    My 20 lb. back armor!

Ok, it really only weighs about 6 lbs...but it looks like it should weigh that much, especially when knowing I've used over an entire gallon of bondo on it and and got another quart last night. Good thing this is only the "master" to make a silicone mold!

After 2 failed attempts and about 20 hours later, here's what I've got.

The shoulder span is approximately 15" which puts it in just about 1/2" wider on each side than my BKBT collar armor, and if I go with the movie accurate length to width ratio then I need to make it 17" long (the top cut line at the bottom).

Give me some feedback and let's get some of those "overlay" specialist to see where I need to tweak it before I start on the finishing sand and start filling all the tiny holes.

If I never have to build one of these things again, it'll be too soon!!

    Enjoy,

what are you using? is that bondo? what are the white block things doesn't the bondo/resin stick to it? love the overall shape. If you are doin exact measurements, are your measurements physically the same as the screen jango?

I hope you are using a breathing mask, that stuff is not healthly for you. I may use body filler on occassion, but I try not to. It just takes too long to properly cure.

That third jet pack strap is interesting. I've never seen that before. That back armor is looking spot on! Great job on everything! Looks like you're taking it pretty slow with all that bondo and sanding! Patience will make perfect though, and it seems like you've got plenty!

great work so far!!! i'm no expert on making molds, but i have seen carvable foam with great density which would need just thin skin of filler to smoothen out the final finish. hmm..lookin like cruzerprophouse inc.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Thanks guys for the support, this thing is as much for everyone here as it is for me. Once I get my suit up and running for CIV, I'll make these available to members here.

It dawned on me that I left the backplate approximately 1" longer in length than the original dimension taken from that ref. pic. So with that in mind then the shoulders should line up perfectly, the back can be trimmed to enhance any curves on the side, and the bottom can be trimmed 1" to make it the screen accurate dimensions or left long for taller people.

Right now the backplate is approximately 15"x18". I'd like to stay with the 15" across the shoulders because it works well with BKBT's upper body armor, which I feel is the most accurate made availble to members. The sides can always be trimmed down and/or the neck hole widened.

So it looks like I just need to bring down the center circular area a little and bow it's lines a little, make a trim line for the bottom cut out half-circle, add the side flaps, and the jp strap holes and overhang.

Thanks for the input everybody. So far I've done nothing but hand sand this thing because I feel I can control the contours better. So hopefully that'll pay off in accuracy.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

Thanks guys. Stole a few minutes early this morning to finish these up. They're approximately 1.5" wide and 1/8" high. I'm not sure if I should add a little more height to them though? Any input, let me know.

    Happy Easter everyone!

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Ok guys, for those of you who have been following this thread...I could use your input before I finish the backplate by building the side flaps at the bottom and pouring some silicone over it all.

Right now the shoulders are exactly 15" wide (1" wider than BKBT's collar armor). For more accuracy, the shoulders of the backplate should be as wide as the collar piece, and the sides of the entire backplate could stand to be tapered about 1-2 degrees more.

The problem is that I'm trying to make the backplate so that it could be used by a wide range of shoulder widths, members' heights, and those both using and not using BKBT armor.

So my question is: should I take a little off the top sides to decrease the shoulder width more to match BKBT's collar piece? Yes/no?? Are the majority of us in need of a backplate using BKBT armor?

Personally, about 14" would be perfect for me. So let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks,
    Lorenzo

I think you could leave it big & then it could be trimmed to fit after. Maybe incorporate some scribe lines into it & if the plate is to be left large these could easily be filled in.

Make your own Collar piece to match your backplate.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

...then that would be one more piece I'd have to make before CIV and I already have enough to do as it is! ...plus BKBT's fits me perfectly. In a perfect world, I would have been able to buy a backplate!

I'm thinking I'll maybe take 1/4" off each side and increase the taper just a tad.

I would say, leave it bigger and let the member trim to size, more or less one size fits all.but thats just my 2 cents "measure 3 times cut once"

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Ok, I increased the taper on the sides a couple degrees and even gave it a taper going from the front to the back. The shoulders came out to 14.75" wide, and the pen line is the cut line to make it the proportionate 15" tall like in the ref. pics. However, I'm going to leave it long for trimming. Tomorrow I add the side lower flaps and then call it done...if there are no objections that is.

In all seriousness, if you're intending on doing a run, I'm in!

