    Re: jdfett Jango project

actually i ended up getting ahold of some bkbt armor...the jd armor will only be my knees and the backplate...which are the missing pieces from the bkbt set...i aquired them from someone who couldnt work on them...they only needed very little trimming and sanding before i applied the r&b...

it does appear somewhat even...in person there are some spots that are not quite as shiney but i think im going to attribute that to instant weathering even with the duller spots...the picture doesnt do the really shiney areas justice...i could comb my hair...if i had some (i do maul as well) in the reflection in some areas..

    Re: jdfett Jango project

so i took a small break from the armor to start working on my kamino jet pack. I got the pack from a garrison member who upgraded his boba pack. This one originally came to me from Chris G. from the NEG who had bought it from Brian A. It was Brian's first Boba pack.

here's how it came to me...

here it is in stage one sanding...this was a real pain i gotta tell ya!

notice the rockets have been removed for now...I have to fix a couple sections with some sign plastic and bondo so i had to remove them for now. plus it made sanding easier. Ive got to hit the whole thing with some super fine sandpaper still as i used a slightly corse grit to get it to this stage

There also was a few minor fixes needed in the structural integrity of the pack....

    holes from beacon and stabilizer

the back was also cracked and needed repair...

so i picked up some sign material

filled in the holes from the back with the sign material glued with abs cement

then finished off with some bondo

one thruster hole was pretty banged up as well so i used the same technique to clean it up and i'll put a new hole in.

all the bondo needs a sanding and another coat for durability, then the pack just needs to be primed a few times with some high grit sanding inbetween coats and then painted.

i was then able to get the thing sanded and primed and start the repaint. I was really trying hard to get everything super smooth until i looked at the reference cd for Jango and saw a bunch of weathering and really rough surfaces on the pack. so I figured I would sand it the best I could and work with what i had to make it look more weathered and used.

here it is all primed up and ready to be painted

I thought hard on what to do first seeing as the color scheme of this pack is basically insane. I figured a good bulk of the pack was done in yellow so thats what i did first. I used painters tape to mask out the areas and then painted it with farm equipment yellow followed by a mist of popsicle orange and leather brown. I still need to put the weathering on but i will wait till the whole pack is painted to give the weathering a more uniformed look.

some lines aren't perfect but i will be overlaping some of the areas with the other colors, which was done on purpose. anything that doesnt work out perfect will either be then touched up with a brush or weathered over.

    Re: jdfett Jango project

so i finally finished the paint part of the jet pack. The latest in the costuming...go figure category....is this,

I get the whole thing all painted up and it's looking mighty fine...i figure..what the heck, I'll R&B the missle...so i apply the rub and bring it upstairs to give it a quick once over with a papertowel, dont want it too shiny ya know....and as im doing that...the missle cracks off the top, bounces on the kitchen floor and shatters in a shard of thrill and excitment.

I've gotta tell ya...my reaction wasnt what i thought it would be...ya know...frazzle friken mutha farker, ect ect...I just looked at it...smirked to myself and said...in a soft and quiet voice..."you've got to be kidding me."

I gathered up the tiny pieces and made like a christmas story, super gluing it back together. once i had it mostly looking like a rocket again, It was then the question...how am i going to attach this to the pack now...

I found the jango knee darts that came with my knee kit and put one to good use. Grabbed some bondo and sopped some to the outside of the knee dart and stuck it in the missle. The did the same for the pack. I coated all the lines that were visable and needed a tad more structure also with bondo and held it for a couple minutes to keep it straight, problem solved

so here is a picture of the pack with repaired missle...you can see the bondo by the base...I need to sand the bondo and touch up the white when its cured...then the pack needs weathering and the decals, fix up the thrusters and I'll be done...

Depends on the jet pack (there were several hero packs and stunt packs). On every Kamino pack, the part that borders the rub n buff part of the rocket and the white part is black or dark grey. In some photos however, there is a stripe at the very base of the rocket.

    thatnks fox for that pic...again

I musta missed that for some reason...ya, i'll hit that with the flat balck and a brush tomorrow...

looks like the thrusters are base white with a full black stripe at the bottom as well.

can't wait to get the decals so i can weather this puppy...

thanks skalen...i'm just trying to get this jango as close as possible so i can start working on sparta...LOL

question on the weathering...looks as if the whole pack has a slight black wash to it...i was thinking of using aryllics so i could water it down...anyone have experiance on that and should i put the satin sheen on it before the acryllic wash?

