Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Hi all, this is my first post on these boards.
I need opinions about what will be allowed by the 501st. I want to join my local garrison and I am anxious to go trooping with them. This being said I don't want to waste a lot of time with products that will not be good enough.
I have already been duped into buying a Rubies bucket from ebay. Not only is it terrible in every way but it is way too small for me. I am 6' tall and 200 lbs and I am thinking about getting a 95 Don Post and doing the repaint. I'm not sure if this one will still be too small for me and will I need to go with a BobaMaker bucket anyway.
Does anyone know if the 95 DP will look good enough for 501st standards? I figure that if it will, I will go with that one so that I can stay within a budget and to be sure that I have the paint scheme down before I some day upgrade to a BM bucket.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
well first off you are 6'...I don't think Boba was that tall, so you are going to have to do some slouching :)
jk
:)
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
You are definately too big for a 95 DP. The 95 just looks better than the rubies, it isn't any bigger. It's been said a hundred times before, your bucket is the most important part of the suit...do not skimp on it. I would definately invest in a larger helmet. Search the board, there are options here for reputable bucket providers.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
I was told that Jeremy was 6'1" in costume. I can't verify that but I was told that because I am the same height.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
It all depends on your GML. I am the GML for the Southern Outpost and I try my best to only allow the best possible costumes, In a perfect world I would only allow the most screen accurate costumes. Some GMLs seem to accept anything or make you a member with out even seeing pictures and others like myself will only allow you to join if you send pictures and meet a certain standard. Membership standards will vary from each GML. For example a Don Post helmet is exceptable to me only if it has a full visor and a better paint job.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Good info. I have heard a lot of talk about the 95 DP and I was under the impression that it was larger and of better quality that the Rubies. Looks like I'll have to go with something larger.
According to the Star Wars Galaxies Database for Boba Fett, He is 1.83 meters tall, which converts to 72.04 inches which is equal to 6 feet. Unless my math is bad.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
I stand corrected! Maybe I meant the Boba from Ep2 ;) ;)
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
I'm the GML for the New England Garrison and was once the webmaster for the Legion. Personally I wouldn't allow a 95 Don Post into the NEG without some SERIOUS modifications first.
You might want to do what others here have already said... skip the Don Post and go right for a better version. Look around here... you'll find some soon enough or someone will PM you with one.
As for what's acceptable, technically the Don Post isn't accurate enough unless you do some serious modifications and even then its usually too small. If you're 6 feet I'm sure that would be the case for you. I started out with a 96 Don Post... removed the cheesy visor, repainted the whole thing, replaced the rangefinder, etc... and I still looked wrong. They'd most likely let you in but it just wouldn't look quite right... Besides, if you're anything like most of us here you'll never be happy with your suit no matter how much you do to it. :lol You'll be stuck in the same upgrading rut with the rest of us. :lol :lol 4 years for me and still going.
Psst... Jeremy IS 6 feet without the costume so anything around there is a good height for accuracy. Not that it matters anyway because we aren't THAT picky on accuracy.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
I agree with Webchief, but I've seen some really amazing DP helmets that have come from people on this board...and I've seen some really bad ones as well (mostly from non TDH). Cost is always the number one issue for most folks, If you can't afford a Nice fiberglass helmet do like a friend of mine did, Mod a DP and make it look great and sell it for enough money to buy a really good fiberglass one.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Christo... I just realized you're from New England too... PM me with more info if you want to chat about the New England Garrison and how to join. I obviously can be of some help there. ;)
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Thanks webcheif. I am actually looking to join the NEG and I had spoken with you a little through email a few weeks ago when I joined the NEG forum. You had suggested that I begin here at TDH. Obviously the fact that you are the GML for the NEG as well as a Fett, makes your opinion the most important to me, no offense everyone else.
The biggest problem that I have found here is the varrying opinions. As you see above some people say that almost anything goes and will be allowed into the 501st. I have high standards myself and I truly want my costume to be movie accurate. Problem is, finding out what is "accurate".
Can someone please tell me how to find some reputable helmet providers here? I have tried the serach function and I just end up finding posts like this of people looking for a helmet or advice on one.
Is it possible to get a great movie sized fiberglass bucket without spending $300?
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
DP 95's are awesome there is absolutly nothing wrong with them other than you have to take great care not to let them sit anywhere where there is heat like a car on a hot day, or it will warp, unlike fiberglass.
Jeremy Bullock is about 5'11" now I think, but at the time He was 6 foot I believe, He has shrunk :lol Not only that on the back of every Boba Fett figure He is confirmed to be 1.8 meters which is right over 6 foot.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
:lol :lol Well that makes sense then doesn't it? :lol :lol Sorry, so many board names. :lol

