    Hey Stormrider...

This isn't an order or a request, I just wanted to say thank you. What you're doing is just awesome, and I know that when I open my box, I'll definately be saying, "sweet." I'm sure it's way difficult right now, but dude, you're awesome, and what you're doing for Pam and Chris is just purely wonderful. I'll be glad to have my knees have FP on them. Keep up the good work, my friend!

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

    UPDATE:
First 12 orders are shipping today, well 11, rangerchets waiting on darts, but is boxed and ready to go.

The good news is the next 10 get a pm today. Going to be 'dartless' as the darts are proving difficult. If anyone in the first 10 sees this before I send pms' and wants to change to dartless thats fine. I can also do a run of just darts, for 10 shipped later on to anyone that bought knees if people would rather get the knees sooner than later.

The bad news is the reason I mention this. The molds getting tired. Its a little tacky. Its still pulling good copies, but its starting to stick. Ill probably get another 5-15 out of it. Which means ill either have to make a new mold or the run will get cut short.

I apologize for this. The silicone im using just isnt holding up, even though its almost 2x as expensive as smoothon. Im going to meet with the company today. FP has given me some ideas to extend the life, and ill be trying them today.

PM Me this morning if your in the first 20 and want to remove your dart order, and order later. Im actually going to pm the dart guys on this list right now, and ask if they want to order without the darts.

I may order some Tin cure silicone from smoothon to finish up the list, but its another $300 + 20 hours and it will be a real test for me(

Dont fret until I have spoken to alumilite today. I still have 4 gallons of rubber!

PM'ing the next 3 on the list.

Alumilite gave me oils and a new release to revitalize it. We will see what happens.

Darts are _still_ getting worked on. I hate darts. Did i mention that?

Ill try a dart pull tonight to test how well the new mold makes the masters.

If no bubbles. Ill pour 9 for new molds and get this show on the road.

I dont recall but what is in there to anchor the darts? As for Fettpride sent out the insert to place behind the dart holes to secure them...or should we use our inserts if we have them? Or is it solid rubber in those areas?

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Its solid rubber. And its as hard as car tire rubber. You cant bend that part. You should be able to anchor them in and they wont come out. You can make the area bigger with a dremel. I enlarged a set for someone by almost 4 mm, and it came out really smooth. YOu just have to be careful.

If you use a drill bit to enlarge it. Make sure its sharp and fresh, or youll leave a frayed edge.

The darts Im making will have a stepped down nub you can counter sink. to glue to.
The master is in silicone now. If it works out. ill run a couple more out, and have darts by thurs/friday

If there isn't going to be another run, I would love to take a "second". I'm sure your seconds are still top notch as I am wholly satisfied w/ the helmet interiors. If you a set w/ or w/o darts doesn't really matter. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
    And thanks for your work.

The new release agent is making it alot better. Im pretty confident ill make it through the run. I just cant 'heat' the mold anymore, which means 2 sets a night, 4 on weekends instad of 3 a night and 8 on weekends. But we will get through it

Going to be going through paypal receipts today and sending whats paid for. Unless your waiting on darts or MQ's. The MQ's are a day or so away still.

There was a (justified) concern the dents and details were washed out. At least these allow you to see the details I donno. Its wierd to open the mold and have a yellow knee looking at you.

They take a TUN of time to get the color right. Not something I find fun to do at all

These would have to be a special order. I just did them for chris really.

Wow, those did turn out nice! You would have to decide what you wanted to do in the way of weathering them with regard to the work involved in casting. I guess it comes down to the decision to do spot weathering or build it up. A balance of time and energy for both arguments.

Bout 15-20 bucks more kinda special It takes me 30 minutes of adding and stirring to get it the right color. You have to mix it FULLY each time you add a drop. Too much the rubber gets jacked up. Too little its transparent. Its a slow, tricky process.

Plus I have to buy orange and yellow dye (3 bucks worth of yellow and a dab of orange) for each pair. And if i get it wrong. well. Seconds anyone

The rotj id have to use more orange. Ive never seen a pair in person.

