    Fixing snaped backplate

    Hey Guys

My kids were cleaning the garage and my eldest (soon to be sold) son lent on my armor and snapped the left top corner. Not sure on the origins of the armor as I brought it of another TAG member.

Can I reinforce the underside with fiberglass? If I rough it up really well it should work or would it be safer to go new?

my background is mostly TK armour - but when there are tears in mine (its HIPS) I tend to glue a large overlying piece of plastic on the INSIDE of the armour crossing the break/tear. Then I bring the 2 edges together. bondo over and smooth and re-paint (easier with TK I guess) if required.

piccy maybe of how bad the damage is?

    ouch that looks nasty
theoretically can use the method I descirbed above (I would use something like E6000 - strong and flexible) , followed by fibreglass re-inforcement.

if I understand boba armour - its the collar and remainder of lower part of the back plate as load that the break would be taking isnt it?

also - wot is the armour made of in the 1st place.

I would have a tendency to try a repair tbh. its a back peice, mostly covered by your JP most of the time.

more expereinced Fett heads might disagree though

    good luck mate

Use some plastic welder to glue them back together, then use some bondo to fill the seam on the outside, and then re-fiberglass the underside.

Ok. Whats bondo? it sounds like 'aladite' here.

The plate is plastic of what type not sure but I'll rough it all up and bond the two edges together and then apply some fibreglass to the undersides. Will it stick to plastic?

bondo is a generic term used by the american guys for auto body filller

bondo is an actual brand, but in the US there are also generic fillers.
in the UK we call it Isopon 38

just drop into any auto-shop and ask for body filler. if u can - ask for the easy sand version. it usually comes in 2 parts, the putty bit, and a hardener.

*** GCN - am I finally making sense in my suggestions??

Nate, Body filler I understand! Geesh you yanks! ha ha

Thanks guys. I was talking to a prop builder here who says due to the nature of the break I should source some aluminium sheet and attach it to the whole underside with glue and rivets.

I'll try and hide the rivets as much as possible.

Thanks for your patience. I'll post pics of my progress so far.
