The Parts of Star Wars (a great site which I was dismayed to find is gone, having not been there in a while) had the braided belt listed as being part of a horse bridle. They had some photos of a similar braided bridle, and it was dead-on accurate.

Those look a little on the thick side. I don't think that each braid could be much thicker than 1/4". There are 20 braids and the girth is about 5 1/2" to 6" wide.
Look also, in Horse tack for "braided leather lunge line". These are a constant thickness throughout their entire length, and come up to 30' long! On the down side though, it'll still probably take 2-3 to get a 14 strand girth, depending on your waist measurement.

The braid is a 4 strand 1/4" round braid. It is not hard to do, just time consuming. I will be purchasing the leather in a couple of weeks & I'll keep you posted on the progress. I'll also take pics for a tutorial that I'll host on my website.
The belt could be made with whip rope. The kind used to make bullwhips and such. Doing a search proved that this route would not be the most cost effective but probably one of the quickest routes.

After much searching and scouring of the Imperial databanks, I have FOUND IT!!! THE SECRET OF THE BRAIDED BELT!
Now, it'll take a while, but just sit down in front of the TV for a couple of hours and get it done.
This is the site that shows how to make a 4-strand round braid, EXACTLY like Jangos belt.
Now, according to sources, Jango had about 20 of these single braided ropes fit together to make one large belt.
So, here's the scoop -
Just go to any hobby or craft or fabric store and get leather laces or leather string, 1/8" in size.
Since your braiding will actually shorten the leather quite a bit, the length of each strand of leather lace will need to be approximately 3x your waist size.
And since you actually double-over the lace to make 4 strands from 2, your strands need to be 2x the 3x of your waist size.
Confused? Okay, I'm a waist size 36, so 3x that is 108 inches. So, I'll need 4 strands of 108 inch leather string.
BUT
Since it's actually 2 strands just doubled over to make 4, that's actually 216 inches. So for each braid, I'll need 2 strands of leather at a length of 216 inches, each.
All in all, for me, that 40 strands of leather lace (or string), 1/4" in diameter, and each 216inches long. Sounds like a BIG project.

After starting my braids last night while watching Shark Week, discovered a couple of things. First, 1/8" leather will work fine! I got a few spools of it at a Michaels Craft Store in Texas. $10 for 75 feet. Which is good for several braids.
Now, my above calulations for the lengths of leather needed were a little exaggerated. 4 strands of 108" leather were enough to go amost 1 1/2 times around my waist. So, beware of that.
Plus, the leather will stretch a bit after it is braided.
That being said, make your own appropriate calculations and good luck!!
Can laces that length and width be found? I'm up for braiding, used to make bracelets all the time with string in a somewhat similar fashion.

Yes, you should be able to find spools of leather lace or leather string (use the 1/8", it's pretty common) in the Leather Craft section of many hobby/craft stores.
And yes, the process is very similar to making bracelets, but even more so to making bullwhips, which is how I found the tutorial in the first place.

Since I haven't found any leather lace that was thin enough to get that look of the belt on the C2 mannequin (see top of page) I figure why not make it. Get this tool, hit the thrift stores and find a brown leather jacket for reasonably cheap, seam rip it, and use the pieces to make lace that is the perfect thickness for a braid. Not to mention, you'll get more lace from the jacket than any spool you'd buy.. And probably cheaper.
Lookie what I made! I think I still ned to trim one layer of braid off, but I'ts pretty close. If there is any interest, I may make a few more for sale or trade. Let me know what you all think.

I have a stupid question. How are you guys attaching the belt(s) in the back?
I've heard Velcro, and I've heard buckles. I know the ammo belt is attached with velcro cuz you can see it in the pic of the C2 manequin up on the top of this thread. As for the braided belt... Maybe whojedi can enlighten us as he got to play with the C2 Manequin.
So, am I right in assuming that the braided leather is glued to a backing?

has material stitched on the back of each individual braid but i don’t like the look of it- even though it is on the back! so my new one (with more accurate braids that look AWESOME) I am using very thin leather chord/thread to weave each braid to the other. this is much cleaner and more flexible as well as being a bit lighter. then the connection in the back will have two nylon or leather straps (haven’t decided yet, with quick release plastic buckles. then the whole thing will be covered with a strip of leather, like seen in the pictures in this thread. this belt is going to be AWESOME! a bit more expensive than I originally thought due to the time and materials, but it will be VERY screen accurate

Good work Dave... Looks like the one I'm working on. What kind of lace are you using? I'm making my own with a large piece of upholstery hide and one of those lace maker tools I posted about earlier. I went this route because all the pre-made lace I found in the store was to thick and made the braid look bumpy.
Thanks! The leather I am using is custom cut from a local leather shop. That's the only way to do it, I've found!
I finished mine about 2 weeks ago. Here's a quick scan of it.
What I did was, after the leather was braided, I took a 6 1/2" strip of a thin leather, and made a belt out of it. Then I glued all of them down tightly to the belt (the back side of the belt), with leather cement. Works like a charm!!!

I was in Wal-Mart and in the craft section they had braided leather in 36" sections it is like $6.99 apiece.It is kinda thick so you could probably get away with fewer strands.It wouldn't be totally accurate but it would be leather.It is the right color too! I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet.

You can buy leather lace by the spool at either Tandy Leather or The Leather Factory (which are actually the same company now even though there are two different sites). I got some and am working on my belt now.

