Super Shiny Jango Bucket Progress Pics

I've found a great new product for making things look like chrome without any expensive electrolytic processes. Here's some pics of my buildup. I'm not sure where the helmet originated (I got if off of ebay) so if anyone knows where I can find another one like it, let me know.

These first three photos are of the helmet with a red sandable primer, then a grey primer, then the black basecoat with three coats of clear.

After waiting about 8 days for the clear coat to finish off gassing, I was able to put on the chrome layer. I think this came out pretty good, but there are a few flaws. It turns out that every mistake is visible through this paint.

Seems to work like Alclad II. How well does it hold up to handling? Does it get dull in areas where it's touched?

The next step was masking and painting the blue. I'm using Rustoleum Royal Blue for the light color and Navy Blue for the darker. I'm sure it's not screen accurate, but I like the contrast and the chrome is too bright as it is. It actually looks to be really close with a flash.

The chrome paint that I used is a product called Mirrachrome made by Alsa Corporation.

Here's a link to their page for it:
    http://alsacorp.com/products/mirrach...a_prodinfo.htm

It's a little on the pricey side, but it takes very little to paint one helmet (less than 1/4 ounce) and there's nothing like it anywhere else.

The good part is all you need to apply it is a regular automotive HVLP Spray Gun or a dual action airbrush. I haven't tried it with my little cheapo Testors airbrush, but it would probably work passably well.

The trick to it is that it must be applied over a perfect gloss finish. Every little mistake you make in the prep work will show up in the final product. Here's a pic of a spot on the back where I buffed out a run in the clear coat:

The other nice thing about it is that it's dry within about 30 seconds of coming out of the spray gun. No buffing. No elbow grease. Just wait a few days and clearcoat it with any automotive clear and the finish is just as tough as the paint on a new car.

Anyway, I just wanted to show off my progress so far. I've got a little more to do with rattle cans and then I can weather it a little, put all the bells and whistles inside, and call it done.

Don't forget the visor! And fans! Ahh fans... That paint looks awsome! But RnB is a tad bit cheaper. That really does look great though! Great job dude! What other parts do you have of a Jango costume?

Re: Super Shiny Jango Bucket Progress Pics

I have the visor cut and I tested it for fit before painting. I figured it would be easier to epoxy putty it into place after everything's painted rather than spend time masking it over and over.

I also have a pre-wired cpu fan for ventilation. I hollowed out a channel in the left earpiece so fresh air will be drawn in from the bottom edge of the helmet. I'm not too sure how well this will work (might not be a big enough duct) so I may end up adding some half round tubing on the inside too.

I'm also looking for a football helmet replacement liner so I can have something a little nicer than the weatherstripping I used in my boba helmet. I also coated the inside of my boba helmet with a rubberizing product called Plasti-Dip. It's designed to replace damaged rubber grips on pliers and whatnot. I like the effect and I'll be using it for the interior of this helmet as well. There's not much padding value, but it makes it a little quieter when some idiot taps on the back of your helmet to see if it's really metal.

Lastly, I'm installing a black drawstring neckseal that will velcro in so nobody can look up into the bottom of the helmet.

I'll probably only keep this helmet to display with the rest of my collection, so I doubt I'll spend too much time on any other bells and whistles.

I'm still toying with the idea of making the rest of the jango costume, but it will have to wait until after I finish the boba costume.

Regardless, I'm spraying the other (navy) blue today so I should have more progress photos to post in the next day or so.

With regards to handling the paint, once you apply a clearcoat, it's as tough as the paint on your car. It will show fingerprints and they can be wiped off. If you don't clear coat the chrome paint, you still have to try pretty hard to mar the surface.

The manufacturer recommends that you wipe off excess metallic dust from spraying within minutes after the paint goes on. I was a little nervous about doing this (what paint could possibly be dry in less than five minutes) but it turns out that it works out fine. This stuff is also very pliable. On the company website they showcase leather clothing and upholstery that has been painted with the same stuff. I'm thinking about painting my car with it.

I've painted the other (Navy) blue. I think it might be just a bit too dark and I didn't do such a great job with the masking, so I'll probably be doing some touch up with a brush. Then it's time for another clear coat and final assembly.

I posted a pic of the jet pack in the show off your jet pack thread, but here's the picture again. I think I went a bit overboard on the weathering, but without making it so grungy, the colors just looked too bright.

    Thats a sweet paint job.

Guro (from japan!) has a great chromed trooper helmet. After I saw his I was thinking about using this very product you used to do my own chromed ANH helmet. But I gotta finish my ESB fett helmet first! Wait a minute... what respectable prop enthusiast has only ONE project going at a time!!! sheesh!

    Fortunately I was wearing clothes...

Sorry I haven't updated this in a while. I've just been touching up the blues and fixing a couple of scratches (mostly the scuffed areas on the back). There's no noticeable difference in any of the pictures I've taken lately. I'll be putting the final clearcoat on this one tonight and then final assembly (visor, rf stalk, neckseal, etc.) will be done over the weekend.

Then it goes on the wall with the rest of the collection and I can get back to the jet pack, the EpII Clone helmet, the Deepeyes helmet, the Boba costume details, and brainstorming something new to wear for Halloween. I'm thinking about a raw sculpt of the Republic Commando armor...

