Jango "Classic" jetpack build (lots of pics)

A while back I had the opportunity to assemble and paint A Jango Fett Jetpack for a fellow 501st member and I thought I’d share some of the progress pics. Some of you may have already seen these on my FaceBook page, for those that didn’t, enjoy…

I’ve been in the replica prop/costume building community for year and years. I’ve worked with several different variations of the Boba/Jango jetpack, some good, some… not so good. This particular Jetpack was cast by Man-of-War studios. The larger components were roto-cast (hollow) and the smaller pieces were solid resin. Over all, the pack was really nice right out of the box and for the price range a great prop. Nice enough that I plan to order one for myself later this year.

I didn’t get any pics of the pack right out of the box. This one shows the pack after I had done all of the basic clean-up/sanding/filler on the mold-seams and primed it with some primer.

This shows the holes I “dremeled” out for the side thrusters.

Trimming out the back “hatch”. You can also see the inside of the pack in this photo. Unfortunately there was a lot of webbing on the inside that had to be trimmed out. In addition to this, there were several areas on the casting that were very thin. I fixed this by reinforcing them on the inside with a little bondo and then applied some expanding foam to give it a solid, but lightweight feel.

I built-up a “socket” for the thruster to fit into with bondo and expanding foam. I than glued a rare-earth magnet in the base of the socket and in the end of the thruster. This allows easily attaching the thrusters without opening the back of the pack up. In addition to this, the thrusters can still rotate to your desire.

Just like the thrusters, I used magnets to attach the “rocket”. This photo only shows 2 magnets, but I ended up mounting 4 of them, to prevent any wobble.

And with that, the entire pack got wet-sanded and another coat of primer… and it’s ready to paint.

I decided to put white down first. There are several different orders you could use. But for me, I like to work lightest to darkest.

Then I let it sit for a day so and taped off the areas I wanted to remain white.

I than laid down the yellow/orange color. On a side note, I was actually shocked at how much more orange the Jango version has compared to the Boba. If you also note in this pic, while I was letting the yellow dry, I went ahead and painted the black details on the rocket and thrusters.

This pic already shows the tape removed, but I went in and masked off the areas I wanted to keep white and yellow, than sprayed down the red stripes and keys.

I got lazy and forgot to take pics of taping off the areas for the blue paint… but think about it, it was blue-painters-tape and blue paint… there wasn’t much to see. But anyway, here’s the pack with all of the major colors applied. It makes me wonder how did somebody pic these colors/pattern for the pack? I’ve often considered buying a 1970s Datsun and painting it to match the Boba Jetpack… really.

Painters Tape… I think I went through an entire roll on this pack. I wish I had a patent on painters tape. With as expensive as it is, I’d be rich and wouldn’t have to build/paint props for money. But who am I fooling, if I was rich I’d still be doing this work LOL

About this time I remembered I didn’t have any decals for the pack and I couldn’t go any further until I got them. So I got ahold of “Lucksy31”, who I might add is quick and easy to work with. In the meantime, I went ahead and weathered/washed the thrusters and rocket.

Oh and look the decals showed up. My wife (shown in the photo) was very excited, she assumed they were some form of demonic flash-cards.

And with that said, I applied the decals and gave the whole thing a heavy black wash. Also on a side note, I noticed the Jango pack actually had a little sheen to the finish (as opposed to the dull/flat Boba version). Here are a couple more pics of the finished pack…

Excellent build and paint job!

I was thinking of using magnets on my MOW myself. I bought a bunch but was having trouble visualizing exactly how to do it. This helps alot! And using the magnets for the thrusters is a great idea!

SaxeCoburg,

Beautiful..and innovative!

I came across one of these photos recently on the web and now I know who the artist is behind the artist.

Excellent build!

Christian

First of all, this is Absolutely beautiful! Second, kind of a noob question: Was there a specific type epoxy or CA glue that you prefer to use for this build? I am just sanding and getting ready to start this same build and I have several in my shop to choose from. I would hate to use the wrong thing, get the paint job just right and have to go back and fix something later on that I could have prevented.

I will tune in here and say that for my last 3 jet packs that I have done I used Zap a Gap CA glue and accelerator. It goes on easy it is strong, and you can sand it if needed.

I got 1 question: what are all these items made out of... sorry for asking but im a beginer at this and im trying to make some but i dont know what they are made from.

WOW. This was a HUGE help!! I'm just starting out my Jango build and was VERY intimidated by the idea of painting my jetpack. I'm definitely saving this!!
