Jango Stubby Scratch Build

Fett Seven

Active Hunter
OK, here comes my second scratch build jet pack. The first was an ESB Boba pack built from everything I could find in my garage. This time for the stubby pack I'm keeping the different building materials down to a minimum.
I've used WOF's Boba pack plans as a base for the stubby pack. Being that this is my second build, my goal is symmetry and even lighter weight than the first pack.
I didn't post the main body construction because this "WIP" post was an after thought. I will post construction pics of the side "side tanks" and center cone/missile. I have many more photos to post in the days to come and will be asking for advice from all you veteran builders out there.

The main body was made from two materials, 3mm sentra plastic sheets and a 4-1/4" cardboard tube(the tube carpet comes rolled onto). You can see the cut away of the cardboard tube for access off bonding the tube to the plastic and for weight reduction.

The next step I took, was to make the side tank covers/housings. I don't have pics of the steps in building these, but this is what I did to assure symmetry.
There are three angles or corners on the housings. I measured the angles on paper(WOF's template) with a simple angle meter. When gluing the four panels together to make the three corners(one at a time),use the angle meter as a guide.
The side tank cover were made as separate components and not permanently attached for now (mock up purposes).

This is looking superb! Like how you doing the jetpacks from Scrath build.

Will you be making stubby jetpacks in the future for people?
They seem to be hard to get these days. I don't think anybody makes them anymore.

Keep up the good work!

FYI, I know that MOW is or was making the Stubby pack. His work is top of the line stuff.
If I do get to the point of mas producing a pack, it will be a budget "kit".

As you will see in future postings, some the components of the pack I don't have official or unofficial dimensions for.
Like most who like to build, finding a low cost and simple way to fabricate a component is an enjoyable challenge. I'm always open to opinion on an easier, better, or lower cost way on making something.

Thank you all for all the kind words.

When making the side tanks on my first Boba jet pack, I used the soda can method.
The soda can is method or approach to making the side tank body I learned here on TDH.
The only problem with that is, the soda can is very thin and can be easily dented.
What I'm using now on the Jango pack is black plastic pipe(found at Home Depot). It is not the correct diameter, so it must be cut and expanded(with heat gun) to desired diameter.

I am also making the caps of the tanks different than before. I invested a little time and money in making a master and molds of the top and bottom caps. By using a slush cast method, I was still able to obtain a light weight hollow cap.
Making up the side tank assembly is the tank body, cap and cone.
In my next post, I will have a mock up picture of this three piece assembly.

Like I said in my last post, I'm mocking up the side tank assemblies. I have come up with prototypes for the cone that sits atop of the side tanks.
The cone on the left(in the photo below) was made from modeling clay, molded, casted and painted. The second one, cone on the left.
I took the top 1-1/2" off the donor cone that will become the cone for the main rocket(more on that later).
I was going to put the cone of choice to a vote, but with all three cone together in a comparison photo, it's clear witch one most resembles the original.

Once upon a time I came across a child's drinking cup from Denny's restaurant. I thought to myself "that looks like a shape I'm looking for".
So I took that shape filled in the drinking straw hole, made cheap test mold and cheap test casting. This became the base for the center cone/rocket for the stubby pack.

Center cone Part-2
I found that the size of the red cone in the previous post would not be tall enough for the stubby pack center cone. I cut a section form the body of the drinking cup to extent the skirt of the red cone. Made a latex mold and casted a piece that comes very close(or close enough) to the original stubby center cone. The last photo is a side by side of the finished casted cone next to the donor.

Center Cone Part 3.
Using what I could easily find to make the support body for the center cone.
I used a 3" plastic PVC pipe coupler found at a home improvement store.
The rings that reduce down to the diameter of the center cone are the centers from rolls of tape.

Ok just now getting back to this old project. This project that was to be a one time Arena pack scratch build became the Boba Fett jet pack kit I offer for sale. With the help of a friend who makes the molds for me I can now make multiple copies of parts not just "one offs".
So here are some pics of the "my" Arena pack kit. My friend Dynamic1 will also be posting pics on this thread as his WIP. He has a copy of my kit and is doing a build and paint up.

ALright guys..here I go w/ my first Stubby JP assembly as well as paintup : ). I have been amazed watching this unfold. Below are some initial shots beginning w/ the prelims. I wil be posting as I migrate thru the process as usual.
