    stormtrooperguy's rotj armor rattlecan colors

Since there seem to always be threads about paint colors for RotJ, I figured I'd create some search-fodder.

This is just what i like. This isn't "right". You might hate the results. The cans might explode, sending shrapnel into your eyes. I'm not to blame for any of that!! Enough folks have said they like my suit that I guess it's at least ok.

Personally, I think you should seek out the colors that YOU like best, rather than just trusting someone else to make the decision. It's your armor, so make it you YOU want it, not how I want it!

Also note that I'm not mentioning anything about the subtle weathering... mists of grey and brown, graphite powder, razor scratches, etc...

    This is my armor:

And here's what I used (sort of):

    Grey primer
    Metallic Silver
    Line Striping Yellow
    Spruce Green
    Hunt Club Green
    Flat black

My armor is metal, so it was already silver. Assuming you're working with something non-metal, do the standard prime and coat silver thing.

The line striping yellow is an inverted can, so you spray upside down. But it's the best match to the color that I've been able to find in a spray can.

After the yellow, I do a layer of Spruce green on the ab plate only. This is for the light scratches where the rifle stock hits the armor.

The hunt club green is the finish color, with black misted fairly heavily in some areas, as can be seen in the photos.

For the shoulders and knees, I use these:

    Line Striping Yellow
    True Orange
    Summer Squash

Line striping yellow, with misted layer orange. For the weathering on the knees, I use the summer squash for the layer between the silver and the yellow/orange.

And for the gauntlets, I revisit some colors from the helmet: black and claret wine (please excuse the bad composite here. the primer is implied )

Real simple... silver, masking, flat black then claret wine, with a bit more black misted on top.

On the note of the "subtle weathering" that I didn't get into above - don't forget that you always want to use a matte clear coat to seal it all and dull down any gloss. Satin, gloss... it doesn't matter what the finish of the paint is, as long as you have a good clear coat.

Testor's Dullcote is my favorite. I've never had a bad reaction with the paint underneath it, so that's a plus.

That being said, if you can't get the dullcote anything should do. Be careful - clear coats can mess up the paint underneath if you don't carefully follow instructions, including letting all of the layers underneath cure properly.

Also note that products change regularly... Some of these paints are 4+ years old. You might not be able to find exact matches anymore.

Another great tutorial, Brian! The pictures of the spray cans helps a ton. I remember when I first started out, it was difficult to find the right paints even with the brands and colours listed.

that's what i was thinking... knowing what the labels look like might make it easier to find things.

glad folks seem to like it!

i'll do up my ESB helmet one some time tonight.

Very cool! I use airbrush colors, but use a lot of rattle cans at work. I've come across quite a few of those cans, and they are remarkably close to the airbrush equivalents. Thanks for sharing. BTW Rustoluem, Testors, and Polly Scale all all owned by the same parent company; RPM.

How exactly do I get the color right for the shoulders? I have a can of line striping yellow already, I guess I need the summer squash as well. Can you explain more closely how you got the color right with that. I still have to find the greens for the armor, my Home Depot didn't have them.

Unfortunately, I really can't. I just mist layers of yellow and orange on top of each other until I like the way it looks.

I do everything by eye, just comparing a bunch of photos and my own perception of what the character looks like... it's not really scientific enough to give a step by step guide for.

Thanks! I may have to improvise another shade of green for the armor. I can't find the Hunt Club green. They do have Hunter green. And, they don't have the summer squash. Looks like I gotta wing it. Man I hope I don't screw this up.

hunter green is VERY different! very, very very different

they sometimes have the hunt club in small cans... if they have the little touchup cans, you might find it that way.

lowes has been known to have it as well, if you have that chain in your area.

if they only have the little cans you'll want a few of them, and you'll feel an uncomfortable pinching in your wallet. the little cans are a total scam, as it's like 1/2 the paint for 3/4 the money.

I'd say PM FettDad, he did a great job Rattlecanning his new BM Armour. When I painted my armour with rattlecan, I used Spruce Green, followed by misting and acrylic washes.

yeah, that's all it comes in. the dullcote at the end makes it all matte, no matter what paint you use

I'm done with the layers, except for the shoulders. I still can't find that orange. I need to mist on black to tone down the colors, especially the yellow. Which black should I use for that? I'm pretty pumped at how well it's turning out. Thanks for the tutorial! It helped alot.

in my opinion, black is black. i'd just use any really orange paint too... if you play with the mix of yellow and orange, you should be able to work with any commonly available orange paint.

