Jango: My First "REAL" Build

Hey there Brothers & Sisters - I've been here for a relatively short while admiring the work and talent that everyone displays, wishing some day I could join the ranks of a "builder." Well.....here I go! After acquiring an ASOK Helmet with some additional extras for an UNbelievable deal I am throwing my hat into the arena. I have a Vader in my dining room, but I wouldn't call purchasing items here-and-there, light sanding and basic painting a "build." With Jango, though items will be purchased, I will have the satisfaction in the end of knowing that I will have put-forth a significant amount of time, research, energy, sweat, and even a little creativity. Spare time is little & far between, so there won't be a lot of updates, but here is what I have so far. The jumpsuit is being altered to fit me in the torso, and I am sharpening up the lines on the vacuum formed gauntlets; as well as altering them to be a bit more accurate. I am also waiting on a cod and knees from CRUZER. Unfortunately the TDH member who sold me the items didn't quite remember where everything came from, with the exception of the helmet.

Any input would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Something looks off about the shin armor...can you take a picture of just that piece? Also are you planning on dying the jumpsuit? As it stands it look really blue. Looks like a good starting basis for your Jango.

SS - Yeah. I agree on the shins. What it is, I believe, is that they are creased as opposed to rounded. That might be what looks "off." The shins will be replaced, as will the boot armor and the backplate. I will get a better pic of the jumpsuit in the light. From there, if it is recommended that it gets dyed, then I'll do so. I very much appreciate the input. Your build thread is one that I followed closely and with a lot of admiration.

For my jumpsuit I used a combination of purple and navy blue rit dye...i think my jumpsuit was about as blue as yours when I first got it. If I could dye it again I would use purple and denim blue to try to help fade it out more. Oh and thank for following my thread...I was really hoping to have documented it better...I hope it helped a little.

Just a quick update. I've been working on the helmet some more. I get impatient when painting and want to be able to multiple coats each day, so I've been trying to be good and do some light painting then giving several hours, then some more light coating then waiting until the next day. I was getting close to finished on the modified Rubies Blasters.....then they fell from their hanging place; DANG! Anyhow, not much for now, but something. I made some progress on the L gauntlet and will get a pic up soon. Oh yeah, and I am waiting on some of Cruzer's knees and a cod, as well as a MoW V1 "Stubby!" AW-SOOOOOOOOME....

Just another quick update, as my schedule and the wind have not been cooperating. Added the darker blue on the RF, mandibles, etc. Any inout would be appreciated. I'll be re-sanding and polishing over the next couple of days, followed by the shield installation and some (what I've seen referred to as) "strategic weathering," to hide the fact that......I'm just NOT a painter! Anyhow, anxiously waiting on a set of CRUZER'S knees & cod, as well as a V1 "stubby" pack from MoW. Can't wait!

Yeah I would say some clean up sanding and a coat of polish and you will be looking good. I have also had luck with using an xacto knife to clean the edges aroung the painting. Like the area at the top of the right ear. Of course this also a good place for the strategic weathering.

Mullreel - Thanks for the input. The weather cooperated today, though the periodic gusts of wind were not helpful to an alley-painter. Oh well. Lots of work, with a bit of progress. Fixed the paint on the R ear then busted out some more 1000 paper, followed by some 0000 steel wool. I was a bit concerned with the laight and dark tones in the cold cast, but after looking closely at the AOTC Picture Encyclopedia cover, it looks like Jango had the same thing going on with his helmet. Input??? Anyhow, it's smooth as silk and I will hopefully get some Maguire's mc polish on it tomorrow. Then I'll have to revisit some of the visor installation tutorials and determine which is best for me and my limited know-how. Continued to sharpen the lines on the L gauntlet, but still a ways to go. I am contemplating on busting out WoF's templates and a FOR SALE sign and completely redoing the bottoms of both gauntlets. Finally I managed to lay down the silver on the Rubie's mod Westars. Any suggestions for the grip color??

It's not going to be the best or most accurate Jango out there, but with the work I'm putting into it and what I'm learning to do it'll definitely be one of the most appreciated.....and it'll be MINE!!!

As always, any input, direction or guidance is appreciated.

Hey obro- Check out my Jango WIP. Here is what I used for the handle on the westars. I purchased it at Lowes and its a dull pewter color. Also, As Delvilstar suggested in my WIP, get the gold colored washer for the tips if you already havent...HUGE difference for the toy blasters man.

Dynamic - Yes, I saw the hint about the washers and it makes a BIG difference! I will definitely be doing that. Also, thanks for the tip on the color for the grips. Hopefully I can make a stop at Lowe's tomorrow. In the meantime I will revisit your wip thread. Thanks again!

Cool- Also, I removed the other 2 pics after I knew you saw them...didnt wanna steal your thunder bro : ).Great work so far buddy!

My jumpsuit seems to be the same colors as you guys right now. How do I go about getting and using the dye? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question, I've just never done anything like this before and I'm really nervous to mess this up

I went to Joann Fabrics and bought the liquid RIT dye. I used 1/2 TSP Denim Blue and 1/8 TSP Purple...the recipe is only for 1 cup of water...you obviously need more than 1 cup to dye the flight suit. I think I needed 20 cups of water to dye the Jump suit. that comes to needing to measure out 10 TSP of Denim Blue dye and 2.5 TSP of Purple dye. What I did was pour the amounts of Dye in to a small container and mixed them....than I heated water on the stove and poured it into a trash can ( Yep My trash can is now Jango Purple :) ). Than mix your dye into the water and dump the jumpsuit in. The longer you leave it in the darker and the more the color will set. I think I left mine in for 30 mins, maybe 20 mins.

I would suggest that you test dye using the 1/2, 1/8, 1 cup of water recipe first...i tested the forearms of the jumpsuit because they would be hidden by the gauntlets....I think I did 4 tests before I got the timing right. Sadly it is not an exact science. Hope that helps.
