Active Hunter
As I missed out on other boot runs and none seem to be readily available for me to finish my costume I'm talking with a local bootmaker about making a replica of the original boot. The bootmaker is a trusted source that has been producing boots for 501st folks for some time, and by local I mean 20-30 minutes, starts with a "CA" and ends with "boots". Having said this is anyone who may have missed out on other opportunities interested in this possibility?
I realize there's another thread concerning a run that may or may not work out and I don't mean to detract from it, but I know that a few folks are in the same boat as I and may be interested and I want to move forward.
Update #1
I attempted contact with the POC yesterday afternoon 3/14, asking if they had taken a look at the materials provided. If I don't hear anything by Tuesday I will ask again.
***I received a response from the contact; The information is being reviewed by the design manager and an answer is forthcoming on whether they can do it or not. As soon as the POC gets the answer they will contact me.***
Update#2
I recieved a response from our POC, looks like we are a little bit closer. I also reminded them of the possibility of using the same base boot but with the different colors of white/tan;
"I wanted to give you an update on your request. I think we are going to try and do a sample pair. We are working on getting the soles for them. I am not sure of an estimate yet but as soon as I have more information for you I will be happy to let you know. Please let me know if you have any further questions I can help you with."
Update#3
I recieved another update concerning the different versions of the boot;
"Let me see what we can do... the black on black and I think the tan on tan should both be possible. The white I am unsure about....."
So, the Jango and Galactic Marines/Kashyyk Troopers may be set but the white option for the ARC/Capt. Rex may not be possible.
Update #4
From the maker
"Once the prototype is made, just about any color combination should be possible"
Update #5
The maker is waiting on the leather to be delivered for the prototype (within the next week), once it's in the boot should take approximately 2 days to complete and they will update me with info then.
Update #6
The prototype is 90% complete and is currently sitting on the rack for form. Still no word on pricing and I am waiting for the POC to get back to me on construction time after the prototype is approved.
Update #7
I received the prototype photos today, they are of the tan/tan boot combination. They are close but not as close as I would have hoped as they could not locate a sole that was exact. I am starting a question list to respond to the maker. so if you have comments please post them and I will put them on the list. I will send the comments/questions back to the maker in 48hrs., so please speak up ASAP.
Update #8
I visited the shop yeterday afternoon to discuss the boots with the POC, owner and maker. I also brought my Bed Stu's for them to examine in person and take measurements. They took several pictures and we discussed the issues with the prototype, specifically the arch and toe. They are now looking for a sole that has an arch as close as possible to what we want and believe they can find one as I explained this is the most important detail. However, if they cannot they are also exploring the option of using the soles pictured above, but with modifications to increase the arch depth and if necessary manufacture a piece to simulate the high arch that we need or even making a mold of the Bed Stu's sole for incorporation into a new boot. If the last option is the only choice it will limit the size range a bit.
They are also changing the toe from a pointed design to the box design for the next prototype. As I get more info I will post it.
FINAL UPDATE
I'm sure it is no suprise that this is the final update to this long running thread. The CA folks have not replied back with any updates or given any indications that they intend to change the boots to meet the specification that we requested in over 6 weeks. In my last e-mail and follow up visit to their shop they were waiting for their boot guy to attach sole samples that were supposed to be closer to the original, and update the toe shape. Neither of which had happened when I got there.
Sorry folks, I really thought they were going to come through on these.
