    Rubies Helmet Review

    Hey folks,
I'll be posting shortly the pics and shoutouts for COMIC-CON! Man it was a blast... I'm still trying to convince myself that I am not, indeed, Boba Fett. It's hard, but I'm making progress...

I'm standing there in a booth (in costume) and I see a wall of star wars helmets. I didn't want to take the helmet off, so I'm just touching the helmets and trying to get a good look at them. I ask one of the exhibitors if those are Don Post or Rubies. He said they're Rubies. I asked him if they used the same molds or rehashed the same old ****** 97 molds and sort of dropped a few opinions about rubies quality at the same time. WEEEELLL... guess who's booth I was standing in? lol... yup, it was the Rubies booth lol

Well I came back later without the costume and got to check the helmets.

Jango: correct 'closed' ear piece. Visor extends a little further towards the bottom but is still not 'full'. The helmet is very elongated, not 'circular'. Sort of snoutlike...

Boba: Same shape as Jango, very snoutlike and poor quality.

Royal Guard: Thinner, lighter, brighter color. The mold appears to be very, uh, well-defined. Meaning the edges are hard and very 'chiseled' whereas the DP ones were more fluid and rounded. It was only $45 and the fetts were around $60

Biker Scout: Looked good, I didn't notice any difference between it and the old DP's, but that point would be better answered by our resident scouts...

All in all, find yourself another source for Fett helmets, or try and reshape these...

the material used on the rubbies seems to be the same as the 97 dp, although it is a little more roomier than my 97 dp. the mold is almost the same i can see on the rubbies where the dp logo was.

Yes, I also thought the materials were very similar.

Where the 97's were short from front/back and very wide, these rubies helmets are very LONG front/back and nearly vertical on the sides.

It's sad that they worried about the relatively obscure detail of the closed ear piece on Jango and completely ignored the visor and correct shape.

    Very sad,

So the visor is not a full clear visor? Is it just a part and the rest painted like the DP ones?

Exactly the same. Only difference was that the Jango appeared to come down a little further. The Boba ends about a half-inch down, the Jango might go as far as halfway.

I didn't think to look at the boba to see if the new Rubies ones come down further than they used to though. It was definitely still part vinyl though.

    Hey JMP,

Yep...you pretty much hit the nail on the head when describing the helmets. I didn't look too close at the biker scout or royal guard but the Fetts looked very similar to DP's helmets to me; I don't know all the small details of the DP's by memory very well, but I kept thinking to myself "Are those were DP's or Rubies?".
I think my favorite helmet they had was the clone trooper. I don't know about accuraccy, but it looked good and seemed solid.

    Take care,

Yeah, the clone helmet seemed nice too. Much better than the kellogg's one. But I think it too was elongated front/back.

Actually it is not half bad(if left in box, never taken out or worn and left in a closet) i ordered a helmet and when i found out it was a rubies i cancelled the order. but i recieved it last week. it is ok, but i would rather have a dp97 if that says anything about it

Lemme tell you all something....I pre-ordered this from entertainment earth back in april cause it looked pretty good and i saw it at C2 from a distance and it looked ok. Everyone here has pretty much bashed it...but i let my order ride thinking maybe it will work with a re paint. I got it in the mail today!!!!
    AND :puke

Well there you have my opinion....
I LIKE MY DP97 BOBA SHAPE BETTER-----I should have listened to the friends here and cancelled my order, do yourselves a favor and look at it in a store if you like but dont order it without having it in your hands once...

Take this from someone who though it might be ok and put that 50-70 dollars in a piggy bank and add to it later for a FG recast if you can find one somewhere....