Also, you then cant repair the small defects in the mold at all. The seap line becomes a problem (though you can barely see it at all in yellow).

But tiny bubbles around the dart openings cant be fixed as easily either. Thats a spot that tiny bubbles happen some times. The size of a stick pin usually.

Im not trying to _discourage_ anyone. Im just trying to point out the + / -.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Heh, Heh. Told you guys they'd look amazing like that

I know that ppl don't seem to dig the whole topical thing anymore. Even though it's accurate in a lot of cases, I won't even try to debate it. BUT,
the fact is in this case, it affords the end user a virtually worry free set of knees. With a correct cast base color, light misting of weathering and silver / cream detail will take a LONG time to ever wear off because of the flex of the rubber, as opposed to a fully multi layered paint up (which will inevitably fall off after a wearing or two if you're lucky, even with a latex base.)

The whole "FP" theory from years ago was, while other's are repainting their knees weekly from the flex of the rubber, owners of these knees would have that time free for other things much more fun Never getting around to it for one reason or another was unfortunate - but Mike has shown that it is completely reasonable, and quite remarkable. Thank you brother for all your hard work

Christian (MoW) was the only maker that attempted this at some point last year I believe. I'm not exactly sure why he stopped making them. But with a refined process this could be a new standard for "trooping" applications.

    Great Job !

Thanks FP. I only dissagree that I dont think the paint will crack/peel if you use the parma paint *wink*

Im telling you, that stuff BONDS. I guess ill have to do a flexem up test and take some pics tonight.

I have some yellow I think, ill do a quick mask job for you guys. but DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE POOR JOB ON THE PAINT! OR ELSE! heh.And im gonna use a pair of 'seconds' that didnt cure well.

So youll see some bumbs in them. The good ones dont have that.

Here Here FP! Well said. When trooping in your suit you always want worry free. Its exciting to see a new element of a costume that will be exactly that.

And great job on the Yellow Stormrider! That color looks fantastic!

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Thanks evan. Its not fun And your racing the clock vs the cure

You can get it close with mixing to side a. but when you add b. it changes, and you have to adjust. and fast. so its lik e25 minutes of tinkering with the yellow/orange, mix. 5 minutes of RACING THE CLOCK.

Kinda stressfull but fun, in a rubiks cube that will cut your fingers off if you dont solve it kind of way

I think these will be more durable paint wise, as long as they use the parma paints than you believe. im gonna go do some pics though. back shortly.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

    Thanks Justin

Mike, just make sure you give a fair and unbiassed analysis - you got to do a primer coat, silver coat, and two yellow coats (one yellow, and a mist of the orange) to be fair, then of course there is the weathering That's how most paint them. That's a lot of layers for rubber. My hunch is, if you get that much paint on it (and typically ppl may not apply light mist coats as their layer, but heavier instead) that it may be too much and get the dried river bed effect when flexed. It's not so bad when rubber is used for an object like a missile, or say darts. But the knees really take a flex beating.

I agree that the silver paint coating you showed me was pretty stout. But it was an ultra thin coating too. And when torqued, you could still see the paint giving away to stress. But yes, that paint grips better than I've seen anything else.

I know what you're up to ... you just don't want to pull them in yellow because they're a pain I'd be feeling the same way, I'm just kidding with you.

Also, to streamline your process - make a recipe. Make a note of how many drops you add to part "A" before mixing. Then keep track of how many drops you add to part "B" to even it out when you're mixing (or visa versa, which ever part you're dying first). Then you know you can pre dye both part "A" and part "B" before you mix. Or even easier, dye is dye no matter which half you're putting it in. So add up all of the drops, and apply them to part "A" before you mix with "B". The outcome should be exactly the same in the end.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

The problem is yellow is 2-3 drops. No big deal. The orange is a dip with a toothpick 4 mm up, and then you keep 'rinsing off the toothpic till its the right color.

Literally i tried to do a drop today and now i have a set of 'sunkist orange' knees.

