MOW New ESB Gauntlet Kits Now Available

Hey Guys,

Here's the finished test model..After going back and forth I've decided to go with the original (Alumilite: urethane resin) as the casting medium for the upper sections of the gauntlets and all the component parts. The bottom sections will be vacuum-formed polystyrene. I went with the Alumilite due to it's strength, it's beautiful cured finish and more important there's no chipping! This had a tendency to happen with past fiberglass versions. The down side is my cost has tripled using the Alumilite as compared with fiberglass.

Here's a re-cap: I've created a arched, rib-like design for the upper portions of the gauntlets to help prevent them from being compressed, crushed or what have you. There's a good 3/16th of an inch of Alumilite, a little thinner where the upper portions meet the bottom portions for a cleaner look. I've completely re-designed the flame unit detail. It's larger than my previous versions. It's reinforced with 2 steel pins imbedded in the casting just like my past ESB flame units. I've added a new feature..but you've probably already figured that one out . Yeap, the lever switches..That's what the holes were for in the original photos THESE SWITCHES ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH THE KIT (please don't ask me to provide them. They're simply way to far out of my way to get). They sell for around $3.00 a piece at your local Radio Shack. I've also removed the movie version push button detail from the top of the right gauntlet and kept the cast smooth. You can mount a functional push button or lever switch here as well for an updated look. I'll provide the traditional movie accurate button as a separate detail along with the Kit, you can see it in the original Kit photo. I wont be including a rocket detail with this new set..There are too many beautiful metal versions around and most of you probably own one so I left that detail out.

I'm planning to do a photo tutorial of the Kit assembly very soon which should help..I'll also post the original Kit photos as well.

Hey Christian. I am curious about your approach to the flame unit. I have never seen one like this before (with switches), but I have also never seen really good shots of what it looked like in the film.

I know that you are a stickler for detail and am curious about how you came up with this design. Is it based on some new info, or is it an idealized version?

I agree with you. I've yet to see a clear broad shot of the ESB flame unit in any reference material..There have been many recreations of the flame unit for action figures and such both large and small and there definitely appears to be these raised beveled sections on the flame unit itself. I've always been curious to know if these beveled sections were functional or just a decorative detail..I just went ahead and gave them a functional purpose and to simply change things up some. I like this design..opening and closing of the valves. I'm curious what other members think..Maybe Im wrong ?

Would love to see if someone has any detail shots of these from ESB. The switches would certainly make sense from a logical standpoint, just never seen them before. Nice weathering on the flamethrowers btw!

Think that Christian said it was a modified addition if you wanted to do it, but that the movie accurate one was included in the kit.

Will you have the plate that goes behind the flamethrower? Someone did a run of those in metal once I believe, can't recall who it was however.

Thanks for your interest..I'm building the pre-paid orders as we speak..The new flame unit molds will be cured by tomorrow. I should have all orders completed and shipped out no later than the end of next week, Aug 22nd. Any new orders after that should be completed within a week from purchase.

Received my gauntlets today and the pix don't do them justice! The upper portion is much thicker than I expected. The detail is quite good and the reinforcement on the flame thrower has made it very solid. The polystyrene is thin, but will work well for keeping the weight down.
Overall it should be fun finishing them!

Here's the photo tutorial:

I'm posted about 20+ photos of the gauntlet assembly. Here are the first 10 photos. I'll describe what shown.

1. Clean all edges and grind down pour spouts before beginning.

2. Mark 4 holes evenly spaced about 1/2" from edge for your plug inserts.

3. Check markings so the inserts will be hidden behind your flame unit without being seen. One plug insert at the front will be seen.

4. Drill 4 insert holes using a 1/4" drill bit. Use a sharp bit to ensure a clean hole and prevent dragging.

5. Place your bottom section in position. Hold tightly and mark your hole inserts with a pencil.

6. Use a simple hole punch to punch a clean 1/4" hole into the bottom sections.

7. Insert your plugs inserts to check for alignment and fit.

8. Use a file to make adjustments. Be careful not to tear the bottom sections. Use light pressure.

9. Mark your plug inserts flush with the gauntlet. Remove the plug inserts and saw off the excess above your mark using a hobby saw.

10. Insert your plugs, check for flush. Do not glue.

Hey Guys,

Here's the second set of photos and instructions:

11. Remove bottom section with your loose plug inserts and put aside while you begin prep work on the upper sections of the gauntlets.

12. Mark your next set of holes for your flame unit. I'm recycling this painted flame unit. I have 2 nylon screws inserted in the back of this flame unit which will line up with the holes marked in red. Since this version flame unit is not a load bearing detail you may want to simply glue it in place without any reinforcement or nylon screws and bolts etc. I'm not using the nylon bolts along with the nylon screws attached to this flame unit, I'll be gluing it into place later due to the paint.

13. Mark your large plug detail and drill two 5/16" holes. I'll be using 1/4" wood dowels to secure this plug detail instead of metal screws. The 1/4" wood dowels will fit easily into the 5/16" pre-drilled holes.

14. I used 2 wood dowels 1/4" in diameter and a 3/8" in diameter nylon stem for the plug detail. I temporarily super glued it into place and followed up by pouring a small amount of resin over the wood dowels for a good bond. Note: pouring resin over the dowels may cause some leakage through to the finished side of your gauntlet..to prevent this from happening simply fill in the surrounding area around the plug detail with clay.

15. Mount your velcro closures. sand all areas before gluing into place.

16. Once your velcro glue is dry reinsert your bottom section with your plug inserts and begin gluing them in place. Apply a small amount of glue into the surrounding area of the hole inserts themselves. Quickly wipe away the excess.

17. Sand the surrounding area before the super glue has a chance to dry. This will work the sanding dust into the nooks & crannies mixing with the super glue to ensure a very good bond.

18. Sand all areas flush but don't over do it.

19. If any plug inserts will be seen simply fill in with carpenters wood putty. Sand clean after it's had time to dry.

20. Attach your flame unit.

Repeat this same procedure with the left gauntlet.