I agree they have a pretty nice shape but I disagree with the warping being the only thing wrong with them. For someone who's 6 feet tall, 200 pounds it'll look too small. Trust me, I'm 6'2", 220 and I had a Don Post 96 (which was almost as good as a 95)... it was tiny compared to my MSH2. You could almost fit the 95 into the MSH2.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
My problem is this: I don't even know what a MSH2 is or where to get one. I am aware of the "Mystery Helmet" that I've seen on ebay and the helmet that is available from BobaMaker's web site, but that is the extent of my knowledge base of larger helmets.
It would be great if this site had some kind of a directory of the helmets that are available, where to get them, what the cost is and reviews from people who have experiance with them. Not such a crazy idea since "your bucket is the most important part of the outfit".
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
It looks like the cheapest that I could get a "Mystery" would be about $175 from ebay if I'm not outbid. Is this the price range that I have to be looking?

There is in this website that very thing, you have to look for it though in the search function.

Mystery Helmet found and purchased. ;) We got another one boys!!! :lol ;)

OK, I bought the Mystery from ebay. I hope i didn't snipe any of you for it. Sorry if I did but I'm too hyper to wait for another one.

OH ya that guy, I will warn you do not sign for it untill you open the box, I have heard horror stories from him, not saying its not a good helmet but I have heard of people getting a shattered helmet because the glass is so thin.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Uh oh.
His feedback is almost flawless so I thought it was safe. I can always reinforce the helmet I guess.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Ya if you get it in good shape its no problem.

Here is an old thread regarding the matter.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Hrrmmm... I feel bad now... I suggested that auction. I just pointed it out because it was a good price, good photos and the guy had good feedback. If there's any issue with its "thickness" I'll definitely help you out anyway I can.
Just email him and stress that you want it packed VERY WELL because you were told that others got there's broken in the mail. Ask if you can get insurance on it as well.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Yes good idea, and maybe he molds differenly now.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Actually, I worked for UPS for 3 years and I can totally see how something could get destroyed during shipping. Hopefully the bucket is nice enough though. Fingers crossed now.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
B..b...but it's a little bit grey! :lol (jk)
Looks like you've got yourself a good bucket, that should fullfill your needs buetifully(sp?). You'll have to post progress pics so we can see it "come to life!". Good luck with the 501st.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Well... these things ship all the time... that's how I got mine.... shipped in the mail. As long as its packed really well there shouldn't be an issue.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Looks like you bought a piece of **** recast to me, but that's just my opinion. Funny that the maker never speaks up for his work here on the TDH?! I wonder why that is?
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Maybe its just me, but each picture of that so called mystery helmet looks like a different helmet. It seems like nowadays everyone calls thier helmet a Mystery one.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
How can you tell that it is "a piece of **** recast" by looking at pictures?