I'm in the process of sourcing rattlecans here in Norway (you can't get Krylon or Rustoleum here), and it's a tedious process. I've found a few colors that work, but then I hit another snag... You don't get rattlecans in dull/matte finishes (other than clear, black and white). Is it the same with Krylon and Rustoleum? If so, what do you do to achieve a dull look to thre paint?

that's what the label on my can says. i used what was available at the time. they may have changed products over time... who knows?

i never intended this to be something where people would hunt to the ends of the earth to match what i did exactly. my guess is that orange is orange, and you could use whatever you can find.

that's how i usually do my projects... i use what i can get at whatever place i am at the time

It's easy to miss in the first post, but that's covered...

On the note of the "subtle weathering" that I didn't get into above - don't forget that you always want to use a matte clear coat to seal it all and dull down any gloss. it doesn't matter if the paint is glossy, as long as you finish it all off with a matte clear paint that dulls it down. but be REALLY careful. i've had the clear coat ruin the paint underneath when i've painted too fast, mixed brands, etc...

it's always good to test the reaction of paints on something other than your finished project.

one thing i've done in the past is to have a piece of plastic that i paint along side the armor. when i go to paint the next layer, i'll do it on the plastic first to see if it reacts well. not fool proof, but helpful if you don't know for sure what's going to happen. and even then there can still be problems.

Saw it now, thanks. I've got some spare ABS and sintra to test everything out on before I go for it. So we'll see how it works out.

Thanks for a good guide though!

    UPDATE:

I tried a dull clearcote, and it seems to work. Not entirely happy with the finish though, so I might see if I can find the one from Tamiya or Testors. At least this way, I might not have to get an airbrush after all (not yet at least:-)

    Thanks again!

Those colors are great! I love the weatering on the gauntlets, nice job

But the webbed belt below the ammo pouches seems a bit...too red? But other than that, the ensamble looks amazing.

So, there's a pic of the PrePro Fett that the right chest and center piece appears to be blue. Has anyone noticed this, and is that accurate? I'm doing a PrePro and was thinking of adding this touch.

Can anyone enlighten me on that?

you'd probably have better luck asking in a new thread than in an rotj paint colors thread... folks that know the pre-pro suit may not look here because they don't care about rotj.

You don't get rattlecans in dull/matte finishes (other than clear, black and white). Is it the same with Krylon and Rustoleum? If so, what do you do to achieve a dull look to thre paint?
Have you found any aswers to this yet? I might have some tips if you havent found any yet.

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj armor rattlecan colors

Hey guys, just got done painting some trash can armor . I found the hunt club green at a little country knockoff of Lowes near my house, couldn't find the right yellow though and what I got is too bright for my taste. To me though, the hunt club green is too dark (by the way I haven't added the dull coat yet so maybe that will tone it down).

But still, this is my first try at making and painting armor so I'm happy with the outcome.

oh, and I tried heating this part up to make the dent, but heated it a little too much...

But thank you very much stormtrooperguy for these tips!!

Very, very nice work. How do you make the scratched effect?

Well, what I did before painting, was just to grab a lighter and heat up the area to be bent, just enough to heat slowly the area about 6" away below the area, not too long since you will burn the area....and the whole piece if not carefull. Slow is better. Before getting "brownish", take away the lighter, and use a small screwdriver handle (or anything round for this matter) to make the dent, just big enough to make the proper sized dent.

    Hope that helps.

Re: stormtrooperguy's rotj armor rattlecan colors

Okay guys, I know this isn't even close to movie accurate, but that was a conscious decision (for the most part, a few uh-ohs ). I used the colors and methods described by Stormtrooper Guy (Thanks :thumbup) and blended with Apollo's Mandolorian tutorial . I was going for the ultra-grime and battle scared look. Used sintra. What do you think? Too many liberties taken?

I've been able to find all of the colors at my local home depot, even the hunt club green. They were even on sale! 2.97 a can.

This is AMAZING, someone needs to make a "color chart" like when you were kids... like with a coloring page. (ha ha) Has someone made a rattle can list for the jet pack?

I can't wait to get started on this project. With great information like this most of the guess work is taken out. Now I just have to find myself some armor so I can get cracking.

Hey Astro Builder! Looking good so far, but I think you could even stretch it more! I see big scarring (which is great!) but I don't see any micro scratches. taking a needle or something to scratch on some silver scratches or show skid marks or something would greatly emphasize grit and damage (in a more realistic sense).

Also, I see scorching around the edges but looks too even. I want to see variation (some patches would get more exposure in some spots of the armor than others)!

Anyway that's my two cents. Either way you did a great job!
