PIPING TUTORIAL (Jango Vest)

Hey Everyone! So, for those taking a crack at making their own vest I thought I'd put some help out there! This is a semi-quick tutorial on how to do the piping on the jango vest.


Ok for this tutorial I'll be using a vinyl. This will work with leather but remember that leather is a bit thicker/tougher and you'll be sewing through 4 layers at one point!

For starters i cut my piping piece at about 1 3/4inch wide. This will give about 1/2inch seam to sew the face and lining to. You can cut this piece whatever size you need for seam allowance and to adjust for the cord thickness. So on the left I've got my cord and 1 3/4inch strip for the piping and on the right I've got the front and back panels.

Now the cord is going right along the back of your vinyl piping strip. The vinyl will be folded over the cord and stitched as tightly in place as possible! You can use some spray adhesive if your having trouble holding closed the vinyl while sewing.

Your going to need a smaller foot on your machine (something like a zipper foot will do). Their is special feet for machines made for piping the get the stitch really close!

When sewing the piping down you want to keep the the foot as close to the cord as possible! Don't put to much pressure because you"ll sew right over it! Just keep it close and tight and it will look great!

Ok now that you've got your piping done, your going to have to sew it to the face(or lining.....doesn't matter). Place the piping on the edge of the good side of your material facing in. This is where haveing a good seam allowance and nice even fold on your piping really helps!

Now with it all lined up sew right over that same stitch. Again keep it as close as posible to the cord!

Ok one more step and your there! Once you got the stitched down, get the lining/face and put it "good" side down so you sandwich the piping. Get it nice and lined up the edge.

Now your going to sew over that same stitch again but this time your not going to be able to see it! So your going to have to feel for the cord and and keep the foot against it.... once againf keeping it nice and tight against the cord. Be carefu here cause the layers of vinyl your sewing here is pretty close to the thickness of the cord and you can easily sew right over it!

Now pop it inside out and........there you GO!

Cool, i did almost like that, if you use leather, after sewing the pipe you glue it to the rest, them make some sew in to the main vest.

Well I live in Los Angeles and our downtown has a whole district dedicated to just fabrics! So that where I get most of my vinyls. But I'm sure there is a ton of good sources on line!

Ok, question... I want my seamstress (mom) to attmept this with my help. She says her sewing machine cannot handle that many layers of leather, I did notice you are using an industrial machine... is it possible with a high quality (but not industrial) Husqvarna machine to sew the piping like this?

I'm getting a vest done by a lady in the mandalorain merc's site and it's costing $50.00 to get it done since i need it to go with the color scemem i'm doing but i have to say that jango's gear is very bad *** and i also must state it's a bit hard to make some of his gear when doing it from scratch , i'm helping out a friend to do jango's gear up