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Wow... does everything break down into an argument lately? The new guy comes here looking for help to find a helmet... all he gets is a "use the search tool" message... I TRY to help him find a better solution to the Don Post and then another lecture on recasting breaks out...
Way to roll out the welcome wagon guys! Way to go!
No offense but if someone actually sent him good info on where to buy a helmet he wouldn't have to go to Ebay and buy one. Sorry guys but looking at a helmet on Ebay doesn't tell me its a recast... I look at it and think, "gee... maybe this dude bought a helmet and didn't want to make it... wants to sell it instead."
Sorry Christo Fett... welcome anyway!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
You have a point Webchief unfortunatly noone wants to sit there and post every link to every question that everyone that comes in has, I know its not but sometimes I find its my resposiblity to give as much info as possible so people wont do the same thinks and mistakes I made.
There is so much info though, you cannot post it all or sum it up in one post when a question as broad as "where do I get a helmet' come along.
Even Got Maul has confessed to buying a pos helmet from Ebay and His looks great so I wouldnt worry about steering him to eBay. Your only trying to help.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Unfortunately I think we all learn a hard lesson in this hobby at one point or another. You certainly can't be faulted for trying to help someone out, webchief. Members of this forum come to expect a better quality than most collectors when it comes to Fett. I think this leads to frustration when we see a seller whose items don't measure up. The link that cal196 posted showing the shattered helmet is a good example. Everyone is so concerned with LFL going after our best prop makers, that the only advise that is usually offered to new costumers is 'go to ebay.' I'm not saying that this is wrong, but the result can often be that a new costumer gives up after getting a vinyl helmet that looks like Jabba sat on it. Perhaps the best advice that could be given to our newer members is look around, post questions, and let the group get to know you. This way, we won't be as hesitant to provide the information about where to get the items that you are looking for.
On a separate note, welcome aboard, Christo. When you receive your bucket, you may want to reinforce it before you undergo the process of finishing it. Good luck!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Sorry Guys didn't mean to sideswipe the topic at hand, I get frustrated seeing guys buying there recasted mystery helmets....THEN joining up with the TDH showing off what they've won. The fact is they are buying into lies and purchasing products from guys that have no experience casting or fabricating and it shows when compared.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
His helmets aren't that great, they're pretty fragile. I cracked mine when I was trimming it! I couldn't believe it! It could work but I highly ecommend reinforcing it so you don't break it!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
What did you drop it? Sheesh :cheers
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Nope didn't drop it. I was just holding it trimming and sanding it. I heard a crack, looked down and saw the crack right on the brow. I couldn't believe it I wasn't even sanding hard I was just finishing it up. And the dang thing cracked about a half-inch.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Here is my photo of jeremy and I at CIII. I am 6'2" so you can see he might have been close to 6'1" in the costume.

-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
You outbid me for that one! It's ok because I have decided to keep my MS2. I have started sanding it to get the shape a little closer to the actual helmet. Mine was a little "tall" Marrow Sun definately has a great cast. Top notch and packed very well for shipping. Mine did have a crack in it but since it was in the visor area that has to be cut out anyway it was not an issue.
Webchief is definately a guy to help you out. Saw his fett in person at CIII and it is very good.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
My problem with the mentality of "use the search function" is that you can find 5 different threads with 5 different answers and some of the threads are older. I'd like to know what members opinions are today. People have new experiences everyday that can be learned from and if we just relied on past threads there would be no reason to ever start a new one, "just search the old ones for answers". I did conclude though, that I needed a larger helmet than a DP and then concluded (although too late) that I should have done more research on who was the best to buy my helmet from.
My only crime is that I am very anxious to get my costume started. If I am "buying into lies" it is only due to ignorance and that is why I came here, to get educated by people who know. Unfortunately, in this case, the education came a bit too late. Hopefully I won't make that mistake again.

yikes, that sounds like a fault on the maker and not packing. what ended up happening to your helmet?

Sorry to hijack the thread!
My bucket is currently just sitting there waiting for me to paint it and reinforce it.

