    TRASH CAN ARMOR! *PICS*

Here's an easy way to make your own set of chest/collar armor and shoulder bells for under $20. You will need two STERILITE plastic garbage cans (available at Wal-Mart). Get one 13 gallon and one 8 gallon. Use the 13 gal trashcan to make the chest/collar armor as well as the abdomen and center diamond pieces. Use the 8 gal trashcan to make the shoulder bells. I actually used the 8 gal trashcan for my abdomen piece because the curvature fit me better. These garbage cans are oval shaped which gives the armor the proper curve for it to fit your torso. You will need a set of armor templates for tracing onto the cans as well as a pair of needlenose pliars, tin snips, and a hobby knife. By adjusting the position of the templates on the trashcan you can achieve the proper curve on both the x and y axis for the chest armor. The pictures should be pretty self explanatory. Trace the armor onto the garbage can. Cut the pieces apart using the tin snips. LEAVE ABOUT 1 INCH OF EXCESS PLASTIC AROUND THE TRACINGS OF EACH ARMOR PIECE. Next take your hobby knife and 'score' the plastic along the tracings of the armor. After you have done this you should be able to snap away the excess plastic using the needle nose pliars and you will be left with a nice clean edge around your armor. If you have any questions PM me and I will be glad to answer them. Oh and these garbage cans are really tough so you dont have to worry about your armor cracking.

    Great!!

will they fit on ur vest? I mean, I made my armor out of cheapo plexi-glas, but to make an excellent fit, youd need to be able to fold an A4 paper around a football... if ya know what i mean, there for its impossible to make the backplate out of oen piece of plexi-glas, so myn is a 2 piece alluminium construction.

same goes for teh collar plate, I had to bend myn a little in teh center to get more of a /\ -form

great idea, think i'll try that out soem day!

could you show more pics when theyre attached to teh vest?

Here's what it looks like on the vest. The collar armor will seat more flush when I secure it to the vest. I just set the armor on the vest to show how the curvature helps it lie.

This reminds me a whole lot of phantomviper's bucket armor from last year. One question, is the trash can plastic easier to cut than a pvc bucket? My scar still hurts sometimes from working on the bucket armor.

You can cut and trim it just like ABS plastic. I've found it rather easy to cut.

What an intensely resourceful idea. That armor looks great.

My only concern would be getting paint to bond well to that type of plastic. I guess it doesn't need any paint if you go with the white mando thing.

Thanks for all the kind words, and Judz, that was a concern of mine too, but the plastic that these trashcans are made from isn't that 'slick, shiny' kind. It has a matte finish to it. I took some really fine grain sand paper and went over it once, and the paint adhered beautifully. Unfortunately I ruined my prototype set while experimenting with some vest attachment techniques.

    OK. See what you started?
Now I just need to find some templates I like (and can figure out how to print properly.) After a couple calls to some local sign makers, I was able to find a place willing to sell me some sintra for the other armor parts. (I finally started telling them it was for an art project. Then the guy became really helpful telling me how easy it was to shape when you use a heat gun.) I have a week of vacation next week, so I should have some progress pics.

    ABSOLUTLY BRILLIANT!

I think this might be the answer two my size problem. I've been having a really hard time finding armor that fits a fat guy like myself. Now...all I have to do is find a trash can that's round and wide enough.

I think, my friend you may be responcible for a new technique that will help hundreds if not thousands of fat people achieve their Mandalorian Armor Dreams.

We should call this the Dollar Technique.

Now, I just have to find templates my size.

Hey guys, thought I'd chime in here. This can idea is PURE GENIUS!

Also, if you want to paint it, and are worried about the paint holding, there is a paint brand called PLASTI-COAT. You can find it in most paint stores (Home or auto). I used it on softball helmets. YOU KNOW what a beating they can take. We used the plasti-coat primer then normal paint. It holds up great. Those helmets went 3 years before they needed touch ups. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.

    Hope I could help...

One way to get the template onto the can would be to use a spray adhesive and spray the can, then stick the armor printout on it

VERY good idea. I was trying to figure out how I could make some armor myself, and I think this will be the way for me. (Originally, I was thinking pvc pipe, depending on how heat moldable it is) but I think I'll abandon that idea and go this way. I'm hoping to have a Fett costume ready for May 19th. I just got a DP '96 off of ebay (almost had a 95, lost the auction in the last 20 seconds by $1.00). I'll post pictures of my progress when I start. (maybe next week, 'cause it is my spring break)

Oh, have any of you made the rest of the armor this way (back, leg, etc)?

Something that I think was overlooked was the lid of the trashcan. The lid on the 20 gallon one seams big enough, and curved right to be the cod piece. (well, depending on your size. I think it'll work for me)

Well the trash cans are about as thick as 1/8" Sintra. It's pretty easy (Sintra) to score a couple of times and then break off the unwanted pieces. It is also very easy to work with using boiling water. I'm using the trash can for my son's chest, collar, shoulder, and abs. But making the back plate, cod, butt, gauntlets, shin guards and parts of his jet pack out of 1/8" sintra. It's working out great! Will show pics when done.

well thats the thing, I tried boiling, but I could never get it to bend more than a little with alot of force applied. I started wearinga mask and using strait up oven burner and that works, but it takes alot of timing and skill to do well. Im going to go buy some garbage cans tomorrow I think....

