    My latest project

Just wanted to share my latest project because I know some members enjoy build-up pics, like myself. I started this project briefly about a month ago but had to put it down to fill orders. I finally had a chance to revisit it while waiting for resin to come in for the backplates. I hope to have the gauntlets completed by the end of the weekend.

    enjoy,
    Cruzer

    Re: My latest project

    Thanks guys.
Yeah, MandaloreFett, I go back to work on Wed. so that's why I'm pushing to get these done and start the molding. The flamethrower and whipcord build should go pretty quickly. The only piece I think will take some time is the top hose fitting for the right gauntlet.

I'm pretty happy with the detailing accuracy and the size. If they're not scaled to screen size (according to Dark-Sides measurements), then they should be but 2-3% larger. Actually I wanted to make them a tad larger because most people who suit up aren't Temura's 5'4" stature.

I've been working closely with Dark-Side as he is the "King of measurements", so I've been making the gauntlets to work perfectly with his missiles and darts.

In researching dimensions, scaling, etc., I felt strongly about concluding that both gauntlets were the same length. So, it looks like both gauntlets will measure in at 8 3/8", maybe 8 1/2"...we'll see.

Any feedback to make them more accurate, let me know.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

    The measurements sound about right...

Just a quick note...Temuera is not 5'4" by any means. He is a solid 5'8"

I disagree, standing face to face with him and shaking his hand on more than one occassion, he was a good 2-3 inches below my 5'7".

There's no way Temura is 5'8" if Cruzer and Slavefive are taller than him!

Then he must've been on lifts both times I met him. I've met him twice, both times him being my height or a little taller and I'm 5'7 barefooted.

    Re: My latest project

Yeah, he's probably more around 5'5". One time we were both wearing those fashion racing type shoes (flat soles) and I was still looking down a little to look him in the eye. I'd say he's around there. I'm only about 5"6" barefooted...I need to get me some of those lifts.

    great pics with Tem!

Started to curve the sides tonight. I need to look more closely at the ref. cd. pics to see if the flamethrower side of the left gauntlet is straight or curved.

I can't get my camara to let me take pics I can post that are bigger. Anybody know how?

Great job on the modeling, they look fantastic.

can I ask a technical question? What material are you using to create these models (cardboar? Plastic?).

    Re: My latest project

Unfortunately, I don't have a pair from another maker to do a side-by-side comparison.
They will be approximately 8.5" in length, and should have a wrist circumference of approximately 10" and a forearm circumference of about 13"-13.5".
I'm using both 1/16" and 1/8" styrene (Polystyrene ABS). I prefer it over sintra because it's more rigid.

    Thanks

Thank you for answering the question. you do great work with it the Polystyrene. I would like to try moldeling with it. Do you have a web source fo the Polystyrene ABS that you use. I am not aware of any place in my area selling it.

thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks, Laan!

I've gotten all of my sheets from my local GE Polymershapes office. Here's their website to see if there's a branch near you: http://www.gepolymershapes.com/polys...nchlocator.jsp

    Good luck!

Really nice buildup! What technique do you use to bend the Polystyrene ABS into curves?

    MOW measurements........
    right gauntlet only....

    length 9 1/4"
    wrist 8"
    forearm 12 1/2"

so a little bigger and roomier on the inside and a little shorter in length. These should fit me!!!

Thanks MandalorFett. It's kind of a trade secret but I use a very sophisticated piece of equipment called a "flower vase" to bend the styrene around to get the curves. It happened to have the dimensions I was looking for. For larger single pieces like the bottom shells, I'll heat the styrene up for 20 minutes in a 250 degree oven on an air bake cookie sheet (with the window open). For smaller bends like the sides of the top shells, I'll place the shell on the flower vase and heat up the side with a heat gun. With both applications, I'll roll the material back and forth on a flat piece of wood until it cools stiff to keep everything plumb and flat. I'll usually have to go back with the heat gun to do spot work here and there...but it works.

