    Yes,yes to Russel you listen.

Guys we need someone that is real good with blueprints to do the gauntlet missle so we can all give input so it's "perfect".We finally have a willing, able machinist to do this just like we've been trying to for years,...let's not let the opportunity slip by.Believe me if I had the skills,or software to do such a complicated project I would, alas I don't .Is anyone up to the challenge?

    Maybe I can help.
I'm a newbie to TDH but I'm a HUGE STAR WARS FREAK
And so is my Brother, Who is also, an ARCHITECT.
I will call him right now.
Of course, He will need what measurements we can come up with.
I have 2 resin Missles, but I'm not at all pleased with them and they are different sizes.
If Russ can't produce them, I have three buddies who are top notch machinists. They can make anything.
Seriously, if we can gather the measurements, this could be done!
I'm willing to help in any way!
    Thanks.

    Ok Guys and Gals,
    Here's the scoop.
I talked to my brother the Architect and he said Hell Yes he would do it.
I emailed him the link to the Boba Reference cd and he said that with the software he has, all he needs is an accurate measurement of something in the photograph
like part of the missle or gauntlet and the software can figure out the rest of the measurements down to less than 1/64". I'd say that this is our chance to FINALlY have an accurate size all metal missle. And with the work that Russ has posted, I think this is a match made in heaven.
    So, What do you say?

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

Could someone at least post a photo overlay against one of the MOM photo's to see how accurate this rocket is going to be? It's going into full scale production without any scrutiny and any prototype phases. We've just waited far too long to say there is a drawing out,and it will be machined next week,...that's all I'm saying, not trying to offend. It'll only help the end product, and also in the potential for anyone to buy it.I mean if my resin rocket is more accurate, guess which one will rent space on my gauntlet

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

I know of at least two members here who have some expertise in this area, but have yet to chime in. We'd all like a metal rocket, but I wouldn't waste the effort if it isn't accurate. I'll concur what Steve said, I'd post the blueprint here first for review before you start cranking these out.

Any idea on a price range yet, Russ?

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

My brother has started working on his blueprint of the rocket. He has downloaded the pictures from the Reference Cd into his computer at work and started the scaling process. I have 2 resin rockets. 1 MB and the other I'm not sure about(bought off of ebay). The body of the MB rocket looks more accurate. I guess he can use the MB as a guide for size reference. Of course, if anyone has a better or more accurate one that can give me even one measurement off of it then it might save more time. I would post the blueprints here before it ever went into the production faze. I'm not sure where the drawings came from that russ has but I would also like to see them or a prototype before commiting to buying one. Not that I don't trust russ or his drawings, I've just gotten burned in the past and it has cost me plenty.

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

Of course I dont think anyone will commit untill looking at the finished prototype and price but I really think it is good that there is someone willing to try to make an aluminum rocket. I would suggest Russ to only make this rocket if he thinks he can make an accurate one since all of us wont change an accurate resin rocket for one that is not.

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

I have an MB,and an FP,but both are off to the painters.I know there are others out there too so maybe someone can chime in with their FP measurements. The FP is alot more accurate to take serious measurements off of for comparison to MOM photos rather than the MB,although they both look great.I just would really like to see this in more of a "discussion phase" first. It's moving a little too fast into production.Let's sit back for a bit to make sure we are all in check with the final product

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

    Just an update.
The Blueprints are coming along nicely.
The ribs on the mid section and noles on the rocket tip are being a little tricky.
We have printed out a huge stack of pics from the RCD
to help get an accurate count on the ribs.
    But it's coming along nicely.
When finished, pics will be posted, but I'd also like to send a Hard Copy to a couple of TDH members so they can look at the scale drawings in person and give feedback before it goes into production.
Any ideas on who would be the best members to send copies to?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

First off this has been around for some time now, second , it was an effort between Boba Phett and I to get this produced. This is the end result of a couple of tries on my part with Phett's plans

One of the major obstacles is price, each one of these babies were $400 to machine, unless it were possible to get them for half that I don't know what type of interest there would be. Right now, as far as Phett and I can tell, it is a pretty accurate reproduction, however without the actual part to compare it to, there is only the ref pics and various other methods to create an accurate copy. As you can see from the last picture I have been down this road before, thanks to Phett, we were able to take what was learned from the other 2 that were made previous to come up with an accurate 3rd version. I wanted it to be the most accurate piece made so far, so every part of that was scrutinized over for a period of weeks before I had a version machined. I cannot claim how accurate it is without an actual reference piece, but from ref pics and using other found parts from the suit, I will say it is VERY accurate. If anyone would like to discuss any "MAJOR" visual discrepancies let me know.

