    Cruzer Jango leg armor project--revisited

Hey guys, over the last month or so I've gotten a few PMs about shin armor. So, I've decided to revisit this project in hopes of getting something made up that's worthy of molding and can help meet member's needs here.

So my first question is...what height should the shin armor be?... 8", 8.5", 9" . Idealy, I'd like to scale the shin armor for someone in the 5'9"-5'10" range so that with minimal work it could be trimmed down if necessary.

Let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

My scaling according to pouch size, the westars, and the standup (reduced by the amount that it has been oversized) is that the middle triangle of the shin should be approximately 9" tall. Although in some measurements it goes down to about 8.5".

I think anything to fit someone 5' 10" would be sweet. It's a pretty average height i think. I am very excited to see what you come up with. Definitely in for a set! I think anywhere between 8 and 8.5 would be ideal.

Here, let me show you what I did. I laid my MR westars out next to a ruler and on a piece of paper, with 1" marks. I then scaled the westars in several pictures and overlaid them. I did a couple of other pics, but didn't save them.

Well, if you honestly think you'll be pumping these out by this summer and will be providing them to members in need, then I don't need to spend time on revisiting this project. I was just stepping up to do it because of BKBT's break and to meet the need here. So, sweet, I can do something else!

I'm not sure if it will happen this summer at all, or if we'll have them for sale purposes.

Yeah, Cruzer. I don't think I've sent you enough money yet. :P Make them, please! However, this time I'll go for the extra shipping. I'm totally craving the gauntlets and holsters! Oh, and just to throw an off-topic thing in here, if you do a backplate run near the time you do the shin run I'll opt to save a little shipping .

Ok. In that case I'll make em. I just didn't want to have to come up with a second runner up to Turo's shins...show off!
I'll be buying the styrene this weekend and it should be cake compared to building gauntlet masters!

So then, what length is best?

I say 9 inches as the smaller folk can crop off the bottom. I personally dont know if I will buy a set as even 9 inches will not be tall enough but dude.......No offense Turo you are short!! And 8 1/2 looks perfect on you so to Lorenzo I say 9. Easier to make them smaller than bigger.

Now Lorenzo if you start felling frisky and want to build a set say 9 1/2 or 10 inches tall and sell me just the styrene parts I would be interested!

Dude, you make us sound like hobbits or something with that "small folk" talk. Those are fight'n words to a short guy! I should know, I'm only 5'7". We can't all be 6'+!

So if Turo is pushing 9.5" with his shins, is that the accepted height or should we go with 10" or more for a 5'9" scale?

Well, I'm in the 5'8" to 5'9" range, but I have shorter legs and a long torso. I'd rather have too much than too little, though.

I'm in the same range height-wise as Cruzer and Seeker and I also take offense to the "small folk" talk. We prefer the term "Temuera Accurate."

Seriously though, I think 9.5" is fine. My measurements show them to be about 9" long and 9.5" looks fine on Turo. I wouldn't go any longer than 10". One of the things I remember about seeing these in person was just how small they looked on the mannequin.

Trust me guys when I say far better shorter then taller. The world is made for thos 5'6" to 5'10". Like I said easier to trim down than add bondo to make em bigger!

And they dont call me "The worlds biggest Jango" for nothin' LOL

It was pretty funny to see Temura do a double take and look up! LOL

Thanks for the input guys. So right now, I'm thinking that 10" would be idea for most people and still leave room for trimming at the bottom if necessary. Let me know if this doesn't sound good.

What would you say is the accurate screen size? Because if we've got Turo wearing 9.5" shins, then the 8.5" or 8.75" thought previously may have been way off. I want to make them as accurate as possible, but you're right, I don't want to compromise accuracy if trimmed.

Well, according to the Westar measurements, I think the accurate size would be 9". Plus, we have this picture to go off of: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/showp...4&postcount=51

My vote is for Screen Used size.
Looking at Turos scaled pics, and using the westar as a measure, that looks to be slightly under 9.5".
Thats the length I'd want them.

