Where do I start ?

hey guys, I've been an avid watcher of these forums for the longest time and felt its time to begin my own fett path, but I guess my main question is ... where do i actually start ??

my knowledge set is in electronics so hopefully i can offer the community a small amount of what I'm sure il be asking haha !

what do i need to get started as I've only ever painted small models before and don't know a great deal about it or the assembly process

i just need a mild prod in the right direction as there seems so much to consider right now its overwhelming

thanks in advanced !

Jendor

Well, it depends. Do you plan on making a lot of stuff on your own or are you more likely to piece together already fabricated parts? Check out WizardOfFlight's stickied threads. He's drawn up blueprints for just about every component of the costume and then some. You'll also find examples in said threads of what people have made. I've decided to make my own suit. WoF's blueprints have been invaluable in creating my Fett. The first pieces that I finished were the gauntlets. I figured that they were a good primer for the jet pack and helmet. If you plan on trying to assemble premade parts, just do lots of reading around here to get a feel for who makes the quality of pieces that you seek.

As for it being overwhelming, just take it a step at a time. If you keep a steady pace, you'll have a suit before you know it. What I'm trying to do is get my Fett "wearable" by Halloween. After that, I can upgrade pieces if I so choose. It seems that so some dudes spend 3, 4, 5+ years upgrading individual parts before they get a wearable Fett while I've seen other guys put something together in a matter of weeks. It all depends on the money and the time that you're willing to spend on this.

I hope what I've said is useful/ makes sense. Good luck on your project!

Matt

Granted, I am not doing the traditional movie version but with working a full time job, I managed to pretty much complete my whole suit from scratch in less than a year.

Had I been home while ordering everything waiting for things to come in it would have been 6 months or so or waiting for pieces and such...still waiting for the last piece the girth belt which should be done and to me next week finally so 11 months it took me to get EVERY piece about to goto home depot for some hoses today

i think i'd like to attempt making, but more the little after mods and little bits ranter than the helm/armour itself looking forward to prototyping some electronics for it all also i dont know if this is a taboo question but financially where would i stand for a full suit .. ballpark with/without painting

I know that's a hard call as its all down to how much detail i want to go into but il be building up good quality stuff hopfully haha !

i think im going to go for a helmet first, i guess it seems the most logical to me, how realistic is it for me to paint a good helm or am i crazy ? haha as i have no idea how much the community is price wise for paint jobs

loved the look of BM's stuff so i think i may be using his helm as a starting point !

The only thing is that a helmet can be somewhat difficult with all the contours and if you have limited prop building experience, it can get frustrating.
If it were me, I'd do the simpler armor first that way if and WHEN it comes out to your liking there's the sense of accomplishment to keep you going forward.

If you parse the project into individual sections you will find it less daunting on the whole, its pretty easy to separate the items from head to toe.

For instance:
Helmet
Body Armor
Jetpack
Jumpsuit
Boots
Cape
Weapon.
Etc...

thanks guys you're given me alot of food for thought, i think i may be going to purchase the helm and make the rest in parts etc

im really looking forward to making up some electronics for the suit, i did a search but has anyone got a list of bobas gadgets/electronics something to get my teeth into forr the comunity perhaps haha

Most of this stuff was purchased I assume, and may not be reflective of your build but this full Fett is going in the cargo hold. http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/show....-my-ESB-Fett-for-sale-to-fund-other-projects My Fett is about up to $400 and that's mostly in materials. If you scratchbuild good quality stuff your biggest investment (truely) is time.

Hi, I just came back from C5 and attended a Fett costuming presentation there. Someone asked a similar question and the panel suggested starting with the helmet. Some folks start with unpainted/unfinished lids and some purchase fully finished ones. (of course there are those talented enough to make their own from scratch...me not included) By doing so you'll be able to build around it from top down. Apparently, it'll set the tone for the whole process. I'm beginning myself and after having the opportunity to speak with some of the advanced builders it made a lot of sense. Just be prepared for it to be a constant reminder to you and your wallet :) Good luck!

Yeh the helmets where I started...but sometimes in the cargohold something will popup like armor u dont have to start anywhere but get a list and a budget and try and figure what u want and how much ur willing to spend...Ive really spared no expense and have two helmets an expensive one and a not so expensive fett pride budget which is still not cheap but affordable

I'm in the same boat as you are Jendor. At the moment I am getting ready to start ordering the pieces that I can't make but I am torn between which Boba to build...ESB or ROTJ....
