Hey superstars! A teensy-tiny lil' update here, jut a little more detail work on weathering phase 3.. not a whole lot to add on the how-to front, more just a case of showing some pics of how these next little sections worked out. pic (1) shows the small bright red sections addded in weathering phase 2, as well as the new addittion of the 3 little drip stains. Pic (2) simply shows the weathered borden - some brass poking out of the nickel plate, and some white dust stain around the area. Pic (3) shows the 2 newly added white paint splotches, and you may also note some fine detail work within the silver on the trim.

Pic (4) is a little close up comparison to see the bright red areas and 3 drip stains next to the real lid. One thing I particularly like about this pic, is it highlights just how close the Humbrol wine 73 (the main red colour of my mandibles) looks in comparison to the real wine colour mandibles. I really am glad I chose to go with it - just didn't like caboose at all - as much as many reccomended it and swore by it, my bottle was waaay too brown, and when I tested it over the purple, it looked even worse. I was just never confident with it. I do know though, that sometimes the mixes of certain colours in the floquil range can differ by the batch, so maybe I just got a colour mix that was slightly off the norm - but in this case, I was very happy to stick with the humbrol colour. In any case, decal fixing, minor silver highlights, rangefinder and interior to come. Thanks for looking gang! :)

Okay Fett-a-maniacs, weathering phase 3 is pretty well done, which pretty much concludes much of the base paint work. I'm sure I will always be going back to add a scratch or some weathering I may have missed, but for the most part it is about there. I have a good buddy of mine who is a wizard on the camera, and has a good set up, so on completion, I will add some of his high quality pics. As it stands tho, I’ve just got phone pics to add, and while the light was okay today, there was a bit of shade coming across, but it will do..

Pic (1) shows the added rub on letter decals in the 3 different areas. Pretty straightforward, but really like the look of them. Pic (2) has you see the light grey detail added in to the mandible silver - Raf and I discussed if this existed on the hero lid, and I felt his last addition sold me - it seems the damage is still the same with no extra bits flaked off as in other areas of the damage - meaning that it was probably there to begin with. I also look at many of the movie reference pics, and I swear I can see it there on super close inspection. Regardless, I like the look anyway, so it’s all good. Pic (3) shows some added weathering highlights among the olive green section on the left lower cheek. I actually think this is a little different from the grey tone used elsewhere on this cheek - I think it is more weathering on close inspection, so I used some of the grey; some light brown 93 and some steel wool to bring it back. In person, I think it looks spot on, but lighting often alters the look a little. The other minor thing that is shown in this pic, is some fine detail on the non rangefinder ear, in the tiny red areas I originally missed in the weathered 'cloud like bubble shape'. Thank-you kindly for that little addition Raf. Pic (4) is simply a frontal view to show it all starting to come together. Here, you may also sight some little added touches like silver skirting around the fringes of the mandibles. Pic (5) is along the same line, but shows the back coming together. Realised I didn't have too many shots of the back, so other than adding in a couple more scratches, here ya go :)

So, for my second boba lid paint up, I’m pretty happy at this stage. Rangefinder will be tackled next, along with my constant work on the interior. Will post pics of those sections as soon as they are done. Any feedback or questions, feel free peeps! Peace :)

Wow! It's hard to put words on how awesome this paint job is! :D

If you ever consider doing commissions, consider me a potential client. ;)

I am proud of your work and you should too. You are now in the top 10 of the best painters on TDH. Can't wait to see your next challange ==> ROTJ Hero(?) helmet paint job.

WOW, thankyou for the huge props raf. There are some gun painters on this board, and to even be mentioned in similar regard is a huge compliment, and many thanks. As for the next project, if i do another fett lid, I definately will tackle ROTJ.. Still a little more to go on this one, and actually just found a couple of nice little bits to add to the interior. Pics up over the next week. Also done all the prep work on my stalk and rangefinder.. I did finish a boushh helmet a while back, ill have to post some pics when I get a chance..

Locitus - thats a huge compliment to want to look at me considering commissions, and I really appreciate it. I just know that time is a huge factor for me at the moment, this helmet alone has taken long enough, and also being based in australia, with shipping costs, the price mite just work out unreasonable. But such a great comment really has me humbled, and I appreciate it hugely :)

Well, if you ever change your mind.... ;)

I would not mind shipping across the globe. It would be worth it!