And Turo, what up with that pic: Jango and Boba MIXED!!! You have Boba and Jango pouches, Boba Vest, and a Boba sidearm!!
    LOL.

With an architect's scale ruler like the one Darth Steven used and a picture of it from the matching perspective as his picture of the shin, we could probably figure out the exact measurements. Of course, if he could just tell us what he measured that'd be even better.

Well, I'm heading to the Sci-Fire shop today to specifically fabricate Jango shins, and then mold the shin armor along with my already fabricated boot armor. If I can, I'll squeeze in some thigh armor, but we'll just have to wait and see. I'll shoot some progress pics later tonight of what we were able to come up with.

Re: Cruzer Jango leg armor project--revisited

Here's how the shins currently look. The center channel is exactly 9.5" long, so the entire shin is about 10" from top to bottom. I could probably stand to concave the bottom sides (on the shorter sides) a tad, however, I'd rather they err on the wide side in order to accomodate wider or larger shins/calves, and so they don't look too tight on flightsuit legs.

Let me know of any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

The center channel should be slightly concave, if you catch what I mean. Like it should be "bowing" inward if that makes any sense. I also think the center channel is a little too wide at the top, making it taper a little too much.

Concave added, and bottoms of the outsides pulled in a tad.
Yesterday at the shop, we actually AutoCad'd the center channel at 9.5" and the front view of the entire shin from one of the Paris ref. pics, and printed out templates that were used to cut out the channels. We then did some overlay comparisons, and the center channel was pretty close. The only areas that were off a little where the sides, but after comparing side shots decided it might have been due to camara angle. I could trim off a little from the sides if people thought they were too wide...but once it's gone, it's gone!

They look great Cruzer! If they are a little wide it gives everyone the option to trim them down themselves. I like them the way they are.

Cruzer, do you just want me to get you a card for my bank account? I've sent you more money than the IRS and I don't think it's gonna end any time soon. They look awesome and I can't wait to get a set!

Re: Cruzer Jango leg armor project--revisited

Thanks guys. I may tape off about a quarter of an inch off the sides just to see how they'd look trimmed. Other than that I think I'm done with the shins.

Here's the boot armor. It's shaped to what I feel is very close in shape and size to those seen in some of the ref. pics like those below.

For now, this is all the work I can do on the leg armor project due to having to get the last gauntlet orders out. However, I have plans to start on the thighs and knees immediately after.

I appreciate any suggestions you have on making the pieces more accurate.

    Thanks,
    Cruzer

Do you think you'll have knees and shins ready to go before Comic-Con? Those are the only two pieces I'm lacking to be complete.

I'm not sure. Because the items are molded at the shop, I have to work around their schedule. All I can do is get everything ready for molding asap so this project can move as quickly as possible.

ahahah...ok, I'll put that combo away for future use.
I'll be molding the shin and boot armors this weekend if I'm at the shop again.

As for the knees, I'm undecided about what width would be best: 4.75", 5", or more? Once I know what width to go, the rest will fall into place. Oh, and we have decided to do molds for both fiberglass and Hyper-Firm rubber for the knees.

    thanks

Width in what way? I would say go on the smaller side. The size of the current knees out there seem too large, IMO.

OH OH OH OH !!!!! ME ME ME ME !!!! I want hyperfirm Jango knees. Lets start a list. I'll measure my knee width tonight and let you know what it is. I believe they were BKBT molds, if I'm not mistaken, so the scale should be good.

Alright, I decided to scrap those knees and start over. They didn't have the right shape I was looking for at the knee cap...too round and too wide. I need to find something closer to the shape seen in the cap below:

Cruzer - dont you have my mold for my knees? why dont you use them? You could always make a copy and build on to them. I know mine need to be expanded as per your picture you just posted.

I would love some hyperfirm knees.

or make me a copy and I'll build them up for you.

