    Turning Jedimite into Jango!

My daughter wants to add a new costume to her Star Wars wardrobe. We have a jedi, Han Solo, Leia, &Tatooine Luke. Now we are working on Jango, the one I kept putting off....Until I discovered your site!

Thanks to all for all who have shared! Yes I have used search, downloaded armor plans and read, read, read!

I am going to attempt to post some of our productions pictures, (this is the first time I have done more than read threads!)

We have started with the trash cans and I think it is going pretty well. Haven't cut myself, and only glued my fingers together once!

She wants to buy a helmet. (guess she doesn't have that much confidence in me) Will she look like a bobble head in a rubies? I told her she had to buy her own and she has enough for the cheap one.

She wants the whole thing done by Halloween.

    Re: Turning Jedimite into Jango!

thanks for the info on the helmet, I am afraid that would sadly deplete her savings

I did a few things, I can't remember reading on this site I thought others might find helpful. If these were already posted, sorry.

When cutting out the pieces, I used rubber cement to hold on the patters. It peeled right off, leaving no residue and kept them from moving around, saved time instead of tracing.

As shown in the pictures in my original post, I used duct tape to hold my curves. I taped the pieces in the position I wanted, put them in the boiling water, then into the ice water. No burned fingers and it did a really good job. I was very careful to make sure that the tape was on good before I put it in the water. I didn't want it to come loose and splash. I used lots of tape to be safe.

I forgot I had these pictures, but maybe someone who is going to try the trash cans will find them helpful.

Looking good. I unfortunately didn't think of using duct tape to help curve my trash can pieces. Nice idea, beats holding them with your hand.

Yes you are going to want to get either a child rubies helmet or a tbone helmet. I love the progress and the fact that a little girl wants to be Jango. Following in the fottsteps of Mirax!

    Re: Turning Jedimite into Jango!

Hmmm, I found a really interesting Bobba helmet in our garage. I sort of forgot about the strange ebay purchase my husband made awhile ago. It has two cracks in it, but can it be converted without my going nuts???

I think once I get the cracks patched, (ideas???) I reshape it by putting it in a hot car with something stuffed inside, then add the craft ring to keep the shape, then cut out the visor and plan on adding the visor (welder lens) when the rest is done. Do I sand the whole thing down? Do I use the rub n buff, or paint?

Does everyone wait to do the gauntlets till last? I am not looking forward to it at all. I keep wandering down isles in Walmart looking for some inspiration to make it easier.

I may luck out on the jet pack. She wanted to watch the "Jango parts of Attack to the Clones," she thinks it is really cool when the jet pack shoots off! Then I won't have to worry about her trying to fly off her bunk bed!

Wow, that kid is lucky to have a mom like you.

To fix the cracks, put some sort of glue in there on the inside once it's shaped (I used JB weld) then reinforce it with a strip of fiberglass. Put some bondo on the outside of the crack and sand it down. No one will ever tell it was cracked.

WOW--you should be mom of the year for this!!

I had a proud moment myself recently: we were perusing through costumes at Wal-Mart and we found a bunch of Darth Vaders with one Boba Fett kids costume. My daughter looked at it and said, "Mom, I wanna be your favorite for Halloween." I said, "but we still have your Darth Vader costume from last year," she said, "No, I wanna be Boba Fett!"

    *tear* so proud, so proud!

She's 6...wish our daughters could meet Jedimite! I just went ahead and bought the Wal-mart one, but hopefully I'll have time to make a costume . It would be nice to match her--maybe next year. But I do have my trusty Jedi costume...

I do have a question: Jedimite, do you have the blasters? I need to find something for my daughter to use as a rifle, but not sure--might just have her go empty-handed in order to carry her goodie bag.

I cannot WAIT to see pics of this finished!

    Re: Turning Jedimite into Jango!

I've got my 5 year old son into the mix as well. I got him hooked two ways...

    1. He saw me playing the video game Star Wars Bounty Hunter, in which Jango is the main character you play.

    2. I've been working on scratch building my own Jango costume using the templates provided by WizardofFlight, and when he saw my helmet ( also when Zombierepelent stopped by my place with his Terminal Fettler helmet ) he thought that it was so cool that he asked if I would make him one. :o

What father could refuse a request like that.

