I thought I would start a new thread since my other one was sidetracked. I just want to chronicle the buildup & this is a good way to keep me on top of this project. Pic 1 shows the freshly dremmeled keyholes. Pic 2, the cut out visor, more wetsanding & spot filler. Pic 3, another coat of fresh primer. The left mandible warps in slightly beacause of the way it is sitting. This was square before I trimmed the fiberglass & I'll square it up again when I install the visor.
Sigh!.....Why BKBT? You need to quite teasing man! At least until I get mine here and get to work on it!LMAO!:thumbsup Just kidding man!

Well I haven't been able to work on my own bucket lately but Jonathan was kind enough to me this pic that I could use to show a finished helmet. This is #1 from the mold & the first one painted up. That is not real chrome but Alcad II paint. I am going to have to try this stuff out, looks fantastic!:thumbsup

Wow! that looks great! I'm amazed that is paint. I'd like to know more about the Alcad II paint. Does it spray on like that or does it need to be polished and stuff? Is it easy to find/buy?
I can get it at my hobby store but I could see smaller stores not carrying it. You have to spray it over a black base coat & I think it gets buffed after. Maybe Jonathan will see this & chime in with his paint technique.
I receive mine a few days ago and I love it! The best Jango Fett helmet out there!!!
Only a few minor adjustments, but then again it's just that part of me that wants things perfect. :b
Then the paints come. :D

I just wanted to stop by and make comment and drop you all some pics of BKBTs amazing bucket! I must concur with SEEKER and Vince you'll just have to take a bow dude! This IS the definitive JANGO bucket ever on TDH IMHO!:thumbsup
I too had to makes some adjustments ,but was not at all bothered by doing the work myself as most of us usually enjoy that to some degree! I wanted to share some thoughts and visuals of my buildup. hope thats cool Vince!
I dig this helmet for several reasons ,but the main one is that you can tell its from scratch and a high quality representation of Jango's bucket! Some have pointed out some discrepancies ,but once you hold one in your hands you come to realise that it is closer than you originally thought! (IMO of course!)
All the details are super Crisp and there are very few bubbles in BKBT's work! Best of all no seam line from the mold either! So clean up was very easy and quick!
The only draw back was a "small" warp in the left mandible and side! Once you cut the "T" out completely you'll begin to understand what I mean. Totally Fixable and not a problem once you install the Visor, but had me worried for just an instant!LOL
Once I had it all cut out and cleaned up my bondo to where I was pleased with it (yes I'm anal about my stuff too!LOL!!!TDH made me that way!:thumbsup ) I primed it and painted the entire helmt Gloss Black! I then went in and masked and painted all the Blues!Once I was done with this, Off to the Auto detailer it went to be Clear coated! It was almost ashame(not really!LOL) to drop the chrome on it as it was as Glossy as my ROTJ Vader!
Took 20 minutes to mask the Blue areas and another 10 to drop on the Alclad and off to the dryer it went! Automotive pinstripes applied too!;)
Today I installed the visor (I fixed the Warp!)and began the weathering process to step 1!
I took a clean piece of red scotchbrite and lightly started to put swirles and etching in the chrome to simulate brushed metal! It turned out sweet real quick! and am about to begin the acrylic weathering step 2! More pics to come! For those of you who asked:
Here the info on the Alclad II:
While most members here use the "rub-n-buff" products, I was just not all that happy with the results I've had ,but this doesnt mean it does'nt work thats forsure! Seeker and Mirax both have extremely good presentation with theirs to just name a couple! Alclad gives me exactly what I expect though and I can work it to my advantage! Heres how:
1) Whatever your spraying this stuff onto (Airbrush or can!) it must be a high gloss BLACK finish to achieve the chromed appearance!
2) Spray this on in thin coats! It will go through the gun fast and to do a full helmt you will require a bottle and maybe a half!
3) Let dry for 10 minutes and wipe off overspray and allow to finish drying 24 hours before handling!
Now handling is a different story in its raw chrome state! Like real chrome, finger prints do take ,but with with alClad and any good paint our oily hands will damage the finish and upon use after use will look like worn metal!
Handle the bucket gently for the first few days OR you can opt to topcoat the alclad as well,but expect some of the reflectiveness to die down some!
Alclad makes many finishes!
ie: Chrome, Polished alluminum, steel, titanium, Stainless steel,etc!
I choose chrome becuase I weather it afterwards with some scotchbrite and acrylics/water!;)pics coming!
I want to Thank Vince (BKBT) for the hard work and dedication for getting us a Killer Jango Bucket! Now we have something to rival the Awesome bobas out there! I'm going to post another thread too with alot more pics of my bucket and progress! Any questions feel free to ask or pm/email!

