Hey guys, sorry for not posting them earlier. I got caught up in a gig playing for a graduation.....jeeze, over a thousand students graduating. I know, I know, I dont have any pics yet, my camera's batteries have died, and I have to go get more later. But I have started already by trimming the excess fiberglass at the bottom, and cut out the T-visor. I really wanted to cut out the key holes, but I was only able to do a preliminary cut, seeing that my dremel is too big to cut it out. I was wondering if there is any better way to cut most of the key holes out so that I can reasonably sand it to where it needs to be? Thanks.

Just got back from Home Depot...
Only was able to find 4 things I may need. Got Rust-olium royal blue, as well as rust-olium painters touch white sandable primer, scotch blue painters masking tape, and 600 grit sand paper. Need to go by an ace hardware, or walmart to get everything else. I also decided to use the screwdriver method for removing the keyholes. Gonna try out the super glue with baking soda for gap/hole filling. Anything wrong with anything Im doing so far? Just need to know before I screw it all up. Thanks.

I agree, bad idea! Just drill some small holes & use a small file to get in there to square everything up. You can get small inexpensive files at the hardware store or hobby shop.

When applying preasure to the helmet, there's a "HIGH" % that you'll slip and or the screwdriver will let go from the desired area and either go into your Support Hand, Arm, Leg or the WORST an Eye. :( DRILL A SERIES of small holes until you can sneak some small modeling files into the slotted areas, like previously suggested!:thumbsup :thumbsup

LOL, Dont worry guys, I didnt use a screwdriver. However, I did experiment a bit with my friends dremel and bit atatchments. I dont know the names of the smaller atatchments, but I used a combination to cut the keyholes, which were a series of small, needle, drill like bits. And no, I didnt mess it up fortunatly. I may be an idiot at this kind of thing, but im not a blithering idiot at least. Finally got some batteries, and now I have pics. So far, I cut out the visor, and got a small metal file, along with the sand paper, got about 99.9% of it done. The keyholes are cut out from my dremel experimenting, and with the metal file, I sanded what I could, but still need to get a thinner file to finish it up. I still need to know if that rust-olium painters choice white primer will be okay, cause I havent opend it, and I can always return it if its not okay. Here are some pics.

Sorry for the lame pics above, reminds me of how a 3 year might take pics, I'll post better ones later of course though. Fortunatly, my G-friends grandfather has a better know how of some of the work needed to be done, so I went over, and he helped me countersink a screw into the stalk (not a "screw" 'screw', a smooth bodied bolt, with a screw that fastens into the side) I dont know the technical term for it, but you'll see in the pics later on. As well as getting the proper "screws," we put holes through the resin piecs and the helmet itself. Aslo we drilled 2 holes on the top, underside to where the RF box would be attatched, as well as pilot holes for the screws that I will add after painting. Other then the RF attatchments being finished really, I as well finished sanding the visor and keyholes. The only thing left now, is to sand the helm, prime, sand... and then paint it. I plan on using a q-tip to swab on some Goop to fill the small holes in the resin pieces, as well as some smaller, descret portions of the helm. After that, I paint it all, rubb and buff it, add some elbow grease, and that will be it I guess (minus the liner, attatching the wire mesh behind the keyholes and of course, attatching the visor) Seems to be going quicker then previously expected. I just want to confirm also that it is a "1/8" inch black stripe, went out, and bought a roll at an auto store.
I'll be leaving sunday morning, and not getting back for 4 weeks (MAA and Honor Guard training at NAS Kingsville, Texas) I'll continue on July 1st probably. Cya guys then.

You can also use autobody glazing putty for any tiny holes & minor scratches. This is the air dry stuff & it sands off very easily. CA glue mixed with flour works well for the pinholes but is harder to sand off. I usually just put on a couple of coats of sandable primer. This is much thicker than regular primer & helps build up any low spots without the use of bondo. In fact, when I do my own work, I jump from 120 grit sandpaper to the primer. But then again, I a lazy painter;)
Okay, new update. I managed to finish the sanding the rough areas, and corners of the helmet. Just today, I wetsanded the whole helmet with a sanding sponge, and then with 600 grit sandpapaper. I applied the first layer of primer as well over the whole helmet. Right now waititng for it to dry so I can wetsand it again. Here are some pics as of now.

How about you start uploading some smaller pics, I have to right click, get the URL, and open it up in IE so I get a smaller photo. If you look in a microscope, you see reaaaaally close, but it's hard to see what the object is you are looking at since we are so far zoomed in.
I normally reduce pictures to 25% of their original size on my 5megpix camera.