Yes the thrusters are white but NO it is not a solid stripe it is 4 (four) rectangles a little thicker and closer together than bobas but definately seperate. The also have a slight slope on the ends.

O yeah and for weathering I suggest putting on your final clear (dull) coat on before and acrylic wash. That way if you dont like it you can scrub the paint off and do it again.

You can also do some dark browns after the black wash and flick spots of browns on for dirt if you so wish.

Actually the brown works better for the arena but I like it on both...

man my eyes must be going with old age...i see the breaks in the black on the thrusters now...

im going to use the black wash as a general all over weathering...then detail it with dark browns and tans along with some spanish copper RnB layed on thicker in some spots...plus a few other colors i can see in the reference pics...

so here is the jet pack finished before i get into the weathering. I still need to paint the dark grey ring on the missile and hit the top with some kinf of "bronzish" color as well as add the stickers when they come in.

also this arrived in the mail today!

Thanks to BKBT for another fine product...as well as the little gift...

Can I pick on you one more time? The center of the + on the thruster should be white not black. The dimple should be white with either a black ring or no black ring on the lip.......

thats cool...thanks for the input...i based the dark gray from the pack i saw on the reference cd for the + center, I'll double check some other pics too but i think once its all weathered it will be hard to tell anyways.

I did have a question for anyone who may know...

in regards to the helmet, 1. should i rub and buff and then paint? 2. whats the best course of action for the black pinstriping, and what are the colors to use ( i know i saw that somewhere but i couldnt find it)

    Rustoleum royal blue
krylon "shortcuts" ocean blue (its a tiny little can)

use 1/8 in pinstriping for the helmet you can get it from autoparts stores like autozone or CSK or oreillys.......(whatever is in your neck of the woods)

if 1/8 looks too big for your helmet get the 1/16 in

thanks...i actually have that ocean blue stuff left over from my clone...i knew i kept it for a reason..LOL

here is the helmet with the rnb done...I left some imperfections as they came in the helmet figuring it will add to the weathered look later...

I may have to hit it one more time after i cut out the key hole slots and the t visor.

Wow that's pretty shiney... but not too shiney. Nice job! I don't believe paint and RnB mix very well since it's a sort of wax (correct me if I'm wrong please). Not sure what to tell you bro, I'm sure someone else can offer more light on this subject.

i was wondering if there was something that would clean it off..havnt tried anything but sand papaer and thats kind of a chore...was wondering if rubbing alcohol and a q-tip would work or something like it. Im sure someone has run into this cause you really wouldnt want to paint first...then again maybe if i was smarter i wouldve masked the helmet before doing it so it wouldnt get on anything else..HA

edit - tried the rubbing alcohol and q-tip method...works perfect...just be careful if you get in this position that you dont get it on the part you want to keep shiney...cause this apparently is the R&B finish remover...LOL

well as good as that might have looked i decided i can do better...so i stripped the whole thing back down and reprimed it today. I then decided to go with painting the blues first. I got the cheeks done this afternoon but had to order the krylon shortcuts ocean blue from an online supplier. so i wont be able to make any more progress on the helmet until that arrives. the ocean blue i had was from american accents and was a tad too dark. almost the same color as the royal blue rustolium i used for the cheeks

back to polishing some armor pieces and finishing the jet pack for now.

I actually have a couple areas i want to put a bit more black but im actually waiting for my blalck R&B for a bit of a 3d weathering effect...as far as the exhaust area...i kind went with what was on the reference cd...wasnt much black if any at all in the pack on that disc(hammerhead folder file name jet pack - left bottom 02)

Yeah, the jet pack is actually not very weathered in the exhaust vent on the real thing. Those of us with the heavily darkened exhaust vent are technically inaccurate.

Yeah, I figured if he had the slotted beacon - he might as well have a light!

It's funny, I am taking more creative liscense with Jango than I would ever consider for my Stormtrooper - everything has to be as close to canon as possible with that baby!

You know the more I think about it...I guess I am the same way...not sure what I was thinking when I said that Lapse of judgement??? Granted when I think of the flight suit - I feel it should be more blue than purple-ish... Even though it is more on the purple side...well not purple...but you know..

I guess I am just not being as much of a stickler with it as I do with my TK (granted I need another set of TK armor until I am happy with it...) There are always upgrades!!!

had a helmet paint question....i noticed on my gentle giant jango bust that the ears are a third color varioation from the rest of the helmet. is that a mess up on GG part...or does the actual helmet have three different colors. if so or if not whats the color scheme for the ears and range finder

I wouldn't rely on the GG too much. While some of them have great detail they are still an artists recreation - not an exact scaled replica.

