I had a thought about that, I don't remember where I posted it though.

The idea was this; If someone were to screen print an image of the calc. piece on a bit of material similar to speaker cloth, ( for breathability ) you could have ventilation and some accuracy. As for fans, when I install mine, there will be at least one drawing air in, and one blowing it out, preferably, the blower type of fan. The CPU type mounted inside may be ok, but my opinion is that they are just recirculating the stale air.

Maybe when I finally get my helmet delivered I can use the method with the Chicago Screws. Thanks, especially since I live where they're named after!

    Re: Visor installation?

This isn't a Mando bucket, but I found this thread while I was looking for a way to install the visor in my Phase II Episode III bucket and thought I would adapt it a little for that.

Dark green visor with some visor templates taped on. My wife made these by eye and did a pretty good job keeping the template symmetrical.

Then Thorn puts his beer goggles (visor) on ... I made a cardboard visor template to help with the placement of the chicago screws on the inside of the helmet.

I put the screws in the cardboard template and dabbed a little paint on the backside of the screws to mark the inside of the helmet. Then I used my dremel to scuff up the inside of the helmet in preparation for epoxy putty.

After this, I applied the 5 minute epoxy putty directly to the chicago screws and pressed them and the cardboard template onto the inner surface of the helmet.

Boom, baby! Visor installed. I left the protective film on the plastic for now because I plan to have it in and out a few more times while I do some more painting.

How exactly do you make the visor. Is there a thread on that? And if ther is can you post the link to it?

You can either go to t-visor.com or you can pickup a welders shield at a hardware store and custom cut one for yourself.

Is the glue method (ex. hot glue, super glue...) really a decent method to use for visor installation? How well does it actually hold?

    Re: Visor installation?

Well, I'm still a long ways from installing my visor in my Boba Bucket. I still haven't even got my range finder on nor my helmet painted. I have been looking at this thread and there are some really great ways to attach the visor. I like the Chicago screw idea best so far with the removability factor. I also noticed that some of you have used hot glue and say that it works great. I was wondering if anyone has used any of that epoxy glue that is used for attaching the rear view mirror to glass in a vehicle. I was thinking of doing that for my visor in my helmet. I have had good experience with this stuff in my truck. I used the epoxy glue before on a rear view mirror and I can say that that glue is very strong. My mirror has been stuck on my windshield for 5 years in the baking hot southern sun and it still holding strong. Any thoughts on something like this to glue the visor in with. Has anyone used this stuff for their visors? My only concern would be would it melt the plastic of the visor since it is designed to attach metal to glass? Any thoughts?

    Re: Visor installation?

If your not concerned with accuracy, and just want to mount it Hot glue would be my reccomendation if you dont care, the chicgo screw is alright but not the endall, its a bit different with a boba helmet as theres the issue of spacing of the visor, to wide and it looks dumb and to narrow and it looks dumb so be mindful

And Halo_1, I must say that I love your mounting system.
i have a 95' don post helmet coming in the mail...from the helmet history on the sticky, am i correct to assume that this helmet will fit the large sized visor? i mean since the mystery helmet and the don post helmet were casted from the same lava helmet right? also, from the pics i saw of my helmet (i didnt get it yet) i see that the lower part of the visor is part of the mold and not a whole "T" shaped eye piece...do i use a dremel to cut away at that part to modify it to have a correct "T" shaped visor?

If 1/4" is the shortest length chicago screw you can find, then yes. You'll have extra length, in relation to the thickness of the visor... which is why I used the plastic kitchen faucet washers.

You'll actually find that the Don Post '95 helmet is on the small side, definitely smaller than the Mystery helmet. You are correct about the T-visor section, the lower section of the t-visor area is indeed attached and will need to be removed.

Word of caution... if the helmet that you're getting is a real Don Post '95, and not a cast of one, then you'll want to cut out and fit the visor ( but not install just yet ) before cutting away the bottom connecting section of the t-visor. The Don Post is a soft vinyl material, unlike the more commonly used resin of other slush-cast helmets. Removing that bridge piece before you are ready to install the visor may cause the Don Post to deform/warp. You would be wise to search for tutorials on how to install a "craft ring" to help the Don Post maintain it's shape.

I just use a tiny bit of hot glue at 4 points..seals very nicely..and very easy to remove w/ a little bit of heat.

depending on the hot glue it can work that way..but a lot of hot glue will stick to the visor and latter just pop off from the helmet side.

So, using the Chicago screw method, it I want to bond the screws to the helmet what adhesive works best? I was thinking of counter sinking them ever so slightly and using bondo to adhere them in. Will that work?