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

I have been fortunate to see all three of Fettcicle's machined missles in person, and they are top notch; better than any resin copies that I have seen. As he mentioned, they were very pricey to have made which is why I do not have one as of yet.

I would recommend sending one of your prototypes to him for comparison, and from there he can scrutinize it with Phett who lives nearby. They have both spent an extensive amount of time researching this piece of the costume.

    Re: Aluminum gauntlet missle

I've seen all three missiles of Fettcicle's and the 3rd version really nailed it (I am biased of course). The first two missiles look really good, but you could tell they were just not there yet. When I saw the third missile in person, I knew it would be tough to find something wrong. Even still, we spent hours going over it at multiple angles and couldn't find anything left to tweak on it. Fettcicle and I temporarily put the 3rd missile onto the glass FP upper gauntlet I have with my real expander and real MQ-1, it blended right in. -Mark

Man am I glad to see "fettcicle",and "Boba Phett" since if any could tweak the gauntlet missle to perfection they could. Hopefully enough interest can be drummed up this time to get this project done once and for all and at a price that isn't cost prohibitive to most.

Well, for what it's worth, I was doing some work with someone here on the board on an machined missile and . . . . I had to let the project go as there wasn't a toolshop that would touch it for any less than $500CDN. Which . . . . I think you'll agree, is just way too much.

I guess I'll just stick with resin!

    Lookin GREAT so far!
    I'm interested in one.
My brother is still working on his blueprints (he's been on vacation with the Family), but it looks like we might not need them.
Could the ribs be done as seperate individual pieces and
then just glued on (by purchaser)?
    More like a kit?
I wouldn't have a problem with it especially if it would make the machining process easier and the finished product cost less.
I mean, after its assembled and painted and weathered, would you really be able to tell?
    Thanks for listening.

    Hi mate ,
well i will be machining the ribbed middle section. I have worked out an easy way of machining the ribs. As you can see i am doing 6 i will be keping 1 for my self but the 5 will be offerd on the board. If i get a lot of interest i will do a run of 10-20 if people want them. I will post some more pics hopefully next week. But the missiles will be finished in 2 weeks!!!!

One point that needs to be considered is that one particular missile design may not be a good fit with a particular gauntlet design. In other words, russrep's missile may look great on an FP gauntlet, but not on an MB gauntlet. Of course, this is an example only--I have no idea how a particular missile looks on a particular gauntlet.

I'm with Hammerhead. Personally, I have RA gauntlets. The "slot" where the missle attaches is different from gaunt to gaunt. With resin, it's easy to sand a little or add a little to make it fit right. With metal, if it don't fit, you are out a lot of scratch or you have to cut and drastically mod the gauntlets, which some may not be willing to do. Plus, how much do they weigh?

ive got russes alu darts and they dont weigh much.... and look realy good.

i designed the templates for him and the ribbed part will have 2 treaded slots for screws, so the alu missle will be fixed the gaunt by screws.

Russ - are you making the front cone part in brass or alu?

Hi Neil the cone will be machined from Brass or copper prob brass as its easier to machine. I will drill the 2 holes that Neil is talking about 4mm thread on Neils plans . I will make that the last stage of the job just in case some people want a different taped hole. Any questions or if i have missed some thing please email me cambareng@hotmail.com

Re: UP DATE. RussRep's aluminum gauntlet missle project

Jango_Wes makes a good point, in terms of the fit of the missile in the gauntlet "cradle." However, the overall appearance needs to be considered as well. An RA, MB or FP gauntlet may each have slightly varying overall length or other geometric characterstics that may make each of appear more or less "accurate" when paired with a particular missile.

Am I making sense? I don't want to bring this project screeching to a halt, or put fear into anyone that these metal missiles won't work with any of the available gauntlets. I am just suggesting that this aspect needs to be considered before a group of expensive metal machine missiles are made and then people are not happy because they don't "look right" with their particular gauntlet.

Hey, I want a metal missile too! And I want it to be the best, not just for me, but for everyone else, too.