Firstsonofsolo, those measurements have changed a tad now that I have them temporarily assembled.
    Length = 8.5"
Front wrist inner circumference = 9.5"
Back forearm inner circumference = 12.75"

I always hated the pinching and then wrestling with the gloves & sleeves when putting gauntlets on, so I intentionally made them a tad larger and conforming to a normally shaped forearm for comfort and ease of use. I'm hoping those dimensions will work for most arm sizes. If not, the fiberglass shells will be able to be trimmed and adjusted before being assembled to achieve smaller circumferences. It's amazing how much fiberglass can be bent with a little heat.

A-G, I've a couple of buddies in need of Jango gauntlets, so it's the whole purpose of this build. After they're taken care of then I'd be happy to make them available to members in need.

Well, progress has slowed a bit for the sake of accuracy, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've alway felt the right gauntlet was more difficult to build. Tomorrow I'll build the flamethrower and start assembly on the left gauntlet.

Enjoy. and I'll gladly take any feedback that'll help make these more accurate.

Thanks for the tips. A flower vase (wonders what the code word means)?

Seriously, great work! My only question is the positioning of the whip cord housing. Is it slightly too high on the gaunt?

Lorenzon there are alot more people on here that will critique you than I. My only suggestion is to blacken out any lines you may have so others can compare them to ref pics.

Personally I think they are awesome man!!

    Re: My latest project

Thanks guys. I've already made a couple of modification according to some feedback, and I'll check on that whipcord positioning.

Firstsonofsolo, your right, it will be easier to discern details once everything is one color...and not a palette of plastic, glue, bondo, and spot putty! Once I have all the pieces built, I'll give em all a coat of professional auto primer and then the details will be able to be seen better.

I'm working on the flamethrower at the moment, but I actually had to report back to work today...so fewer hours to prop build now.

I should have the left gauntlet temporarily assembled by tonight, so I'll shoot some progress pics and post em.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. Let me know of any suggestions.
I'll notch out the recessed areas for the exposed hinge once I receive some very accurate hinge that's coming all the way from Italy.
I'll also start fabricating the right gauntlet top hose attachment and hose fittings, and flamethrower nozzles.
I edited the thread with some better pics.

    thanks

I'll have to figure out the costs of materials, hardware, and time it takes to put together a kit and price shipping expenses before I can come up with an estimated price. After I put together a couple of kits for friends, then I'll have a better idea. However, I've told a few people that wanted a ballpark figure that I'm estimating somewhere between $200-$300 for a kit that contains everything needed for an "almost complete" assembly (i.e. shells, flamethrower, whipcord, hose fittings, nozzles, double hinges, switches, buttons, LED, & hoses)...all except for the missile and aluminum parts which I'd ask my "assistant" from Italy to provide. I don't have a missile I can cast and I don't want to try and make one when Dark-Side has already created what I think is the most accurate Jango missile available.:thumbup

Oh, and if I can produce them cold casted, then that'd be an option as well.

I was actually refering to the various dimensions and measurements of the gauntlets. Dark-side played a key part in helping me calculate, and estimate at times, the scale of the guantlets. Most of the time his calculations seemed to run a little smaller than mine. But I also think we are of two different schools of thought when it comes to prop making and scale: He seems to lean more towards screen size accuracy, while I'm all for the best size for most people.

The hinge that Dark-side can get is more accurate than the ones available to me at my local Ace Hardware or Home Depot. The pin area diameter is narrower and the link sections are longer, very similar to the hinge used on the original prop. I had a chance to see it up close at CIV and I'm convinced it's the most accurate I've ever seen.
As for cold casting, I have yet to try my hand at it. But I do have a reliable source, and if there are no big differences between using that type of resin and the aluminum filled resin I already use for my backplates & kid gauntlets, then I would see no reason for a price difference. I should be ordering some of the resin next week to begin doing test runs, so I'll keep you guys updated of my success...or failure

    Re: My latest project

A few pics of the right hose fitting. I carved it from a bad pull I had laying around of a kid Jango flamethrower. It's made of feather light resin so it carves easily and takes a skin of bondo well to fill in all the little holes.

Thanks foxbatkllr. That's a tough call without an actual pic. I'll compare the pin diameter they give with the Home Depot stuff to see if it's any different.

Neither can I, zxwing! It'll be neat to have that first pull in my hands, especially if these go cold cast!

    Re: My latest project

    More build up pics.

