Tommy's Jango Fett WIP, Questions and Help me thread.

Hurrah! My first piece came in today. (Helmet) (Thank you so much Kurtyboy) So I'm going to list out my "shopping list". Let me know if I'm forgetting anything. I know I have small amounts of work I need to do for a lot of items, such as buying paint etc...

Any help with the ????? would be so much appreciated.

Here is a pic of the Helmet that arrived today. Snug fit, but it fits. I'm going to add the mesh for the back vent, some padding (what do you suggest for padding and where do I get it, also what glue would you recommend.) possibly a fan. I'm not going to do the skirt, as people complain about the heat and oxygen being a issue.

    In my humble opinion....

    Armor = CRUZER or BOBAMAKER
Arena Pack = Man of War or BFUK
    Gauntlets = CRUZER
    Holsters = CRUZER

Don't forget to add your KNEES to the list. WELCOME and GOOD BUILDING!!

Thanks for the info. I added Knees on now. Bobamaker is working on Jango Knees, should be done shortly.

I would recommend Cruzer for the gauntlets too. If you look through my build you will see that I rely heavily on Cruzer. He does great work and is a good guy too. I bought some items from Bobamaker too, he was good to work with. My only issue with Bobamaker was that the volcano was erupting in Iceland and it slowed down the shipping. I doubt that the volcano will be erupting again though so he should be good to go.

On the JP I agree with MOW and BFUK. BFUK is a bit more screen accurate. I troop with a MOW pack however and I love it.

And most of all........feel free to post or PM any questions. There are plenty of Jangos here willing to help.

Gauntlets, Thigh, Shin, Boots armor & holster from Cruzer.... You won't go wrong with that!

Remember to add in those small parts on the Gauntlets (Darts, Rocket, Kamino saber dart), you can get it accurate from DarkSide too

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to remember not to set off any volcanoes when ordering.

Those sold fast! Would have loved the shoes, but they were not my size. I will be ordering my shoes from Crow. I just got a sweet deal on an Arena Jet pack, I'll post pics when it comes in. (It's unpainted, but it will be fun painting and learning weathering techniques. I know there's a ton of resources on here for that.)

Just make sure to assemble it all AFTER you paint the jetpack. I was dumb and assembled it first. It was not fun.

Thank you for the tip Ribann! Knowing me, I'd hook it up to a harness, put it on.. then try to paint it.

Ahh, so you're the one who out bid me on the Arena pack! Congrats, it was a great deal! I want a Kamino pack more, but I saw it at that price and figured why not. Good deal, for sure!

Ha! I woke up at five in the morning to do the final bidding on the pack. Sorry about that eopie herder. I Did get a photo of the back of the pack, I noticed only two close vertical slots for the harness, so I may need to do some cutting work. I'm not familiar with an arena pack, and don't know if that's just "how they are made". I also didn't see the curved top on the pack from the angle of his photos, so I asked for a photo of the back. 2012-02-23_20-43-34_973.jpgWe have so many Boba's in my local 501st, I decided to go Jango, so I really wanted a different pack to distinguish myself.

Yeah, don't worry...I wasn't upset. I like the arena pack okay, but still prefer the Kamino one and that's what I had planned for my Jango. This one would have been an extra, so to speak. Good luck on painting, I can't wait to see how it looks!

If you are doing an arena pack this link might help..... http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f28/arena-jetpack-40185/

this was my WIP thread that included my trial and errors.

And the back of my pack looks completely different, do you know who the maker of your pack is?

No clue on the origin of the pack. At some point I will get a Kamino pack. But for now, I'm trying to save on costs as much as possible and this was a good deal. I'll check out your link Mullreel.

Re: Tommy's Jango Fett WIP, Questions and Help me thread.

Buffalino Sentinel Boots came in today. Size 10.5, fits perfectly. (depending on the shoe I take either a 10.5 or 11) The boot is amazingly comfortable. I'll have to dye the yellow stripe and yellow trim. I'm thinking of just using some fabric paint, what do you think? I'll remove the laces and replace them with elastic cords (two rings in one of the pictures), those are two hair thingees my daughter uses to put her hair in a pony tail. (I don't know what they are called) I'll then paint the swoops with silver.. then mount the armor once I get the armor.
Here are some close up pics for all those interested.

I would use rub-n-buff on the sides of the boots. It stays on well and looks good.

Re: Tommy's Jango Fett WIP, Questions and Help me thread.

On the arena packs they usually have a door that can be taken off to access the inside of the pack. You will need two horizontal slots cut up higher than the slots that are there now. Maybe you can cut out a square door in the middle of the pack. It won't be seen when you have it on. That way you could access the inside of the pack. The other thing you could do is rivet on some straps to the pack. Although I would highly recommend reinforcing the inside where you are going to put the rivets with a piece of sheet metal or something like that so that you don't crack the jp over time. You would still need access to the inside of the jp for that so either way you may have to make a door in it.

For the shoes you can try fabric paint. Sometimes it has a hard time adhering, so you may have to use some shoe polish or regular paint. I second the rub n buff for the accents. I have had it on my boots for a couple of years without having to touch it up.

