who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Quote: "Sound designer Ben Burtt reveals that Fett made his first live appearance earlier than Empire. According to Burtt, the effects people brought him the costume and asked him to build in a sound effect for personal appearances and such. Burtt designed a "pinging telemetry device sound", which would be the signature sound whenever Fett was in a scene. The sound was mixed in to both films, "but usually it was lost in the music and other sounds," says Burtt, adding that it is most audible in the Empire scene in which Fett is in Slave I pursuing the Millennium Falcon through garbage, and at the end of the new Jabba scene in the Star Wars Special Edition."
So what sound could that be? Is there a sound file somewhere to be found?
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Wow, I never new about that. Hopefully someone may know more.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Wow, same here. I am going to watch that part today.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
I remember hearing it during the Millennium Falcon pursuit scene. I always thought it was just part of the electronics in the Slave 1.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Yeah.. you know, I read that somewhere too - it's in line with all the other "leitmotifs" John Williams used for the different characters. And there IS a Boba Fett leitmotif in the musical score, here is what Wikipedia writes about it:
"Boba Fett motif (Episode V). A simple bassoon melody based on a descending semitone phrase representing Boba Fett. It is played sparingly in Episode V in scenes strongly involving the bounty hunter. Some speculation exists of a secondary motif for Fett, occurring as he escorts frozen Han through the halls of Bespin. This theme heard in the horns appears in scenes unrelated to Fett which throws association into debate. It may represent a 'struggle' by the rebels to escape the Bespin city, which would qualify it as a secondary Bespin theme. Some have asserted material associated with Fett also turns up in Episode II as well, though whether the material in question bears anything more than coincidental similarity to his original motif is debatable. "
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_music
And here is what the Wookieepedia has to say about it:
Boba Fett motif (Episode V). A descending two-note bassoon phrase relating to the quiet menace of bounty hunter Boba Fett. It is played three times in Episode V (when we see Boba Fett in Vader's Starship; when he goes after the Millennium Falcon (just after the Asteroid Field sequence); and when Lando betrays his friends in Cloud City. Linked with Boba Fett's theme (Episode V).

But you know, I am one of those who completely LOVE Ben Burtt and his work and I can't remember to have read that he did some sound effects that were especially made for Boba Fett. I could be wrong though, this guy did alot of great stuff - I love his creative brain! But maybe those bassoon leitmotifs were mixed with some kind of Burtt invention..? Maybe it is there in the Musical score? I have them at home but ****.. not in the mood to listen through those records to find the exact times where these leitmotifs appear right now.
In any case, I'd LOVE that reference to where you read this, Volkerc. Sounds, Ben Burtt and Boba Fett.. isn't it just great with all these tiny details? :)
EDIT: Think I found that reference of yours, Volkerc:

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
I've been searching the web for the "telemetry ping" sound. No luck. I'm also thinking of adding some kind of muted bells , maybe felt wrapped "jingle" bells for the spur sound when I walk. The telemetry sound is heard well in ESB, but the music covers it too much to record it I think. I have an old 80's synthesizer, I wonder if can mimic those sounds and just multitrack them. Maybe a project for this weekend.
If you can get the sound, just loop it on an MP3 player, run it through some speakers on your JP.
As for the voice, it's equalized a certain way to give it that sort of AM radio sound. I was a soundguy at a local bar for a few years (as well as being a bass player) and I found some neat ways to screw with voices. If you find any small, cheap 3 band EQ, you could possibly gut it and make it part of your audio system. The sound seems to have it's midrange raised, the bass lowered, and the highs kept about in the middle.

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
well im no wiz at sound altering but if you can make it probly get a pretty penny for it lol
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
It took a bit of searching but I found the wave file for the rangefinder/pinging, I'm going to try the loop/speaker thing for my JP. Anyone else need it?
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Could you make this wave file downloadable?
Would be great!

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
So posting the link should have been the easier choice; http://www.themeworld.com/reviews/b_fett.html
It's a Winzip file and the sound is the "Boba Fett maximize" wav located in the Boba_Fett folder. A problem I just ran into though, the file is only about 2 seconds worth and for some reason my iPod (nano) will not playback the file once disconnected from the PC. It plays fine in the iTunes window but that's it??? Any suggestions from those more electronically inclined?
***Ok, it has to be converted to a AAC file for the iPod users, this can be done in your iTunes window. Then it works fine; good luck Fetts'***

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Cool!
Here is the file looped for 30 seconds and normalized for level :)

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
That sound has been around for quit a while and I guess no one put 2 and 2 together. I think it's in the BEHIND THE MAGIC CD-ROM when you move the mouse over 3PO's head. Is that where you got it?
On a side note, I never knew about the built in sounds, voice or flashlight. That's pretty neat!
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
In addition to the sounds, anyone planning on adding a smoke maker to their jet pack too? :) That would be pretty neat to see at a con.