Ps: I think the only way to improve on this helmet is maybe the full cut out of the diamonds with clean precise edging and then a backing piece inside to give it a clean look with depth...
It tends to be a focal point for me when gazing endlessly at its georgousness!
just a thought...
PPS: when watching movie footage of Jango in action I have always believed the top pinstripe from what i have seen...
is one continuous piece running over the top of the ear-piece rather than into it?...
It seems nearly all Jango's on TDH that I've looked at run the top pinstripe into the ear piece just like the bottom one...

I am a student of mixing colors to get what I'm after! There was no way I could get these colors by using straight out of the bottle paints! Not that theres anything wrong with that, It's just my personal taste! I'm just too anal to let it alone so I used a "dull light" photo of the suit/helmet to get the correct tones and heres is the basic formula and paints!
***Please keep in mind this is MY interpretation and dead on to the pic I have. Some opinions may vary and thats A-OK with me! I got what I wanted for my suit and if you decide you like the formula feel free to have at it!;)***
I used Model Master/Testors French Blue # 2715 as the basis of the blue tone!
Now, for the ears, inner mandibles, and RF I took one bottel of the french blue and added 6 drops of Model masters BLACK and mixed thoroughly! add 3 more drops once you've mixed the initial step and your there!
Any version of black will do ,but use the same product line!(ie: model masters!) This is what I believe is a good representations of the Darker Blue!
For the upper mandible and visor line, I took a New fresh bottle of french blue and added 6 drops of white and mixed thoroughly! I then added 6 more drops once initial mix was complete and your there! Use same product line and GLOSS white to reach this step easier!
There you have it!
As for your mention of the Jangos on AOTC!
Here is a pic of the real deal and it shows the pin stripes as they run into the earpiece! There are 4 or so stunt helmets throughout the movie that were used for alot of the action scenes which may have this detail your talking about ,but I've never noticed it before and thought I'd share the pic!:jango

Ok, Jonathan has the paint covered, so I'll try to fill in the gaps when I get time. I have had a few questions about cutting the visor & keyholes. First, make some pencil lines to trim to. The visor is fairly deeply recessed so you should trim it so its sits only 1/8" back. Use a dremmel tool & a fiber reinforced cutoff wheel to do the cutting. The thin wheel will just explode & send shards flying everywhere so don't use that. Trim close to your lines & finish off with a file & sandpaper to make it smooth. The keyholes can again be cut with a dremmel tool & a spiral bit. Again, just get close to the edge & finish off with some small jeweller's files. I'll post some pics of the tools later & if anyone has some in progress shots of this procedure, feel free to post them.
How does it compare in size to the MLC? Just wondering. It looks REALLY nice. I guess what i am trying to figure out it what makes it more accurate or better looking than the MLC? I do like the fact that it seems to have thicker walls than the MLC.... LMK whoever can....

Besides the Fact that the MLC Jango was one of the first Fiberglass helmets available to us Jangos!
First Off, The MLC1 was made 10% larger than the average bucket! Number two, Compareing the mandibles and the T visor cut out dimensions are VERY different shape wise as MLC's almost comes to a point at the left and right side, The BKBT helmet has a more "ref. pic" look and dimension to it!
Thirdly, the key slots are very different as the MLC actually has an innaccurate lip on top of the key slot! not that its a bad thing as the MLC is the only one with that feature! Lastly, comparitively, the MLC "ears" are quite different than BKBTs offering! Both are Excellent buckets as I've owned a MLC Jango and I now own a BKBT bucket! Both have their advantages and dissadvantages ,but in the end I went with the BKBT for the accuracy!