And I agree with you, your right when the paint gets that thick, it will prob crack. I didnt think about that actually. So I agree. But you did tell me to be 'biased' above, so I will. My ideas are the greatest JK

The only way I could get the colors to be mass produced is to mix the whole gallon at a time. If a wasnt clear and b wasnt dark brown, it would be a little easier, but because they are, neither really allows me to 'mix a batch' because when added together they change slightly.

So, that being said.... JANGO SILVER KNEES FOR SALE!

Haha i crack myself up. or ive been smelling too many fumes.

It looks like the karma give away will be for a set of bright orange knees. or. i could mist them light yellow! reverse weathering!

On a side note 2 things:

    1. make sure you wash the knees before you paint them. Mold release and paint dont bite well.

    2. Its raining, so im trying a test knee but I think its too humid to pull today. Ill get the ready to gos ready to go tonight but im dead in the water till the downpour stops.

    Sorry for the hold up.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

    Well, heres the parma paint.
Mind you this is a 10 minute (literally) paint job. I painted it silver. Let it dry for a couple hours. Then painted it yellow.

The unique characteristic to this paint is it DOES CRACK. But DOESNT peel. So while there are crackes while FULLY FLEXED when you let go, the paint aligns its self again.

Before I photod these, I twisted, flexed, and stood on them.

To be fair, when I test the paint, I tweak, flex, twist and bend 180 degrees.

If you did that to a regular pair of knees, youd be rebuilding them, not just painting them.

Theres still mustard around the dart area

These, with this paint, will impress you. Probably the paint mostly. The 'glob dots' on the knees are why this ones a throw away. it didnt cure properly in a couple spots because of clumps in the rubber. I replaced the rubber.

Where the paints thicker, it cracks LESS. Contrary to what I would have thought happened. theres no saying that after 8 coats it wont crack though. But id say if you used these two, then topical creme and a mist, your golden.

The 'push flat picture is further than you would ever bend these, and the other two pics were taken after.

I took another to show the 180.

remember these are untrimmed, un primed, straight out the mold knees.

    That's pretty darned impressive

I'll reserve my judgement for now Let see how they fair by this time next week. Little worried about urethane oils that may sweat. Probably ok thoough, as the black test rubber knee you left here seems to be ok.

Still, personal preference I suppose ... no paint for me, no soup for you

OK. Now. On to the next set of 5-10 PMS going out later today.

The first full list, unless we have made otehr arrangements/waiting on somethign went out today.

    Tracking/Customs forms posted.

Again, im going to a 'no darts now' list and ill offer up darts shortly. But I figured ill eat the cost of shipping twice, so you can get your knees and get working on them.

The first round should be arriving today.

    And To note.... sadly....

FP was right. The yellow does riverbed crack. It doesnt flake or peel off though. At least the cheap yellow I used did. No saying it will all crack, the silver doesnt, and it only cracks in a small section around the edges of the front where it gets really narrow. ill post a pic later.

lets face it if your knees actually managed to get into the positions that you have shown/tested, then it's off to hospital as there would not be much of your knee left!!

Yah I think if people treat them as if they could break, there wont be paint problems. Ive said all along though. Better to shoot some paint, than buy a whole new set.

Now, I HAVENT tried taking paint off these. So I dont know what paint thinner will do to them

I should probably try for everyone.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Heres the real issue. Im going to be frank with you guys.

I cant really start offering 'colored' knees now. I cant accept the returns on those that want to 'trade'. The yellow is a LOT harder to do.

Even with an increased cost of $20 I feel like I would be cheating those that already ordered, because I just cant do an exchange for people. The shipping and materials cost too much.

So, whats the fairest way to handle that? The yellow was really just a try for Chris/FP.

My only thought is to offer anyone in list 2 a chance to back out. Once the list is done do another short run of colored knees. But what if people opt out and then the run falls short?

    Your input is greatly appreciated.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Looks like knees are starting to arrive on doorsteps today. Ill be leaving tomorrow for a few days. Im gong to pm ppl tonight and I have a few pairs I can ship tomorrow.

Ill paypal the first 5. I think I have 3 that can ship. So first three to pay get them heh. The other two will be done early next week when I get back.

I hope you guys understand why im not taking all the paypals at once. This way I can keep it organized, and each group has the 3 ish days to reply, without getting bumped. If i messaged everyone the last guy to sign up might be the first to pay.

Plus I dont want to hold your money any longer than I have to before you get your stuff.

That being said, its back to the garage.

i got mine today. beautiful! i'll pick up some black caulking this weekend. the flaw in the mold is so minor that i could barely find it... i don't think i'd even bother doing anything with it on my own, but i'll try the caulking trick. i bet it will look perfect

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Glad you like them stormtrooperguy Cause I know you are a stickler for quality.

The more I looked at them, the more I thought I could have done better. I was worried everyone would get them and no one would go 'sweet'.

I actually didnt find the flaw at first. I had already pulled 5 sets before I went 'ohh thats a wierd one' then looked and they were all like that

My only other concern is they are heavier than light knees. So there will have to be a decent strap to hold them. I tried to cup the knee on the inside in a nice shape so it would hold its self up.

But as you can see. at least you wont break em

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Ok I confess, I couldn't find the flaw. I looked hard in direct and indirect sunlight. I'll try again. Beautiful, they feel completely indestructible and look incredibly sharp.

There is some heft to them, on par with fiberglass probably, more than the FP vac'ed knees I have. The great thing is unlike the vac'ed or fiber knees a tight strap won't have you worrying about breaking at all.

The screw in aluminum darts will need to be glued in, the dart area is solid so you can't screw a bolt on a screw from the inside. I'm thinking I could cut off the screw head, drill a hole in the rubber and CA glue the darts in. I don't know, rubber darts may be the way to go if they are possible.

    Great job m2!!

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Dont cut your darts just yet!

Doesnt the dart have the bolt on it?

    and a nut goes through?

You can drill into the rubber (carefully) with a drill bit thats 1/16th smaller than the bolt, and screw them in!

And you can fill the hole with gorilla glue, before you insert it, and 2 hours later, you WONT beable to rip it out.

Just dont dril in too deep.

If your bolts too long, youll have to cut _some_ of it off. but not all of it.

If its opposite where your dart has threads for a bolt from the rear, cut the head off a bolt, screw it all the way in the dart, and now you have a way to do above.

Remember to always sit and stair at something for an hour before you take action heh

EDIT I didnt fully read your post, your saying exactly what I did. but hay... its early

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Just my thoughts on this whole dart mounting situation...

But with the previous 'vac' knees you had to drill a clearance hole thro the 'back' of the resin insert that came seperate from the knee then screw the dart onto that now exposed bolt thread...

But with these new knees. once a pilot hole was drilled with a new/sharp bit then could a double ended (thread) bolt be used? you know the type that the more you tighten the dart onto it the more it would in turn tighten into the knee... therefore if you were to glue said bolt into the knee after screwing - It isn't gonna go anywhere! and the darts can be removed at will...

    Just a tought? - That's what i'd do anyway?

Exactly, but those bolts have 2 sets of threads, one going each direction. They arent easy for the average bear to find.

    But your exactly right

I took pictures of the darts and screw and never posted them, hang on...

Not the clearest image of the mounting but as you can see the existing bolt tightens right to the dart. So a new longer threaded bolt with no head would need to be measured then threaded tightly in to the dart and then threaded tightly into the small drilled hole in the rubber mount.

i'll probably cut the head off the screw on my darts, drill a hole into the knee, coat the screw with goop, shove it in and let it dry. i doubt it will ever fall off. my first knees had the darts just gooped on and i never lost one.

Another option is threaded rod you can pick up at any hardware/home improvement store. It can be bought in foot increments, so you more for anything else.

Got my knees today ! They appear to be in good order and are Definately sturdy enough to put up with the kind of abuse i'll heap upon them.

Next up.. finding a paint thats equally as sturdy

we can find the double direction bolts, but its not as easy to find good fasteners here as u would think....