For the Westars, you can easily pick up a set of Rubies Jango blasters like the one my son is holding in the picture for a reasonable price. ( they've got them listed on EBay all the time for under $30 US )

Good luck with the rest of your costume build, you're currently further along than I am. Keeping in mind though... I am making two costumes at the same time.

Ok for the helmet you can actually boil it just as easily as putting it in the car. As for the cracks and to fill in the dent get this stuff called PLASTIC FUSION you can find it at home depot. Its an epoxy based glue that can be sanded and built up really thick. The helmet is a rubies and will be a little big but you could cheat a little and trim off some of the bottom edge. It will throw it off but it will counter the bobble head a touch as well.

If it looks like that latex helmet is going to be too big for her, I would recommend contacting t-bone and purchasing one of his "kid sized" helmets...they're amazing and the price is pretty reasonable.

Oh, and to repair that type of helmet, Devcon(sp?)Plasti-Weld from Walmart works really well in sticking to that type of material while remaining a tad flexible.

I haven't done anything about the blasters yet. I have looked at the toys on ebay, but am torn. I enjoy target shooting, but we have avoided toy guns. I want her to respect guns, not think of them as "toys" to play with. But the costume needs the holsters at least! But empty holsters? That doesn't seem right!

Here is where we are right now. Washing silver off our hands everytime we touch it!

She can't wait to have it all done. Still need to get a second small trash can to do the knees and then the gauntlets, helmet and gloves.

Weststar Blasters--I did see those at Target. About $8 each.

Oh yeah--I'm like that too, Jedimite. Mom taught me from an early age about respecting use of guns--she had served in the Army and was very picky about even water guns, but I still had my twin metallic-plastic six-shooters lol I make sure to go over a list of rules with my daughter too.

I have been thinking about trying one for myself too, My husband is a TK, but I don't know if he would think I was intruding on "his" time.

The process has been fun. My daughter has had a big kick out of doing all the parts she can do. My 2 1/2 year old seems to think he may need one. I think I will just make him wear one of her old jedi outfits for awhile though!

I guess I may wind up too busy to ever do one for myself!

We have attached all of the armor! The holster was a big disappointment, it is going to take a lot of modifying. It is way too big and the places where it was glued keep coming apart. I have tried a couple types of glue, but no success yet.

Once we took the holster off she ran around the living room for awhile and nothing fell off!

I am going to try the ammo pouches next. The hardest will get left till last.

As for your costume I say go for it, if your worried about your husband thinking it may invade on his time...well simpley ask him what he thinks about you doing something.

Hey this is looking really good. I hope the 2 sets I am making (4 and 6 year old) turn out half as well. I am also struggling with the gun issue but will work something out. I am probably going to eliminate the knee plates-especially for the 4 year old as they are both just terribly small to support all of this. I am axious to try and get the jet pack done also. Thinking about making it out of foam to keep it light! Great Job and an inspiration to the rest of us! Make time for those little ones because these are the things they will always remember!!

If my husband actually told me he wanted to dress up in a SW costume, I'd probably wonder what pod person had taken his place, but I'd be SO happy! If he ever dressed as a Mandalorian, he wouldn't be wearing the armor long.

The costume is looking wonderful so far! Great work!

    Re: Turning Jedimite into Jango!

Here is my low cost ammo pouches and girth belt.

I made the ammo pouches using WOF templates scaled down with a few alterations. I had some extra vinyl left from Tatooine Luke's belt, and used that and a 50cent belt from the 2nd hand store. Yes, I know there are 7, but the extra two bothered her, so off they came.

The girth belt is some cotton cord sewed on to the top and bottom of two cotton straps sewn together.(Thanks to Joann's for a 50% coupon and a 40%coupon.) I was planning on dyeing it, but found a bottle of 77cent fabric paint that was closer in color. I watered it down and my daughter helped paint it on.

I used velcro to hold the ammo belt to the girth belt. I am planning on adding some more velco to help hold the holsters in place.

By the way, my daughter can get everything on except the belts by herself!

Can't wait to see how it finally comes together with the final parts. You ever figure out the bobble head helmet issue?

I find it amazing as well, that your daughter is holding onto the Westar the exact same way that my son holds onto his... with the fingers through the handle instead of around it.

