    My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts-Updated w/pics

After looking at the 5x5 sheet of sintra in my garage for the last four months, and looking over the WOF templates for at least the 100th time, I decided to dive into scratch building my gauntlets. Anyway, this is the first time I have scratch built anything (costume wise anyway). I am off to a slow start and only have the curve templates cut out as well as the bottom inner and bottom outer portions of the left gaunt cut out. One or two pics are pending tomorrow.

Now comes my first question. It looks like the curve templates , upper and lower, actually come is two parts. On piece for the forward part of the gaunt and the other pieces for the rear part of the gaunt. Is that the case or am I smoking crack? Rest assured, this is the first of what will probably be many questions during this build. I will endeavor to post as many WIP pics as possible or at least as many as command staff here will tolerate. I'll try to upload the pics tomorrow. Wish me luck on my build.8)

    Hey FS...

If I understand yoru question -
Lets take the lower clams first, they have 2 parts/layers... the outer has the square cut-outs and the inner not. Glue these 2 together (I used spray adhesive) but your choice.
Then there should be some cresent peices (large and smaller) I cut these from 2mm Foamex (Sintra) and are then glues onto the upper and lower edges to give the 'appearance' of thicker gauntlets... Hope that helps?

See below: Pic taken during my build from the template thread, it shows the cresent peice at the ends.

Re: My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts

Thanks for the pics mate. That will come in handy. Is that a pic of the left or right gaunt? I'm kinda confused about the indentations on the outer clamshell.......do they go on the gaunt towards the center of the body or away from the body? Does that question even make sense? I was looking at the curve templates and wondering how you use those to form the inner and outer clamshells? Do you glue the inner and outer clamshell pieces together and then shape them or shape them and then glue them together?

Re: My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts

    Hey bud,
The templates should state which is which but the lower clam with the x4 cut-outs is the 'right' and the one with the x3 is the 'left...

If you look in the Gauntlet template thread it should have loads of pics that I prototyped for you to go against?

I know what you're thinking.....this is the crappiest WIP thread ever started. Its bee days since he posted anything new and........no pics. Well let me start off by saying that despite the fact that the WOF templates are awesome, I am having some trouble with my little project. Most of the problems are due to the fact that the sintra I am using is very thick, 2-3 mm. makes it interesting when your trying to fit all the pieces together. Couple that with the fact that I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have mad some progress but am hesitant to post some pics since I've seen such outstanding work on other threads......I have Adam Sandler's voice ringing in my head (No, they're all gonna laugh at you). I will attempt to post some WIP pics sometime today.

A day late, but here are a few progress pics................such as they are.

Hopefully you see what I mean about the thickness of the sintra that I am working with.

Re: My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts

Because I wasn't happy with the quality of the work up to this point, I scrapped the gaunt and bought some thinner sintra, about 1 MM thick., This should be much easier to work with...............Back to the drawing board. Updated pics to come in a few days. I still might use the thick sintra I have left to make my jet pack..........

    Keep it up bruv...
The thinner material should work better for you, and the 3mm is perfect for the JP.

the 3mm would work better for the clam parts... while the 1mm would be good for the rest of the gauntlet..

Re: My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts

I didn't actually throw it away. I still have everything I cut out, just decided not to use it. Not sure what i'm going to do with it yet. Might keep the thick piece of the inner clamshell to use on my second attempt. If I decide to completely get rid of it, Sgt. Skirata, you will be the first one I contact.

I almost have the top part of the left gaunt built again. Have both parts to the loweer clamshell cut out, but i'm still having trouble forming it. Used boiling water, which didn't seem to work and it cools off too quickly when I put it in the oven. Can anyone enlighten me on the best way to form the clamshell parts?

I don't have a heat gun of my own, but I can borrow one.

I have the top half of the left gaunt built. Now comes the really tedious part.........bondo, sand, bondo, sand. Here are some updated pics.......

Not too bad, I think.....seeing as how this is my very first scratch build ever. Looks a bit rough, but some bondo and a little elbow grease should do the trick. Any input would be great.

Yeah, I agree with Mojo here, you're doing well.. Still, you have easier route on smoothing those than I will. My gauntlets are rusting away, waiting me to weld them.. THEN it is bondo & sanding... Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the encouraging words. I traced the pieces for the right gaunt today and will probably get them cut out over the next week in my spare (yeah right!!!!!!!!) time.

It's about time to resurrect this dead thread with some fresh and updated pics. I have all four gaunt pieces together, the gaps filled and most of it rough sanded. I'll let the pics say the rest. I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out...........Any criticism/input would be great. Thanks in advance.

Re: My very first scratch build....WOF gaunts

Afraid I don't have very much progress to report but here is what i do have. The left gaunt is painted silver and ready for the final paint and accessories. I will search the forum for the proper color to use on the gauntlets unless someone wants to save me the trouble and post it here.

I need to paint the flamethrower, rockets etc and then they will be ready to attach. I also need to get a hinge for the inside of the gaunt. Any guidance on where to pick up a suitable hinge would be great. Also, is the head of the rocket brass colored or copper colored? thanks..........now on to the pics.

Will, those have come a long way!! Awesome work I believe the rocket tip is copper colored. I used the spruce green in a rattlecan misted with some black just like on my armor. Again, awesome job bro. I need to come over sometime and check em out. Jason

Did you still use the 3mm sintra for the build or did you switch to the 1mm. Looks great by the way.

I switched to the 1mm sintra. Worked much better. I'll use the 3mm for my jet pack.........I think. Thanks for the compliment. I knew they were going to be a lot of work, but they are taking longer than I thought.

    3X3 sheet of pvc 1mm foam board from FedEx-Kinkos - $25
1 can of Krylon silver metallic - $4.50
2 tubes of Testors contour putty - $2.50 each
2oz bottle of gap filling CA glue - $4.00

I used a little bondo plus I already had a 5X5 sheet of 3mm foam board that I bought some time ago. Bought it from a garrison-mate and I can't remember how much I paid for it. All prices are approximations.
