, and then drying it completely to see what color you're left with. If that doesn't work, move up to 1 cup. If that doesn't work move up to 1.5 cups, etc. until you get the desired lighter blue that is a good color or that you can restain lightly to get the desired blue. It's what I did on my polyester coveralls and it worked perfectly and gave the cloth a nice soft well washed feel/look.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Thanks for the suggestions Cruzer, I will check them out. I did a fair amount of work this weekend. I started out with weathering my Crow62 Repro boots and putting the snaps on for the boot armor:

I also did a fair amount of sewing on the flight suit. I made all the button holes for the Knee and shin armor and also this elastic band to hold the pants under the boot armor:

I completed the work on the girth belt outer wrap and am very happy with it overall.

I received the RF Servo kit and am lucky to find that I was able to fit all the components in the MOW gauntlets after all. I had concerns over these gauntlets, but I think I ma going to be happy with the end result. The first thing I had to do was remove the "dummy" switches on the flame thrower housing and sand it down:

I then relocated the circuit board into the top of the housing and ran the real switches into the housing:

...and installed them where they belong. A little filler and Rn'B and they will look better than ever and have actual functional switches that will control the RF servo:

I also did a little work on the cod/ holster/ thigh armor, but I didn't take pictures of it beyond this stage so I will have more to update later:

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

Ok, here are my latest updates:

#1) I lowered the ears on the RF side and added the pin stripes. Aside of the servo and weathering- this baby is done.

#2) I attached the holster to the thigh armor via Chicago screws:

#3) Since I will be waiting a bit for a Dark Side CC knee run, I reappkied Rub n' Buff to the other set of knee's I had until they looked about the same as my CC armor.

I've also added all the snaps and elastic bands that run inside the flight suit so, for the most part, the lower armor is done (except for weathering). My SEEKER harness should be here by Thursday and if my Jetpack Decals get here from Lucksy31, then I may indeed get everything completed this coming weekend- Well ahead of my July goal! Then I will have to decide what I want to finish next- Boba SE or Han?

If you are interested in keeping everything in correct proximity of one another, I would recommend attaching the various pieces together with either snaps or Chicago screws. Here are a few links showing what I mean. I even like to attach my ammo belt to my girth belt using Chicago screws. So that it always stays in the correct position when trooping.

MY SEEKER harness came in yesterday and it is amazingly comfortable- nice design and thank you Arturo!

Cruzer- that is awesome with the snap like that. I took a little bit of what you added here, mixed it with the elements I loved about Arturo's setup and came up with this:

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I put it all on for the first time tonight and had my daughter snap some shots for me to see what I have left to do on it to get it right. This is what I have noticed so far:

    - still need to do some padding/ helmet interior
    - my chest plates bunched up a bit on me so I need to move them further out
    - I have to cut off the extra nylon strapping from the harness now that I know what I need to use
    - my harness straps we're not even in the back so my jet pack was crooked
    - knee's could use a little velcro to keep them in place, they slid down a little
    - could maybe trim an inch off the back armor, can't tell if it was hitting the girth in back or not

Please let me know if you see anything else- Thanks!

you already mentioned most of the critiques I would have thrown out. The only one you didn't say that I would recommend it to move the jet pack higher on the back. Jango's jet packs sit fairly high.

check out this promo pic for how high it sits.

    Re: Vult's Jango Build

I just ordered another flight suit from Carole (Arkady). I like the reviews I have seen of her work and was really impressed that she doesn't dye her fabrics, but rather goes and selects them based on the screen versions. Equally impressive was her turn-around time and I received some awesome news that it was already completed and shipped yesterday! This means I should have it in time for a big troop coming up this weekend so I should have some updated pics from this event to post next week.

Wow! I got my new flightsuit in the mail today and is it awesome! The fabric is much better quality and seems far more screen accurate IMO.

Here is the swatch from "Dressing a Galaxy" for reference:

Here are my two suits side-by-side for comparison:

Notice the stiching in the arms? Jango had them, now I do too!

Also- look at the pleats in the back:

This makes it far more comfortable. I've been wearing it around my house for over an hour now because I can't believe how great it is. I have to take it off now so I can start sewing the button holes for my leg armor but I should have some great pictures after the event this coming weekend and I will be sure to come back here and post them. Carole- YOU ROCK and have earned all my Flight Suit business moving forward!

Thanks for posting your progress with your Jango project, it's helpful and a pleasure to read. I'm running a number of parts and about 6 months behind you with mine, lol. I also have MOW ROTJ gauntlets I'll be converting, so those pics and points are particularly helpful, as are snap/armor attachments. On the gauntlets, did you strengthen the inside any (add fiberglass/etc)?

    Thanks again,
    - Tom

Ijust realized that I have not updated my thread at all (slaps hand) in a while. Since I replaced the flightsuit I have been very happy! Love it! I have also had 5 or 6 troops that I have neglected to post pictures of, but here is one from our "May the 4th be with you" troop. Yes, my temporary knee armor slid down off the velcro on that side- but my DarkSide CC's should be replacing these this weekend.

Thanks Syper. Yes, I am loving it. I had a great troop last weekend for Make-A-Wish where I had the privilege of handing them a ticket for a whole week in Disney World. It was an amazing feeling seeing such happiness in two young boys that you could tell have been through hell already in their short life. This hobby is worth EVERY penny and EVERY hour spent. It is worth every cut, burn, gluing, and smashing of fingers. Pick what you love and start. Don't stop until you complete it, then keep repairing and upgrading it. In the end, it is worth all of it.

Edit: I neglected to mention that I have made some more adjustments and a few repairs already. I was noticing that my backplate was overlapping my girthbelt so I took a couple inches off that and it is much better! I have also received my DS knee's but they are too small for me. I have tried a couple different ways of gluing it with different pieces on the inside, but none of them felt strong enough to survive a troop when I put them on. I decided to just get a set of RKD's inner knee armor and glue the DS CC part on to the outside of that. I feel pretty confident that this will work for my thick knees since I use his knees on my custom mando and they fit perfectly.

Honestly, I like them a lot. Thye look great and are reasonably comfortable on a long troop. I was in kit for ~ 9 hours last Saturday. I must admit they seemed to get scratched up pretty easily last weekend at Philly Comic Con. I don't know if I just had kids stepping on me a lot there or what. I've worn them probably 10 times before that event and not scratched them at all, then all of the sudden I got a bunch in one day...

    Hi Snowaure,

As I recall, there were two, maybe even three issues of Star Wars Insider that had Jango Fett on the cover (one had him and Zam, I think),but the image quality inside was disappointing (as a reference source). I was looking at buying them on eBay, but a friend had copies at home and after looking at them told me to not even bother.
