    Where to start ?

    Hi!
I been fiddling with the Rafal Works templates but it did not turn out the way i wanted.
i been a lurker for some time and been thinking of buying a helmet from one of casters on the site.
So heres is my questions :

What helmet would be the best choice for a first project ?

Why don't you show us the result of the scratch build helmet? Maybe we can help you or even guide you in your build. Did you used my step-by-step instructions or you did the helmet before I posted that in the RWH v2 thread?

I started before the v2 thread.
To be completely honest i think that a casted helmet could turn out better than anything that i could put together, but if you want to have a peek i can post some pictures later on.

    Re: Where to start ?

also... been looking on ebay but since there is a chance of shoddy recasts i would rather do a deal with someone here if it was possible.

Anyway here is how far i got with my scratch build before i canned it.

i used a misting bottle during the assembly and the cardboard started to warp when it dried up.

    quite frankly it looks horrid

    Re: Where to start ?

It doesn't look as bad as you described in your first post. The major problem in your build is that you applied too much pressure on the cardboard and crackled a bit in some places. Take your time and follow the step-by-step instructions on my or others threads, but if your desire is to have an already made helmet, then I suggest to look in the Cargo Hold. Except of Man of War Studios (and sometimes members that sells there), stay away from eBay!

    Re: Where to start ?

I could attempt to salvage what i got so far, but i am not really that confident in my craftsmanship
To clarify "my desire" was to try to find a kit that i could prep and paint myself.

    Re: Where to start ?

there are a few members that sell kits like you want; they need trimmed, sanded, and painted. Watch the cargo hold, and like Raf and F4R said, stay away from ebay (other than man of war studios). 99%of the stuff there is just recasts of the items that members here make and sell, so just keep a sharp eye on the CH, and you will be fine.

    Re: Where to start ?

Hi mate. I'd say start afresh with your scratch build before you go ahead and buy a cast.

If you're into a self made bucket then it is very rewarding when it pulls off. As Raf said, your first attempt doesn't look that bad at all! I've found that you just have to be really patient and take care in everything you do. If you feel yourself starting to rush or stress just take a few minutes and remind yourself that it will work you just need to focus. It takes me a little longer than most people to build, create, and modify anything because I work slowly in general so this helps a bit.

At the end of the day though you've gotta do what you feel is best and you know how you should proceed better than anyone of us. I'd really like one of the cast helmets myself but I'm gonna hold off on one of those until I've got some experience from my scratch build Mainly for the paint job....which I'm dreading haha.

Anyway, hope that helps in some way.

    Re: Where to start ?

Just realized that i probably used the wrong thickness cardboard from the start.
The type i have bought is 3mm and as far as i can see the templates are made for 2mm.

3mm also makes cutting the stuff a real pain in the end!

Yes, the templates are made for 2mm thick cardboard, but there are parts that will require 1mm thick cardboard too; just follow the instructions.

Not only the cutting is hard with a 3mm cardboard, but also the bending is more difficult. Patience is the key! As Redeyepunk said, when you feel that you are rushing the process, take a short break by doing anything else (to disconnect your mind from the build) and when you'll come back to the helmet, you will have more energy and desire to continue the work.