Of course I don't blame you not ever actually want to do commissions either. It's a huge amount of work and many many hours that not everyone can afford to put down.

Morning Fetties! Update time, and a couple of new areas to share. First up, is my progress to this stage on the interior. The interior has been really fun to work on, and I’m happy with it so far – it’s a faithful rendition in my eyes of the real ESB lid, and while I still have a few little additions and changes to make, it’s about 95% done. The 6 point suspension system will be altered slightly, with some thinner strap to be added which is getting sewn up for me as we speak, and will look a lot more in line with the original. The thicker strap that appears in these photos was the test straps. Also, the visor will be inserted, and I have a couple of extra screws to add in for accuracy. Pic 2 simply shows the chin strap added in – it’s not the exact chin cup used, but when you find it on an old cricket helmet in cash converters for $4 all up, I think it works out fairly smartly. So all in all, pretty happy with the interior section.

The next 2 photos show what I now call weathering phase 4 – The very excellent Raf noticed some extra marks on the back panels which I added in, as well as adding the darker oliv-ey green sections on the back panels. That darn Raf finding new stuff for me to always add in (;)wink wink)- nah, its honestly great stuff by him, and the addittions are awesome for the accuracy stakes. I understand on the back panels, that I have added in a couple of extra scratches from AOSW that Raf didn’t include on his hero stencils – that was simply a case of me completing the back panels before rafs revised stencils were up. It’s only a couple odd scratches tho, and happy with my back panels, so not going to lose any sleep over it, and will likely only mess it up if I try to cover them up, so more than happy with them how they are...

The other small addition was doing the new light grey (147) areas that I discussed with raf. If you look at the first back picture, you can sight some of this light grey among the silver in the top right corner of the trim. There was also a few minor touch ups all round. RF stalk to be weathered next, as well as finalising the interior. In the process of ordering a hollow RF and working light set to add down the track, which should finish it all off nicely. Hope you enjoy peeps, keep any feedback coming, peace :)

WOW! This is the most accurate (fan made) ESB Hero helmet I saw in my short life (so far) on this forum! I'm glad that you included those light green scratches on the left back panel, but maybe you will hate me, because I found other additional details on the ESB Hero helmet!

These looks like some rust patches on the killstripe side of the dome, but my intuition says that these might be traces of the killstripe painting process:

There are some rust-like marks that I can't find on the ESB stills and captures, and I say these are post ESB marks, just like those white and black stains on the front, front-left side of the dome:

And here is an image I made with the ESB Hero helmet (compiled with movie/promo stills and movie captures):

Haha, i'd never hate you raf, its all in the name of accuracy, and I actually think its great. Im glad you bought up those yellow subtle rust stains - not only should they be a fairly simple addittion with the airbrush, I had sighted them myself, but wondered if it was my eyes playing tricks on me. Great call, ill add them in for the next update. I do agree tho on the othet major rust stains - I have always believed they were another aosw addition. As always, thanks for your keen eye and kind words bud :)

You convinced me with that red spot on the right mandible and after I looked at the AoSW/C-IV exibit images, I found several areas painted with that red color (the same color is on the left ear):

Red Spots.jpg

On the left side, next to the big crack repair (exibits images) is a bit tricky to see the difference, but is best viewed with indirect light on that area:

yea, really good call on that mate - I actually thought some of that red within the silver damage near the crack looked a bit lighter too, but wasn't sure if it just looked differrent against the silver. The other areas you point out I will add in too - fortunately the one I pointed out on the right Mandible I added in when I did the other red areas, but I didn't spot he other bits, so nice work, and should be fairly simple. the two bigger bright red splotches we added in first, are a little more defined, as they actually have a very fine light grey rim around them. some of the other bits are tougher to pick, as its two shades of red next to each other which arent as defined. So really good eyes bud.

If anyone were to do this and add these brighter red areas, use red 60 in the humbrol range - its the same colour as the red on the ear, and is spot on against the mandible main colour of wine 73. Other brands unfortunately, I cant speak for, but every bit helps. Peace :)

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad we are on the same (and good) track. Finally I can add the finishing touches to the stencils and I will repost soon all the files.