I have yet to find chicago screws anywhere. the only ones I can find are he ones with the biting flare pieces on them, for doing counter top knobs..... and not in any good size. ive checked home depot, menards and a few other home improvement stores

Michaels of Oregon sells smaller chicago screws they use for slings. They are about 3/8" wide by about 1/2" long when screwed together. Also, you can try www.chicagoscrews.com, they sell them by the hundred in lots of lengths and material.

Got mine the other day. Sorry, I shoulda told you sooner.
Now the big question, how is everyone planning on attaching these things?
With my sintra knees I could just JB Weld brackets with straps through them.
Not sure how I'm going to attach straps to these.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

The attachment is going to have to be a couple things. They are a little heavier than sintra Thats for sure. I personally would create a small indention in the top center of the knee. And I would attach a snap.

This will aleviate the sliding down problem. I personally when I tested them used industrial strength velcro and super glue. I always put superglue on the industrial strength velcro. Then stick it down. Then spray through the other side with accelerator. But if you use accelerator get POLYSTYRENE SAVE CA/ACCELERATOR it doesnt get near as hot.

You could probably even use a bracket and a screws on the dart side of the knee, because the rubber is pretty hard. If you want me to experiment on a bad pull I will, but the pair I tested I used ca and velcro with firm elastric straps, and a snap.

Theers a racing yellow, and I think theres a tangerine that makes a nice overspray yellow color.

Im not a master painter. Just remember, as I posted earlier, they will crack slightly at the bends if you flex them 90 degrees, just as FP said. However theres two saving graces.

The paint doesnt peel, just crack. And if you bent other knees that far, youd be repainting new knees

I bent mine and they cracked a bit, but from 3 feet away you cant tell they have tiny cracks in the paint.
This link has some colors. The yellow is a tad orange yellow. Like corvette yellow.

    Its callec bright yellow.

    Here are some 'airbrush paints'
    http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...P?&C=RHF&V=PAC

This daytona yellow is another color ive used. I think i overmisted with the flourescent orange or competition orange on thi same page. I would do silver, and then yellow/orange (light coats if possible) and then hand paint the creme around it in a acrylic.

    That will mean less paint.

Before you dremel too much. Flatten it out on a table. like in my top pictures. And then take your exacto and drag it along. Thats the best way to get a really nice edge all the way around. The only place you should have to dremel is enlarging the dart holes, and the seep line if it bothers you.

Ok, that time is now here. The molds are starting to leave small textures on the knees. Right now they are not very telling. Only one pair has it, and you can _barely_ see it. Only in direct light.

But that means the molds going to be dead very soon. Im closing pp's now, and shipping what I have. Then ill take photos of each knee pull as it comes out and sell them individually.

If I have enough to do a set of 10 yellow special order knees, ill make another mold. If not, ill wait a few months and make another.

    Updates on availability tonight.

I have what looks like two pristine pairs of yellow knees that are un-spoke for.

They are 95 shipped us, 100 outside.

Im going to bake the mold tonight and see what shakes out.

The only two people whos knees havent shipped that have paid is fettdad and wolfie. because they are getting foam parts also that werent with me today when I shipped.

Ohh and 99 cent tacos pair from the karma thread.

If someone watns the yellow pricey knees, pm me. Otherwise they will go into the 'mike mason has too much **** laying around to make his own boba fett fund'.

I have 1 set of yellow knees on hand. I have no more sets unless your name says ready to ship. Im baking the mold, if it works, ill get about 5 more sets out of it. if not, bubye rubber knee mold. Ill make another but it wont be a rush job. Best guess? Mid november.

If you want the last pair of yellow, pm me.

    Well
    ..... Mold is dead.

The pairs I pulled today have slight slight slight creases in them.

Fettdad, Wolfie yours are the last two that arent pulled atm. Everyone else is pulled/shipped.

Im going to start on a new mold tomorrow. If things turn out well, ill have something workable by the end of the day, as long as nothing ive used in them inhibits platinum silicone. if it does, ill start the mold on monday, with a slower curing silicone, and it may be mid week before its ready to go.