I look forward to seeing the next batch of pictures tomorrow night.

yea, well as for as she holds the blaster, she had it upside down and backwards for awhile, she said she wanted me to take a picture that way because then it would look like it was spinning, just like when he was in the arena. Hmm, maybe she watches a little too much Star Wars

The costume survived our Halloween party! We had a great test run on Sunday at our Halloween party. The helmet survived being passed around and bounced across the yard!

We only lost one piece of armor on the boot, and that was easily reattached since the velcro just came apart.

After the goodies and games, the kids all went and played on the play set. She only took the helmet off, wore the rest of the stuff.

She was a little upset that when she fell off the teeter totter (well she was standing on it instead of sitting) that she put a small hole in her jumpsuit. I told her that she looked like she had some battle damage now!

Our neighbor boy looked her over good, then wanted to know where her jet pack was and her "arm things".

Sorry I couldn't get these to you before Christmas, but I just finished them up...and the "adults" around here have been keeping me busy!
I went with an expanding roto-cast resin for the shells (making them very lite) and a Feather Lite resin for the parts (lite enough to float in water), so these should be some very comfortable gauntlets for her to wear. I lost your shipping info, so if you could shoot it to me again, they'll go out asap. Monday, if USPS is open.

    Thanks,

    Sweet!!

You are definitely going to make her day when those arrive!!

I have to know... how much are you wanting for those kids sized versions? I still need a set for my son.

I've PM'd you with the mailing address that you'll need.

For you, I could do a complete set like you see in the pic for $75. Fiberglass backed gel-coat would be $25 more, but they'd be heavier and sturdier.

Thanks for the addy. They'll go out asap.

Thanks WOF. If I had known about your awesome Jango templates when I built the masters, they'd had been a lot more accurate!:thumbup...but they suffice for the kids.

seeing as I haven't been on here for awhile, visiting family for the holidays, computer issues......

imagine my surrprise when a box arrives from Cruzer!

She knew exactly what they were before she got the bubble wrap off!

We will have fun putting these together! (I hope)

I will now be using the search tool to find out what I am supposed to do!

Thank you so much Cruzer. There is a convention around here pretty soon my husband usually goes to, so the timing is perfect. She went with him before as a jedi and really enjoyed it.

I got brave last night and did some trimming. She enjoyed wearing them for a while. Rubber bands held them on for a bit.

We made a few stops around town for some parts. Still need to find a few more things, but now have an idea of where to go. Monday maybe.

Tonight, she did some sanding and her favorite part, rub & buff! She let me help a little. We found an old stiff paint brush really helped in the tight spots.

We had a little accident with the rocket. I will attempt to fix it later this weekend.

I can not believe I've missed this entire thread until now. I love mini-Fetts! You say your husband is a TK? She has to troop an event with him, he'll be completely upstaged! It'll be awesome.

I have not forgotten to get pictures up. I just kept putting off finishing the gauntlets. It just about killed me to start putting them together. I was so afraid I would mess them up!

Anyway they are together, for now. I still want to put a hinge on them.

She got to do her first troop at her school carnival tonight. She had a really good time, just got very hot.

She had a hard time eating. "I can't get my drink to my mouth!" She was only able to eat half her hot dog without help.

My son is the little Vader. He really wanted to dress up too, so we threw something together.

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your help. You made her a very happy kid. Someday I hope she will pass on help to someone else in the same generous manner.

Your girl makes one good Fett Tell her to keep it up.
And your an amazing mother, a real trooper (pun intended ), doing that for your daughter.

Looks like I wasn't the only one to dress up tonight. Glad some one else had fun dressing weird for a party.

    Awwwwwwwwwwwwweeee!!! She looks absolutely awesome!!

I'm so glad that she's still enjoying getting suited up. I know all too well the difficulties with nourishing one self while in costume, it's a task unto itself.

That reminds me... I really need to get going on my next projects so that Allie can have a completed suit.

Your daughter is absolutly ADORABLE. I hope when I have kids (which won't be for many years and until after I'm married) I can get them into Star Wars.

I can only take credit for pulling the gauntlets out of the molds. Everything else is Jedimite's awesome mom and Jango72's great helmet!:thumbup