Thanks Seeker. I didn't want to copy your knees so I'm trying to come up with my own sculpt. However, the silicone on those molds wen't big time south, and won't even stay put on the fg jacket anymore. The latest pulls for Lewis were all wonky. If all else fails, I'll resort to them, but I'd prefer my own sculpt if possible...if possible. Plus, Fabrizio says your knee armor is not very accurate!...ohhh!

MaulFett, hyperfirm is the "catchy" name of the rubber like material that Sci-Fire makes their guns from. So basically they would be very flexible/virtually indestructable knees.

Thats cool. Can you make me a copy of my knees? I'll like to give it a shot and fix them up. That way I could make Fabrizio happy.

There is a few minor flaws in mine, but havent had a chance to get back to them. When I made mine, there were hardly any images like we have now. Even if they come out wonky send me a set. plus paypal address for shipping and services.

    thanks man.

Yeah, gotta keep Fabrizio happy...he's a big cry baby! Yesterday was his birthday.

I'll see what I can do about making two more pulls. I have to fight just to keep the silicone down the whole time in some areas.

Your backplate will go out tomorrow, so I'll have to ship the knees later.

Cool man. If it wasnt for Wizard World coming up. I would have worked on the knees I have now. I could have just worked them to Fabriozos specifications. and send them out to you to mold them up. I always wanted to redo my knees, but my fiberglass buddies have just been pretty busy with other projects.

    thanks man.

I tried PVC for mine, very hard, very light, and easy to cut, just apply a little heat to make it fit your knees and you are good to go. The battle damage looks very cool and real after painted, you can actually scar it very nicely.

It sounds like the best direction to go in here is for me to pull a copy of your knee armors and send them to you, you modify them, and then ship them off to Lewis and JB for hyperfirm molding.

This will save me a lot of time and allow me to dedicate more of it to dialing in the boot armors, constructing the thighs, modifying and molding the cod you sent me, and finishing my rubber Westar project.

    Thanks bro!

Re: Cruzer Jango leg armor project--revisited

I made them screen-sized proportionate on a size 10 set of Reinone Jango boots. So I'm guessing they'd look good up to a size 12 or so. After researching the boot armor ref. pics, I felt the boot armors were a lot smaller than what I had come to know. If you have a big shoe size, I'd say a BKBT boot armor would be best because I think they're slightly bigger.

I'll alter the pics to include some measurements.

Since the shin and boot armors are at points I'm satisfied with, I decided to now drag my thigh armor project out of the unfinished projects bin (f.y.i. the unfinished Seeker cod project is next). Here is the right thigh. I'll be finishing up the left one this week and getting them ready for molding. I still need to adjust the curvature from side to side just a tad. They will be approximately 11.25" tall along the curvature on the center line, and about 9" wide along the curvature on the center line.

Thanks guys. Here are some updates on the right thigh after I corrected the side to side curve. I'm happy with it and will start on the left one today. These are probably scaled more for people who are 5'9" and below, so I will have to make a slightly longer pair for you taller Jangos.

Re: Cruzer Jango leg armor project--revisited

Just a small update. I ditched my first thigh prototype and made entirely new masters for the thigh pieces. The second masters are made wider and taller to fit about a 5'10" person. They'll also be trimmable to fit a shorter/smaller person.

I then began noticing how the curvature of my first thigh proto had a curvature similar to the shoulder pieces. So, after toying a little with WOF's template and studying pics from the Jango Reference CD, I made a proto shoulder armor. With that, I've now decided to continue my Jango armor project to include the rest of the upper body pieces. I'll get started on this part of the project after I receive some screen-cast parts soon.

Add all of this to a pull of Seeker's Jango cod he asked me to make modifications to and gave me permission to mold and cast...and hopefully I'll have a whole set of Jango armor ready to drop into silicone by the middle of next month.

Oh, and don't let me forget to mention I'll be making a new backplate mold. And, I also ordered a gallon of special resin to hopefully produce a few sets of all this stuff in cold cast.

Thank you to everyone for their patience with this project!
