Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
Hey guys...
Got an interesting Conundrum for you guys here, and its really doing my head in. Ive decided to attach my armour via the bolt method from Bobamakers tutorial, and bolting the collar onto the vest, and also bolting the backplate onto the collar, for the cape etc....
Heres the problem.. how would i get into it? if the collar and backplate are bolted to eachother and the vest via the shoulder studs, how would i get the vest on in the first place, let alone do up the velcro at the back, or thread the harness buckles through the backplate to attach the jet pack onto the harness...
the only solution i can think of is only have one bolt go through for the cape, and to use it as a swivel hinge and swing it around to the right side after velcro sealing the back and threading the harness clips through, to lock into the right collar.. but how would i go about locking it into that collar?
If anyone can ease my headache on this that would be great... :) or even offer ideas that dont involve replacing the bolt method to velcro lol... :P i was thinking of snaps for the backplate attachment, but i want it more secure and flush with the collar as well...

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
Ok, I hope I am reading this right... Are you saying you are bolting the backplate to the neck plate? If that is the case, it is simple, the studs pose as the nuts and you simply screw them on and off when you put them on. BM's armor was set up that way with the bolts on the backplate that go through the holes in the neck in which you screw on the studs with the nut insert that was how he did it on a fellow garrison members.

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
The way mine works is that the studs on the shoulders are the nuts that the bolts screw into.
When I put the suit on, I get bolted in at the collar.

I think that is the general idea most have done, I've seen alot of the attachments done in that manner.

I did up a little drawing on MS paint to give a example...

saxter nailed it. that's how mine goes together.

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
Ah ok, so the actual Stud threads down onto the bolt, not a nut on the underside?
And it doesnt bolt through the actual vest then either i take it? :)

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
I think most of the guys have snaps on the collar part(attached to the vest) and the back plate is attached via the bolts and in turn is held in place along w/the jet pack.

correct. the stud threads down onto the bolt, and none of it goes through the vest.
i have my collar attached to the vest at the front edge, then the back is held down just by weight.

Hey all I had the same question. My armor is not forming to my body as well as I had hoped. I was wondering if you guys can post pics of the bolting of the neck and a side picture so I can see how the weight affects how the back plate lays. This could be an answer to my problem. Thanks all so much. Cheers!

This has been giving me a headache. Where and how to attach the cape for the best effect.

Sorry about that. It came out a lot bigger than I thought it would.

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
The cape is bolted to the armor on the outer stud on top of the armor just before the stud
I think they changed the placement just in this shot to keep it out of the way during to the stunts involved in that shot. Rather than remove it completely it looks like it was attached under the back plate so that it would still be there but be out of the way.

Okay, you just confused the bejesus out of me.:?
Is it under the outer collar block or mounted seperately??:cheers

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
The cape is attached under the outer most left hand collar stud. The photo posted is a red herring.

That was a little confusing wasn't it :lol
by the "outer stud" I mean the one closest to your shoulder rather than the one closest to your neck.
If you are looking at an arial view it would be the block/stud then the cape, then the armor.

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
Thanks a million! Would you suggest placing a gromet in the cape to avoid tearing?

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
definately. I'm pretty sure there was on on the original as well. Check out art's ROTJ cape toutorial, even if you are doing ESB i'm sure there's something there that you might find interesting, if not helpful.

:o Thanks
I'm no where near an expert or as helpful as some around here just trying to do my part.

Re: Ive got a Collar/Backplate/bolt method headache...
I did mine backwards, and drilled out a bit of the stud, and glued the top of the screw (the head) into it, making it the top, and used a nut on the underside to do the connection.
I also only did that on the side with the cape. there is a grommet that the screw goes through, and its sandwiched between the collar and back plate.
on the side that opens, I glued down the studs and it opens with velcro, so i can actually suit up with very little help other than someone helping get my belts down tight.
