WIP - Scratch Built RF

asok

Well-Known Hunter
My new Boba helmet came with a very bad RF and so, with the help of Alan/WoF, I am building a new one. I first got a lens from a SX-70 camera and molded it up. Next I sent a copy to Alan. After a few weeks, he email me back a nice PDF.

You can see my fist try in the back ground of the first photo.

The the 4th photo you can see the 2 lenses. The one in the back is made of wood and has the wrong angle on it. So, I mold it and then fixed that problem.

I just need to figure out how to mold the main body. It will need to be a 2 part mold. The problem is with the undercut. Just not sure how to do that.

Well I figured out how to cast it up. I figured out how to cast it so that the fill spot is on the bottom. What do you think?

I have started to get it ready for the LED's. I knew going into making this I would need to do some cutting on the clear part. I am going to use some velcro to help hold it together. That way I can change the batteries. The fun part is bolting the RF to the metal stalk. I had to get a very small wrench to get the bolts to connect.

VERY nice! OK, and these will be available.......

Thanks! I hope to be making them available soon as I get some nice days to cast. Resin does not like it when it under about 60.

Would you guys like the SX-70 lens to be clear or black?

oh sweet, you are making copies... that saves me a PM!

i'd like 3 of them. 2 clear lenses, and one skip the lens entirely. :)

That looks great. What kind of resin are you using for the clear? I plan on doing some clear castings in the future and looking for a good material.

WOW! Guess once it gets warm, I better get casting. :D

I use SmoothCast 325. It is clear from the start and takes tint very well. I have looked at some other stuff and it sounds like it is almost toxic.

I tried to base it on the ESB. I think for ROTJ I would just need to not add the lens and make the clear base a little shorter.

Also, I do not have the lines in the bottom of the large clear part. I was not sure how to put that into the mold and I know that I would need to cut it up to put in the LED's. So, I figured why bother. Trying to balance function and form.

i didn't realize the 325 was clear.

i used the casting resin sold at michaels for the the rotj style replacement battery cover on my MR RF topper. the stuff did in fact stink terribly.

i'd much rather use the 325... this stuff takes forever to cure, stays sort of tacky for about a week. it's terrible.

I am going to ask $40 for them mail in the US. I spent a lot of work to get this done.

Here are some pics of how I am going to attach it to my BKBT's RF stalk. This is not the only way to do this. Just the way that I am going to attach it. It is a pain in the rear to bolt the thing together. So, if you have a better idea, please post it.

Great job... are you actually taking orders for them yet or is this just an interest thread cause i would definitely be for getting one!!

Not taking orders right now. Just showing what you can make when you can't find a part. I have some other projects that I need to get done first. When I get some made, I will start PM'ing people.

Currently the only problem I am having is casting the lens. The back shape of the lens is a dome shape and it makes it hard to cast. But, when you put your photo of Solo in it, you will never see it. Or find a real lens from a sx-70 which is what I am going to do.

Please note, the parts in the photos have not been trimmed.
