General State of Jango paints FEB 2014

Rustolium: So I spent the better part of my day trying to scavenge for the rustolium Royal Blue at the stores I've been used to buying them at. Well, needless to say, every store I went to did NOT carry it in the spray form, only the can/brushable kind. I went to both lowes, home depot, ACE, and two walmarts. With the exception of buying it online, I feel that what you do find online is what's left in stock for these business and perhaps the last of it. Because of this, I think we need to seek an alternative company's paint to utilize. I have been told that this paint has been discontinued!

Krylon: Krylon Short Cuts Ocean Blue has been a common standard for the mandibles/ helmet's wrap around. While at first, this paint was decent, Krylon decided to FUBAR the formulas, and IMHO, completely ruining the paint. The quality went from great to craptastic almost overnight, it seemed. My last Jango helmet commission took me several months because of this paint not spraying down smooth at all, instead bubbling every time. But did you try more than one can? Yes, I bought multiple cans, 2 of which from separate ACE hardwares and another from an online store. They ALL had this problem, therefore, it is to me, no longer a viable option to use, unless you love to paint and sand, repeat!

Alternatives?

So far, the only alternative paint has been the Model Master's French Blue, as used by BKBT, in place for the Krylon Short Cuts Ocean Blue. I personally used this paint this past week, and without any issues...First time use and it went down perfectly. Dried very quickly and accepted a gloss coat as well (same brand though). I know they sell this in both the small jar form and the spray can form. So if you want worry-free paint, go with the model masters!

Alternative for the royal blue? I'll need to search. I did find one can leftover in a prop storage I had. I sprayed it on some pieces, despite my testing of it showing it was still good, the rustolium became spotty, so I'll need to sand and start over. My 2nd issue with the royal blue is it's finicky nature. Having worked so much with it, rustolium in general can be very tricky to work with compared to other paints, so even after all my experience using it, I can't help but hope that it's not going to screw up! No other paint that I saw came close to it's color, since it's almost a greenish-blue hue. Though, i will start doing some color matching to see if I can find an alternative brand...

Thanks...

Hey Chris I'll post up the paint formulas I used on my last helmet. I know that most people paint the cheek color a darker blue but some of the toys I have seen & the C II costume reference pics definitely show a green undertone to it. I also like what Sideshow has used for their bust so I tied to match up to this somewhat.

I couldn't find the paints up here in Canada so I could never see if I liked them in person or not. Alternatives in a spray can format proved frustrating so I opted for bottled paints that I mixed myself. Please note that these are approximations in the measurements as I am one of those cooks that never uses a measuring spoon or cup.

Light Blue:
Model Master French Blue 65%
Model Master Blue Angel 25%
Model Master Classic White 10% to lighten it up a bit

Dark Blue:
Testors 1171 FL Beret Green 40%
Testors 1111 GL Dark Blue 40%
Testors 1172 FL Sea Blue 15%
Classic White 5% to lighten it up a bit Jango colors 001.jpg

Oh and the helmet in my avatar is my old helmet & not painted with this mixture. I'll post a side by side comparison of the two helmets so you can see the color changes.

Those colors look good to my eye BKBT. That is the bad part about relying on spray cans. At some point they will either discontinue the color or change the formula, and at some point they are going to all get away from any solvent based paint entirely.

I tried to factor in as much info as possible when I made my final decision. I looked at the reference pics (not the movie stills or production stills unless the lighting was neutral), the available toys (which vary wildly) & the RAL colors mentioned in another thread. I searched the RAL colors online & again the color charts varied depending on which website I went to & I couldn't find a local paint supplied with these charts. So I compiled al of this info, settled on the common colors that appeared & that is what I came up with.

Never having seen the costume in person, that is my interpretation & I am satisfied with the result.

Thanks Vince for that. It's definitely a skill that needs to be developed for mixing the paints. I've always been a spray-paint guy and I don't think I can completely change that. That's not to say that I am not going to learn new methodologies, such as the use of automotive/airbrush paints. I have been looking into acquiring the proper equipment for this applications, although I personally won't be taking action until after March.

I think though, that we can utilize your paint mix ratios for that end of the aisle (it's something for me to try and use as an example and a test for mixing paints to learn and probably develop)

As for everyone else, on the other hand, for the benefit of those who do not necessarily need to purchase specific equipment for these paints, hence, more "casual" painters, I think the need to discover off the shelf sprays to be more in line with the community's needs. My builds were strictly off the royal blue/krylon paints, and at the time of course, I didn't feel the need to change colors. Well, this is the time, not just for myself, but anyone who desires to build a Jango now or in the future.

Also, what are the "Official" RAL color codes for the paints??? I keep finding 2 sets of numbers here and there
One set is RAL 5015(visor) and RAL 5007/5009
and the other set is RAL 5015 (Visor) and RAL 5000/5001(Cheeks)

Both posts stating these are from 2011 within 2 months of eachother...