When its done, im going to finish up the couple I owe and then run off only yellow and orange knees.

Im extremely dissapointed in the longevity of the silicone. And I intend to express my feelings to the company I purchased it from.

a brushable mold with a thick jacket or something.

Thats what im usin now stormy. Rebound 25. Once I get the rubber thick (im going for pretty thick ill look at if i need a 1 piece or two piece jacket.

The piece is a funny shape, so im thinking ill need to make the jacket a two piece because the dart launcher area. On the other hand, there wont be a seep line on this bad boy.

Im going to finish up the orders im on, then do a run of yellows. Im dreading it, but might as well go all the way:0

The new mold is done, the glass sleeves are close, they are drying now. If all goes well, ill make a pull tonight of the new knees. And will give info and proceed from there.

    Mason,

I rec'd the rubber knees in the mail yesterday. They are great! I'm glad to have these durable knees and toss my old crummy, frequently repaired sintra pair. I found some resin knee darts I had laying around, so I'll stick with those (change me to no darts). Thanks for all your hard work!

Awesome and yah. darts are darts unless they are aluminum darts. Then they are better cause they are aluminum.

The molds done, looks really good. Only issue at the time being is the mold needs something to be used as a stand, while I do the molding. Since its got a sleeve, it doesnt just sit on the counter.

Once I get that working, its off to the races.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

BAD NEWS! for me. Good news for you all, i spose

The brush on mold, with a shell, doesnt work right. It deforms the knees. And Thats not acceptable. So wolfie and fettdad are the last two that didnt get a set.

Im going to redo the $500 mold this week. This means that ill have to re-paint the masters and mount them tomorrow. Silicone this week, pours this weekend.

Im going to finish up the last few pairs of blacks, then move on to special order yellows and oranges. Ill start a new thread for that. So for now, Fettdad and wolfie i pm'd you guys, you have some options. Everyone else should be shipped/intransit/received by tomorrow afternoon.

It will cost me a arm and a leg, but in the end, it will be worth it.

I got home yesterday to a nice little package sitting on the front porch. These things are beautiful! I can't wait to get them painted.

Got mine, cheers Mike. Great work....and they appear to be a lot more hard wearing than I had imagined.

    Thanks.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

Great to hear everyones happy so far! Once the newmold is done, ill post pics of the new ones. If anyone wants to post pics of what they have once they are painted id love to see them.

The darts are coming, albeit slowly. The mold taking a dump really threw me for a loop. but hopefully the SE Yellows will make it worth it.

Everyone shipped today accept fettdad and wolfie. The rest on the list, ill contact you to see if you still want them as soon as I get the new mold done.

    Thanks

Sorry brother, yes they sold, But ill have more pairs of them this weekend. Once I pull the last two black, im going to do a run of just yellows. So by early next week the yellow esb or slightly orange ROTJ will be ready.

I definitely want a set, so please don't forget about me. Dart or no dart I want a set.

I intend to have more than enough sets once I finish the mold. Right now the masters are drying (primer) then ill mount them on clay tomorrow night and pour the first half of the mold. 12 hrs later, i break it apart and do the scond half the mold. Then I clean it and start pouring.

    Shouldnt be long now

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

I found some other non-cracking paint the other day.
It's made by a company called "Createx"
It's an airbrush paint but you can also apply it by using a regular hand brush(which is what I did). So far, no splitting or cracking at all.
That's good news!! The only draw back is the color selction. It looks like I'll be doing a bit of color mixing by hand to get the right shade. The yellow they offer is quite a bit brighter than I would like it to be.
And they also have a "pearlized" silver that makes a great metal look as long as you apply it directly on top of the black rubber.

Re: FettPride V3 / SR V1 Rubber Knee Signup

I was fortunate enough to get a set of the yellow knees and they are SWEET!! The flexibility and durability are worth every bit of pain Mike had to deal with, and the color is awesome! They are definately the better option when you look long term on a piece of armor that is constantly flexing when walking, bending, etcetera. Great job brother, and the fact that it was done for Chris and Pam adds a little bit more value on them.