I just bought a Fett helmet on Ebay thinking it was the '96 DP. Well, I just got it in the mail yesterday and I was really excited. I opened the box and to my horror, it was a '96 Rubies!!!! I spent $60 on a Rubies!!! I was so angry, I chucked the helmet across the room. No damage so its going back up on Ebay. I LOVE my warped visor-less '97 DP compared to this. The helmet is made of VERY soft rubber, It is incredibly small, the paint job is so bad it almot made me puke, and the rangefinder and earpiece are made of thin black plastic!!! Other than that is a good helmet. :puke

    Rubies **** helmets

Well, I can't say I'm too excited about the Rubies Jango helmet I am waiting for. I absolutely figured that it would need a complete overhaul but doesn't even sound worth that. Not exactly sure why they just can't seem to get someone employed in those companies that knew the product they were making?? I wonder if Master Replicas is only going to stick to lightsabers or broaden their horizon with some dead-on helmets!!!!! I WON'T HOLD MY BREATH, but its a nice thought... With the wait everyone is going through on the saber delays, it might be the year 2010 before we see any developments!

I guess it depends on how close to perfection you want. I have one of the rubies and it is alright. If you look at some the pictures of the custom helmets on this sight they kinda blow it away.

    Re: Rubies Helmet Review

I was there at Comic-Con also. I talked with the rep from Rubies. He said that the most of the molds are from DP. He said that the Jango was a new sculpt. I could tell, becuase it looked well different. I will leave it at that.

The jango was definately longer from back to front. A bit bigger all around, but not much taller. The Boba Fett looked exactly like a DP 97. All in all, they are certainly a good starting point. With a new paint job, new visor they wouldn't be half bad. Certaily not a nice and accurate as some of the Fiberglass helmets floating around, but not everyone has that kinda cash to drop.

Also, I thought the Clonetrooper helmet was nice. I like the looks of it 10 times more than the Kellogs helmet. It was made of the somewhat soft vinyl, but again, a great starting point.

Well, that is my .02 cents.

    Re: Rubies Helmet Review

So what is this JF helmet that entertainment earth sent? I've had mine on pre-ordered since May and it's been saying "comming soon" for month. I've checked on the status just about everyday and the only thing that changes is the release date. Then I heard that Rubies made different version and the versions that everyone is getting now is NOT the "collectors edition" (CE) of it. That the CE version is much better. This is only what I heard and I tend to somewhat believe it since I haven't gotten mine in and mine was set to be the CE version. Can anyone FINALLY verify this for me? And maybe explaing why EA has had it as comming soon for months and some pleople are getting it.

mine was the collectors version, the most expensive one, i had ordered it from entertainment earth back in april just after C2. trust me you can read my other post above, cancell the order, they are terrible, no pinstripes, dull chrome instead of mirror finish that is shown...partial visor, and the range finder is so loose that it just falls to the down position on its own...uhhhhh

    Hey OPPI!

Could you put up any pics of the helmet you got?

I'd be interested in seeing just how the CE really looks!

    That'd be cool!

    I got the Rubies today.
I got some work to do.
To answer the question, this is the CE one. That guy on ebay that says these are not is going to be in very big trouble from the people that ordered that picture.
Oh, the UPC is the proof that this is the CE. Look at the EE catalog.

I am so glad I cancelled my order. After reading all the negative comments posted here, and on the advice of someone on this site, I decided to cancel my order. A friend told me I'd be sorry and tried to talk me out of cancelling. Well he got his Rubies Jango helmet this past weekend and guess who's sorry now! What a piece of junk! So, while he's out almost $80.00, I'm putting the money I saved towards a helmet that's worth having!

Thank God for The Dented Helmet!!

I should be getting my helmet in a few days. I think it's ok for a temp (like many of you said) But it looks like its going to need a whole new paint job. I had a question about the blue area. Most of the pictures I've seen look teal. Is the blue ok looking? Is it still 2 shades? I too would like to try to make the dome a bit flatter. Any ideas on how you are going to do this, scarbrs? I'm thinking or putting it in my car on a hot summer day and let the helmet get a bit soft and then flatten it a bit. Maybe I'll buy a new kit later but I have spend far too much money on my costume for that now.