New update...
Before I left, I decided to try and do something other then the priming and sanding, and that was to tape off a section where I think I might start to paint. On top of that, I also tested the R&B on the backside. I did the keyholes, which came out fine, but I will put 1 or 2 more layers on it later, but the dome section actually screwed me over, because I found a ruffspot while applying the test coat, and it looks nasty, but the areas around it that was smooth looked really nice. I was wondering what is te best chemical or solution to removing the R&B so that I can sand that portion again, without ruining the fiberglass?

No need to use any stripper, just wetsand the affected area & it will smooth it out & remove the RnB.

I've always wondered, how do you use rub n buff? Do you just buff it on with like a cloth until it settles?
Make sure the surface is ultra smooth by using between 600 and 800 wet grit sand paper, then just rub it on with your finger and keep spreading it out to you can't anymore, once you get your entire surface covered, come back and buff it with your palm and/or paper toweling.:thumbsup Hope that helps bro'!

What i did (after sanding it of course) i apply the R&B with my fingers until evenly distributed over the area, and then I use my palm, and rub that area hard for a few seconds, and then take a rag, and rub the same area until it wont shine any more. That usually works the best. I guess I did a good job on mine, cause both my mom and friend came in and thought it looked like real metal, so I guess I pass the test. I also put another coat of the paint on the ear pieces.

I'm a total noob to painting, but im gonna have to wise up here soon as i'll be getting my helmet from BKBT soon, is the rub and buff for just the Jango and Boba helms because of the silver? Or should I put it on my custom too just as an underlying color?
I guess, its a matter of opinion. Its really up to the person painting. The R&B works well with e jango helm because it appears to be the most accurate looking paint, as oppose to spray painting a cheap silver on it that eventually flakes off. Im a complete moron when it comes to paints, but I highly recommend the R&B. Ive heard that the model paint called "aclad 2"? I believe it is, are awsome for a real metallic look. But for a complete novice like me, the R&B looks like real metal, and even fooled a few of my friends. As far at an under coat, thats personal preference. I thought about R&B'ing the whole helm just for the sake that it any blue sections got a deep enough scratch (for whatever reason) that it would look as if there is real metal underneath. I imagine people who paint up boba helms may use an undercouat of silver paint just to make the battle damage more realistic, and more natural lookiing. I actually thought about doing the same concept for my paintball armor. Thats my opinion about it.

Hello all, heres another update (late update). I managed to obtain the short cuts, after searching like indiana jones and the lost ark :rolleyes So I got greedy and bought 2 cans of it. Other then that, Im done with the painting. Granted, there are little imperfections, that Im sure everyone has with the exception of a selected few tlented people. But Im a begginer and its the best I can do. Just a few tings I might need to ask about the RF before I attach the last earpiece to cover the screw though.

Here is the screw assembly I managed to improvise which works well. I like it because it is smooth and easily attaches. As you can see I have 3 spacers for increased tighness. I use the large plastic (cear one) spacer so that it dosnt scratch up the inside when moving around. Two smaller metal spacer for added security.

Thats all I can really do ya for, hope it helps. The only issue Im having right now though, Is that I want to be able to move the RF up and down, but I otice that it loosens the scre cap, and cause it to move about on its own. The thing Im afraid of is that once I glue the ear cap to cover it up, is that it will become loose and I wont be able to tighten it up again. Also, I came across an error, the earcap on the other side is glued too far forward, and I was wondering if there is anyway to fix it at this point, I used Goop directly too it. If theres any suggestions, please let me know how to fix it. Thanks.

If you try to pry it off, you risk screwing up a pretty expensive helmet. Since goop remains kinda flexible and doesn't really "harden" like other glues, I'd go to Walmart or Home Depot and get a package of those long scraper type razor blades(think they're by the tape and glues) and see if you can run it between the helmet and ear piece to help separate them. Even if you can only separate them a little on every side, that would be better than trying to pry the whole thing off. I posted a pic somewhere in another thread of the type of razor blade I'm talking about...I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks Cruzer. I just got back from doing a marching band performance, and I actually fixed the problem in just about 5 minutes just before I left to go play. In those 5 minutes, I managed to stick a pocket knife down the inside of it, and gradually peel it off, remove the excess dried Goop on both the ear piece, and the helmet, tape off, and re-paint the section on the helmet that the Goop had removed, and then re-align and attach the ear piece. Looks like nothing ever happend. Im good like that...