P.S. How are you itending on handeling the arc on the bottom? OR are you leaving it flush and depending on where each individual trims the length, it would then be up to them to cut that part out?

You could add a paper template for the arc & then let each person cut & finish it to their own length.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

    Thanks guys.
BKBT, I'll definitely use your template suggestion. That would probably be the best for that circular cut out, GBH.

I'm still not completely satisfied with the outside shape, and it's bugging me. Something still seems to be off a tad. I'm wondering if the taper on the top is less than the taper on the bottom of the original.

As for price, as cheap as possible, guys. I know I'll have to run down to my local Officemax for extra large boxes ($5-$6), and shipping weight may run 5-7 lbs. So let me figure out the cost of materials and estimate the shipping costs and I'll get back to you guys on that. But I am hoping for about $75 or less.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

I would do the cut-out according to the "accurate" size, so those with the longer backplate will just have a bigger cut-out.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

CGClone, yeah I know what you mean.

Foxbatkllr, that's also a good idea.

The curvature on the side flaps will be placed based on the accurate sizing as well. So the side flaps will be a little longer for anyone that does not trim the back.

Here's a an overlay pic that Benkenove was kind enough to produce for me.

Thanks guys for the productive input. It has really been essential in making this backplate very accurate. I like the fact this has been a group effort, so hopefully I can show my appreciation by offering these at a very low price.:thumbup

Today after work I'll shave down the insides of the collar area a tad to flatten out some of that height, taper the sides a tad where the side flap is, and adjust the bottom part of the lines for the inner circle so that is matches the blue lines on the overlay pic a little more, and bring up the jp strap areas a bit.

I'll post update pics later tonight.

    Thanks guys,
    Cruzer

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Sorry guys I didn't post much in specifics, I just wanted to post the pic real quick before getting off to work.

    Here's some of the dimensions:

    • neck hole: same diameter as BKBT collar (complete coincidence & not planned...seriously...so worked out perfect!)
    • shoulder width: 14.5"
    • from the top of the outside of the shoulder to the black cut line: 14.5"
    • taper from front to back 85 degrees
GBH, so I would approximate that the distance you asked for is about 14.5", but I can measure it later today.

    hope that helps,

Here's a side by side until we can get an overlay...oh, Benkenove !

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

    Good question GBH!
I still have to figure out what I'm going to do for gauntlets for CIV and if nothing comes up, I'll be resuming a gauntlet build I started about a month ago. Which means I won't make any molds until all my current projects are done. So if I do make any pulls, they won't be until probably the beginning of May. If so, I may take a few orders, but will just have to see what kind of time crunch I've got going on.

Cruzer! How many sweet gauntlet builds have you done already? The problem is you keep selling them off! Stop doing that and just keep a set for yourself for once!

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Oops, I guess the cat's outa the bag!

I've been working on a Jango gauntlet build with another member here, so far it's mostly been figuring out dimensions from ref. CD pics and a few of the left gauntlet parts are constructed. I'm waiting for some parts to arrive that are very accurate and I'm trying to get my hands on some copies of actual screen used parts.

But that's another project I'll save it for another thread!

Looks like I need to decrease the dimensions of the center plateau area a bit, move over and higher the jp strap overhangs, and I still don't like how that right side looks.

I also noticed how the back of the neck line is low compared to the ref. pic. The shoulder area will need to be trimmed back and the backplate is sitting a tad wrong for the pic, but I'll check that too.

    Anything else, let me know.

Hey guys, here's the latest. After giving it a coat of professional auto primer (non-rattle can type), I see there are still a few more adjustments I'd like to make.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

    Thanks bro.

Speaking of sucking, I made the left side flap 1/4" shorter than the right side, so I gotta fix that too now...must'a been all those bondo fumes (right asok?).

I'm also waiting for my MLC V2 classic to arrive. Once it does, I'll check the fitting between the two to make sure the jp rests good against the shape of the backplate, before I make the mold. Right now, I'm anticipating towards the end of the month to make just a very few copies available.

    Thanks for the comps,

Cruzer as you notice I am watching intently, backplates to me are the one thing that seem to be overlooked so much.

I hope to make that list

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

No problem CG, and actually, you bring up a good point. So let me do this...

...let's start and unofficial interest list in this post so I can get an idea of how many people out there would possibly be interested in one of these Jango backplates for an estimated $75 shipped in the U.S. Unless the shipping is ridiculously more than I anticipate, the price will not go higher than that, and may even go down $5-$10. Also specify if you have a "for CIV" need.

    Here are the exact dimensions:
    shoulder width-14.5"
    back of neck to bottom-16.75"

    Thanks,

I'll make them available always. This is primarily an interest list so that I can see how many would like them "pre CIV", and also so that I can get an idea of how much material I'm looking at purchasing.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

Thanks guys, I made all the adjustments last night. I'll primer it again first thing after work today and snap a few more pics. This should be the final mold master.

Thanks for chiming in with the interest. It's helping to give me a good idea of how much aluminum filled resin I'll need for the gelcoat application. Plus, the amount of silicone I'm gonna have to use for a box mold is going to be quite a lot, so the more people interested, the better. I wish I knew more info about how to make a fiberglass jacket mold to save on the silicone, but I don't have any experience with that technique yet.

I'm thinking about just making trim lines for the neck and center circular cut out area, and that's it unless someone has a better suggestion. I'm thinking it would be best to leave it up to each person to trim the length and side flaps to their personal dimensions and desires. Yes/No?

    Had you covered BKBT.

    Cruzer, YES.

Unlike the front side armor, etc, this piece would be best left with trim lines. You will accommodate many more this way. I vote yes!

Hey Lorenzo, I was wondering if you could throw out a few measurements so I can get started with some pre-planning!

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

let's see, I'm at work so I'm going to try and remember as much as I can. There have been so many freak'n dimensions, angles, etc....I will never build a backplate again! It's a project for mad men!

The jp strap overhangs are 1.5" wide, the center area should be 7"-7.125", and so the outsides are approximately 2"?

And I checked that other dimension you asked for between the back of the neck and the bottom and it came out to 16.75"

    Does that work?

Thank you for the specs! 16.75", now is that the total length of the backplate or the length down to the black line you have drawn?

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

total length (to the black line would be approximately 15" and that is measuring along the contour of the back)...according to my measurements (taken from the pic of the whole backplate) the width of the shoulders should be just a tad (.25" or so) wider than the length from the shoulders to the bottom if measured along the side...make sense?

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

GBH, here are a few corrections for you on those measurements you asked for: From the jp strap overhang to the side is 1 7/8", from the bottom of the overhang to the top of the shoulder is 5 3/4" and that is following the contour.

The wind picked up later in the day yesterday making it impossible to paint anything in the driveway...so I did get some good kite flying in with my son and the neighborhood kids. I'll post update pics later tonight if I can get some painting done today.

Re: My 20 lb. back armor!

I'm done...if I don't quit cutting and trimming on this thing now, I'm going to go crazy.

Here's the final version, I'm going to give it a final sand and a thick coat of Duplo silver paint to smooth everything out...and then it'll be ready for silicone. The trim lines are there and the cutout areas for the jp straps are recessed slightly for trimming.

I've gotta move on to another project or else I'll start looking like this !!!

Here's a side by side. I've never been happy with the angle of the top right side, and now I know why...its angle is 1 degree less than the left side. I've already started on the spot work. If I don't make the adjustment, my conscience wouldn't allow me to mold and sell this backplate with that discrepancy. And we can't have a bunch of Jangos running around with asymetrical backplates, right?

CG, I only want your $$ if I feel I've really earned it. Trust me, it was off by 1-1.5 degrees and it was bugging the heck out'a me. I was able to sleep better last night knowing that I had already begun to fix it, and the adjustment will be finished by today....so no biggie. I'll gladly take your money and put it towards a set of MR Jango blasters anyday!

reveal1, your box is open, but I almost sent your backplate back to you the other day!...now you'll be getting two back.

Jono, "resistance is futile"...Is that a cult movie foul!

There are two sets on feebay right now!

Youve earned, your attention to detail is amazing and inspiring!

And we can't have a bunch of Jangos running around with asymetrical backplates, right?
Hey Cruzer, Ive just noticed this if you havent yet, but the semi-circle cut out compared to the pic of the real thing, I think yours should be a bit shorter, or lower. The top of the curve on your sculpt is higher in comparison to the real one. Other then that, I think youve got it dead on as far accuracy is concerned. Very good work!

I think that the curve is higher becuase the whole backplate is longer to accomodate multiple different sized individuals. He intentionally left it long, but there are cutoff lines that would make it look exactly like the screen pics.

Yeah, fettfanatic is correct. He made the backplate longer for taller people. It will be trimmed to be "accurate" for those who are "accurate-sized."
