Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Hey all!
IN light of Art's thread with the shoulder studs, let's rip apart the ESB flame thrower! As new pix seem to surface, I start to notice things I have never noticed, mostly because as Art said, people have a tendency to take what's "generally accepted" as what's "correct". Having seen a lot of machined aluminum pieces, largely based on the Marmitt Fett doll, some details seem to be blurred. Naturally all the ESB reference is fairly poor, but in light of the new HD grabs, I've notice some things. For instance, the bottom part appears to be black, with white square "buttons" The 3 wires coming out I'd believed were white, red and black. Now it looks like they might be red, white, red. The middle section has been accepted to have three "steps" however I'm now thinking two. The base plate has been acepted to be black, now I'm thinking it looks silver or white in some pics!
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
the "wires"are silver/red/silver.
the plate that holds the unit is black on the top half and white on the lower imo.

Woz just about to say that! >: :lol
Another detail is the "direction" (for lack of a better term) of the wires. I've seen many different configurations on fan-made gauntlets, which is understandable since it's darn hard to find decent pics of the actual flame unit. But they seem to lead from the upper part of the flamethrower and go diagonally downward before disappearing into the gaunt.

Correction, NOT the upper part of the back. They look even across the back.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I agree taht the backing plate is silver. I've had mine that way for years!!
D

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
There's clear evidence that it is in fact two-tone, as Volker suggests. Look at both pics I posted, the top one shows clearly the plate bottom is silver/white. The second pic shows the top edges of the plate appearing black.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Guys...there's two plates...:thumbsup
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
My plate is black with silver weathering...does thet count:lol

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Whoa, Spidey... TWO plates!?!?! Since when??? What have you got to support that? That's the first I've heard of two plates. http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Hmm...I've not heard that before??? So a smaller black one that rests right below the flame unit, then a larger silver one underneath that extends out the bottom???

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
i don't see any silver in those pics. when i compare the color on the plate to the end of the missile, the missile is silver, the plate looks as white as the white part of the gloves

Well, it looks like the same solor as the rest of the flamethrower to me???? Is the whole flamethrower white then??? Geeze, lots of silver vs white discussion lately!!!
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I think it's silver. Compare it to the white detail of the right gauntlet and they don't match up.
I don't see any evidence of a 2nd plate. If anyone has any, please let us know.
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I see sliver...man, now I have to repaint mine...:D

no the entire flamethrower is not white.
Geeze, i'm entitled to an opinion as everybody else. and to me it's white. considering that they used a black and white paint sheme on the right gauntlet, it would make sense to use the same on the left. proof me wrong if you can, if not everything remains speculation.

Cool..
another lets discuss thread!
Apart from the it's 2 plates comment on which I'd like to know more about Alex... :drool
I see as Shinobi_Fett on the 2nd block that holds the forward sections of the flamethrower looks to have 2 steps and not three (pic attached) also I agree with volkerc's comment on the colour of the wires too...
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Man, to know that thing is silver makes me wonder why so many ESB Fetts painted it black for so long.

Also, anyone have some insight into the 2 vs. 3 "steps" on the middle piece of the flamethrower?
Ok, people replied faster than I did! :D
I have this shot, but not this clear... I notice new details every time! >:O

Not really bruv, but from the pics I see a 2 stepped block?

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
The "REAL" question is, if it's a flame thrower, where is the fuel coming from without a hose or any other connections? LOL Just kidding. Great discussion so far!

Trust you to 'fuel' the fire... ;):lol

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
sorry guys...not in front of my personnal computer right now, so I can't explain this without pics really.. :doh..I will when I get home...
Basically the flame thrower itself is already mounted on a black plate (for lack of a better word), that black plate extends on the topside of the gauntlet...and sticks out, we see it all the time in most shots...it's basically one piece.
But if you look at the Black and White Kurtz photo, you will see that something makes an L shape against the inside of the Gauntlet and it's not Black, it's more toward the front of the guantlet, in the middle of the flame thrower rods and the gauntlet . (someone please post that pic:()
Well thats the Second plate and is what is flush with the Gauntlet, and is what the flame thrower sits on.. with the two pics that already have been posted it shows the White or Silver, whatever color, plate that the entire flamethrower sits on..and is seen on the screen shot Shinobi_Fett posted,,,,well that is what is making that L shape..it's the same plate..... two plates.:thumbsup
I know, not making any sense without better photos:cry.......I'll post them I promise.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
This picture... see the L shape....well thats the plate, and it runs down the side of the gauntlet and is what makes the White/ Silver plate that the Black plate of the Flame thrower sits on.....again I just pullled this pic from another thread so excuse the lack of good pics..:thumbsup

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Awesome Alex...
now we need to know the shape so we all can retrofit our FT's

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Are those more molex connectors?