FettFanatic: How would I secure the door once it is cut? Also, do you know approximately what size I should cut? Small, medium or large door? Oh, and one more, any idea of what tool I should use to cut it with? Thanks, sorry for all the questions.

It depends on how you want to attach your straps. If you are going to just rivet them to the jp then the door would just have to be big enough for you to get your hand through. If you want to route the straps into the jp and attach them to something inside the pack then the door may have to be a little bigger. I would tape off the area and use a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut out the door. If the door is small you might not even have to put it back on since that side of the jp will be sitting against the backplate. If you want to put it back on you could use magnets or velcro or go more elaborate if you want.

Okay I get what your talking about, I just looked at Bobamaker's Jet Pack. Although I'm having trouble envisioning how it all hooks together with a harness. I might be seeing Darth Vorhees tomorrow, maybe I can get a look at his pack.

Most people use parachute clips like you see on backpacks that have two pieces that clip together. The bigger female side is attached to some straps on a harness and the smaller male end is attached to the straps coming from the jp. If you haven't picked up a harness yet I recommend Seeker's harness. It is the most comfortable one I have used. It includes all the clips and straps you will need. It also has some straps on the front if you want to attach the cod piece so it doesn't slip down.

Do they use clips at the bottom of the pack also, to secure it from bouncing up and down?

There was a clip on the real movie suit, but I don't use one and I don't remember seeing anyone else use one. Unless you are doing jumping jacks in costume which I wouldn't recommend the jp will stay pretty stable. It may move a little side to side, but mine doesn't even do that once clipped on. I think you would be fine with just the two top straps and clips.

Sweet, that was very helpful. Also good to see how large you made your door. I just painted the boots and I think they came out okay. (pic attached) I had the rubnbuff silver and there was a black spot on helmet, and I thought, sweet, I'll just cover it up. Now instead of a black spot, I had a bright silver spot, so I put more on and try to blend it... hope I didn't screw it up. My wife doesn't know the difference... but then again, my wife isn't in the 501st or on the dented helmet. photo-20-.jpgphoto-21-.jpg

The boots look good. I guess we should have warned you about the rub n buff. A little goes a loooong way. If you put too much on it will rub off, but if you use a little and buff it in with your hand then a soft cloth and let it dry it will not come off. I can't see the spot in that pic of the helmet, but maybe I am missing the forest for the trees. The good thing about all of this stuff is that you can almost always strip it down and start over.

There's two layers on it. I did the first with my finger, it looked really weathered, but not "full", so I did a second and used a fine tip brush to get the points. I plan on weathering it down, (maybe naturally from just wearing it.) Really happy about the helmet then. I don't think people are going to notice. The fabric paint worked very well to cover the yellow leather. TY Fettfanatic.

Arena Jetpack came in. New Question, does anyone have any idea at what measurements is best to place the slots for mounting? I did a quick sketch, but I'm just guessing. If anyone can look at their jetpack and give me an idea, that would be great. Also if anyone has a photo of the bottom of the jetpack. img_0874.jpgimg_0875.jpgjetpack-outlines.jpg

Is this what you were looking for?

I really just guess-timated bro. I used Seeker's flickr as a reference as well as many of the images posted on here. Notice though in most pics with Temuera Morrison as Jango, the jetpack sits higher up that what you'd normally think:

Maybe wait until you get your girth and back armor before drilling holes in your JP? Just my 2 or 3 cents :P

The jetpack definitly sits higher than most people think. I had to move my clips down to get it higher and it is still a battle to keep it high enough sometimes, depending on who is helping me gear up.

The lines you drew in post #29 would be way too high on the pack. It would sit very low on your back. The pic in post #30 looks close to mine.

Ribann threw some common sense my way about waiting until I have the back armor to do the cutting. I noticed the pack is small and does sit fairly high. I'm going to do the painting this weekend, so I'll do the painting research (have a lot of links saved already) but have to learn some weathering techniques.

A piece of sponge and acrylic paints in brown, black, and rust colored shades will be your best friends for weathering. The good thing about the acrylic paint is that if you mess up it is easy to wipe it off with a wet paper towel and start over.

I would also recommend painting the "kill stripes" on the back of the boot blue, like the original Kenneth Coles.

Does anyone have a pic of the bottom of the jetpack for painting refrence, I've got almost every angle except the bottom. Looks like dark blue and light blue trim.. want to be sure though.

Perfect, not sure why I didn't check the gallery... so used to using google image search. Well I didn't find any of the paint listed (not in complete manufacturer) But I did find paint, just a different manufacturer. Going to start painting today, I'll take pics.

photo-26-.jpgOkay, not actually a costume piece, but I figured I'd share it anyways. I finished the trunk I'm going to use lugging all this stuff around in. Jango Trunk.

Not bad on the tote. Mine is still in a lime green tote with no wheels. I really need to upgrade.

photo-27-.jpgOkay, instead of paying $65 for women's navy blue leather gloves, I found a place near me that supplies off white leather gloves. I got some royal blue dye and presto, it came out okay I think. (What do you guys think?) I spent loads less...

I have 2 extra pair of the Target gloves. If you wanted a pair I would sell you a pair for 20 plus shipping. Probably about 25 or less.