Hair Drier set to high should help flaten it.
    then tape it down maybe.

Well, I did some or my Photoshop magic in the computer and took the helmet picture that scarbrs provided and placed it over the real Jango Fett. The only modification I did was stretched the helmet horizontally (just a bit) and it looks VERY close to the shape of the real helmet. I can't say the same about the paint job but it seems like its a good "cheap" alternative. All you have to do is stretch it a bit instead of lowering the dome alone. I dont have anything to upload the picture in for you to see but feel free to email me and I will send you a pic of my modification picture ASAP.

All I did was messed with the contras. I still think, from the looks of the pic, that the whole thing needs a paint job. Plus, you'd want the helmet silver to match the entire armor.

Yea im going to paint it then use the same sliver to paintthe armor.
What type of paint should i use. I was at Wal-mart and the Plasti-cote has a silver crome arcylic enamel.
You think that if i heat it up i can strech it?

    Re: Rubies Helmet Review

The best paint I found so far is Rust-Oleum Silver. There is a "premium" version of this that I've not yet tested. I've tested about 7 different brands so far and this is the best so far. I haven't painted any of my armor yet. I want to test a small part of the inside of the helmet to see if the same paint will hold up against it. The Krylon was also a good choice but I've tried 3 different Krylons and they all seem to have the same slight "glitter" effect. The Rust-Oleum looks great when adding the Silver Leaf Rub-n-Buff.

As far as the stretching, I think it might work. People have done that with the Don Post Boba Fett helmet. The placed it in the car on a hot day and let the plastic get a bit soft. Then stuff the inside with towels or newspaper to hold the desired shape and let it cool like that. They said "do NOT put it in the oven". Please becarefull when doing this. I'm going to stuff my helmet with towels and then blow dry it 1st. Just to play it safe. I don't want my helmet all warped and funck looking when I get back in the car.

    Gino

P.S. Eric, you should have a better pic of the Rubies helmet on JF as a side-by-side comparison of the original helmet. Please see if you can post that instead.

I think the main problem with the Rubies helmet is the SIZE. The shape is off, sure but that’s no big deal. If they just made it a bit bigger they would have a winner on their hands. But if you are under 5.5 tall, this thing should be fantastic. And for the price, well, it can't be beat. Looks like it is going to put some people who sell DP re-casts for $200 out of business!

Now, a fully custom fiber glass one ... now THAT"S worth the money! I love mine.

Actually, the range finder stalk isn't as thick as it looks on the picture. I did the picture modification and I was a bit lazy and did a ****** job of cropping the picture out. The range finder stalk seems to be ok. As far as the size of the whole helmet, it does appear like it could be a bit bigger.

I just got my helmet from Entertainment Earth and was fairly happy with what I got. However, there is alot of work to be done. I'm going to stretch the helmet a BIT wider, replace the visor and repaint the whole thing. Anyone have any pointers? Also, please post pictures of your modified helmet and what you did to give all of us good pointers.

    Thanks
    Gino

P.S. Anyone know of any good place that I could find material to replace the visor? SMaybe a store that just about every state would have and not some "mom and pop" plastic store in your neck of the woods. Maybe tell me what the material is called and I could look it up on www.smartpages.com

For a visor go to Menards or Home Depot and pick up a face sheild. Menards is cheaper. Then go to Walmart and get car window tint put them togther after you cut it to shape.
I haven't worked on mine yet but thats what i got.

How you going to streach it? I mean the heats not a problem but to get it to stay might be?

I think he is refering to the streching of the helmet to make it wider so that it has a better flair to it.

I have heard that putting the helmet in your car for awhile on a good hot day to heat up evenly so you can make your mods and correct any factory warpage then cooling it down quickley with water to keep its shape.