I picked up some leather from the leather factory. Then I sat there for about 2 days cutting the lace. That lace cutting tool isn't all it's cracked up to be. I eventually gave up on it at one point, and started to cut it by hand with a pair of scissors.

Yep the braid are behind the ammo belt. And the braids are glue on a piece of leather via heavy undustrial leather glue. :)
Arturo, how did you achieve that used look on the leather ? Did you sand it, bend it, lick it good ?
dyed it brown, then acrylic black paint, then yellow ochres, then yellows, then alyziriam crymson, then spray paint it brown, then black, then sand it down to achieve weathered look. Then i let my cat play with for a few hours as a scratch board.

so basically you created layers, sanded and let the layers show through...ahhh, got it.
BTW- is there any reason why you used Black ACRYLIC for the base coat, then regular spray paint afterword?
I've learn by experience that the more stuff you put on, the better weathered look you get. I just throw in what ever it takes. And most of the times it comes out exactly what I'm looking for. Being an Illustrator helps. Sometimes you put a color that you wont even see in the end. :)

nope no sealing. I used Krylon. Yep I always thought that spray paint will crack and come of of leather but not anymore. i wouldn't do a whole piece a full solid color. I just use the paint for weathering and highlights.

Please Help!! I have ordered 2 different kinds of lace from the leather factory so far and both are wrong. They insist that they supply all stores like Michaels crafts and such with leather lace but none of it looks like what is posted in the pics above. Pleas someone describe EXACTLY what brand, size, name of lace you are using and where you get it from. Thanks many times in return.

That's because you can't buy the "correct" lace. If you want the exact stuff, you'll need to cut the lace yourself.
Is that what Seeker and Darthdav did as well? If so, to what dimensions and what kind of lether was bought? Thanks guys, sorry for the constant questions.

When you use the lace cutter, there are 2 different slots where the blade can go. Put the blade in the second slot from the tool, so that each of the 4 spaces are wider. Then just cut with the third smallest slot down. Using that size, I was able to make the entire set of 19 strands sit at about 5 1/4" wide.

Looks fantastic! Now did you cut your own leather or buy lacing? I looked at Michaels this weekend and nothing looked right. If you bought and cut your own, where did you buy from and what kind and color of leather did you buy?
Thanks for the compliment. I got some leather cut by a local leathershop. That is the only way to do it. that I have found. I think the color was something like coffee or maybe dark brown. I got the cheapest but softest leather i could find. For the attachement and cover I got the cheapest PERIOD! I still have to weather it, dirty it up though.
I just couldnt stand the thought of cutting all the leather to make lace for my braided belt... so I ended up using dark brown leather lace from the leather factory, its thin flat and dark brown and is coming out just fine. If it weren't for my wife helping me with the braids I'd never get done. I ahve to be the worlds slowest braider...err. =)
Well the 1/8" lace that I bought isn't working well. It seems to be too thin in some places so I have taken Sith_camaro's advice and ordered a lace cutter. Will see what happens then :)

Mavrik, How much lace did you order? I still have to get started. I have 1 50' roll of Medbrown leather factory lace but I have to know if I need another one.
two 50 yard spools made 21 braids 32" in length. so thats 300 feet of it. It took 14 feet per braid at 32" in length. 21 braids is about 5 inches wide. so that gives you about one inch above and below your 3" tall ammo pouches. Hpe this helps.
I have a bunch of nice leather that I was going to use to make belts with. I can sell the individual braids in three foot lengths for $6 per braid plus the cost of shipping. These are the correct 4 strand round braids pictured on Jango's belt. PM me if interested.
Here is my braided belt. It has no backing to it. Rather, I wove each braided strand together. Came out pretty good. I am thinking of making a few more for people who need one.

That's what I figured.
I figured out a brilliant way to do this in half the time and half the energy.
I bought some braided nylon anchor rope at Wal-Mart, fastened it to a bigger belt and spray painted it. Nylon with spray paint gives off the same type of reflection as leather.
You don't have to braid anything, the nylon is already braided, it only costs like 8 bucks for 100 feet, and spray paint only costs like 80 cents a can.

I need to put another coat of spray paint on it, then I'm going to put some shoe/leather polish, too. The "bigger belt" I fasted the rope to was actually a piece of cloth folded over a few times.
Yep, I did almost the exact same thing!
I found brown nylon rope at a craft store.
To give it that weathered/worn leather look,
I simply applied some lighter reddish-brown
acrylic paint with a brush.
Everyone that sees it in person asks if the
belt is braided leather. It's not until they
touch it and examine it up close that they
realize it's just rope.

Hi. i am a newbie here to this forum and I have to say everyone here is so creative! I bet there's alot of artists and designers. I have half of a Jango going...and he's been put on hold. I hate to ask this question....is there anyone still making this belt? I printed out the 4 cord braid and for some reason I cannot get it tight enough to look as good as the ones here! Am I doing it wrong? Is there is someone willing to talk to me? I know this thing will take hours the braiding can be rough! Thanks for putting up with a newbie!

I am a newbie. I have stumbled across a dog leash (for a pup) that resembles close to a 4 strand braid. It is about a yard long and can be cut to fit one's waist size. Its however 5/16" in diameter but when 18~19 pieces are put together it adds up to about 5"+ which is the targetted width for the belt band isn't it?