Also, further looking, it seems Humbrol has expanded their line of "Blue" paints since that conversion chart was last updated. They now make a Azure blue that looks to match the RAL 5009/5007 color --> The Official Humbrol Website - 157 Azure Blue Matt - 14ml Enamel Paint.
And this one (PRU Blue ---> The Official Humbrol Website - 230 PRU Blue Matt - 14ml Enamel Paint) looks like a nice possible match for the cheeks. Another thing to keep in mind is that sadly, everyone see's colors slightly different from one another (and thats not even counting how much your monitor is distorting the colors.

Let's keep in mind that there are no "official" colors. Everything we have to date is someone's interpretation of what they have seen, unless there is photographic evidence showing color cards against the real costume.

Not seeing the two side by side in person I can't see how close the match is. It looks off in the pic but that is probably due to the different sheen of the helmet & the added weathering. Dark-Side's post also states he mixed RAL 5000 & RAL 5001 but in what ratios? Again, we are going back to personal perception of the color.
Not trying to be argumentative but just illustrating that the best we have to go off right now is personal interpretation. I would say that this is as close as anyone has gotten to a true color.

Oh I'm not trying to be argumentative at all; sorry if it came off that way. You guys have far more years in Jango than I do. I just saw all these RAL colors being thrown around and wasn't sure if they were taken as scripture or not. As for DS's mixture, hopefully he can weigh in more on it, but I think I saw somewhere else that it was 50/50

It would be great if we could nail down the colors like the Boba guys have. Again, I think this is close as the mixture of RAL 500 & 5001 has that green hue that I see anyway.

I have to agree. If there's one real lesson I learned from painting the jango lids is that lighting is EVERYTHING. I cannot tell you how much different paint colors can look in completely different lighting...it's almost mind boggling sometimes. It is unfortunate that we don't have the same level of knowledge on the Jango as we do for Boba's, what, how many costume variants? Granted, it's been around much longer, so hopefully down the road, we'll get more information. At the very least, we have been able to acquire castings off the real deal, which is a huge plus considering (no knocking replicas!!)

Anyways, I'll show you what I mean. While it's great that Darkside was able to get close to the real helmet and do a side by side, the conditions that Vince pointed out are going to throw you off. Here are two examples:

These are two pics of the same exact helmet I painted for a client quite a few years ago:

The most obvious difference is the color of the mandibles/visor area...it looks much lighter/more aqua green then in the pic of me wearing it. I can't say the owner was using flash in the photo (more than likely not because of no flash glare off the glass case) but obviously much different lighting conditions then when I took it. You can see very similar results from photos of the real helmet. It's one of the reasons why we used the Krylon ocean blue, as it appeared very close to the true color not only in natural lighting, but also in brighter lighting/flash photography which mimicked the real helmet

Just another add it, but something else to consider (not jango related, but relevant). I was explaining why I believe OD Green is most accurate for a Halo 3 Masterchief. I noticed in the game, depending on the lighting conditions, the armor clearly looked a dark green and in others, clearly a brown color.

For this, I took two photos, in the same location, of a MK6 Handplate. Both photos are of the exact same handplate. If this isn't obvious, I don't know what is

BKBT, I know -- even though there was a couple-decade lag -- once folks started hunting down the original Boba colors, it was only a matter of months to maybe a bit over a year to nail everything to a high degree of probability. While I wouldn't put it past the costumers to have custom-mixed the paint for Jango's bucket. Most of the costumes in the Prequels, versus the Original Trilogy, seem to carry a subtext of "try and pull this one off, costumers!" Everything from the Kenneth Cole and Prada boots for Jango and Zam to the custom -- and complicated -- dye jobs for Amidala and her Haindmaidens to the century-old Italian lace used for Padme's bridal veil to... You get the point. *sigh*

I'm probably going to use your recipe for the darker blue, as I prefer airbrush to rattlecan. For the Ocean Blue... There's a technique you can use for that, too. Spray a lot of the paint into a cup, let the propellant sublimate out for a few minutes, then it can be used to brush or sponge on, or mix with thinner to use in an airbrush.

Chris I really like how your helmet photographed in the case & that is pretty much the look that I was going for. I'll try to take better pics tomorrow of my helmets in natural light to show the color differences.

Ok, on to the helmet pics. The first pic is the Sideshow Jango & the colors I was trying to achieve. This is one of the many pics that I used. The second pic is my helmet with the colors from the color chart I posted earlier. The last pic is comparing the colors to my old helmet. The changes I made were to lighten up the visor & go for more of a sky blue. The cheeks have that slight greenish hue to them in certain lighting, rather than being all blue.

Those colors look good. I think the most important part of the Jango helmet colors it the relation between the two blues. I think there is some wiggle room on the actual colors they just have to play off of each other just right.