Yeah. I was talking about addind a flare. The pictures seemed to look longer or taller. But now that I've actually took a good look at it, I don't think I'll need to do that. Has anyone tried just adding the Rub N Buff without repainting it? Seems to me that the color is pretty close to the armor color I've done some test painting with. It's just that It doesn't have any shine or gloss to it.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. This might sound like a dumb question but how do you take out the rangefinder from the Rubies helmet? I'm just afraid that I might break it. Is there a trick or some good pointers?

JFC, I asked the same rub n buff question a few weeks ago. Some said give it a shot and I think it was seeker who said he put r&b on his knee armor and it never fully dried. The store that has r&b by my house has been sold out for 2 weeks so I have yet to try it.
I like the rangefinder question, I was curious about it myself. Does anyone know?

Don't worry about it rubbing off. The spray paint on my thigh pieces would always wear off like crazy from my holster straps. Not that I have it RNB'd, it doesn't come off anymore!

I got my Rubies Jango helmet today, and it isn't as bad as I was expecting. But it would take alot of work to make it look good. Luckily, I have gotten my hands on a much better helmet that is currently being "Jangofied".

I may sacrifice my Rubies one to the mod gods just to see what they can do with it. If you are of a smaller build, the helmet would probably work okay.

Yeah.. anyone try taking the range finder apart? Another pointer that some might be interested in. I sprayed some Rustoleum Clear coat enamel spray on the silver part of one of the cheeks and it looks pretty good. It actually looks like a shiny silver. I think I'm going to do that for the whole silver part. I've bought some Rustoleum blues for the rest. They are "Painter's Touch". Has anyone tried these paints yet? I did a little part of the back of the helmet to test and it just seemed to bead up. I guess I should have sanded and primed it 1st, duh. But I wanted to test it 1st just for $hits and giggles. Has anyone worked with this paint before? Cuz I read in their site that they are "oil based paints". Any other suggestions? I might try again after the sanding and prime it. But I did read that some people were using "brilliant blue" and "deep blue" by Rustoleum. These are the colors I have bought and was wondering if they were the same "Painter's Touch" that everyone else has been using.

Keep the Rubies tips comming guys.

    Gino

P.S. I think I'll use the clear coat on my whole armor as well. I don't think I'll be using the Ru N Buff on my Rustoleum silver since it's been rubbing off on a test piece I did over a month ago. That and it leaves lots of finger prints on it when pressed somewhat firmly.

Yep, I used Painter's touch for one of my blues. Painter's Touch brilliant blue for the light, and Krylon regal blue gloss for the dark.

Seems that you and I are about the same size. I'm 5'3". Even though this helmet is not 100% what I want, I think I'll still get one, just so I can complete my costume in time for Halloween (after a little rework). For all of those that ordered one and were upset when it looked NOTHING like the pictures on the web site, have you considered getting together and getting a lawyer to sue them for false advertising? It might finally wake Rubies up to the fact that they produce ****** costume accessories. This seems to me like a fairly clear cut case of "bait and switch", showing a picture of a fantastic looking helmet, calling it a collectors edition, and shipping something that looks this bad.

Instead of R/B has anyone tried Rust-Oleum Clear Coat Laquer...It is really glossy and creates a shell. It is almost like fiberglassing the helmet. Paint the helmet how you want it, I used Rust-Oleum Silver, Painters touch Royal blue for the light part and Wildflower for the dark. After you paint it and it has dried put on the clear coat laquer....Your paint will never come off or dull.

Has anyone else come across that description of the Rubies helmet? They also say Rubies is producing high and low quality versions of the helmet?

Are they referring to the 2 dimensional open-back "mask" as the low quality version? I'm confused.

    Here's what I'm talking about:
    http://www.toynk.com/catalog/jango_f...et_1318914.htm

"Pre-Sale (August/September). The Collector's Edition of the Jango Fett Helmet. Made of high quality, injected plastic. Will fit most adults. PLEASE NOTE - Rubies is producing high-quality and lower-quality versions of this helmet. This is the higher quality version."