For example the ANH Stormtrooper busts, they have great helmet detail, correct grey and blue ab button color - but have a ROTJ E-11 (Canadian Sterling with hammer greeblies on the side).

The only thing I would say about the dark blue is the rustoleum is a touch off the studio helmet looks to have a light touch of green but in darker light it looks spot on.

got my loanstar vest and flightsuit in today...but the neck seal wasn't with the stuff...hopefully i can get him to send it...things always seem to go rough for me when buying costume parts...i just dont get it! LOL

was a bit disappointed when i saw the shoulders of the vest were glued on...i may run a stitch on them through the piping seam as the glue was seperating on arrival.

I was wondering if anyone else who bought this vest did anything to help keep the shoulders down? velcro maybe? or does the weight of the armor keep them from sticking straight out?

Your shoulders actually look to big to me...

And your face is alittle inaccurate...it should look more like this:

not too much i can do about the face...seeker has that market cornered! but actually the shoulders of the vest line up with the outside of my shoulders. The leather is just kind of rigid and they stay put, even when it isnt being worn...i know his vest shoulders stick out a little but im hoping the armor will weigh it down some

Ok yeah, I just double checked, I guess the shoulder flaps are fine - I guess worse case you could always secrue some thing heavy under the shoulder armor??

got around to painting my aluminum ears while ive been waiting on delivery of the other paint i need for the helmet. I sanded a little on the edges for weathering and still need to add the black and brown "dirt" when it comes in with the paint.

    Re: jdfett Jango project

a couple more progress pictures...the armor is secured with industrial strenght velcro. I was going to go with the snap system but decided against it for now...two reasons...1...im impatient (LOL) and two, I havnt got the snaps or the glue to put them on. I may add a couple snaps later as security for the armor but this velcro doesnt seem to want to ever let go. It adhered very well to the leather and the fiberglass.

I also got motivated and trimmed, sanded and rub and buffed the backplate. I hope to replace this with a cruzer one sometime for a more accurate backplate.

still have to weather the armor pieces...if the dang paint and r&b ever comes in from the company i ordered it from

oh and I almost forgot...finished the rangefinder too..

i had some issues with getting the r&b on the areas that i had to paint..and i thought i could do a bit better on the finish so i sanded all the r&b off, reprimed, sanded the whole thing with 800 then masked and taped off the cheeks, painted with rustolium royal blue, then remasked off for the krylon shortcuts ocean blue. now ill mask off the r&b areas, put a coat or two of satin clear, then remask the painted surfaces and do the r&b over.

Oh man, make sure you put tape over the blue parts when you decide to paint the R&B, I cannot tell you how many times I accidentally brushed my finger with the slightest remnence of the silver paint on my finger. On top of that, it would just appear there, and you wont even realize it until after you think its done! lol

no kidding about that rub and buff mysterious fingerprints eh? advise to anyone would be to always wash you hands before touching anything...lol. Ya I'll be taping it up for sure before doing the r&b. I decided to put some satin clear on the two colors to bring them even in appearance as far as the finish. waiting now till tomorrow to r&b the rest..but...

seeing as i couldnt stand by and do nothing...cause i hate that...lol, i did a little more.

first i decided that the armor needed to get weathered. I also decided that the vest was too "new" looking and needed some weathering as well. I took some 60 grit sandpaper and went to town on the vest, suffing it up, eliminating the sheen it had and exposing some of the leather along the piping. you can see some of that work in these pictures of the armor weathering....

I also finished wetsanding and reclearing the helmet...again...flash and no flash

and this is the backplate modification to the cut out to bring it more towards the correct accuracy...

HAHA! i know...there is something about my impatient costume building that always pans out for me..LOL actually Ive been thinking...Ive got another costume I need to get done by Dcon08 and thats only 9 months away...9 months you say? well you see part of the costume is transforming the heavy set maul you met at dcon07 into a spartan by then, plus getting the costume together. The first part is coming along nicely...40 lbs gone so far! but i havnt even begun to think about the costume, so Jango needs to get done!

    Re: jdfett Jango project

so i finally finished the R&B and paint for the helmet...all thats left is the black pinstriping, weathering and attaching the ears, which i should be able to get done later today. I cut out the visor but it's not secured in yet...just sitting inside for the pictures. The R&B came out okay...not perfect, but this stuff is real difficult to get perfect unfortunatley. Although it gives the whole helmet a weathered look like it should have anyway...Jango didn't have a perfectly polished lid and it had it's own imperfections so I guess I can live with the outcome...