Yes!, However keep in mind that the MLC is 10% larger in size compared to buckets like the MSH1 or 2! They are very roomy as the BKBT is more scale and smaller! Still much larger than a DP or Rubies and room to work your electronics in!:thumbsup

Fill the inside with some bondo and start sanding the outside. hopefully i wont reach the bondo. but thats ok.

Fixed the cheek last nite. Let me know what you guys think. Before surgery on left, then after on right. Then I compared it to the real deal. Then "Hey look! I'm number BKBT2" sweet.
Looking good. :thumbsup For anyone else doing this mod, you shouldn't need the extra bondo inside. I did the same thing last night & just barely sanded through the gelcoat on one side, leaving the fiberglass intact underneath. This won't compomise the integrity of the helmet but I would advise to go at it slowly.

Well I just finished spraying on chrome Alclad II on my helmet & I must say this is awesome paint to work with! My finish is not nearly as good as Jonathan's but I am going to dull it down a bit with fine steel wool so that won't matter. I handled it immediately after painting & didn't leave any finger prints on the finish. I am going to experiment & see how it looks after sealing it with Future floor wax before I paint the other colors. That should keep the paint from lifting when I mask off.

Well the Future floor wax worked like a charm. I airbrushed it on without thinning & with it's self levelling properties it produced a smoother finish than what I had to start with. It also did nothing reduce the sheen of the original finish.
Modellers have been using this stuff for years & it just seems to have no negatives about it. It is: non-toxic, self levelling for a smooth finish, can be applied by brush or spray, will not yellow over time, provides a tough finish (it is used on floors after all) & the optical clarity is better than anything I've used. Modellers dip aircraft canopys in it to make the plastic seem thinner when it dries.

I am impressed and inspired by all the pic in this thread so far. All show excellent craftsmanship.
I am new to bucket building, and am working my nerve up to cuting into my BKBT helmet.
One question is what are you using for the T-visor material. I want it dark, but still to be able to see through it.
And can some one show how the T-visor is attached from the inside, or how you have attached it. It seems that a firm attachment is necessary once the fiberglass connecting the front is gone.:jango
I am using a tinted acrylic for my visor. It can easily be heated in the oven & formed into the right shape. You can reheat it if you screw it up the first time. To secure it, I lke to use a low tech method & glue it in with hotmelt glue. This enables the visor to go in quickly & it can be easily removed if need be by spraying in some methyl hydrate. The methyl hydrate will break the glue bond without harming the helmet, visor or paint. Works great:thumbsup
Another quick question, is why use the chrome Alclad II , instead of the stainless, or one of the other finishes listed?
Seems like the chrome is very, almost too shinny. But does look good after the brushing with steel wool.
Here some update pics. I used smal screws & epoxy to secure the RF top to the post. This is the same way the screen used piece was done. The helmet colors are painted, just need to finish the weathering & seal everything with a final clearcoat. You can see that the finish has been toned down quite a bit & looks more like the C II ref pic posted above. That is a pretty ****** pic but it does show off shinier & looks like metal. I have bolted the ears on because I like to build things that I can take apart if need be. I countersunk & epoxied a metal bolt in the resin pieces, drilled a hole through the helmet, & used a finishing washer on the inside for a nice, clean look. More pics to follow.
Here are a couple more pics. I didn't want to glue the RF cap in place so I devised a method of attaching it with some low profile magnets & countersunk magnets in the corresponding piece on the helmet. The Rf cap just clicks neatly ijnto place & there is no danger of it coming off or loose.
A couple of post weathering pics. Just the visor & interior work left to do now.
The magnet idea on the rf cap is stunning, im going to use that on my MSH. Top finish on the helmet too

Something that I've been wondering though, is it just me, or are the eye slits in the visor area a bit too squinty? The movie helmet's visor seemed to be slightly more open... It seems like it would be an easy fix, but if nobody else sees it, then it's probably just my imagination. :)

Its not your imagination Rammage! I too felt the same way and opened mine up to match the C2 photos closer.Just used a nice big flat file and slowly got worked it into where I was satisfied with it!

