Devil's Protocol Jango Mystery Helmet Conversion And Progress

I was going to sell this helmet, and then decided to convert it instead... Its a pretty nice helmet and I didn't wanna let it go. So far I've; filled the dent, removed the Borden thing from the cheek, and extended the lower section of the ear base by gluing a wood block at the bottom and filling it.

    More to come later...

That is a very nice bucket you have there. Really nice shape to it, good thing you decided to keep it. Hey, just back to the magnet Idea, they will fit inside. The attached part where you sit the RF stalk is thick enough to drop down some magnets. Just letting you know.

Re: Devil's Protocol Jango Mystery Helmet Conversion And Progress

Its probably not thick enough on this helmet... The ear is basically hollow... Its not like the SF where its thicker for that part. This helmet is the same thickness all the way around. The ear is the same thickness as the mandibles which are the same thickness as the dome.

Just a quick example, when I went to straighten out the cut out for the stalk (this is not lined up to stand straight on most Mystery helmets), I actually ended up cutting a hole in the helmet which had to be filled afterward.

Its still a real nice helmet, just makes it a pain for trying the magnets. I may use my post/oring idea, or just some kind of a nut and bolt system. Either that, or go with a fixed stalk.

You know what? When this coat of primer is dry, I'll snap a quick pic so you can see what I mean. Check back in a few...

Re: Devil's Protocol Jango Mystery Helmet Conversion And Progress

See the grey spot in the ear? Thats where I painted over the Bondo so it doesn't stand out so much when you glance inside the helmet. I had to put a tab of duct tape in there and Bondo the hole up from the outside because of the way its cast. Its hollowed out, and the edge had to be cut through so the stalk could stand straight.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining... I like this helmet just the way it is... I'm just explaining why I don't think the magnet system will work with one of these. Unless I can find much thinner magnets than 1/8. 1/8 might work, but I'd be pushing my luck, and probably have to fill the ear with hot glue (or something) from the inside, which I don't want to do. See what I mean?

Re: Devil's Protocol Jango Mystery Helmet Conversion And Progress

Wow, Ive never seen that before on a helmet. You know what you could do, only if your desperate enough for the magnet system, you could fill that hollow section with resin or a filler of some kind to that after, its complety solid and even with the rest of the helmet. Then, it would be solid and thick enough to put the magnets through. Just even the bolt system you want to try out, I think it may cause you some issues if you say a hole came out by accident, how are you going to prevent another or even worse, a larger hole sprouting from just installing the bolt system?

Im sure there are other things you can try doing to solve the issue, I have just never seen such a thin helmet before.

The hole happened because I cut into the helmet... lol... It didn't just 'sprout'... The helmet is still thick enough, and solid. Its just like any other helmet with the exception of the ear. I don't think he was counting on folks trying to squeeze 2 magnets into the ear base. I think he was trying to make the helmet as light and balanced as possible.

Sorry, I just interpreted the unwanted hole as an accident. Well then you should go with the bolt/nut idea. should be pretty straight forward.

Right now, I'm leaning toward a fixed stalk... I'd never be putting the rf down anyway. Plus, then I'd never have to worry about it falling.

I just finished the rub n buff, and I have some pock marks on the cheeks... Its weird because I wet sanded everything before I even started. I guess I'll have to sand that down, and re-apply it before I post more pics.

Added a couple of pics to the top post... Rub n' buffed, and a did a little dark blue...

Does anyone know if its okay to clear coat over rub n' buff? I'm not sure because its more of a wax than a paint.

I used the palm of my hand to apply it... And a scrunched up t-shirt to get in the creases. Theres no clear coat on the helmet at all. The black paint was put on with a 00 brush, then smudged with my finger. Used a t-shirt again to smudge it into the creases.

It looks very nice man, Its amazing how quickly you put this together. LoL, it took me 5 months! Outstanding work! Are you gonna use Goop to attach the earcaps? And you said your going to go with the magnets? Cant wait to see more.

Nope... No Goop... I bought Goop, but didn't buy clamps (like a dummy), and was in a hurry so I just used gel style Krazy glue for the ears. Alot of people are really against it, but I think its fine. Even the Goop package gives it 3 stars, verses Goops 4 stars. So its not like they're on there with Elmers white glue or anything (which is one star). Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it. Its eventually gonna be sold anyway, once I can afford a Jango bucket thats 100% accurate.

Really? The package says that the set time is 24 hours... Oh well, if they ever fall off or anything, I'll try the Goop. But like I said, its 3 stars vs. 4, and thats coming from the Goop people. I can live with that.