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Yeah I have to agree with Oddball on the Hoth control room.
But if you listen to Ben Burtt in that Pre-Pro Albino Fett clip, the sound coming from Fett is sort of similar to this one, but it is more menacing. More.. industrial in a way. Sounds like one low humming sound mixed with one irregular whistling sound and some odd beep-whistley sounds over that again.

That's what I thought, too, at first, but then I went back and compared the two sounds and they are similar but not exactly the same.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
The Boba sound in the B/W video seems to be ( IMO ) a mix of the Hoth sound as a base, with 2 other tones on top that break up the monotony. I agree with that "industrial" feel too, good description.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
i been trying to find at least 2 seconds of just the tone and nada to much talking and music

ok now i was able to icolate some sound and come up with a 12 second clip anyone know how i can post it on the site to show you.......its the accual noise he has in the white fet video

ok i took the 11 second clip and looped it to about 4:33 and now im kinda sick of hearing it its not grade A+ but i was never a A+ student willing to share just send me a Pm

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
The other sound used for Boba ESB is the sound of spurs, like in the old west movies. You can hear them when Boba walks into the dining hall after the Vader reveal. An easy way to do this would be to attach little jingle bells or something similar to the ankle area of the coveralls, so when you walk, you'll hear that slight, metal jangle.

I dont know if this has been pointed out but the super trooper helmet seems to have most of the ears painted white as seen in the clip ive never seen any one do them like that you can alos see it tin the making of ESB book the left ear is white there to

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Looking for the track...does anyone have a copy of the 4:33 loop that i can get my hands on...Please PM me :thumbsup
Thanks,

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
I too would like to hear the 4:33 version. I somehow missed the old thread it originated from. :doh
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Please count me in as well if anyone out there has the 4:33 version.
...and by the way, in that pre-pro video (StarWars.com | Meet Boba Fett), I giggled when I saw Boba's nose as the rangefinder was flipped down! I guess it's a good thing Mr. Bulloch's nose is a bit stubbier!

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Very cool vid ! nice find ! I like the feature when the JP fires up ^^
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
So nobody has this loop stored in their computers anywhere?
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
It sounds kind of like the noise when Mike Teevee is scrambled and being teleported in Willy Wonka. Only because it's on TV right now and I just heard it:b
Maybe a good substitute?
YouTube - Willie Wonka - Demise of Mike Teevee
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
That's actually a sound used in lots of the old Filmation cartoon shows.
Fett's has more of a change in rythm along the lines of the probe droid transmission. Not the sound, but just rather the cadence of it.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Great video. I was laughing too when I saw the nose thing
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
So , after some work i finally recoverd that suit sounds also from that video and mixed it to an 2 min. mp3 ^^

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Ok... that bad arse!! Thanks for doing that Redarc.
Would anyone have the 'original' Fett lines from ESB without all the background noise in them?
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Thank you, RedArc! Very much appreciated!
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Thanks guys for your kind words ;-)
Since i build some sound fonds for Crystal Focus lightsaber soundboards and Blaster Core boards i have a little experience with that suff .
But you can easily make your own loops using the Sony Sound Forge programm . You only need an recorded file and some time to cut it .
Itīs for sure also possible to seperate some voice lines from the background sounds as well but i never did that !
The loop i did first was much longer before but after listening to it , a few times , i had to cut out a lot of breathing voices from the moderator and other guys in the background of that video :-(
Why heīs breathing like a wookie ? ^^

Bump for a working link from RedArc

not to derail this thread, but did your drive motor die or did you delete the drive? if it's the second one then you should try a free program called recuva, it's available on cnet. it's pretty easy to use, just make sure to click the checkbox for recovering file folders otherwise have fun going through about 120,000 unsorted files. i learned my lesson the hard way with that. check it out here: Recuva - CNET Download.com
also, i found my copy of the boba telemetry sound effect and uploaded it to soundcloud, if i clicked everything correctly it should be available for download here: https://soundcloud.com/saint_nasty/boba-suit-sound
and for anyone that may be interested, i found some generic radio chatter on youtube that could be used in a TK or TB to give an extra bit of color to the experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afnR1C7HTh8