Re: UP DATE. RussRep's aluminum gauntlet missle project

Again, I have to agree with Hammerhead. Don't get me wrong, I think the missle looks INCREDIBLE! No 2 ways about it.
Kudos on the work. If the base of the missle that fits in the missle cradle is too big, you tighten up on the screws to attach it, you could split the gaunt. And, like stated before, due to different sizes of gauntlets, the missle on one may look ill-porportioned on another. Again, it's great work and a great idea, but you should try to get dimensions of the different gauntlets and try to get one missle size that will look and fit in all.

I don't think we could as for much more at this point. Thanks, russrep.

One thing that might help here is if we could compare an actual finished missile with several versions of the gauntlets. I myself don't have any gauntlets (yet), but I know that others do, as they've mentioned in the posts above.

Re: UP DATE. RussRep's aluminum gauntlet missle project

Some good points on the metal missle "fit" to specific gauntlets. However the goal has always been to get as accurate a missle as can be had and unfortunately there may need to be mods made to accomodate the missle.Since we know of the most accurate gauntlets that have been made I do believe that this missle will fit nicely into those.Other makers of gauntlets aren't that far off in general size that a missle fit should make or break the look of the setup. Some basic measurements should suffice before getting one ie. length,width.........am I right?

    Looking good, RussRep.

FYI--When you post an image, you might want to leave out any spaces in the filename. Some browsers (Netscape) may not be able to display an image with spaces in the filename. You might consider using an underscore "_" or dash "-" instead of a space.

Can you show a pic of the finished one and show us how it attaches to the gaunt? I don't see a "base" on it like the resin ones.

Re: UP DATE.RussRep's aluminum gauntlet missle project RIBS

I can't tell by looking at your pics, Russ, but did you make the ribbing go all the way around the missle? If so, you did more work that necessary. There should only be six ribs total without any on the bottom section.

bobafettish, I thought I understood the design of the ribs, but maybe I don't. What do you mean when you say,

"There should only be six ribs total without any on the bottom section." ??

Re: .RussRep's aluminum gauntlet missle project CONE BEING DONE

The only visible ribs on the ROTJ MoM exhibit are the six on top. If you look closely, the bottom (underside) of the rocket is smooth, to make it easier to glue/screw onto the gauntlet.

So by grooving the entire thing, Russ, you did more work than really needed. But what GREAT work it is!

Actually, it appears there are two wider ribs at the sides of the bottom, as shown in the above photo, but the absolute bottom appears to be flat with no ribs. I'll dig up the pics.

Hi mate i have done the ribs all the way round. But i still have not drilled or tapped any holes for you to attach. I was going to put 4mm tapped holes but i am going to wait and see what people want . For 1 missile shipped will be $174 . I've machined 6 which 2 are sold so i have 4 left. If you are in UK Total price P+P is £105. The missiles will be finished in 3-4 days i will be doing a first come first serve basis, I also will be starting other batch of 6 missiles in a few weeks. Any questions please get in touch.

Looks great Russ! Any chance you could give us the length of the missle? It might help to see where you arrived at for some of us trying to fit it in our gauntlets.

Also, will you be making these for a while?

Hi again all I have finished the Missiles to day. Here are some pics. I have 3 left but i will be starting other batch of 6 in the next week or so . I am going to put up a list so if you miss out on this 6 and are interested in getting 1 just add your name to the list. Because if there is a lot of people wanting 1 I will machine more than 6.

Russ, I'm VERY interested in one of your missiles, but I don't have the funds at the moment.

Anyhow, I wanted to pose this question. If you modified your design to remove some of the ribs on the bottom (as suggested above), would this potentially reduce the cost due to the reduced machining? Just a thought!

Keep up the great work, Russ!

Another question...is it me or is the end nozzle/thingie/doohickey too big in reference to the rest of the piece? It looks a little out of proportion...

    It might be just me...

Russ - I agree with the "BatNinja" there that says the end tip appears too LARGE. This is why I asked when I emailed you.... It almost appears 2x as large as it should be.

UKScout - I have also emailed you a question about how you plan to attach your missile to your gauntlet? ANYONE WHO IS PURCHASING A MISSILE, feel free to PM me as I am trying to decide if I need Russ to drill holes to attach this......

    ANYONE??

Russ - perhaps you could make a "end-nozzle-tip" version that is smaller for those of us who have references for such? (yes, I did receive your email and thank you.) Since you are having all the pieces screw together, you could have the person chose which tip they preferred....