Lemme give ya an example: The first time I Gooped the left side earcap, I accidentallly made it too far forward, and this is after it dried. I was so pissed, but this was just before I had to do a marching banc performance. I only had like 5 minutes really. I took a small pocket knife to it, pryed the earcap off, removing the paint as well. I scraped off excess Goop from both the earcap and the helmet, ran outside, repainted the area after sanding it down again, came back inside, repositioned it, and re-Gooped it. This was just in a 5 minute time span, and I still got to the performance on time. BOOH YAH!

lol... But how do you keep it in place until it cures? Did you just sit there and hold it for 5 minutes or what? Goops not an instant bond according to the package.

You know thats another funny thing, it dosnt cure instantly, so I noticed it was sliding a bit due to gravity, so I just lyed it on its side between two pillows so gravity would just pull it closer to the helmet. When I got back later that night, I checked on it natuarally, and I noticed that it slide down a bit for whatever reaosn, but I pushed it up a bit, and it still was not fullly cured. Fortunatly, after I pushed it up, it stayed there for good. So, no worries.

I added one last pic (top) that I'm gonna call the final product. I still have to drill the hole in the cheek, and do a touch more weathering to the right ear bottom and maybe the RF. I decided to go with a fixed stalk after all, btw.

I almost dropped this thing once, and when I caught it, my watch clasp put two tiny scratches on the left mandible by the visor slot. To tell the truth though, I'm glad that it happened, it gives it a bit more flavor, imo. All in all, I think its a great starter/temp Jango bucket.

Man, everytime I look at that thing I think to myself what an outstanding job for a Boba conversion. That's one fine Jango helmet for not starting life as one.

As for drilling a hole in the cheek...eeek. I wouldn't do it. At one time I had actually thought I had found what that was, let me look at the ref. pics again.

Regardless, good job! Makes me want to have a Jango EPII helmet again.

oh, forgot to add that the weathering looks really good too!

Heres the cheek hole... I was just gonna drill a hole, and back it on the inside with a piece of black electrical tape. Yes, no, maybe so?

I dunno... I can't tell... I think it just looks recessed rather than straight through. But still, I think drilling through will be fine as long as its backed with something.

Well guys... I put this up on eBay tonight... I decided that I could use the extra cash for buying Xmas gifts and such. Do you think a BIN of $350, with an opening bid of $250 is too much?

I don't really know what to ask for it, but I've seen poorly painted Boba mystery helmets go for as much as $600, so I figured that'd be about right. What do you guys think?

Well, I plan on eventually buying either the BKBT or the coldcast from FP. Probably the BKBT seeing as how FP has never answered any of my PM's regarding any of his stuff... Ever...

What about my prices though? Think they are too high, just about right, or...?

I think you just need to consider the actual cost of the helmet, price of paint and extra add ons. Plus, the hours spent working on it. I think somewhere (my guess though) between $200-250 is right.

I also see the stuff with the correct price sit and never get sold. There have been a couple of other good helmets, one of them a cold-cast that sat at $250 and never got any higher.

Seems like the ones that start a little lower, but put a reserve on it jump high really quick, and go for crazy money. Just my observation. If that's one of the $99 helmets, I'd start at $150-175. If that's too low put a reserve on it. Just my opinion. Helmet is nicely done though, it turned out well, good job. You'll love your BKBT.

With the bucket, BM Visor, and BKBT RF post, its $150 in parts alone. Then tack on what I paid for paint (and shipping on the paint - darn Krylon Ocean Blue. lol.), 1/8 stripping, screen, painters tape, sand paper, Bondo, glue, etc., it really adds up fast. $175 would be way too low. With my luck, one person would bid at that, and then it'd never go up and I'd actually LOSE money on it. Know what I mean?

    EDIT-

Ah... Nevermind... I just saw what you said about a reserve. To tell the truth, I don't even know how to set a reserve. I've never even seen the option there. This is only my third listing on eBay, I usually just sell my stuff on forums like this.

    EDIT2-

I lowered my BIN to $300, but left my opening bid where it was, because I still couldn't find the option to set a reserve. I guess it doesn't really matter though, since I won't take less than $250 for it anyway. :P

Re: Devil's Protocol Jango Mystery Helmet Conversion And Progress

Gah... One day and a few hours left... I'm getting nervous because it has 5 watchers, and I'm getting cold feet about selling now. Most of my costume will be here this up coming week, and I'd almost rather keep it so I have it. I was gonna put a few bucks of the loot toward my BKBT, but at this point, I'd kinda like to have them both instead of swapping out. Is it odd that I'm hoping that it DOESN'T sell? lol...

    EDIT-

    And on a different note:

Cruzer, you still gonna hook me up with a full leather rig at tax time?

xmqn;oihg2riohg2oi44t5hjnbp54j!!!!!!!!! ****... lol... I had finally decided that I was gonna end the auction, to keep the helmet, and went to 'my eBay' and just as the page was loading, someone bought it with BIN.

I guess I'll be PM'ing BKBT soon... Just gotta work out the Xmas budget with the wifey first.

This just means you'll make just an even better helm out of the BKBT.

On a side note, I like how you made an esb boba out of a jango and a jango out of a boba.