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Has anyone actually answered the original question yet??
I'm sure a simple yes or know with a reason would have sufficed, unfortunately Christo,I'm not sure myself but the general consensus seems to be if you want a good helmet you gotta pay for it,Bobamaker does a good kit,not sure if I'm allowed to link to his site though, best not just in case....
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Christo, you shouldn't have to apologize or feel guilty for ANYTHING. You asked questions... I gave you an answer I thought was acceptable and you valued my opinion as someone who's been here a while. Not your fault at all. I apologize for the public reaction to your purchase. I'm sure that if you were comfortable using a Don Post helmet that you'll be VERY happy with your purchase of this "mystery" helmet. In comparison to a Don Post I'm sure your new bucket will look to you as though it was made of gold! I wouldn't worry about it.
I apologize that I sent you to Ebay instead of to the "maker" of the bucket. Its been said a million times on this board alone... when a newbie asks where the best place to get parts is the standard answer is "check Ebay". Hell, there used to be a thread on this board that was a FAQ type thread that instructed people directly... "Go to Ebay!"
If that was the original direction then why should anyone think otherwise? Especially when all they get for an answer is "use the search" or an argument over the height of Jeremy Bulloch.
Personally I can't wait for your helmet to arrive and I'll do my best in person to help you to make it look the best you can. I'll see you at the prop party on the 12th! Hopefully you have it by then! If you need any of the "real" paint colors I'll bring them with me to the party as I have a few extra bottles. See you soon!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Well said and thank you for the POSITIVE comments!
I don't mind negative coments when asking for an honest opinion but pissy comments because someone didn't buy a product from you, should never be welcome.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Oh yeah, and 1138, if you want to know the answer - use the search function ;)
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Hah,yeah,I'll try and remember that...In fact I'll use the search function to see if there any threads about using the search function, just incase i forget...or something :b
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
:lol :lol :lol I'm sorry but it occured to me that once a topic goes off topic or asks a question that members are pationate about, we all start arguing like little old women!
I am a relative noob compaired to some here but as far as I can see it's a good helmet. Assuming it arrives safely (fingers crossed) and needs strengthening then that can be done with ease, IF it doesn't need strengthening... all the better. Myster, MS2, Bobamaker or recast matters not! Whilst I agree that it is better to get a bucket from the maker then a recast from someone else, if you like it, and it fulfills your requirements (ie; once painted is suitable for the 501st) then that's all that matters. And I see no reason why it shouldn't be acceptable for the 501st, especially with Webchiefs help!
As to the standard advice of "check eBay" perhaps it's time to rethink that advice. It might prove better to send the interested party information on how to get a deceant helmet via pm or email, telling him/her how to contact the maker/s instead of running the gauntlet of scammers on eBay. Additionally, it might not be a bad idea to list helmets with details so that people can see what is considered a good buy and what isn't.
Good luck with the helmet Christo Fett, and I for one want to see progress pics.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Yeah man, this is your first helmet! I was actually going to bid on it myself but then opted not to -- for other reasons :); but yeah, you can fix it up I am sure and have a great looking Fett, then after a while you will grow to decide what you like best on your personal outfit!
;)
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Yes, I am quite psyched to get it. And I'll have help from webchief, who happens to be the GML of my local 501st garrison, as well as a great guy. Considering the purpose of my initial posting was to make sure that what I chose for a helmet will be good enough for my local garrison, I'd say that I got more than the help I was looking for.
I do support the idea of getting your bucket from it's original maker, I just didn't know that I wasn't. And I will definitely post some pics of my progress with this helmet.
Thanks to everyone who had something constructive to say and most of all, thanks webchief!

Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Hey, does anyone know where I can buy a helmet?
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
check ebay!
but seriously, bobamaker, marrow sun, ebay to name a few off the top of my head.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Thanks! I was just attempting to try to be funny. But to get back to the subject at hand. That helmet will be fine, I mean what helmet does'ent get modified when building it from scratch! And if it needs to be reinforced with some more fiberglass so be it! It's not that hard. I personally have a modified Don Post and would be stoked to get to build that helmet from scratch recast or not!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
The think the thing that Marrow Sun is trying to convey is if people keep buying cheap casted helmets when they do not have to, they will keep making them to sell and people will keep buying them. Why get a helmet where you have to basically redo the ear caps for it to fit, and reinforce the inside when you dont have to. And for the same price.
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
This is true, I'm just saying he should'ent feel too bad. It's not like he bought a Rubies for $150.00
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
I had the pleasure of meeting Christo Fett today at a prop party in our area. He brought the helmet with him and it will be quite workable. We'll get him up and Fett-i-sized.
Great meeting you Chris!
-
Re: Will I measure up to the 501st standards?
Great to meet you too Bob!
Thanks for bringing all of your gear to the party. It was very helpful to see everything up close. I will be busting my a$$ to get my stuff done. I was up at 7:30 this morning triming the bottom edge of the helmet.
My helmet will definitely work out well but I do see the benefit of getting one from someone reputable from these boards, if it means less work at the same price. People on these boards all rave about the Marrow Sun helmet and if you can get one, I probably would go that route if I had the chance to do it all again.
I like the size and shape of my "Mystery" helmet that I got from ebay and the seller was great. Shipping was ultra-fast and the packing was the best I've ever seen. However, I was a little disapointed with the thickness and quality around the bottom edge and the inside is rough fiberglass and not gelcoat. My complaints are based on seeing the awesome bucket that webchief has. I cannot speak to how the helmets are made by the guys on this site as I have not personnaly seen one.

Hello,
I am new to TDH (joined today) and after reading about Cristo's concerns i find myself in a similar position. I have recently started collecting helmets and have been using Jez's "Star Wars Helmet Archive" website as a point of reference in terms of what type of quality helmets there are out there.
I have so far been lucky enough to pick up a GH ANH Vader and the 3 available Ainsworth SDS helmets, all of which are trully excellent, and as my NEED picks up pace i find myself looking for a ESB Fett helmet.
I was hoping for a few opinions on which is universally thought of as the best movie accurate ESB helmet available, and how to get hold of the maker (not the most original question i know, sorry).
Many thanks and best wishes,
Johnny