Well, today, I received my bobamaker visor. I will say, as many others in the past, this is a top notch visor. I especially like the first pic I took of it, where you cannot see through it at all. Sweet. Anyways, Ive stumbled across an issue where the installation of it is concerned. There are many ideas of how to install it, but this is a gapping issue. I would appreciate anyone who has installed a visor on the BKBT to give some advice on how to solve it. The seam where the actual visor and helmet meet has some serious gap issues, where I cant get the visor to meet perfectly with the helm. There is a pic of one major area. Please, I do not wish to appear to question quality of either products, they both are highly exceptional pieces work and I would proudly recommend them to any go-Fetter's. I merely ask for advice on how to solve this issue.

Hey Chris, Get in there with some 80 grit sandpaper & sand out the bumps on the inside of the helmet. You can then lay in the visor & hit it with a heat gun for a perfect fit. If you use the paper template I supplied & cut down the Bobamaker visor you will also get a closer fit.

By Halloween, you will see my custom Fett (To give you an idea of what it may look like, Im just gonna say I have no other Fett costume piece, other then one of thos cheap rubies jango blasters, but will not be part of it anyways...scary? :lol )

I just installed the visor in today, a second time, first time I wasnt paying attention to detail, and cost me time and having to repaint part of the mandables. But now its in, everything is as it should be, unfortunatly, no pics, camera is dead. Plus, after I repaint it, the only thing left is to just install the mini-rare earth magnets for the ear cap, and the overall basic jango is done. I am holding off on the servo for now, due to lack of necessary funds, and mainly lack of time. My deadline is tuesday, October 31. So far on time.

Last night, despite being sick, I managed to repaint all of the mandibles, ear sides, and rim, pretty much re-painted the ocean blue, and let me tell you, after this millionth time, this is the best its ever been. In fact after I stood back, and looked at it, I got chills, the good kind. I may unveil it sooner then halloween, because I wasnt expecting the amount of free time I had last night, so I may post it up by sunday or early next week. The only thing left is to do the earcap magnet attachments, which I will be goinng to mmy G-friend's house to do, because her grandfather has countersink bits and I will be celebrating my birthday. Turning 18 on the 29, celebrating early because the only other time I would be able to is in November. Im so excited:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Alright, another quick update,
Just got back, had an excellent time. They surprised me at their house, cause she decorated her living room with star wars displays, pictures, etc. One of the gifts she gave me was a star wars saga Chess set. The thing about this chess set is that the pieces are actual characters. The black pieces being the villians, and the silver/white pieces being the goood guys. At first, I thought it was just a collection of figures, but I have to tell you, these are some of the MOST DETAILED figures I have seen. My two favorite pieces are of the Bishop pieces, one being jango taking off while aiming, the other was of Boba looking as if he's pushing a button on his left Gauntlet. Just to give and idea of how detailed, the Boba figure has everything including the skull on his shoulder bell, and the other symbol (dont know name of it) on his right side chest plate.
Anyways, sorry for that rant, I drilled 3 holes for the magnets, and epoxied them in, but tonight im going to hotglue the other 3 to the actual earcap, and then it will be done. I may have pics up by tomorrow night of my FINISHED helmet. Cant wait!

Mini update since im posting:
Last night I had unexpected difficulty with the epoxy I have to attach the magnets to the earcap. Due to the fact that it takes sooooooo long to dry, I was only able to get one attached so far, only because another magnet was in such close proximity to the other, that it would just do what magnets do, and attach themselves to each other, thus, it would be pointless trying to do all at a single time. This morning, I found that the first magnet stayed happily in one spot, and that it is perfectly aligned. Now I just need to finish the other two.

Thanks, I hope I did this bucket some justice though. I didnt want to weather it purpously, also because I know that I would just ruin the bucket. So thats another reason as well. I just prefer the clean armor look. Besides, it has some gritiness to it, you may not see, but it has its own look to it. The silver though really fools people, not one person has thought it wasnt real metal until they looked inside, or I told them. I guess I did one thing right at least.

Great looking helmet, Tubachris! I'm about to start on my helmet, and had a question... what is the "Short-Cuts" you made reference to, and what is it used for? I'm completely new to painting! Thanks!
"Short Cuts" is a spin off sub-paint brand from Krylon. Its meant for small craft projects and such., as far as I know, its been the only real available accurat light blue paint for Jango's helmet. I found mine at an Ace hardware, extremly difficult to find however, so I snagged two can while I had them. The paint color is "ocean blue," Its a little short can too.Quote:
