Excelent ! check out the brown. :love
Nice Googeling Foxbat ! :thumbsup
NICE FIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
I think the "red brown" is the right color...
osk
Way to go FBK! Nice find!
Wes
Originally I would've gone with natural then dyed it myself but now that I take another look, the red-brown does look pretty good.
FREAKIN AWESOME!!!
Thanks to JD who helped me on my googling by sending me a link to something that gave me a lead on what to search for.
...and all the people who hand-braided their belts go.... "OH ****!"
NICE FIND MAN!!! I dont think it gets ANY better or more accurate than that! I think perhaps this thread should be stickied or merged into the already stickied belt thread.
The real deal.

The braided rope.

Any difference? I cant see much of a difference, besides maybe the lighting, they are pretty much exactly the same. Nice find!
Major find! Chalk one up for the Jango!
I just bookmarked the site...Thanks!
Sweet!!!
That's fantastic. Great find.:jango:thumbsup
So, 6MM or 3MM?
6mm.
Awesome find, Foxbatkllr.
What do you all think of Antique Dark Brown? That one looks
more accurate to me than the Red Brown? Any thoughts?
Three cheers for Foxbatkllr
Hip..hip..horraaayyyyy!!!!!
Definitely antique dark brown. Awesome find there!!! KUDOS!
Thanks...but the Antique Dark Brown isn't available in 6mm...so its worthless...
The only two colors available in 6mm (1/4") is the Natural and Red-Brown.
Sweet!! good find.
Now, how much do we need?
Well your average Jango will probably need a yard per braid so 19 yards?
I emailed them to see if it would be possible to get it in 6MM. So lets keep our fingers crossed.:D
I wonder if we could redye it too.
Well if you get it "natural" you can dye it whatever color you want.
I would use a leather dye, if you try that.Quote:

Oh yeah, but I am wondering if they are coated or sealed or anything to interfere with the dye uptake.
or, you could just buy some leather "binding" and plait it yourself. It looks like a standard "4 plait". It's dead easy to do.
Yeah, but for those people who don't have the patience or time...this is a good alternative.
eeeeeeeeyup, a good expensive alternative.
How many yards do you reckon would be needed for one belt??
The dark brown is 2 dollars cheaper per yard than the undyied? hmm that is wierd, need about 20 yards aout 80 bucks, I would definitly get that if I where doing a Jango.
Well, they got back to me and asked me how much I wanted. I told them about 19 or 20 yards. Still waiting on a reply to see if it will be posable to order it like this. i will keep you all informed.:D
How much depends on how big around you are. I would figure on 18-20 braids.
The metallic gold or bronze would be perfect for that
"screen accurate" Mango Fett costume! :lol
http://images.mjtrim.com/tsconfig/15...lt=75&cvt=jpeg
dsd :jango
:lol I thought that would be perfect for Mango.
Well,
they emailed me today and the minimum order on the 6MM ANTQ. DK. BROWN is 1000 yards. So I guess we are out of luck on that unless we want to go in together and do a bulk purchase. But we would need 50 people to buy 20 yards a piece for that to work. So i guess red brown will work just fine for now.:D
has anyone done this one yet? i have a leather braided belt but am looking at doing one myself. any thoughts?
kevin
Right on! I may finish my Jango before the world ends, lol. :D
Ayone order some of this braided leather? I'm thinking of getting some and want to know what those who have it, think of it.
Been following this thread too and would be interested to know if anyone has an opinion on the stuff in hand....
Tambo LMK if you think about ordering some ;)
-Joey
Yes I think I'm going to order a spool...want to go in with me and split it Joey?Quote:

Sure, but i'm wondering if you fix your belt pouches like Seeker did to keep the two belts together, then how much of this do you really need??? I mean if your belts are connected and not moving up and down, then half of the braided belt is never seen.... get what i'm sayin???
Yeah I'll pile in on an order with ya
-Joey
I'm no Jango SME (Subject Matter Expert) :lol but the red brown looks good and would probably come out more screen accurate if you ran it through some sandwiched fine grain sandpaper. Just a thought.
Nope, you are absolutely right on that Jodo.
I have a question for you short Jangos out there. Do you have the full 18-20 rows of braided leather on your belts or did you make yours with less? Reason I'm asking is that I am going to probably buy some from that site but in calculating how much I need, I'm thinking 20 rows will look too wide on me since I'm 5'2". It might cover practically my whole lower torso.
-Natasha
Anyone????
I would scale it down so it looks right for your frame. Same thing goes for the ammo belt. A 3" pouch might look better for your height so make a paper template mockup & see if you like the results.
Yeah, I would agree. I think I currently have 20 braids but need to take a few off. And have had to scale my pouches down some too. Paper mock ups for the pouches are helpful.
What backs these braids as they go around your waist? I know what the back looks like but is there anything behind them the rest of the way? Or are the braids glued to each other?
thanks
dan
I used a piece of leather and glued the braids to that.
That braided rope in the picture above at the mjtrim website is only 3mm wide. That's barely an eighth of an inch. Did anyone actually buy this stuff? I'm asking cuz I'm gearing up to making one.
Check again...they also have it available in 6mm...which is what you want.
Oh duh. One of the links took me to the antique dark brown, which was only available in 3mm. Red Brown is available in 6mm and looks like the closest match. Thanks, Fox. I still remember meeting you at the Comic Con. That was cool. I'll be wearing my Jango at the CIII. I can't believe how far back some of these threads go. I'm a good two years behind! :doh
What can I glue the braides on? Another leather slab to fit my waist? Also - -what sort of adhesive would you recommend for this?
ugh, i bought some 1/8" leather lace at Michaels and my braids are coming out thick and not like in the reference pics. I have the correct weave but just too thick. Did anyone else do this? Looks like I may spend more money to buy some of that mjtrim stuff if my wife doesn't first kill me. :doh
I actually gave away the best place the get them. They were already braided and were actually leather. It was an indian supply place. I don't remember the link but it might still be in one of my old posts. I could probabily find the invoice if someone really wants them.
To my knowledge, there is no store bought lace that is accurate. You can buy the lace cutting tool and scrap leather and cut your own lace as described in the official braided belt thread on page 4 or you can buy from the source I gave at the top of this thread.
Bobafett669, the braids you linked to when you "revealed" your source were inaccurate. The braids were too small and I even think they were incorrectly braided. I think the ones you bought were 6-ply when you need 4-ply and each braid should be 1/4" or 6mm.
Well, I finally ordered some of the red-brown. I'll post what I think of it, when it arrives. http://www.forums.thedentedhelmet.co...ie_thumbup.gif
That's cool, dwedd. I'm getting ready to buy some, too.
are you guys just buying the 25 yard deal??
dan
i guess this is the only way to get a braided belt these days.....
That's what I was planning on doing, OPPI. But if I calcualte it out and there are are only about 20 rows on the belt, that's about 18 or 19 yards for me, being a 32" waist at 6' tall. I may do 21 rows, not sure. So you only save a few bucks, but a few bucks is a few bucks.
So I took the plunge and ordered a roll (25 yards) of red brown. It should be here Monday and y leather worker is working on the belt and holsters. The pouches look pretty dang cool. I can't wait to bring them home and "weather them". I'll likely use my brown and black acrylics.
I read somewhere what some of you have used to keep the pouch belt from sagging down from the braided belt. Anyone else have a problem or is this even a real problem? Just want to plan ahead before I pick the belts up.
I just glued my two belts together on the part where you can't see them and it all works out nicely. Show us some pics of your belts when you get them all done, and goodluck!Quote:

Well, I called up mjtrim and they hadn't even shipped it yet and I ordered it last week. They are out of redbrown braids and I pitched a fit. I told them they should have called me to let me know since I ordered it express. Needless to say they are shipping the natural braid to me overnight and I'll dye it myself.
Dwedd. I haven't seen you post. Did you get yours okay? If not, now you know why. Alright, now to go blast some jedi scum and blow up some things. >:
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience, Skalen...hopefully others don't have the same problems with them as you did.
Mine arrived last week. I must have gotten the last of their red-brown. http://www.forums.thedentedhelmet.co...lie_tongue.gif
I'm not sure why they call it red-brown, cause it's a perfect Jango shade of dark brown. It doesn't even have a hint of reddish color in it. Compared to Seeker's, this braid is tighter. It is 1/4" in dia. and 6 ply. It's not perfectly screen accurate, but will work very well, as far as I'm concerned.
6 ply? It looks like 4 ply in the pictures! :doh
It does look like 4 ply in the pics, but what I recieved is definatly 6 ply.
So about a half hour after I spoke with the gal at mjtrim, she calls me back up and tells me they just got a shipment and red brown is in. So she is supposedly overnighting to me so my next post this evening will be to announce that it finally came. I got a leather worker waiting on me. 6 ply, eh, judz? Post some pics when you finish. Alrighty, I'm off to work.
It came this morning. Whew.
6 ply, or 4? Pics, people! :)
If you scroll up to post #8 on this thread that's exactly what it looks like. Really. Anyway, as soon as my leather guy is done, I can post pics. Right now, I'm working on my jumpsuit and rub n buffing my armor. Gotta get it all velcroed up and stuff. I'm shooting for the end of March to have my Jango done. Finally. After a year and about 4 or 5 months.
Hey All,
I've been out of the action for about 6-8 months now and just wanted to drop in and say hello to anyone who remembers me! :)
Also... Judz Dwedd, was it mjtrim.com that you ordered your braids from? I've been waiting to hear how their product is, and it sounds like you're happy with what you got. I might just order 25 yards of that red-brown myself if it meets your standards!
My Jango was temporarily (and harshly) shelved when my girlfriend and I bought a house last year. Rennovations took over my life, then I was laid off from my marketing job at Playboy after 3 years. Now the house is complete, I'm working full-time for the Internet company I started 7 years ago, and I'm trying (trying!) to get back to my beloved Jango.
If all goes well, I'll be a TDH regular again before long. There's so much to catch up on around here! Can anyone spare me the agony and summarize new developments and major news of the past 6 months? :)
Joren Fett
I forgot to mention that the braids were awesome. You won't regret it Joren.
6-ply? That's a bit of a disappointment...It looks like 4-ply in the pictures...sorry about that...oh well it still is a very good alternative to braiding it by hand...if I had the money I would go back and purchase this stuff from mjtrim...hand braiding is such a pain in the butt!
Yes, my braids came from mjtrim. I agree, the pics look like a four strand braid. Maybe they changed suppliers, and never changed the pic. I doubt they ever expected anyone as picky as us. I don't regret getting them. I can't say as I've ever seen anything else available as a better alternative.
agreed dwedd. Very, very nice braids, even for 6 strands. I got the 25 yard roll.
Okay, I'm convinced.
Just to confirm details... should I be ordering
the 25 yard roll, red brown, 6mm braid?
Thanks all!
Joren Fett
That is correct, Joren. What is your waist size? Your pant size may not reflect your actual waist size! So if you figure your waist size is no larger that about 36 inches, then the 25 yard roll should be right. I'm a size 32 waist but when I measured my waist with my jumpsuit on already tailored, with my dwedd codpiece (and the leather belt which the braids will be glued to) accounted for it came to about 36 inches, which is one yard. The 6mm braid equals approximately 1/4 inch so depending on your size you shouldn't need 25 rows. You don't want to run out of material either. Do the math before placing your final order.
Thanks Skalen Fehl!
I'm normally a 31/32 waist, but I'll take the "suit bulk" into consideration. :)
Joren Fett
Also, keep in mind you might be overlapping the belt in the back which would add about two inches, depending on how you are building it.
I ordered a 25yd roll. I got it in 4 days. Very nice. Now I gotta figure out how to build it. So many choices.
I cut about 24 lengths of the braid and took it to my leatherworker. I think he ended up using only about 20 or 21. I fashioned a loop out of a 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe, cut in half with the radial curves angled downward and glued the thing to a piece of sintra angled just like the reference CD and took it to my leatherworker as well for the center strap with D rings. I had him chicago screw the braided belt to the JD codpiece and it's almost all done. He just needs to attach straps to the holsters. Man he's done an amazing job. I printed about fifteen reference pics from the CD for him to refer to. I can't wait to put the belts on. He says this has been a most interesting project for him. He is so used to building horse saddles and other "normal" leather products.
Guys!! Where are all the pics? Everyone is ordering these braids and no one is posting pics of their belts! Get to work boys (and girls). OSK
My leather belts and holsters should be done Wednesday. I'll try to have pics up by this weekend. I actually am so close I want to wait until it's all done to unveil my year-and-then-some long effort costume.
Besides that, I have yet to see it all together at one time on me. Right now there are pieces everywhere.
Roger that sir.Quote:

I will sew all the ends and run some heavy brown nylon thread through all of the strands every 6 inches or so to keep it together. If all goes well I won't need to add the heavy leather backing to it.
I already bought a cow shoulder that was just long enough and about 6.5" wide throughout just in case I have to go that route.
I'll post when it's done, and we'll see what I end up doin by then.
Wish me luck.
:jango
Here's my finished belt. I ran nylon thread through the entire braid every 3 inches. This keeps them all together without the need for a leather backing. For weathering, I will run over the whole thing with some heavy grit sandpaper as soon as I get some.
Nice job, bud! Boy I bet that mjtrim website wondered what all the hub-bub was about with a surge of orders for that style of braid. LOL. I'll post some pics of my belts tomorrow. Got a ton of stuff to do to get ready for CIII. Ugh...
:? I don't know if I missed it in some thread, but can anybody tell me how many breads the original Jango belt has? It's hard to count, because in all pics I have there's always the belt, the pouches or something covering it partially, so I can't be sure.
By the way, is it still possible to get that Jango Referance CD somewhere? I really could need some accurate material from head to toe. I read a couple of times about it and noticed the offered Boba and Trooper CDs on TDH, but no Jango. :cry
Wasp, I can make a copy for you. I can't remember who I originally got mine from, but you can send me a self addressed stamped envelope I can get you one. Include a blank CDR or RW. I'll pm you with my address.
I'll be taking pictures of my belt this weekend to share. Sorry taking so long obi_sean_kenobi.
Finally got a bunch of pics ready. Here are some shots of my braided belt.

I finnaly ordered my 25 Yard roll today and am getting ready to build this darn thing and be done with it.
****!! $127.00 for a 25 yard roll????!! Is this what everyone has been paying?
I guess I waited too long to order it huh? ;)
Obviously I am taking my time with this costume :)
1st off - You guys do some awesome work.
/noob=on
How many "rows" for the Jango braid belt?
/noob=off
:D
I don't recall it being that much when I checked it out. I never ordered any either. I don't think I wil either. :dohQuote:

I think the red brown is what I used. I believe mine has twenty one rows but I was looking more at the belt being between 5 and 5 1/2 inches wide. I gotta get my costume out of the bin and on a mannequin!