I've seen one of these things... they are really cheesy... not worth the money at all... And the store that sells them here has them only with the pajama costume as well...

Most of the masks I saw at our large Halloween store were all crushed in the forehead... (not dented... ) so they aren't high quality at all...

The collectors edition is made much better... Though it's more like a soft plastic latex or something rather than hard thick plastic. In other words, it can bend and is more like rubber...

okay, searching for the right words here... hope it made sense. *L*

In anycase, I'm hoping my home made one turns out at least as good as the collecters and will most likely be better than the delux.

I've only seen it paired with the Deluxe Jango costume. It comes together like the Kellog's Clone Troope helmet. But, if you can imagine this, it looks MUCH worse.

Yeah Unfortunately, before I got on this board I had a local reputable costume store pre-order a Jango deluxe for me. When it got here about a week ago, I took a look at it when the owner handed it to me. Wow, what a disappointment. As mentioned above it comes together in two parts hence the "two piece" designation, but other than that its ****. The hard vinyl Jango helmet looks better IMHO, but the shape is still way off. Im actually starting to sweat since I have a fiberglass helmet I won in a Ebay auction that is being shipped from australia and it's already been nearly three weeks and no helmet!!! I might have to get a Rubies Jango just in case.

Hey! I was quick to judge the rubies "deluxe" version (the 1 piece model) too, but after I sunk $70 on one this week (see above post for rationale) I have to say it really isn't that bad. Its pretty stiff vinyl, it holds its shape, clean paintjob albeit 2 colors and no pinstripes, but overall i think it's actually better than most DP's from 97-98. And I say this only because Ive seen how warped they can get...Plus you can almost get away with the stock paintjob. Most DP's Ive seen have a horrible weathering job on them.

Yeah I think it's BS. There is no such "hard" collectors edition helmet out right now. BTW, If anyone wants a Rubies Jango with the visor area and keyholes already cut out, PM me. I have two helmets and I have to sell one.

(BTW, I had to cannabalize the rangefinder for my other helmet...It shouldnt be to difficult to replace, though it is kind of a strectch what with halloween only 8 days away.)

hahaha, yeah I hope rubies comes out with a "deluxe" edition Zam Wessell. We can look forward to seeing a skin tight pair of ladies jammies with the armor stenciled on.

For crying out loud Rubies! You can vacuform thin styrene chest plates, glue it to a pre-made vinyl vest, vacuform some thigh, shin, and kneepads, give them some elastic bands. Then slap the whole thing onto a thin blue chemical jumpsuit with a pair of vacuformed styrene gauntlets...VIOLA! You have a very nice Jango for about $12 (in bulk), which you can still mark up to $60-$70 and make a hefty profit. Geez, at least have some pride in your work. I mean I would hate to be a kid whose parents spent $35 for the Jango holsters + $60 for the deluxe costume only to look like a complete moron in a pair of underoos.

That's why Ive always made my costumes since I was age 9.

Actually shawpane, the rubies is not that bad considering the alternatives, spend time + money searching for a DP, get a DP recast, or get a FG cast of a mystery helmet...The rubies is actually a decent helmet, the top is not flat like some DP's Ive seen, plus the vinyl material holds it shape well.

I dislike the Rubies intensely, because not only does it suck, but they are charging twice as much money as DP charged for their helmet that sucked only marginally less.

Sadly, I am short enough that I have no neck in the DP helmet. No, I can't just put the helmet up higher...not if I want to see anything. I will probably end up wearing the awful Rubies thing, if I can find one on clearance.

My buddy Shawnpayne is modifying one for me as part of a trade. I'm only 5'2" so it fits me well. He's put in a new visor and rangefinder, a hard hat liner(I think), he fiberglassed the inside to make it more sturdy and put a pretty crushed velvet liner inside He's installing some cooling fans and a mic system for me and will be repainting the entire helmet as well. I'll be posting pics when I get it.