Stayed up till 3 last night...I was in the prop making "zone"!
Finished the right gauntlet top hose fitting housing and side hose fittings (which will be molded for duplication). The side hose fittings can also be dissasembled and attached to 2" brass nipples to make the flamethrower nozzles for molding purposes. Also carved the small recessed rectangular areas on the bottom of the flamethrower, and did some general spot filling before giving everything a good sand for a coat of primer today.
I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

    Re: My latest project

I looked for a longer one...at 3 in the morning that was about all I could find at casa de Cruz.

Foxbatkllr, I compared the hinge measurements posted on the web link you provided...and it looks like they're identical to the Home Depot stuff.

TxFett, thanks bro for understanding. It's just that with my suave ways and movie-star-like looks, I don't want to unessesarily break any mislead hearts!. I know, I know, I have a face only a mother could love! (see pic below for proof)

Ok, Ok, now to the serious stuff. I need your guys' input about the metal tube that goes underneath the whipcord unit.
My question is, would you rather I incorporate one into the mold so that it is resin and permanently attached to the rest of the unit (exactly like I did with my kid gauntlets), or would people prefer I leave it off so that a real metal tube could be inserted in place there. Only problem with the latter option is that we'd have to find a good source for the metal tube that fits the bill. In the past, I've used the metal shafts from garage utility hooks, but I think they're a tad small in diameter.

    thanks

Gave everything the final coat of professional auto primer with the spray gun today. Just need to do a little finish sanding to get everything nice and smooth, glue the hose fittings to the whipcord housing...and then they'll be ready to mold.

    Re: My latest project

Thanks guys, I'm glad you're happy with them!
I'm pretty happy with them also. However, they're being produced with you guys in mind and for your use, so let me know if there's anything you see that needs changing. I tried to capture all of the intricate details I felt I saw from both the CII & Paris ref. pics, from random shots like the Dressing the Galaxy runway show, and from Dark-Side's valuable input as well...even though he's still hesitant about them being "too big"!. I'm starting to think measuring rulers are smaller in Italy!.

Great work! Those gauntlets looks sooooooo clean.
Thanks. The type of feather-fill primer I used really works good on smoothing everything out...so I can't take all the credit. Unfortunately it also smooths out the fine details you want too keep, especially if it's sprayed on thick. So I have to go back and fine sand all the sharp corners and edges back, as well as re-etch the marks on the right gauntlet by the darts...but it's worth it!

I wish I could throw some hinges on them and take em for a test run, but it'd ruin them for molding...and then I wouldn't be able to share!

The length is still 8.5", and the inner "circumferences" are still approximately 9.5" at the wrist and 12.75" on the forearm, with the left gauntlet being adjusted accordingly so it sits slightly lower on the arm like in the ref. pics. Only reason I know this is because I did a test fit with leather gloves on before cutting the shells into halves.

    Any questions, let me know.

Again, I'm honored you guys like em!:thumbup

    Ok Cruzer...
i don't know how does work the geometry in the USA...but in italy if the diameter is 12.75", the circumference is:

    C= π d = 3,142 x d

    that in our case is:

    C= π d = 3,142 x 12.75" = 40"(101 cm)
    The question is:
Can my girlfriend use your gauntles like a new starwars costume??
Like:Hi,I am dressed like the right jango gauntlet, look how it fit on my waist!!!

So, as i told you a loooooooootttt of time:

    THEY ARE TOOOOO BIG!!!!

Ok,sorry guys but I don't want confuse you...

All the misuraments are "almost" perfect!
I think they are only a little bit bigger in the circumferences than MOW.
For the rest, trust me,they are pretty close to the reals!

    Always IMHO!!

I think he is talking about the perimeters, not the diameters ...

    Re: My latest project

...ok, you guys are making me crazzzzyy!...in a good way!

Ok, first I would never compare my amature work to what I consider the work of a "master builder" (MOW) here on the boards. So I won't do that. All I can do is take measurements of my new gauntlets and post them so others can see if they may be able to use them in their costumes.

Let me snap a few pics and mark them with some dimensions and then I'll post them as soon as I can.

All the misuraments are "almost" perfect!
...is there a "strangling" smiley I can insert here

    Thanks,
    Cruzer