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
The sound is great, but I don't see the purpose of this. Boba Fett has no sounds, except the working microphone and speaker (in the Supertrooper footage) and the spurs (in ESB) added later by Ben Burtt.
The Supertrooper footage has some background noise, but this might be the noise from the nearby city (the whole footage was filmed outside) and partially from the telemetry or feedback between Ben's microphone and the Supertrooper's built-in speaker.
In the Empire, the first time we see Boba Fett on the Executor's bridge, there are a lot of background sounds created by the ship's electronics, but there's no 'Boba sound'; the same goes for the Slave I cockpit scene. When Boba Fett appears at the left side of Vader, there's only the sound of the 'invisible' spurs but there's no 'Boba sound'. At the entrance to the Torture Chamber scene there's only a quiet humming noise created by the building's electronics (?), then the spurs again when they are walking to the elevator, but there's no 'Boba sound'. In the Carbon Chamber scene there are clear sounds created by the overall action and we hear again the spurs in the Hallway scene, but there's no 'Boba sound'. In the Slave I's close up scene we can hear the ship's door opening, but there's no 'Boba sound'.
I agree that this is a good addition to your suit, but there's no clear evidence that any of those sounds were directly attributed to the Boba Fett character.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
The Boba Fett's page from Wikipedia says:
Quote:
Fett's "distinctive" theme, composed by John Williams, is "not music, exactly" ... but "more of a gurgly, viola-and-bassoon thing aurally cross-pollinated with some obscure static sounds." Sound editor Ben Burtt added the sound of jangling spurs, created and performed by the Foley artist team of Robert Rutledge and Edward Steidele, to Fett's appearance in Cloud City, intending to make the character menacing and the scene reminiscent of similar gunfighter appearances in Western films.
Once again, there's no Boba sound!
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
i think it was a sound effect that was created for the costume that went on tour with darth vader before empire came out.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
If there's no sound effect for Boba (not talking about music cues), then how come I can hear it in both Empire and the ANH Special Edition? ;)
And saint, the drive motor got burned out by a power surge. The data are all still intact -- I just need to pay the extortionist fee to recover all of it.
--Jonah
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
You can hear some background noise in a couple of scenes but most of the time there isn't a specific Boba noise (or effect); especially that there are scenes where are dialogues and less music, but I still can't hear that Boba sound. And the 'weird' music and the 'some obscure static sounds' are all added later in post production, the same way as the spurs were added to give more power and myth to the character.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
I just assumed the electronic sound was Slave-1's inner workings...since the only time I hear it is when he is following the Falcon. I know for my costume, I put in three lower pitch jingle bells in the shin pockets and it gives me a nice spur sound that several people notice.

Yes there is. Matt Wood confirmed it when I spoke to him at a convention, and so did Ben Burtt in the articles.
You also need to watch and reference old VHS tapes / first releases and not the fumbled with new DVD or blu ray ****.
You can certainly have your own opinion but stating that Fett has no sound effect in his costume is like calling the two gentlemen liars.
-
Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
Those were sound effects (if any) added later in post production (like the 'invisible' spurs) and not existing sound made by the suit. That's my opinion.

Re: who installed the Boba sound in his costume?
That's true Raf, but I think this whole thread and concept is more about recreating the 'aura' of our beloved bounty hunter. The 'spurs' and this 'telemetry' sound might just add that extra something for a truly complete and immersive experience for a little kid seeing Fett at Hallowe'en or a con fan who wants to pose with Fett for a pic.
I've heard it remarked that the background sound and music is 50% of a movie-going experience. Without it, a movie just feels flat. I can't remember exactly what exhibit/tour/anecdote it was, but a lot of people remarked that when they were in the bridge set of Star Trek:TNG there was something missing... but they couldn't quite put their finger on it. It was that low-level background rumble/hum that the ship makes when you see it on TV or in the movie. It's just an extra little thing that sells the whole effect and elevates the experience to a new level.
Just my $0.02

I agree with you, but I'm talking about existing and not post production sounds. These are great effects for the suit to impress the masses, but you don't need them if you strive for accuracy... to be the silent, deadly bounty hunter.