    Nice job on the bucket!
Have you finished the pinstriping yet?...

I stand by the rub'n'buff method personally, as its great for re-touching up again anytime and weathering on top off...

The silver RnB has a nice aged metal finish to it too i think...

Here's a metric butt-ton of pics. They should be pretty self explanatory. These include the velcro-in neckseal at the bottom of the helmet.

The fan is mounted inside the left side of the helmet with an on/off switch at the edge so you can reach it without opening the neckseal.

The pinstripes are 1/8" adhesive pinstriping available at any auto supply shop. I didn't feel like rolling the dice by doing the pinstriping by hand.

I mostly feel like I'm done with this one. I may still cover the wiring inside the helmet and black out the epoxy putty I used to hold the fan, switch, and visor in place. I don't think anybody will ever see them though.

    Hey y'all,

I just wanted to show this off too. I painted the whole car with the same chrome paint as my Jango helmet. Once I hang the front bumper back on it I'm considering putting a couple of blue racing stripes on it. Then if I finish the rest of the Jango costume, I'll have a car that matches it.

Maybe I've already taken it too far.

The Miata has seen a bit of a setback. There were a few rough spots on the chrome layer. I went ahead with the clearcoat anyway and caused all sorts of problems. It turns out that I didn't give the chrome enough time to off-gas all of the solvents. So the nice metal layer that had laid flat and looked like chrome ended up moving just enough to look like normal silver paint in a lot of places.

Now I'm going piece by piece and sanding through to the black basecoat, respraying a clearcoat, re-chroming, and then clearcoating after waiting long enough.

It will take me a lot longer, but when it's done it should be perfect. I'd post pictures, but there's nothing to be proud of right now.

I don't have a pattern for the neckseal, but it would be pretty simple to re-create. What you need to do is trace out the outline of your helmet, figure out where you need the neck hole to be, add to the outside edge for the velcro attachment to the helmet, and add to all of the edges for the seams. The drawstring is elastic, so you don't have to worry about strangling yourself with the gasket.

A pattern might not be too useful since the bottom of each helmet is going to be a bit different.

    I hope this is helpful.

Is there anyone who makes those neck seals to sell? I'm pretty interested in one.

    Also, GREAT helmet!!

Silly Question, but why the red primer before the grey? I understand the black as it is better for the chrome paint..

I think the red is a sandable primer.

The red primer was a very thick sandable primer that I put on mostly to fill the little pinholes in the fiberglass helmet before going over it with the expensive automotive (grey) primer. Also, after sanding off the original paintjob, I wanted as many chances as I could get to wet sand and get a nice smooth finish instead of this:[IMG]

In case anyone was still wondering, I had the whole thing put together and I was re-chroming the car panel by panel. I was at the halfway point and still using the car as my daily driver. Unfortunately, I was driving in the rain on my way to the shooting range and someone ended up hitting my front right fender and tearing open the front bumper cover.

The whole thing was a bit upsetting, but it gave me an excuse to tear the entire car apart and repaint all of the pieces that needed it while I was waiting for the replacement parts to ship.

I've been awfully busy lately, but I was in a big rush to get it put back together in time for me to go back to sea. Right now it looks like this:

The next step will be new rims (chrome of course), a bunch of effect lighting (blue) and new carpet and upholstery (blue and black). Then I just need to install the seismic charge launcher in the back end and I'll be all set.

In case anyone without a spray gun and compressor wants to duplicate my super shiny helmet, the folks who made my chrome paint have now figured out how to put it in a spray can:

Daaaang, that's amazing. I'm so jealous. When I was younger I used to tell my Dad that I wanted to drive around in a chromed out car then he went on about blinding people on sunny days into car accidents & police tickets so that was the end of that conversation. Dreams...shot...down...but the dreams were only in a coma, they're coming back!

Oh yeah, I love the helmet even more.

I'm still active here. I check in from time to time, but my Fett costume is on the backburner for a while while I work on other things. I didn't do any weathering on the helmet because I couldn't bring myself to mar what was then my best chrome finish to date.

Since then I've done these guys:

    Then turned them into this:

I work as a commercial mariner, so I spend 4-6 months per year at sea doing my navigator job. The rest of the time I'm on vacation and tinkering in my shop. If you'd like to know more about any of this insanity, check out my myspace profile at http://www.myspace.com/protagonist4hire. I keep project logs and travel journals in my blog there and try to make it all interesting reading.

Those are older style Mk6 Space Marine helmets from Warhammer 40,000. This is the beginning my Halloween costume (and a couple of local friends) for 2008. I also have the rifle built up to go with it:

I'll be starting the other parts after I finish this year's Halloween project. By the time I finish this character, I will go from being my normal 5'8" barefoot to just under seven feet tall in the full rig. Here's another variant of the same sort of character with a different color scheme:

i think tinkering is a bit of an understatement! And to think, I was proud of myself to put a stormtrooper helmet together a few years back! Hope you're still costuming, though this will have appeared to taken alot of your spare time. Wish I had an uncle as cool when I was a kid. Very nice!