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Are what molex connectors? The back part, which I previously thought silver metal, I now see is black, and does indeed look like some type of plastic electronic piece, maybe those wires coming out are really originally from it? Not too sure... Has anyone asked the original builders what it was made from?

that's kinda what I was thinking the holes pointed to/asked about were from so that makes sense.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
can't make out much in this pic, other than something is bend in a way that i haven't seen before. i have a hard time making out the 2 plates.

Could be molex connectors....but it amost looks like they are connected in the middle??? I wanna lean towards that black section in the back with the holes in it as being a single unit, but its hard to say. I have always though it was an electrical component as suggested by others. It is noticable though that the 3 silver blocks may be attached on the top. They don't seem like they sit on there very strait.

I saw that too from the pic that I posted! :?
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
yep, the silver blocks are not straight, the one in the center is pretty straight, the one to the left and the right seem to be angled at the same degree.
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
And what do we think the "tubes" are that make up the unit? there's aluminum looking ones, and then others that in some shots look copper, and other they look red. The reddish look could be from the color-corrected film version. The production still very clearly look copper, the same tone as the gauntlet missile headpiece. The screen caps in the dinner hall make those tubes look red.
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Based on the first pic Mojo posted I don't think the outer two are even close to the same angle

i have a pic were they sit at the same angle, didn't look at mojo's really:o
so maybe they were not attached that well.
tubing is red in my opinion, not copper.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
not being attached well is a good possibility, Jeremy could have bumped into something with the gauntlet during filming or dressing or it could have happened just in the packing and unpacking of the costume.

That might not be to far from the truth... during the JB Project we had to remove the inside greeblie on the gun, as once Jeremy had the helmet on and couldn't see much he rested the butt of the gun against his belt and Abe plate......chipping some paint off :doh..of coarse we repainted it before we shipped it.
Point being that there are plenty of shots were he has stuff on wrong, knees upside down, or gauntlet about to come off... so I'm sure there was some minor damage on certain parts from scene to scene or from photo shoot to photo shoot. :thumbsup

I wonder if that could account for any of the "weathering" on the ab plate?
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Wow, this post gets interesting everyday...
once the smoke clears I wonder if we'll all be wanting a new and improved
FT run:?

that's exactly what that is..... and just an FYI, any shot you see of a Fett with a "Closed" left fist holding the gun.......that's Jeremy.;)
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
how do you mean a closed fist holding the gun?

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
talking about weathering and grime...i think that rather large gray aera on the inside of the left gauntlet came from the way he holds the webley. makes me wonder if the green rubbed off down to the primer or if paint from the webley rubbed off to the gauntlet...what's your opinion?
and are there better pics of the "2 plates" something more in focus?
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I think that it would be more the green down to the primer rather than the Webley onto the gaunt, I mean the real deal is metal (natural colour for the Webley) :)
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I was under the impression that the real deal was a resin casting, or was that just the ROTJ?
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
As I understand, the ESB gun was an actual Webley, the studio had it on loan and had to give it back. The ROTJ gun is a casting of the original.
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
This is my understanding... therefore the weathering is the green worn down to the primer?
On a side note.. if this to be true then the ESB ab plate is also layered with the olive green beneath the darker (as the stock would wear/chip on the paint surface)
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
i think you are right mojo that the green wore off, however i think the webley might have received some paint as well, i think i noticed some pretty dull spots on the scope, so if they maybe added some easy to clean off paint, it could have worn off as well,...right? but who know, i'm just guessing here. and they used the real thing during esb, and had to return it. as mr. bulloch stated before, they used a weapon that could fire blanks...

Maybe ;)... I'll show you mine if you show me yours ...8)...cough cough, sidearm.

Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
Well, does this topic deserve a sticky? Or not until there's something more conclusive to go to?
-
Re: Let's start an "Official" Flamethrower thread
I know I'm new here and could be wrong, but the 3 tubes of the flamethrower near the back look to me like they are shaped like CO2 bottles for pellet guns or even the Microwelder used by the Jawas.
Does it look that way to anyone else?
Scott