They seem to be out of stock on the large ones. I spent 8 bucks on the ones pictured.

photo-28-.jpg Here's my Rubies Westar 34's. A friend of mine at the Kung Fu School has a metal cutting machine and we are going to try to make full metal ones.. until then, these will suffice.

Or you can leave the bow on the gloves and go for the trendy Mango Fett look... Either way

Looking good on the Jango. Keep it up, man!

Re: Tommy's Jango Fett WIP, Questions and Help me thread.

Okay, just an update. I got some chest armor pieces very inexpensive. I figure that's a piece I can upgrade along the way. Trying to keep the costs down, (even though I got the okay to write off all my costume pieces on my taxes from my accountant). I also upgraded my Westar34's to resin ones. They are more screen accurate than the rubies. I have on order a postal blue jumpsuit, that I will modify for Jango. (at least attempt, apparently I remember how to sew.. I just did a bit for my soft parts for my ghostbusters costume.) I cashed out an investment account that was robbing me more money than making me any, and a portion of that will go to my gauntlets.

The leather bolo belt I'm going to try to make myself. My friend found a cheap spot to get the bolo, and I'm going to pick up a flank of 9oz cowhide and the tools to make it. I might come out with some extras. I'm also going to give a shot at making the holsters myself. I found this informative site:
    Holster Making Tutorial

Here is a pic for the update: img_1043.jpg

photo-29-.jpgThe jumpsuit arrived today! I'll have to modify the sleeves to do the overlap, I'll wait until my gauntlets come in before I mod. I'm happy with the color of the suit, it's postal blue (the photo does not do it justice, it looks very washed in the photo. )

It is tough to see the color in the pic but Jango is always tough to get the color right. If that is the postal blue coveralls, then I would add a small amount of purple dye to it. The postal blue is not far off from the right blue hue. If you get Jango right then in some pics it will look purple and in some pics it will look blue. If you look at my "I stopped by Kamino" thread you can see two pics taken on the same day, and you would swear that it was two different jump suits. And then of course you need a bit of weathering....

You are just about to the point that things should start rolling along, I look forward to seeing your work start to come together.

Re: Tommy's Jango Fett WIP, Questions and Help me thread.

I've got some more pieces on the way, and I'm going to take a pic with the pieces on, this should help align the colors, or what I need to do to align the colors. I've custom made my gloves, and dyed those myself.. I think the color is spot on with those.

This is what I have left to do.
    1. Girth Belt (I'll try to make myself, I'm ordering a full sheet of 9oz cow hide, a ridiculous amount of bolo, I'll buy the tools I need)
    2. Holsters. (Once again, I'll try myself off the same huge sheet of cow hide, I've got some tutorials on how to make holsters)
    3. Knee Armor: Bobamaker or Cruzer perhaps?
    4. Cod Armor
    5. Legs, boot armor
    6. Back Armor
    7. Vest (Going cheap for now with a leather like material, I'll upgrade to a full leather one - either Bobamaker or LSFU as more funds are added)
    8. Voice changer / helmet padding

What do you have in mind for the voice changer and helmet padding?

Not sure for the voice changer. But my 501st pals have been using something you can usually buy off of Amazon dirt cheap. It's got a small amplifier and makes cool "mic" noises when you talk.

you can Get Aker mics from amazon. they arent amazing but do the job. Rom/Fx voice amps are probably the best option though if you don't mind the expense and wait time.

Check out the pic, also while taking a gander at the pic, can I get your feedback on the flight suit color? I kind of like the postal blue, but thought about dying it to match my gloves a bit more.

Woot! Three boxes in the mail today, all filled with the rest of the components to my Jango costume. This weekend I should have a Showoff thread.

Sorry I've been off the site for a bit, lost my Mom and my Dog this year. But good news, my vest came in today from Bobamaker. Now I'm have the task of attaching the armor to it. What does everyone recommend: Velcro or snaps? I'm leaning toward snaps, but paranoid if I'll get it all to line up right.

    Snaps

Just take your time. I used some velcro to get mine into position, then I chalked the outer edges of the armor on the vest, then punched the holes for the snaps.

Also I start at the collar and work my way down with the spacing. That way you start off at a known point and work off of it.

Thanks Mullreel. Someone suggested just using a couple of snaps and velcro so it's hugs the vest also.

Im all for the snaps! My Boba armor is attached with bolt/nuts..which would probably work as well. But may be a bit difficulat to line up. Mine is actually a tad bit off in one spot.

I like the snap and velcro idea.

This is totally my opinion and there is probably an easier and safer way to do this....but....

If you want your armor to really "cling" tightly to you, after affixing the armor/snaps to the vest, I used a heat gun (while wearing it...yikes!) to warp the armor to fit my body better. It is very difficult to get the armor perfectly flush against your body. I am NOT saying you SHOULD use a heat gun, but merely saying this is what I did.

Also try not and glue the snaps too far to the edge of your armor.

    Good luck!

This is also what I did- just do it with someone you trust! I had my father-in-law help me. He trusts me to take care of his daughter, I can trust him with a heat gun next to my body.