It could work. I used a two-part epoxy, and it's held up going on 5 years now.

I will be using your chicago screw / washer method (or the t-bolt method first mentioned, if I can find them locally).

IMO, I think the visor should be replaceable like this, in case you want to troop at night, or in case you want to tint your visor... and most importantly: in case you scratch or crack your old one too badly.

    Re: Visor installation?

Has anyone tried the chicago screw method but instead of making a hole in the visor let the washer make pressure on one side, I don't know if I explained myself clearly, I think I saw a picture of somebody with that type of installation but can't find that post anymore... I have my visor to install in my 97 don Post but theres not much space in the bottom part of the mandibules to install a screw like the ones I see here, may need to go with a hybrid of screws and hot glue gun in the bottom.....

    Re: Visor installation?

Ok, so I was thinking abut a method to install the visor that could be easy to install and remove without the use of tools or drilling into my visor, some kind of clip on/clip off method, so I was looking for some kind of flat clip that will accommodate the 3mm acrylic of the visor I bought from T-Visor.com but wasn't able to find them, so I had to build my own. So I started with a standard small paper clip 3/4" (19mm) I got at Office Depot, this are really cheap, I don't know in the US, but here are less than a dollar for 12 pieces.

    img_2414.jpg

then remove one of the "legs" and flat out one side using some pliers...

    img_2417.jpg

I did cut the flat side using a dremmel tool cutting discs to remove the round part that used to hold the "leg" to make it as flat as possible to glue it flush to the edge of the helmet, I used plastic welder 2 part glue and it works like a charm gluing metal to plastic, remember to sand a little bit the plastic part in the helmet to give it a better grip...I installed 3 on top and 4 on the vertical part of the T, I have no problem on the sides of the horizontal part.

    img_2422.jpg

I left the remaining leg on the 3 top clips, it makes it a lot easier to slide the visor in and on the vertical part the visor just slides in with no effort at all...

    img_2421.jpg

Hope this helps, I'm happy with the result...

    Re: Visor installation?

I'm using the chicago screw & kitchen faucet washer method for my Assassin helmet visor. Pick up the "Size 0" kitchen faucet washers.. they fit the chicago screws well and measure 1/8" thick. Try to get the 3/16" long chicago screws or smaller if you have a standard 1/16" thick visor. I had the 1/4" screws, but they were too long & I did not want to countersink them too deep into the helmet.

I sanded a slight recess (about 1/16" deep) in the helmet and dabbed plastic bonder epoxy on the bottom of the bolts. I taped them down to the helmet till the glue dried. Since this wasn't a real strong bond, I went in with JB Weld filler around the bolt & to fill in the recess more.

Now I have bolts attached firmly to the helmet. The only question now is, "How do I mark the visor for holes?" The bolts are not lined up exactly with the template, so I have to remark the holes on the visor/template. Thinking I'll put some masking tape on the template (which is taped to my visor cut-out) and some paint or nailpolish on the bolts. Then TRY to press it down to line it up.

    Hello,

Iīve tried to use the chicago screw method. I get the visor on the helmet. But there is still a little bit space between the helmet ant the visor. When i look in front of it. At the side and at the bottom where is no place for the screws. now i donīt know if itīs ok or if the visor must sit without any space. How is it with your helmet is there still some space? Iīm afraid to go on an try it with epoxy or hot glue. i donīt want to ruin my helmet.

The template will indeed be your best method. Just make sure that you've got your visors front surface completely covered in masking tape to protect it. Do not remove the masking tape from your visor until after you've got the alignment holes drilled, and the visor is ready to be installed... I'd even go further and recommend that you dry-fit the visor as well before removing the protective masking tape.

Jackfrost, a small space between the visor and helmet is fine. You can reduce the gap by counter-sinking the chicago screws a bit prior to gluing them in place. I actually find the gap to be ideal, as it's hardly noticable when you're wearing the helmet, and allows for some air-flow over the visor which helps to reduce the fogging effects... I find that my visor only fogs on the lower portion, below my nose, so has no effect on my vision.

    Re: Visor installation?

Thank you Jango72. I butchered the mounting holes a little bit (not all of them fit), and I did not think to use making tape.. Wish I did, as I scratched the visor with scissors (note - do not cut TOWARDS the visor with scissors. Use the exacto knife when cutting towards the visor). Fortunately, I can't see the scratch when it's installed, and I can't see it from the inside. If I could, I'd just make it into weathering.

Here is a pic of the Assassin helmet with the visor installed via chicago screws. I used more than necessary. I suggest removing the two in the middle of the "mouth" section. I'd also consider removing the one in the top middle area.
