    MOW ESB GAUNTLET MAGNETIC CLOSURE

hey guys, i bought some of MOW's wonderful gauntlets, and really struggled trying to incorporate his buckle closure system...so of course i talked to the wife about my frustration, and she calmly said to me..."why not just use some magnets?" so, i did some research on the rare earth magnets, the strength of the bond, sizes, etc... well, i found some at a site and ordered the 2"x1/2"x1/8" magnets, and they have a pull force of almost 13 pounds...that didnt seem like much, but let me tell ya...if you line up the long sides on the 1/8" side, the bond is so strong that you have to use pliers to pull them apart, going along the pole of the bond...of course, i can slide them and then twist to get them apart, but directly from the poles you cannot break the bond without tools... ok, i am just that weak... but seriously, when i installed these magnets in my gauntlets, i left 1/8" of a space between them when the 2 halves came together, and the bond is perfect...i can shake my arms vigorously and the gauntlets do not open, and on top of that, the gap allows for an easier pull force to open the gauntlets...i love this closure system, and by no means am i trying to undermine what Christian has accomplished with his closure system, but thought i would share what i have come up with to close the gauntlets... i did speak with Christian to make sure it was ok to post up what i did with mine... have a look....

Nice work! I love rare earth magnets! Just don't keep your credit cards in your gauntlets! They'll be wiped for sure!

yes, this works awesome! strong enough to hold the gauntlets together, but not so strong that you wouldnt be able to get them off of your arms.... i guess that wouldnt be ALL that bad... thanks for the kind words too, brother...

oh, interesting... i've been curious to try that myself. my old mow gauntlets are velcro, and i actually sent one flying while cracking a bullwhip with it on. i'd be terrified to do that with magnets.

i wonder... with that much magnet in your arm, does it actually pose a risk to people who take photos with you?

expand on that, brother...you mean someone taking a pic from a distance, or standing next to me holding the camera? or the person actually just standing next me...? why arent you concerned about my health!? just messin'... i really dont think there is as much magnetic bond there as it seems...i was able to take the pictures up close, and i believe my camera is still in working order... i know you guys would totally understand how these work if you saw them in person... trying it for yourselves, ya know, shaking your arms, pitching a baseball or throwing a football ( could happen! )...with as much motion as i predict when being dressed, i am very certain nothing will cause them to come off...someone would have to really hit my arm hard, or i would have to bump my gauntlets on just the right spot with quite a bit of force to pry the magnets apart...and even then, if they come apart slightly, the bond will bring them back pretty quick...i should learn how to do video and send you guys a link so you can see it real time...

I think STG might be talking about people with pacemakers or something like that...the magnets can cause them to fail...but with that small of magnets, you should be fine...

    good looking gauntlets btw.

ah, ok, i am with ya guys now! i will definantly keep that in mind for sure, but i think you are right...they are pretty small magnets, so it should be fine...i am no medic, so maybe i should do some research on that some to make sure i am not endagering anyone wanting to get close a personal with the Fett... are there any medics, EMT's, or the like out there that could shed some light on this?

thanks for kind words too, brother...

I like the magnet idea, I may have to go down that road one day. You should not have anything to worry about with magnet's that size, unless the magnet was in direct contact with the equipment.

thanks for the input there on safety, brother...that is the last thing i would want to happen to someone... it isnt that difficult installing these, nothing more than securing the top one, let it hang below the edge of the top half of the gauntlet, then making a spacer, 1/8", out of plastic or cardboard, and connecting the other magnet to the top magnet, marking it on the bottom half of the gauntlet, then securing it...done! make sure that if you do it, that there arent any screws already in the gauntlet...when i did my left one, my flamethrower was already installed, with the wires, so i didnt want to take the screws out in fear of messing up what i had done with the wires already...so that was tricky keeping the magnet away from the screws while the epoxy/resin cured....

It is the only one that is close, but it has 19 lbs pulling strength.

Re: MOW ESB GAUNTLET MAGNETIC CLOSURE

I have a set of Wickedbeard sheet metal gauntlets which use velcro for closures. The edges overlap each other in order for the velcro to grab. Would I be able to use these magnets the same way? I am assuming that I could merely remove all the velcro and attach one magnet to only one side of the clamshell. It should be powerful enough by itself to grab onto the other part of the clamshell. Has anyone else out there tried this?

p.s. Fett_MD, I can still see the pics. The last post was on 4/22 at 7:20 am if that helps.

hey brother, how thick is the metal on your gauntlets? i really think if they bend a little bit, you could easily attach one, maybe two of these magnets like on the top shell, and then when you put them together, they should bond with the lower half, so you wouldnt even need the magnets to bond together, just bond with the gauntlets themselves... you may need to take some of the paint off, but should be fine...

Re: MOW ESB GAUNTLET MAGNETIC CLOSURE

    Sick moves FettDad...!

I put an ABS shim in my Wickedbeard gauntlets to help me with size (I have big forearms) and also so they closed flush. I still used the velcro method though.

I'm sure that would be a better way to incorporate the magnet method so they end up flush and not overlapped...

You will have to cut away some of the foam down to the metal too so that the shim will adhere best and not pull at the foam. I used a CA glue to bond the ABS to the inside of the gaunt. I'm sure you can use a thin sheet metal as well instead of the ABS...

I'm honestly surprised this isn't more widely used. I helped a friend put together a fiberglass C-3PO costume and we used Rare Earth magnets to keep his calves and shins together in a very similar way.

I'm not sure...I'll have to measure it, but I think I know what you're getting at. Put a magnet like yours, maybe even a bit stronger, anywhere in the top half and let the metal magnetize itself, thereby making the overlapping ends snap together? I'll definitely give it a try. The magnets come in two packs, so I can experiment on placement and use both if necessary. Plus, rare earth magnets have plenty of uses, so I'm sure I find something else to do with them if I have extras.

Thats a great system you've got there. I'm thinking of trying something similar to hold my collar and backplate together. Any thoughts on wether this would work or not?

Rare earth magnets...I never would have thought of that. Very innovative. I think i'm going to consider using them for my guantlets when i get them. Thanks for the tip!