Were you using 1/8" or 1/4"? I had no problems with the 1/8" sintra. If it bent wrong I just let it soak in the pan until it was flexible and went from there. If you have probs bending 1/4", make two pieces of 1/8", glue them together and then bend them at once. I did that for my son's cod piece and that was three pices glued with cyanoacrylite glue.

just to make sure Im not insane I went and got a ruler and checked, no, I do have 1/8th, I swear, a rolling boil didnt do me any good no matter how long I left the peices in, and its been two purchases of sintra that have been like that so I know it wasnt just a bad batch. Mabee god hates me, oh well, Ill find my way around it, now I just have to work on redoing my lower jango armor, as when I first did it, I used poor templates (cod peice front as the thigh guards doh!) Although, I must say, one project came out right with sintra, and that was my roman legionairre armor, full suit of it, but that =/= fett armor.

hmmm, any idea if this trash can can be adjusted using a little bit of heatgun goodness?

Go back to where you bought theSintra and make sure that is what it is. It should be the PVC based product not styrene. Kydex and Komatex is also the name brand. I used a shallow pan and not a pot for mine. Have you tried that? If all else fails, try a heat gun froma hobby store.

well, it may be because I have been trying to bend the sintra alot more than it is capable of doing from just boiling, you only do slight bending correct? because you see, I didnt know of the filler techniques until recently.

Infact, heres a pic of the new set from the can, I wouldnt reccomend it as jango armor as the slight texture it has is bad, unless you want to sand it with a very fine grain of paper. It isnt bad though.

Here it is setting on my vest

Offhand, I dont reccomend this armor for any "professional" if I can call it that, makers. It is failry flexible and light, but tough. But you cant beat it for its cheapness of money and time for costumes for offspring, and paintball/airsoft armor. SOmeone should try Bondo-ing it to see if that gives it and more integrity.

I've made gauntlets out of 1/8" sintra after boiling it in a pan. I wrapped them around a large 52 oz. cup and held it until it kept the form. You cna also tape it as suggested before.

Here's my son's trashcan armor suit. The shoulder, collar, chest and abs are made from the smaller trash can. Although I made this out of the trash can, I would use 1/8" sintra if I were to do it again. It's easier to cut out and bend.

Nice armor your son's got there!

Where do you all get the templates for the armor? I tried going a search here and found a lot of people mentioning templates is all. Can someone point me in the right direction? I want to pick up a trash can and try this out, but I dont think I stand a chance without any templates.

I actually found that you can bend the stuff with heat slightly. But because the material is so flexible already, you have to heat it quite a bit and then freeze it immediately (with ice water) in the position you want it. Letting it cool does not work all that well.

What I want to know is how Miggs got those dents in it. TELL ME!

Hey, well, this looks very awesome, cheap, and pretty good looking. A nice bundle rolled into a $20 package. Now, my question is,

What are you using to afix the armor to the colar? glue? epoxy? duct tape?

Well, truth be tooold, I kinda cheated. The collar is made of aluminum, BUT the dent that's in the chest piece, I used a dremmel without any attachments (cause I didn't have much to choose from except the ones for cutting). I just kinda went back and forth until I got a nice little dent, be careful not to overdo it though! Sure it makes the plastic a little bit "weaker," but it's not like you're going to be taking real hits on the stuff. Hope it helps. Oh, I've also heard using a heat gun works as well. Just brainstorming right now -- couldn't you super heat one of those smaller hammers with the kinda rounded ball heads (not the normal hammers w/ the flat heads) and then press it against the plastic? (shrugs) Good luck on it either way.

    Miggs

PS: I Velcro'd my collar to the vest, I'm not much for ripping armor off if I ever wanted to ugrade. (added a little double sided tape for extra security as well)

-afettfulloffdollars- I would have done that first if I had seen this thread about six months ago.... it's smart, saves money, and seems easier than cutting dang sintra and bending it. (also transporting the HUGE sheet in my car) Great idea, keep coming up with some smart and effective ways to save!!!!! =)

Just to show you can do more than chest armor with this stuff.
Had to notch the bottom and fold it over heating it so it would stick to itself so as to get a curve on it. A bit tricky to bend but can be patched up with bondo, however, bondo is reluctant to stick to this stuff so you have to sand it real good. I used superglue on the places that didn't stick and ran a line of superglue around the edges of all the bondo just in case, then sanded that smooth when it dried. The raised part I stuck on by heating both pieces, however, this makes it soft so it deformed a bit, glueing would have been better but I went the fast route.

Bolts are keyboard keys hollowed out and fillied with hotglue. I stuck a bolt in it with the nut screwed on about 1/8th of an inch and sunk it into the hot glue. Works great.