I know it can be tough to choose your colours with all the reference material apperaring to by diferent shades. Lighting and flash photography can play a nightmare when trying to match colours using images we find on the computer and magazines. As for the magnets....well now your just showing off! I countersunk a bolt on the cap side, made a small aluminum bushing & it all attaches from inside with a screw. It can be tightned so it will stay in place permanently or loosened slightly so you can tilt it manually. I'm not going to bother with any electronics to make it move, I'll probably never use it.

I used Model Master french Blue #2715 for the visor area & Dupli-Color Toyota Medium Blue C8801546 straight from the can. I don't know if you can get that in your area or if it's just a Canadian brand.
Just added the pinstripe tonight. That is about it for the painting & exterior. Now to move onto the inside.

I don't own a MSH 2 but I remember Jonathan (Shunned) posting a comparison pic. This is lifted from his thread. As far as weathering, I used Burnt Umber, Black, & Rust colored acrylic craft paints, thinned them down & loosely mixed, applied with a stencil brush, dabbed with a sponge, & finally blotted with a cotton cloth. Thin coats & layered buildup works best rather than one heavy application. I sealed in the whole thing with Future floor wax airbrushed on.
I'm working on the interior now. I hotmelted in my visor. I was going to screw it in but I have to have this ready for next weekend so I just went with the tried & true method. I can always upgrade it later. I added some screen in the back to cover the keyhole slots & trimmed it in leather so the screen ends don't snag anything. I added velcro on the bottom lip & installed my custom leather gasket to finish it off. Now all I have to do is wire up a CPU fan & install the hardhat liner & I'm good to go!
absolutely incredible work.
Here are some pics of the setup I am using for ventillation. It consists of a CPU fan & guard, a push button on/off switch & 9V battery. Simple but effective.
Trim the yellow wire & plug end off (they are not needed for the switch I am using) & install the guard using the small nuts as spacers for mounting the fan.
Splice & solder the extra wire needed to place the fan & switch where you need them. I like to use heat shrink tubing for a clean installation that isn't going to give me any headaches by shorting out. I twist together all wires to add strength like a rope & again, for a clean look.
I couldn't find a receptacle for the switch so I made my own from 1/2" sintra. This is to protect the wire ends & give me a good surface for securing to the helmet. I'll be hotmelt gluing this in.
The last pic show the completed assembly ready to mount in the helmet.
when you say you "hotmelted" in your visor, what do you mean? what is the product and can you buy it at lowes?
edit: can you show a pic of where you attached your fan?
I used hotmelt glue which is a thermo plastic. You can get it in different grades? some that have some strength & stick really well & some that have less of a hold. The stuff I purchased was from Home Depot & is Arrow brand I believe & is super strong. I'll put up some pics of my completed helmet later today.
Pics of the installed fan. I hid the exposed wires in some split wire loom & glued it under the hard hat liner.
are you going to do a motorized RF?
No motorized RF for me. I had a micro motor that I just sold off. It would be cool but just adds some unecessary stuff that I don't really need. I would rather focus on other areas of my costume that require more attention.

To answer a few questions:
The visor is smoked acrylic that I heated & formed into shape. I left a little bit of a gap at the eye corners to help with venting & didn't seal up everything tight.
The gasket was made by tracing the helmet & making a pattern from that. There is a detailed thread archived here somwhere that goes into the proceedure in full.
Alot of time & effort was spent bringing this helmet to life & I'm pretty sure it will be the last one I paint up. Time to move on to other projects!

No, your eyes do not deceive you. There is a definite curvature of the mandibles. I'll have to dig up the pics that show this detail, but it is definitely there.
Thats the reason I fell in love with this helmet. Cuz of the mandibles. they look like little tusk.:D

Thanks for the compliment. My armor is vacuformed styrene. I think I only made 3 sets of this. One of my next projects will be to tweak the armor & cast it up in fiberglass. Ahhh... the upgrades never end, do they?;)
