Arena Jetpack

Mullreel

Well-Known Hunter
I have been working on my MOW arena pack. As I have been searching colors and getting things together I have spent a lot of time looking at the pics in the gallery. Now all of the color recommendations have two colors listed (I am not counting the rub-n-buff). However, as I am looking at the pics there appears to be 3 colors to me. Now maybe I have just become punch drunk looking at these things and wanting to get the colors right, but it looks like you have a very light blue on the trim and the armor pieces of the fuel tanks. Then you have a royal/regal blue on the main body. There appears to be a darker blue on the cones and the thrusters.

Am I just crazy or on to something? or both

I looked at some more pics to see the colors better. I think the cones and thrusters are the same base color but have heavy weathering on them make them appear darker. Good eyes though.

Here is some of the work I have done on this pack. I am going to try to get the color variations that I see in the pic, but who knows how I will end up.

The Royal Blue can be a royal pain. It is the only color I have routinely gotten from Rustoleum that clogs and sputters. You can see all of the drops in the pics.

I used Rub-n-Buff for all of the silver parts.

I have begun assembling the parts as well. The cones and thrusters as well as the exhaust port and the armor pieces all have to be applied.

This is about how it looked when I left for work today. There is still a lot of cleanup needed........it is definitly still a work in progress.

C+C is welcome but as I look at the pics I just posted, please know that I am aware of several of the clean up areas needed from the royal blue sputtering machine. The one cone that is on the left side of the last pic had to be repainted with the darker color blue because I dropped it while it was clamped and chipped the paint. I am going to "dust" it with the royal blue to soften the color some more.

This may end up an effort in futility but I thought what the heck I am going to try to match the pics in the gallery. The worst that could happen is that I repaint the whole thing, with nothing lost but time and bit of spray paint.

Ok I am changing the color big time. This is the first time I have had some time to just look at the colors and even with my plan to sand down to get a mix with the darker navy that is under this I don't think I will be happy. I was impatient trying to find the right colors and after seeing the one that Saint_Nasty just put up to show off I can't take these colors.

The colors will be changed........

Yeah, I'm gonna head out in about 45 minutes... You guys are all in the US, and have Paypal for the paint and shipping, right?

EDIT-

BTW, I'm not using Rub n Buff... I'm using Rustoleum Aluminum Bright Coat, which looks like this:

first off, i'm glad you liked my paint up. i've seen several people use royal blue on their arena packs and it's never looked right to me. and after countless hours staring at pics in l'expo i realized they aren't the same color. there are a few good shots in there that show an ear on the helmet and at least a cone or two of the pack. the royal blue is too... yellow, i guess, for what the jetpack looks like. even navy is a little too bright, imo. but a satin finish midnight blue might be on to something, especially once there's some weathering on it. that's what i did, and the pics do pretty much speak for themselves. and speaking of that, i'm going to upload some new pics i took of the pack yesterday in natural light. check over here, http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f28/eagcs-jango-stubby-jetpack-41058/ in just a few minutes.

I used Krylon Regal Blue Gloss on my arena pack and think the color came out nicely. I just wether the heck out of the cones and thrusters to darken them up.

I am working on changing the colors for sure. Thanks for the input SN. The Regal blue I have seen looks pretty good too so I would agree with you FettFanatic. I also found an Oxford Blue that looked closer. The royal is just too bright, and I think you may be right about the yellow content. The Navy is too dark for sure and lacks some depth that the pics in the gallery show.

Today I sanded down all of the blue with 400 grit to smooth everything out. I actually got back down to my base Navy Blue in some spots and really liked the way it looked...but it was not even close to screen accurate. It just looked well worn. I taped off a bunch but ran out of time and had to get to work. Work sux, I wish I was indepently wealthy.

And Devilstar2k2, I appreciate the offer and would take you up on it if you are able to find the colors. I have hit every paint store I can and it never ceases to amaze me how unique the colors are in Star Wars. I don't know if it is on purpose but GL seems to have colors that don't exist on earth. LOL

I'm gonna swing by Sears tomorrow... Not sure if I want a gloss or satin though. I don't like mixing finishes, just a pet peeve of mine. I might go with saint nasty's suggestion and just get midnight satin if the regal doesn't come in satin. I'd use a satin top coat, but that can change the colors sometimes. Who knows, my pack isn't even here yet anyway. Its gonna be on order for a while.

Look at what I finally found................

Hobby Lobby had both the Midight Blue and the Regal Blue. I got them both and will experiment with both and see what I get. On a side note the local Hobby Lobby had plenty of both of these colors, if you are in need and want to pay shipping I would pick them up for you and send them your way. They were 4.99 each.

I got the Midnight and some slate blue that should work. Thanks though. :)

EDIT-

Actually, I might take you up on the offer... Did you get the federal blue also?

Ah... Gotcha... Let me compare some pics and make up my mind about whether or not to use the Midnight. I might take you up on the Regal though... I'll PM later when I finally make up my mind. Decisions, decisions. =P
