  1. Jun 27, 2009, 12:55 PM - Attaching armor to my vest with bolts #1

I thought id post this up if anyone was interested in using this method. Everyone that uses bolts does it a little different, so i just thought id post up how im doing it. Basically i dab a little hot glue on the head of the bolt for placement purposes.

I then position them accordingly. By doing it this way, when i add the PC-7 epoxy putty, i dont have to worry about the bolts shifting or tilting.

Then i add the PC-7 around the head of the bolt.

This has to cure for 24hrs beforei can do anything with it though but thats ok, tomorrow i will attach the armor!....ok! off to do the rest of the pieces!

I did a similar mod on mine
i used 2part epoxy to hold my bolts on
i also used bolts with a flat head
keep in mind, adding nuts 7 bolts & grommets will drastically increase the weight of your vest.
    here's mine

yea, i know, but its worth the extra weight to know the armor isnt coming off easily .

Yea, i wanted flathead screws but they didnt have any at the hardware store near hear and i figured these would work fine. I wasplanning on using eyelets or grommets in the vest to prevent tearing.I see u have washers, (or maybe they are grommets lol) if i applied washers to both sides, would that do the trick?..i have washers already and would have to go buy eyelets/grommets and the tool to apply them if i go that route. thanks brother

I have washers on mine to take up the space between the grommet and nut
i didn't want the end of the bolt protruding past the nut.
I bought my grommets at Michaels

I agree wholeheartedly about it being "worth the weight"
  5. Jun 27, 2009, 2:39 PM - Re: Attaching armor to my vest with bolts #5

yup, makes it feel more like real armor

Ah good idea to keep the nut flush with the end of the bolt, i may do that as well!

I need to get grommets though..ugh. What sucks is We sell them where i work, but we are closed till monday, and i wanted to get this armor on the vest this weekend bah! lol

Nathan, I am curious as to why you have stitch lines that seem to match the armor shapes on your vest...

Ah..great to have a tutorial on this, as I´m not far away from this point myself.

Keep the piccies coming! Step by step tutorials with loads of pics is something I like, seeing as some names for parts are REALLY different in norwegian so they´re sometimes a bit hard to find.

Those were there for the velcro that I used before the bolt method

The velcro worked fine for holding the armor in place, but it did not keep it tight against the vest all the way around.

For your bolt placement, did you just add a bolt at each angle or did place them based on reference? I can find reference for most of them, but not all, and at least one set I know there is no bolt. Would be interesting to see if we could find actual proof for all the bolt placement points.

I just stuck them on where I thought they would work.

Well, it is our understanding that all of the armor was made at the same time so all of it should have more or less the same type of attachment method. And since many of us believe one of the RotJ sets of armor IS the ESB, repainted, I believe the ESB has the bolt attachment method as well. Nothing we have seen would indicate anything else.

True, and if that does happen it's a bit more permanent attachment method.

the bolts dont protrude from the vest any more than the thickness of the nut so they dont stickout.

Just curious, (and I may be resurrecting a slightly 'necro' thread), but does anyone use chicago screws, rather than screws, nuts & washers, for chest armor attachment?
Any tips on collar/backplate, cod/kidney or knee attachment? From what I understand, the backplate & collar are attached together as one piece with the shoulder studs, and the jetpack & its straps sort of sandwiches the whole thing in place?

You know....Chicago screws might actually work better then most methods Ive seen....being the base is flat and all...and theres no screw to poke you. Never though about that.

The backplate is NOT attached how most people attach it actually....look at the ROTJ screen grabs theres a hook and loop method similar to how the jetpack hooks work. The collar attaches to the vest has hooks that attach it to the backpate. The backplate is kinda floating there. Boba Fett Return of the Jedi Costume - HD Screen Captures - The Dented Helmet Gallery

Thanks for the reply, F4R! I think I might rig up something similar to StrumFett's collar/backplate method. Now, has anyone tried attaching the knees and/or kidney & codpiece to the flightsuit with snap fasteners?
